Battle at the Barn V Attracts NASCAR and SPEED Television Personality

Battle at the Barn V Attracts NASCAR and SPEED Television Personality

Des Moines, Iowa (December 1, 2012) – Toby Kruse, Founder and Promoter of the Annual Battle at the Barn indoor races held each January at the Jacobson Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, announced that he received an entry from NASCAR Nation Wide competitor and SPEED television personality, Kenny Wallace.

Kruse commented that he was approached by Wallace at Volusia County Speedway, during speed weeks in Daytona earlier this year, asking about the indoor race that features go-karts, motorcycles, three wheelers, four wheelers, and lawnmowers.  Wallace commented that he had never raced a go-kart and that that just might be fun.

While staying in touch with each other over the summer, Kruse now reports that Wallace finally confirmed last week that he would be coming to Des Moines with the intent to compete in several of the classes for go-karts.  In a recent tweet Wallace stated, “Made my mind up!  NO Chili Bowl "wife thinks I will die"...BUT Jan 25, 26 "Battle at the Barn V" Go Kart Race indoor Des Moines Iowa :)”  Wallace will pilot the #36 kart provided by Kody King Motorsports Icon Chassis.

With the announcement of Wallace’s entry, Kruse announced that a special race will be held on Friday night, “We will have a $200 to win 390 clone race on Friday night.  The top 12, 390 clones from practice times will go head to head for 12 laps for $200.  Wallace will be granted a provisional if he is not in the top 12during practice.  This will be the final event of the night on Friday, right after the open practice for all competitors”.  Kruse added, “It will be fun to see how well Kenny does against the best kart racers from across the nation.  In the karting world, our event has become the Daytona for karts”.

The 5th Annual Battle at the Barn will take place on Friday and Saturday, January 25th & 26th, 2013.  Friday doors will open at 12:00 noon with practice starting at 6:00 pm followed by the $200 to win, 390 clone – Wallace Challenge.  Doors open Saturday at 9:00 am with practice at 11:00 am, heat races at 1:30 pm and feature races starting at 7:00 pm.  Two day pit passes are $35, one day pit pass $20.  Friday grandstand tickets for adults and children 11 & up will be $5.  Saturday grandstand only admission will be $13 with children 10 and under admitted for free.  A special two day grandstand ticket will be available for only $15.

A New Record at Thunder Dome Race #2

Another beautiful day greeted drivers, fans and officials on Saturday as the The Thunder Dome Indoor Dirt Racing Race #2 took place in the covered arena at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds in Marshalltown. A total of 95 entries checked in to do battle a new Thunder Dome record and the racing was very entertaining and wild day of racing.

First feature was the the JR 1 Medium and it would be Ashton Gein taking the early lead before a lead he would hold on to until a caution on lap 7 for Nick Rose and Gein getting together however Gein would get the lead back until he would lose it too Brody Willett on lap 9. Willett would go on to take the win with Brandon Maitland in 2nd, Logan Duffy in 3rd, Dayton Filloon in 4th and Gein in 5th.

The Kid Karts feature would Kinzer Jaennette jump out to the lead earlier and appeared to be cruising on to the easy win before a chain would break with 2 laps to go giving the lead over to Rolend Stewart. Stewart would finish 1st and with Jaennette, Ryder Langenfeld and Cason Fitch rounding out the top 5.

Rookie Beginner was next and it would be Ty Solverson from Fort Dodge leading all 10 laps to take the win. Jayson Alexander from Milo was 2nd and Drake Badker from Clear Lake was 3rd.

In the Rookie Advanced would see Kamden Criss lead from start to finish, Landon Duffy would finish 2nd and Brady Kohrs would end up 3rd after he had some lingering issues after making contact with the outside wall in round 2 of heat races.

Brandon Webster would get the Wholeshot victory in the Mad Dogg Bikes. Keeton Fleener would finish 2nd, Jayson Beal was 3rd, Dawson Kuhlman was 4th and Justin Lichty was 5th. Harlen Kent would finish 7th in the Mad Dogg Bikes but get credit with the win in the JR Bikes as he was the only JR Bike on the day.

JR Quads were again split up into classes based on quad size. The first feature was the 125cc and under big quads, it was Tristan Rethmeier getting the whole shot and crusing on the easy win. Brandon Sly was 2nd and Davonte Polson was 3rd. The second feature was the 50cc and under small quads feature, it was Jaxson Smith getting the whole shot but he would be passed coming off of turn 4 on lap 2 by Jackson Misel. Misel's lead would be short lived as he would make heavy contact with the turn 2 wall forcing the red flag. Misel would be okay but not able to continue this would give the lead back over to Jaxson Smith. Smith would lead the remaining laps to take the win over Cason Fitch and Jackson Brown.

Amateur Bikes would see Clayton Webster from Ottumwa get the Wholeshot victory. His younger brother Brandon Webster would try to chase him down but fall short and settle for 2nd. Brad Barickman would finish 3rd and Austin Davis was 4th.

In the Amateur Quads it would be David Petithory get the whole shot victory despite a yellow on lap 2 when Petithory and Donny Teninty got hooked together. Teninty would end up 2nd, Doug Slyvester was 3rd, Doug Reeves was 4th and Luke Smith was 5th.

Open 4 Cycles and Unlimited All-Stars (UAS) go-kart classes come out on the speedway. Turbo Timmy Bontrager would start on the outside front row and grab the lead and not look back as he would cruise on to his 2nd win of the Thunder Dome season in his car nicknamed "Beavis and Butthead". Scott Badker would finish 2nd and get credited with the win for the UAS. Erik Splund was 3rd and will get 2nd in the Open 4 Cycles. Taylor Luke was 4th and 3rd in the Open 4 Cycles. Jason Blok was 5th and 4th in the Open 4 Cycles.

Topless Box Stocks made their debut inside the Thunder Dome and i will admit was really cool to see them racing inside the Thunder Dome. Evan Winkler would grab the lead and not look back despite a caution  coming out for Colt Grief after making contact in turn 2. Finishing behind Winkler was Austin Earley, Morgan Dennis, Riley Plain and Grief.

In the JR 2 Medium go-kart class it was Ryan Maitland grabbing the lead and holding on to the lead until lap 4 in which Mark Maas would get by however they ruled that Maas took out Maitland so he was black flagged, a lap later the yellow came out for Colton Arment and Mark Maas getting together in turn 3. Shortly after another yellow would come out as Shawn Cooney would spin out in turn 3 to bring out the yellow. When all of the dirt flys it was Maitland coming across the line in 1st. Jamison Hampton would finish 2nd, Brock Badger was 3rd, Brooke Havens was 4th and Shawn Cooney was 5th. Glen Smith finished 7th but got credit the win in the JR 2 Animal division.

Stock Heavy feature would see Albert Wolfgram jump to the early lead but it would be Kody Havens making the pass on lap 3 to grab the lead away. Havens appeared to be going on to the easy win but the yellow flag would wave on lap 12 for Nate Maderfield in turn 4. Havens would hold on to win with Travis Hatch finishing 2nd and Wolfgram in 3rd. Adam Stevens and Chad Volk would round out the top 5.

In the Pro Bikes feature it was Clayton Webster getting his 2nd wholeshot feature win on the day. Duke Erickson finished a close 2nd, Keeeton Fleener was 3rd, Jayson Beal was 4th and Rick Kent was 5th.

Final feature of the day was the Pro Quads and it would be Blake Miller getting the wholeshot  win. George Hoal was trying to catch Miller but settled for 2nd. Doug Slyvester, DJ Robinson and David Petithory.

Racing came to and end just before 7 pm and it was a great day of racing. I want to thank the Thunder Dome Sponsors for their great support: Line X of Ottumwa, Waller Racing of Traer, Len's Wrecker Service of Independence, Moore Construction of Marshalltown, Motorsports Photography of Grimes, Chase Decals of Ames and A Day of Thunder on The Syrup in Mason City.

I also do want to apologize to all who attended if it sounded like i was being rude calling you up to the staging area all day long but the flagman we had was being a "butthead" all day long and it has been determined he will not be back because his lack of respect for everybody there including the workers. So we hope you all can come back to the Thunder Dome on December 1st and bring more along with so we can continue to break records inside the Thunder Dome.

Also if you would like to say thanks to the Central Iowa Fairboard for letitng this happen the past 3 winters and want to see more like Randy talked about the drivers meeting you can go to http://www.centraliowafairgrounds.com/ and them know. Thunder Dome Race #1 Recap

The Central Iowa Fairgrounds saw the roar of go-karts, quads and bikes for its 3rd season inside the covered arena building on Saturday afternoon. A total of 87 entries signed in to do battle on the slightly banked black dirt oval.

It was a picture perfect day weather wise for racing and many came out to enjoy the day, I was extremely pleased with the turn out and hope it continues all season.

First feature of the day was the Kid Kart feature and this would be pretty exciting as Rolend Stewart, Kinzer Jaennette and Keagan Thompson would battle for the lead for a while until Stewart would make contact with Jaennette and go flying landing back on the wheels but infortunately the chain broke. Jaennette would get a great run to go on and take his 1st win i believe in only a handful of races. Thompson was 2nd, Chase Selk ended up 3rd, Ryder Langenfeld was 4th and Cason Fitch was 5th.

Next up was the JR 2 Medium feature and because of the only 4 total JR 2 Karts on hand the Animals and Mediums were combined to compete but awarded separate points. All 4 karts would race close but when it was all settle it was Mark Maas crossing the line first, Jamison Hampton came across in 2nd but first as the best finishing animal. Brooke Havens came home 3rd but was second in the Medium class while Cassidy Nerland was 4th and finished 2nd in the Animals.

Again this year the Rookies would be split in to 2 different divisions for the Beginners and Advanced. In the Beginners feature it was Ty Solverson from Fort Dodge taking the early lead and going on to take the win over Jayson Alexander and Keagan Thompson.

In the Rookie Advanced feature it was a good battle between Brady Kohrs and Conner Kriegel. Kriegel would grab the early lead but would spin out giving the lead over to young Kohrs from Independence. Kohrs would hold on and take the win over fellow friend Landon Duffy. Gaige Stratton would finish 3rd, Conner Kriegel was 4th and Kamden Criss was 5th.

Mad Dogg Bikes would see Jayson Beal grab the whole shot win as he would lead from start to finish despite challenges from Keeton Fleener and Brandon Webster, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Justin Lichty, who was originally going to run Pit Bikes ended up running with the Mad Doggs ended up 4th and Promotor Brian Kauffman would end up 5th after having some issues.

The JR Quads were split up into 2 features based on size and motor. The first feature was for 125cc and under, it would be Triston Rethmeier getting the hole shot win over Kaden Polson. The 2nd feature was for 50cc and under, it would see Jaxxson Smith taking the win over Jackson Misel, Cason Fitch and Jackson Smith.

Only one JR Bike would show up and that was Jonathan Hall from Jackson, MN so he would grab the honor in that division.

Up next was the Open Amateur Bikes and it would be Clayton Webster taking the win over Hunter Even, Erich Voitel, Brandon Webster and Austin Davis.

Open Amateur Quads saw Vance Misel get the Whole Shot Win. David Petithory, Shane Robertson, Doug Slyvester and Blake Miller rounded out the top 5.

Unlimited All-Stars had only 1 entry so he were combined with the Open 4 Cycles but awarded separate points. Tim Bontrager would jump to the lead early and go on take the win over his good friend Mike Jones. Taylor Luke would end up 3rd. Scott Badker was 4th but awarded the win in the UAS division.

The next feature was one of the best features of the day and that was the very exciting JR 1 Medium feature. Keegan Havens would  lead all but the last 2 laps Landon Duffy would be in 2nd before having trouble with some lap traffic that would end up costing him quite a bit on the track. Ashton Gein would take over the lead late and take the win, however he was a JR 1 Animal so he would receive credit for winning the JR 1 Animal division. Keegan Havens would finish 2nd but be credit with the win in the JR 1 Medium. Nick Rose, Dayton Filloon and Walker Ashton finished 3rd through 5th.

Stock Heavys are the newly combined Flatheads and Clone Class and it was Jenae Gustin taking the lead and having the patience getting through the lap traffic to take the win over Kody Havens. Albert Wolfgram was 3rd, Cole Liekweg was 4th and Tyler Havens was 5th.

Open Pro Bikew would see Clayton Webster grab the early lead but it wouldn't last as he would be passed by Duke Erikson and then Clint Erikson. Duke would go on take the win with Clint finishing 2nd and Webster in 3rd. Erich Voitel and Jayson Beal would round out the top 5.

The Final feature of the day was the wild and crazy Open Pro Quads feature but it would be David Petithory grabbing the top spot and go on to take the win. Blake Miller was 2nd, Zac Brain was 3rd, Billy Petithory was 4th and Spencer Hopwood was 5th.

Next Race for the Thunder Dome Indoor Dirt Racing Series is Saturday November 17th and all of the division will be racing but there will be Thunder Dome Throwdown Classes and they are the JR 2 Mediums, Mad Dogg Bikes and Pro Bikes. Gates Open at 9a, Sign In 9-11:30a, Drivers Meeting at 11:45a, Hot Laps at Noon and Racing to Follow.
