Johnson Captures Miller 100, Korsmo Captures C.O.P.S. Racing for a Cause at Hawkeye Downs

Severe thunderstorms and a tornado halted activity across the state of Iowa on Friday night. Marshalltown Speedway was supposed to have Kids Night, but that is moved to next Friday night, July 18th, instead. IndyCar had their Friday activities at Iowa Speedway halted. With no racing on Friday, that meant I was going to find somewhere to go racing on Saturday.

After much decision and thought, I threw a dart at the board and messaged Hawkeye Downs Race Director Brian Gibson to see if I could get on the media list at the last minute to attend my first ever ASA Midwest Tour Race. He responded and invited me over, so I grabbed the camera and my clipboard and headed on over to Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to cover the 40th Running of the Hawkeye 100 presented by Van Meter. It was the first Miller 100 since 2011, but with it being the 100th Anniversary season of Hawkeye Downs, the Fleck Family came on board to sponsor the race one more time.

The ASA Midwest Tour made their 11th appearance at the famous racetrack since 2007, meaning the 2007-2011 installments were the Miller 100. The last several years it was known as the Hawkeye 100. Joining them on the card were the C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) Racing for a Cause, Legend Direct Midwest Asphalt Series Legends, and HD Dawgs. Legends honored fallen officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. HD Dawgs is a run-what-you-brung class with the exception that they cannot run under 22 seconds or they get disqualified.
50/50 raffle saw proceeds go to Variety Children's Charity. Between the 3 divisions there was a total of 47 cars signed in. The final checkers waved at 10:24pm.

The first feature is the HD Dawgs 15-lap feature event; in this class it's run what you brung, and you cannot run a lap time under 22 seconds. David Ballstaedt grabbed the race lead early, fending off challenges from Brandon Herb and Garrett Warren. Just before lap 4 was completed, the caution/red flag came out when Will Zamastil spun in turn three. Todd Ness and Max Leonard were collected as well, with Ness taking most of the damage. Warren took the lead away on the restart, and he held the top spot until the caution came out on lap nine when Leonard came to a stop at the top of turn four. Cory Houdek took the lead away on the restart and went on to capture the feature win. Warren finished second, Ballstaedt was third, Herb was fourth, and Corey Crispin was fifth.

Kevin Korsmo took full advantage of starting on the pole in the C.O.P.S. Racing for Cause 30-lap feature for the Midwest Asphalt Series Legends. Korsmo fought off Danny Lehmkuhl early. Korsmo pulled away, but then the middle portion was plagued with cautions. First caution on lap 11 when Lincoln Cain was spun by Kacey Korsmo in turn one, then lap 13 when Kyle Mitchell spun in turn one, and lap 14 when Dallas Kibbe spun in turn 4 from contact with Cain. Kevin Korsmo was not to be fazed and remained strong out front, but one final caution came out on lap 26 when Eon Lyles spun in turn one after contact from Lehmkuhl. Kevin Korsmo hung on to take the feature win. Seventh-place starter Jeremiah Davis captured second, Nick Slabaugh was third, Kacey Korsmo worked his way back to fourth, and Dallas Kibbe finished fifth.

The nightcap was the Miller 100 presented by Van Meter for the ASA Midwest Tour Late Models. Justin Mondeik jumped out to the race lead early and was trailed by Clay Curts, but Mondeik pulled away. Mondeik looked strong out front until the first caution came out on lap 12 when Joe Valento and Mitch Haver spun in turn three. Mondeik again looked strong out front, fending off Brent Edmunds and Penn Sauter. Mondeik continued to lead until lap traffic got heavier in front of him, allowing Levon Van Der Geest to reel him in. Van Der Geest took the race lead on lap 44, but Mondeik came right back to take it back on lap 45. Van Der Geest did not go away, as he regained the lead on lap 47. Van Der Geest led until lap 87, when 3-time Midwest Madness Tour Champion Casey Johnson took the lead away. Johnson was followed by two-time Midwest Tour winner at Hawkeye Downs Gabe Sommers. The caution came out on lap 93 when Haver spun in turn two and then again on lap 95 when Brent Edmunds spun in the wall top for turns three and four. Johnson hung on to take his second win on the tour this season. Sommers, Van Der Geest, Riley Stenjem, and John Beale rounded out the top five. Kody King, Cody Dempster, Penn Sauter, Ty Fredrickson, and Clay Curts were sixth through tenth.

Next up at Hawkeye Downs is the Tuesday Night Titans program sponsored by Legends Direct on Tuesday, July 15th. Hot Laps at 6:30p, Racing to Follow. Then it's a return to the Advance Auto Parts NASCAR Weekly Racing Series on Friday, July 18th. NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace will be on hand to race a Sport Mod on the pavement. Big 8 Series Late Models making their visit to the track. Hobby Stocks, Legends, Sportsman, and HD Dawgs round out the card. Big 8 Series qualifying at 5:45pm, hot laps at 6:40pm, and racing to follow.

Kemna Auto Night Thrills the Crowd at Sports Park Raceway

With my normal Friday night race track, Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway, taking Friday night off because it was the 4th of July, that meant my schedule was free to go somewhere else. After thinking about my choices of Figure 8 racing in What Cheer, Sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge, or CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, I settle on heading to Fort Dodge for racing and fireworks.

I rolled in to Jeff Frevert's Palace of Speed, Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Sports Park Raceway, around 5:30p for Kemna Auto Night at the races. Half-price admission to the grandstands, plus fans were treated to a firework show after the races.

Seventy-one cars signed in to tame the half-mile dirt oval. Jeff Frevert and the track prep team did an amazing job with the track; it was very racy all night. The final checkered flag was waved at 10:25p, and fireworks started around 10:35p and wrapped up around 11p.

It was a great night. It was also nice to meet up with some familiar faces like Braxton Flattery; it was nice to chat with him briefly after the drivers meeting. Your announcing is amazing. Another familiar face was Rodney Tomlinson, who is one of the announcers in Marshalltown on race nights where I flag. It was fun, so now let's get back to talking about the racing that happened.

The first feature of the night was the Matt's Tire Service USRA Tuners 10-lap feature. Braxton Wallace outwrestled David Kimmel for the race lead early. Wallace and Kimmel ran one and two the entire distance, with Wallace capturing the feature win in the caution-free event. Kimmel was second, and Dale Gatton, Charles Prime, and Danielle Lenz rounded out the top five.

In the Dillion Tree Service Vintage Series 10-lap feature, Todd Jansonius led from start to finish in the caution-free feature event. Rex Jansonius took second away from Brent McClendon on lap seven. Brent McClendon was third, and Josh McClendon finished fourth.

The initial start was called back in the Culver's of Fort Dodge and Carroll 4.6L Crown Vics 10-lapper. They went three wide on the following restart, and Andy Williams led the first lap. Tyler Crimmins took the top spot away on lap two. Crimmins lead was short-lived, as Nick Hogan took the lead away on lap four. Then the caution flags waved on lap six, three times in total for spins in turn two. Nick Hogan held off Nate Hogan on the restart to capture his third feature win at Sports Park. Nate Hogan finished second, Crimmins took third, Mike Layne finished fourth, and Larry Dupuy finished fifth.

Only four United Plant Services USRA Modifieds showed up; unfortunately, two of them broke in the heat race, so only two made the call for their 10-lap feature. Lyle Sathoff from Sherburn, Minnesota, jumped out to the lead and never looked back, taking win number two. Robert Bennett finished second.

The Pickett Auto Salvage USRA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature saw a pair of Crimmins, Riley and Jeremy Crimmins, battling for the race lead, while they would go three wide for third behind them. Riley Crimmins led lap one, but Jeremy Crimmins took the race lead on lap two. The first caution came out on lap three; Jonathon Hynes spun in turn two. Jeremy Crimmins continues to lead the way; the next two cautions come out on laps ten and eleven. Jeremy Crimmins continued to lead the way until Jeremy Wegner took it away briefly on lap 14. Jeremy Crimmins regained the lead when Wegner went off the top side; for Crimmins, it was win number three. Bryce Sommerfeld, Riley Crimmins, Branden Schaer, and Andrew Inman rounded out the top five.

Ty Griffith started sixth in the White Transfer & Storage USRA B-Mods 15-lap feature event, but by the end of lap one, he was the leader. "Rockstar" Rocky Caudle snatched up second early. A pair of race cautions on laps three and four for Eric Baker spinning. Griffith pulled away and went on to take the feature win; James Richert got by Caudle for second; Beemer also got by for third; Caudle finished fourth, and Hunter Poston was fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Marsh Concrete USRA Stock Cars 15-lap feature event. They went 4 wide on lap one with Myles Michehl, who started sixth going up on the cushion. Michehl took the top spot and began to pull away. Jason Purvis and Kyle Rose battle for second and third until Kansas City, Kansas' racer Rodney Schweizer reenters the battle. Schweizer took second away. The caution was displayed twice on lap six. Michehl looked to be taking the easy win until Schweizer tried a last-ditch effort on lap 15. Michehl edged out Schweizer to capture the feature win; Schweizer was in second. Rose, Jason Minnehan, and Purvis finished third through fifth.

Racing action was scheduled to continue at Sports Park Raceway on Saturday with the Pickett Auto Salvage USRA Hobby Stock Special; however, Mother Nature had other plans, and speedway officials decided to cancel the July 5th races. The next scheduled racing event is on Saturday, July 19th, for Kids Night. USRA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Mods, Hobby Stocks, and Tuners, along with the Vintage Cars and 4.6 Crown Vics, are on the card. Pits open at 5p, grandstands open at 6p, hot laps at 7p, and racing to follow.

The Iowa ATV and UTV Hare Scramble Series takes over the grounds on July 25-27, and the Dick Marsh Memorial USRA B-Mod Special is on August 9th. The Iowa Moto Series takes to Sports Park for the Fort Dodge motocross on August 23 and 24. XR Stock Car Rampage, $100,000 to win, takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 26 and 27, for the XR Stock Car Rampage, $100,000 to win. The King of the Crown Special for the Crown Vics is on August 30th, and the Season Championships are on September 6th.

Aikey Takes Three, Schmidt Claims Victories in Indee on Appliance Plus Night

It was a picture-perfect day to go racing on the final Saturday of the month of June. With my other two tracks not racing, my options were open on where to go. I wanted to catch a Super Late Model show, so it was down to Independence, Webster City, or Corning. As the time came to decide, I was still unsure where I would go but planned ahead to decide as soon as I got in the car. Well after making the little over an hour drive, I arrived at my destination.

One hundred fourteen cars signed in to tame the 3/8-mile, banked dirt track on the Buchanan County fairgrounds. The racing action was exciting all night; a few times throughout the night they went four wide. No surprise Mike Van Genderen produced another fantastic racing surface. Great job, Dana Benning, Jeff Kropf, and the rest of the track crew too for keeping the track in amazing shape all night long. The final checkered flag was waved at 10:13pm. The night was sponsored by Appliance Plus US Cellular of Independence and Oelwein.

The first feature of the night was the June 14th make-up feature for the Cue Rentals IMCA Sport Compacts, 15 laps the distance. Harrison Horn and Ethan Hogan led the field to the green flag, but neither one of them led lap one; fourth-place starter Chris Pittman grabbed the race lead and was followed by Tyler and Christopher Mannion. Pittman pulled away and looked to be heading on to the easy feature win, but a caution came out on lap 14 for debris in turn one, resulting in a green-white-checkered. However, before they would go back to green, Pittman and the Mannions got together on the backstretch, getting ready to go back to the green, forcing the caution light to remain on for debris on the backstretch. Pittman held on to capture his first feature win this year in Indee; however, his night ended shortly after the checkers as he blew up. Spencer Roggentien worked his way from ninth to capture second. Tyler Mannion finished third, Horn was fourth, and tenth-place starter Cristian Grady took fifth.

In the June 14th make-up feature for the Waterloo Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds, Chris Snyder grabbed the race lead from pole sitter Mike Burbridge, while Jeff Aikey was working his way from ninth place. Snyder continued to lead the way until Aikey reeled him in and applied pressure. Aikey took over the top spot on lap eight and checked out to capture win number 1 in Indee this year and the first win of his three on the night; more on that later. Snyder finished second, thirteenth-place starter Kolton Osborn finished third, Dustin Kroening was fourth, and tenth-place starter Troy Cordes captured fifth.

After the heat races and make-up features were complete, MVG and the crew went to work on the track to get it ready for the regular night's features presented by Appliance Plus US Cellular of Independence and Oelwein.

Performance Bodies IMCA Hobby Stocks 16-lap feature event was first up after the track prep session. Carson James outwrestled Jeremiah Wilson for the race lead early. The first and only caution came out on lap five when Quinton Miller and Garrett Ball spun in turn four. James was not fazed as he held off Wilson and Conner Clubine on the restart and then held off a charge from Brad Graham late. James went to take his first feature win in Indee. Wilson, Graham, Dalton Weepie, and Clubine round out the top five.

Next up on the race track is Wolfey's Outback of Quasqueton IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18-lap feature event. Tyler Carey started third, but by the end of lap one, he was in the top spot. Curt Smeins ran second until Brett Thomas made the pass and took second away. Carey and Thomas ran one and two until the caution came out on lap six for debris from Kole Quam's car that came off in turn two. Carey held off Thomas on the restart; meanwhile, Brady Hilmer began to apply pressure on Thomas for second. The final race caution was issued on lap ten when Ben Shannon spun in the bottom of turn four. Carey got a fantastic restart, but Hilmer got an even better restart. Hilmer took the top spot away from Carey on lap 13 and never looked back, going on to take win number three in Indee. Ninth-place starter Tony Olson grabbed second, eleventh-place starter Will Wolf finished third, Carey fell back to fourth, and Illinois's Rayce Mullen was fifth.

Jace Knight led the first lap of the Cue Rentals IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature event, but just after the lap was scored, the caution came out. The first caution was for Knight when he broke going into turn one and going off the top. That handed the lead over to Clayton Loeb, and he managed to hold off Devin Jones until the second caution on lap three, when "Cheddar" Jason Petersen blew up, leaving debris all over turn three. Spencer Roggentien worked his way from tenth place and snatched the lead away on the restart. The final race caution came out on lap six for debris on the frontstretch. Roggentien had to contend with Devin Jones on the restart; he managed to hold him, but Jones refused to go away. Jones grabbed the lead on lap 13 and claimed his second feature win. Roggentien, ninth-place starter Cristian Grady, Loeb, and thirteenth-place starter Campbell Tressler rounded out the top five.

In the regular feature for the Waterloo Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature event; Kyle Bentley led the first two laps before the caution came out when Jason Morehouse sent Dustin Kroening off the top of turn four. Kroening was able to get his spot back, and Morehouse was sent to the tail. Seventh-place starter Jeff Aikey was able to take the top spot away on the restart. Aikey led even through the last caution on lap 16 when Patrick Flannagan went off the top of turn one. Aikey went on to capture his second Modified feature win of the night, the second of his three on the night. Troy Cordes came from tenth to second. Kroening captured third, Jerry King was fourth, and Brennen Chipp was in fifth.

Christie Door Company IMCA Stock Cars' 20-lap feature event lived up to the name of "Class Too Tough To Tame." Ty Hill led the first lap by a slim margin over Dru Kueker; Kueker took the top spot away on lap two. Shortly after the first caution came out when Rob Twaites came to a stop in turns one and two. Kueker led until Jay Schmidt took the top spot away. Schmidt pulled away and looked to be cruising to the easy feature win. The caution flag was waved two more times: lap 17 for Rhett Ehmen spinning off the top of turn four and lap 18 for Jarod Weepie spinning exiting turn two. Schmidt held off points leader Tom Schmitt to take his second feature win of the weekend; he won Friday night at Marshalltown. After Schmidt and Schmitt, it was Kueker, eleventh-place starter Dakoda Sellers, and tenth-place starter Cole Mather.

The final feature of the night was the Scott Webb Concrete Pro Late Models for a 25-lap feature. Curt Martin outwrestled Jeff Aikey for the early lead. Martin looked strong and checked out only to see the lap traffic slow him down just a bit, allowing Aikey, Nick Marolf, and CJ Horn to reel him in. The caution came out on lap 19 when Martin spun in turn two; that handed the lead over to Aikey. However, before a lap was completed, the caution came out again when Marolf was spun by Logan Duffy, resulting in Kelly Pestka and Curt Martin having nowhere to go. Aikey hung on for the final six laps to capture his first late model win this season and his third feature of the night for the racing hall of famer. Horn, J.D. Auringer, thirteenth-place starter Travis Smock, and fourteenth-place starter Luke Goedert rounded out the top five.

World of Outlaws in Indee and Harris Clash in Boone Both Postponed

My plan was to head to the Independence Motor Speedway for Monday Madness featuring the Real American Beer World of Outlaws Late Model Series presented by DirtVision, but Indee and World of Outlaws officials agreed to postpone it to a later date. They are working together to find a viable reschedule date and will have more information when it's announced.

So since my Monday night was free now, I was asked to come out of the bullpen and do some fill-in PA announcing for Marshalltown High School during their softball doubleheader with Highway 30 rival Ames, but unfortunately, they made the decision because of storms during the times of the games, and they are postponed to a later date. As I type this, the plan may be to play the doubleheader tomorrow night since it looks a little better than it did.

Tuesday night, my plan was to attend the 34th Annual Harris Clash presented by Wehrs Machine and Racing Products, but due to a not-so-favorable weather forecast, Bob Harris, Boone Speedway, and IMCA officials have decided to postpone to save money for unnecessary travel when the chances are slim. The rescheduled date is Tuesday, August 5th. IMCA officials will now begin to put together the return of Iowa Speedweek. Information with more details on dates and participating tracks will be announced as soon as it's figured out.

It's only Monday, and the Foxman is now batting 0 for 3 with 3 strikeouts this week. I may have a softball doubleheader tomorrow; if not, I will either plan to make a trip to Stuart for the Ron Little Memorial or the Gary Wilson Memorial featuring the SLMR Late Models at Osky on Wednesday. Friday night, it's back to Marshalltown for flagging duties during the Minute Man Printing Night featuring $500 to win Sport Compacts. Saturday night, my options are Hamilton County Speedway for the Tri-State Late Model Series and Bill Rice Memorial or Independence with the Karl Chevrolet Pro Late Model Tour, or maybe somewhere else; I guess we will see but where ever I end up I just might bring the camera along.

Smith wins the Hawkeye Challenge, Moffitt claims victory in Sprint Kings, and Gustin takes three wins in Boone.

Friday morning rain drowned the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway, getting roughly 3-4 inches of rain in a span of four hours. Even the humidity or the wind didn't help, as the grounds were very saturated all day long. Now on to Saturday, despite it being hot and humid, I made the decision to adventure over to the Boone Speedway for Thrive Hawkeye Challenge Night.

Before Iowa's Action Track could get to the Thrive Hawkeye Challenge Night, they had to finish up Farley's Pre-Owned Vehicles Smackdown Night from the prior week; once that was complete, then it was on to the Thrive Hawkeye Challenge Night. A total of two hundred and twelve cars signed in, including 11 Sprint Kings Sprints. At one of the intermission breaks, there was a candy toss for the kids. Racing Action started at 6p and was fantastic all night long right up to the final checkered flag that waved at 12:52a.

The first five features of the night were the June 14th make-up features; the first one up was the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event. Jaxon Carr was scheduled to start fourth, but because the outside front row starter was not there, Carr moved to the front row, and he took advantage by grabbing the top spot. The only caution came out just after the completion of lap one when Ryder Hartley spun in turn two and Cole Paul in turn one. Carr was not fazed as he held off Ben George, Terry Brown, Bryan Zehm, and Charlie Brown on the restart. Carr led the way until George was able to wrangle the lead away on lap 12. George went on to take the feature win. Carr, Charlie Brown, Zehm, and Garrett Barber round out the top five.

Next up was the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18-lap make-up feature event. Johnathon Logue led the first eight laps before the caution came out when Jessiah Taylor spun in turn four. On the restart, eleventh-place starter Matt Avila took the top spot away from Logue and tried to pull away. Lap ten saw the caution come out when Dayton Swatek and Mike Smith got together in turns one and two. Avila got a fantastic restart, fending off Logue and Randy Havlik. The caution came out one more time on lap 15 when Hunter Clement spun in turn four. Avila went on to take his third feature win in Boone this season. Havlik came home second, tenth-place starter Cory Pestotnik finished third, Camdan Vincent was fourth, and twelfth-place starter Dusty Masolini took fifth.

Jimmy Gustin started fourth, but by the end of lap one in the IMCA Modifieds 20-lap make-up feature event. Gustin would lead all the laps in the caution-free feature. Ninth-place starter Greg Elliott worked his way up to grab runner-up honors. Trevor Fitz took third, eleventh-place starter Jake McBirnie was fourth, and tenth-place starter Izac Mallicoat took fifth.

Kyle Everts grabbed the top spot early in the IMCA Stock Cars make-up 20-lap feature event. The caution came out after lap 1 was scored, when Jay Schmidt, Josh Daniels, and David Smith spun entering turn one. Everts hung on to the top spot until lap four, when seventh-place starter Jimmy Gustin was able to work his way by. Just like the Modifieds, Gustin pulled away; the only thing slowing him down was the debris caution on lap six and the red flag when Jerry Gifford rolled off the top of turn three. Gustin went on to claim his second win of the night. Eleventh-place starter Devin Smith, Doug Smith, Everts, and eighteenth-place starter Johnathon Logue finished second through fifth, respectively.

The last of the make-up features was the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stocks make-up. Mitchell McNeill led the first lap before Corey VanDerWilt wrestled the top spot away on lap two. VanDerWilt was chased by Solomon Bennett and eleventh-place starter Eric Knutson, but he was able to fend them off to capture his first win in Boone. Matt McDonald was able to capture second ahead of Knutson. Knutson settled for third, Will Smith finished fourth, and Bennett fell back to fifth.

The Hawkeye Challenge featured 24 cars from six different classes. IMCA divisions had the points leader and the top three in passing points from the heat races as their representatives, while the Sprint Cars took the top four in passing points. Sprint Cars had to go 25 laps, Modifieds 23, Sport Mods 22, Mod Lites 22, Stock Cars 21, and Hobby Stocks 20, which means in this 25-lap race, the Hobby Stocks started five laps ahead of the Sprint Cars. Eric Knutson was officially the leader for the first 18 laps before Johnathon Logue took the lead away in his stock car on lap 19. Sport Mod rookie Mike Smith captured the lead with 2 laps to go as the sprint cars were making their way through the field. Smith went on to capture the overall win and the sport mod win. Logue finished second, capturing the Stock Cars; Owen Carlson finished third, capturing the Sprint Cars; Doug Smith was fourth; and Charlie Brown was the top Mod Lite and finished fifth. Knutson came across in eighth and captured the Hobby Stocks, while Izac Mallicoat captured the Modifieds with a fifteenth-place finish.

Now it's time for the regular night feature events. The first up was the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event. Bryan Zehm grabbed the top spot early, fending off Dillon Bush. The first caution came out when Ryder Hartley spun in turn one on lap six; he did it again on lap eight, but in turn three. Zehm remained strong out front, but this time tenth-place starter Austin Gray worked his way into second and began to apply pressure. Gray took the lead away on lap 12. The last race caution came out on lap 13 when Garrett Barber nearly took a tumble in turn two and made contact with Bush, forcing him to spin out in turn two. Barber was able to keep it moving and got his spot back. Gray held off Zehm and Barber on the restart and went on to take his third win in Boone. Barber, Zehm, thirteenth-place starter Ben George, and twelfth-place starter Chaz Baca, driving Joel Huggins car, rounded out the top five.

Danny Concelman from Colorado Springs, Colorado, led the first lap of the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18-lap feature event. Tyler Carey took the lead away on lap two, and Kenser Ellis grabbed the lead briefly on lap six. Ninth-place starter Cam Reimers worked his way through and took the top spot on lap nine. The only race caution came out on lap nine, when Ryan Leeman spun in turn one. Reimers held off Carey, eleventh-place starter Mike Smith, Randy Havlik, and twelfth-place starter Matt Avila. Reimers went on to take his third feature win of the season. Smith came home second, Avila was third, Havlik finished fourth, and Carey was fifth.

Sprint Kings Sprints made their first-ever appearance at the Boone Speedway, and it was time for their 20-lap feature event. Brett Moffitt, a familiar face to Central Iowa, now calling Mooresville, North Carolina, home, returned to race. Moffitt outwrestled Tyler Thompson for the race lead early. The only caution came out on lap 2 when Logan Brown spun in turn two and Carl Wade spun to avoid making contact. Moffitt continued to lead the way but received pressure from Thompson. Moffitt was using the top side, and Thompson was on the bottom. Moffitt was finally able to get rid of Thompson and pull away, lapping most of the field to capture the win worth $1,000. Jackson Gray, a former Micro Sprint racer, came home second, Thompson fell back to third, Koddy Hildreth was fourth, and Owen Carlson was fifth.

In the IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature event, Kaylin Lopez, driving a Zane DeVilbiss hot rod, captured the top spot early and was trailed by Matthew Meinecke. The first caution came out on lap 9 when Paul Nagle, running third at the time, spun in turn two. Lopez held off Meinecke and Cory Sauerman on the restart and looked to be heading on to the easy win until a caution came out on lap 16 for debris on the front stretch. Lopez held on to take his first feature win in Boone this season. Sauerman, Meinecke, twelfth-place starter Jake McBirnie, and thirteenth-place starter Trevor Fitz rounded out the top five.

Alan Van Gorp led the first lap of the IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event before Jeff Mueller took the race lead away. Mueller continued to lead but received major pressure from Jay Schmidt. The first caution came out on lap six; Mueller held off Schmidt and Doug Smith on the restart. Twelfth-place starter Jimmy Gustin worked his way through the field and took the top spot away on lap nine. McBirnie followed Gustin's pursuit, coming from thirteenth place to second. Gustin remained strong out front, including 2 more cautions on laps 13 and 15. Gustin went on to take his third feature win of the night and third feature win in the stock cars at Boone. McBirnie settled for second, Mueller slipped back to third, Schmidt back to fourth, and fifteenth-place starter Devin Smith finished fifth.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature event; the caution came out before lap one was completed. On the following restart, Jacob Monson led the first four laps before Skylar Pruitt took the lead away on lap five. The caution was waived twice again on lap six. Pruitt continued to lead until mechanical issues ended his night on lap ten, which handed the lead over to eleventh-place starter Eric Knutson, who had worked his way up to second. Knutson then held off twelfth-place starter Joe Doran late to take win number 3 of the year in Boone. Doran finished second, tenth-place starter Solomon Bennett in third, twenty-second-place starter Kolby Sabin in fourth, and Brett Maasdam in fifth.

Next up at the Boone Speedway is the 34th Annual Harris Clash presented by Wehrs Machine and Racing Products on Tuesday, June 24th. It's the first time the Harris Clash is at Iowa's Action Track since 1994, and for the first time, it will also include the IMCA Stock Cars. IMCA Modifieds are $4,000 to win; IMCA Sport Mods are $2,000 to win, and IMCA Stock Cars will be $3,000 to win. Pit gates open at 3:30p, grandstands at 5p, hot laps at 6p, the draw closes at 6:15p, and racing starts at 7p.

Bleess and Luinenburg Capture World's Collide Showdown Victories in Mason City

This year has felt a little weird not blog recapping race nights, but it's been a lot of fun flagging races at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway and the Warren County Speedway in Indianola and race directing and scoring races at the Brooklyn Raceway. So nights I am not working, and I go, I will try to write a blog recap and capture some photos.

After a few rainouts on Saturday and the weather looking sketchy, I chose to spend my Saturday night off at home. That led into Sunday. As I was sitting around watching the NASCAR race from Michigan on Amazon Prime Video, I said to myself, Maybe take in a Sunday night race somewhere. So at 2:15 p.m., I decided to grab my camera, clipboard, and scanner radios and make a 2-hour drive to Mason City for racing action. I arrived around 4:30p and walked back in my house at 11:45p.

Sunday night at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway was the World's Collide Showdown featuring the USRA Kevko Northern Lights Modified Series presented by Real Racing Wheels and the USRA KS Engineering Iron Man Stock Car Series driven by Terminator Chassis. USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks, and Outlaw Mini Mods joined in to tame the 1/3-mile high-banked oval. A total of one hundred and twelve cars checked in on Sunday night, including 33 Iron Man Stock Cars and 19 Northern Lights Modifieds. The final checkered flag was waived at 9:33p.

Todd Staley and the track team stayed ahead of the racing surface and tried to produce a fantastic racetrack. That proved to be the case because after the Outlaw Mini Mods feature, they took the road grader out and did some track work to produce a fantastic racing surface for the remaining 4 features. That plan worked out because there were fantastic battles throughout the fields. Great job by Bryan Denekas and Braxton Flattery on the announcing races.

The Outlaw Mini Mod Series 15-lap feature was up first; Wyatt Medlin jumped out to the early race lead but received heavy pressure from Dalton Faber. Faber grabbed the top spot away on lap four. Shortly after the caution came out, Lukas Kloster came to a stop at the top of turn two. Faber maintained the top spot until lap six, when Medlin took back over the lead. On lap seven, caution came out again when Kloster stopped again in turn two. Medlin held off Faber and Ben Mattick to claim the win. Mattick finished second, Faber was third, Brent Tweed was fourth, and Nathan Kilwine finished fifth.

After a brief track work session including the road grader, next up was the USRA Hobby Stock 20-lap feature event. Zac Smith outwrestled Joshua Monson for the early race lead. Smith began to pull away and looked to be heading on to the feature win, only to see the caution come out on lap 12, forcing the field to bunch up again. The first caution on lap 12 was when Parker Anderson and Oliver Monson got together on the front stretch; then on the following restart it came out for debris on the back stretch. Smith held on to the top spot until seventh-place starter Kolby Goepel powered his way to the race lead with two laps to go. Goepel hung on to take the feature win, with Smith finishing second, tenth-place starter Scott Dobel coming across in third, Joshua Monson finishing fourth, and Anderson rounding out the top five.

In the Window World of Mason City USRA B-Mods 20-lap feature, George Nordman grabbed the top spot from the outside front row starting spot. Nordman held off Colton Kramer, Oliver Sackett, Kaeden Bronner, and Ben Moudry. The caution came out on lap eight for debris on the back stretch. Nordman maintained the race lead, but the caution came out again on lap 12. Corey Klouse spun in turn two, and then on the restart Kramer spun in turn four, collecting Bronner, Jake Richards, Nate Albrant, Jayme Hiller, and Don Schaefer. Nordman hung on to capture the feature win. Richards, Moudry, Tianna Mithun, and Bronner rounded out the top five.

Next up was the KS Engineering USRA Iron Man Stock Car Series driven by Terminator Chassis 30-lap feature event, sponsored by Christie Door Company. Pat Graham got by Minnesota's Derek Green to take the early race lead. Graham's lead was short-lived as Brandon Hare took the lead away on lap four. The first caution came out on lap five when Chris Hovden spun in turn three, collecting Randy Foote, Todd Staley, Brock Badger, Weston Koop, Paul Conrad, and Todd Reitzler. Hare held off Graham and Green on the restart. The next caution came out on lap eight when Kevin Opheim spun Chance Larson in turn two. Hare led until lap ten, when Justin Luinenburg took the lead away. Luinenburg held off the rest of the field, and not even a lap 26 caution for debris would prevent him from capturing the win. Luinenburg became the 13th different winner in the reborn Iron Man Stock Car Series in 13 races this season. Hare finished a strong second, followed by Green, twelfth-place starter Chance Hollatz, and eighteenth-place starter Dylan Clinton. Green leads over Rodney Schweizer by 16 points and Graham by 27 points in the series points standings.

The final feature of the night was the USRA Kevko Northern Lights Modified Series 30-lap feature event. Rodney Sanders and Jacob Bleess led the field to the green flag; Bleess would manage to lead the first six laps. Sanders used the top side to take the top spot away on lap seven and started to pull away. However, when Sanders encountered heavy lap traffic, Bleess was able to gain ground and even used a lap car to his advantage and get by Sanders on lap 25. Bleess held on to claim the $2,000 feature win. Sanders, fresh off a USMTS win on Saturday in Louisiana, came home second. Brandon Davis finished third, Joe Chisholm was fourth, and Shadren Turner was fifth. Davis and Chisholm are tied at the top of the points standings with 278 points. Bleess is 6 points back, followed by Sanders, 26 points back.

Racing action continues at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City on Sunday, June 15th, with the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series presented by Pritchard Family Auto Stores and Fertilizer Equipment Specialists. USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks, and Outlaw Mini Mods round out the card. Pits open at 3p, grandstands open at 4p, pit meeting at 5p, hot laps at 5:15p, and racing to follow.
