Thornton, Shryock, Sachau, and Pruitt Claim Salute to Veterans Win in Boone

When I saw that my schedule was open for the Salute to Veterans Night at the Boone Speedway; it was a no-brainer that I would make the trip over to capture the night with pictures and a blog recap. I got in the car around 2:45pm and arrived a little after 3:30pm to check out the Salute to Veterans Fan Zone; the final checkered flag was waved at 12:55am, and by the time I got back to the car and drove home, I pulled into my driveway at 2am.

Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Tour was supposed to get started on Wednesday night at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer; however, that night was postponed and will be made up on Wednesday, August 6th, part of IMCA Iowa Speedweek. So instead it got It started at the Kossuth County Speedway in Algona, the birthplace of the Salute to Veterans race. Then after taking Friday night off, it returned to Iowa's Action Track, Boone Speedway, on Saturday. Hunting with Heroes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports veterans through patriotism and outdoor pursuits in Lakota, Iowa.

Drivers racing the Salute to Veterans themes included Tripp Gaylord, Nick Meyer, and Cody Knecht in the modifieds; Shelby Williams, Ryan Roath, and Troy Jerovetz in the stock cars; Payce Herrera, Matt Avila, and Justin Klynsma in the sport mods; and Dylan Nelson, Josh Sidles, and Skylar Pruitt in the hobby stocks. The overall best Salute to Veterans car winner and Modified car winner voted on by the veterans went to Modified driver Nick Meyer from Whittemore with his US American Legion scheme. Stock car driver Shelby Williams of Bonham, Texas, won the Stock Cars vote with his "We The People" scheme. ripp Gaylord had the D-Day Invasion on June 6th, 1944 tribute; Cody Knecht had the Lifetime of Service scheme; Ryan Roath had the Coast Guard Tribute; Troy Jerovetz had Vietnam and the Orange Haze scheme; Payce Herrera had the 9/11 Tribute; Matt Avila had the "Happy Birthday Marines" and 2nd Combat Engineers scheme; Justin Klynsma had the Operation Iraqi Freedom Tribute; Dylan Nelson had the Hunting with Heroes Flush; Josh Sidles had the "We Build. We Fight!" U.S. Navy Seabees scheme; and Skylar Pruitt had the Iowa National Guard 34th Infantry - Camp Dodge scheme. Smith Farms from Lake City gave $2,000 from a fundraising BBQ they held, and Mike Smith bested his father, David Smith, in the Hunting with Heroes Facebook Fan Vote. All the Salute to Veterans wraps and drivers suits was presented by Rush by Austin Witt with support from Sybesma Graphics.

A total of two hundred thirty-eight cars checked in for the Salute to Veterans Night at Boone Speedway sponsored by Woodruff Construction and Elmquist Towing. 49 IMCA Modifieds, 49 IMCA Stock Cars, 52 IMCA Sport Mods, 61 IMCA Hobby Stocks, and 27 IMCA Mod Lites; all classes had 6 heats and at least 2 B-features except for the Mod Lites. The racing action was exciting and intense all night long; Dirt Doctor Rod Robbins and his team need to give themselves a pat on the back, as Super Nationals are a month away. Last night's track was fantastic and in Super Nationals form.

One special race was on the card for the night, and that was the Stock Cars Salute to Veterans Race of Champions presented by Gary Myers and Family. $1,000 top prize and a veteran-carved trophy to the winner. Kevin Opheim outdueled Shelby Williams for the race lead early and never looked back, going on to take the win. Johnathon Logue came home second, David Smith was third, Williams slipped back to fourth, and Troy Jerovetz was fifth.

First up was the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event. "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins grabbed the top spot early, fending off Austin Gray and Dillon Raffurty. Raffurty managed to take second away from Gray on lap three and then the race lead on lap four. Raffurty's time out front was short-lived, as he experienced mechanical issues on lap eight and exited to the infield. Gray reclaimed the lead and tried to pull away from the rest of the field. The only caution came out on lap 12 when Garrett Barber spun in turns one and two; as the yellow came out, it was quickly replaced with the red flag when Cory Sonner rolled in turn two. Gray held off Ben George and Bryan Zehm in the final eight laps to capture his sixth feature win in Boone. George finished second, Zehm was third, Jaxon Carr came across the line in fourth, and Huggins was fifth.

Colorado Springs, Colorado, racer Danny Concelman and Kelley's Cam Reimers led the field to the green flag in the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20-lap Salute to Veterans feature event. Reimers grabbed the top spot and looked strong out front as he pulled away; meanwhile, Randy Havlik and Jake Sachau battled it out for second and third. The first caution came out on lap eight when David Schwartz and Payce Herrera got together in turn two. Sachau ended up taking the lead away from Reimers on lap 13. The final caution came out on lap 16 for debris (spring) in turn two. Sachau held off several challenges from Reimers, Matt Avila, and Mike Smith late to capture the feature win worth $1,000. Smith, Reimers, eleventh-place starter Alec Fett, and Lonsdale, Minnesota's Zach Davis, rounded out the top five.

Dylan Thornton took full advantage of his pole starting position in the IMCA Modifieds 30-lap Salute to Veterans feature by taking the early lead. The first caution came out shortly after the completion of lap one when Nick Meyer spun in turns three and four. Thornton held off Kelly Shryock but couldn't get separation because the caution was displayed again on lap three when Colton Nelson spun in turn two. Thornton was able to pull away, but one more caution came out on lap 11 when Josh Most and Meyer got together in turns three and four. Thornton this time was able to get a great restart and pull away and cruise on to take the $3,000 to win feature win. Kollin Hibdon was second, a nineteenth-place starter. Tom Berry Jr. came home in third, twenty-first-place starter Todd Shute was fourth, and eighteenth-place starter Jake McBirnie was fifth.

In the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 25-lap Salute to Veterans feature event, the veteran Kelly Shryock from Fertile jumped out to the race lead. John Oliver Jr. from West Burlington tried to apply pressure but couldn't get by, allowing Shryock to pull away. Only one race caution came out on lap 19 for debris (pipe) on the top side of turn two. Shryock was not going to be denied as he held off Oliver and Cayden Carter to capture the feature win worth $2,000. Carter got by Oliver for second, Oliver was third, Jake Master took fourth, and tenth-place starter Jimmy Gustin captured fifth.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks Salute to Veterans 20-lapper. Skylar Pruitt outwrestled Adam Hensel early for the race lead and pulled away. Pruitt then fought off eighth-place starter Dylan Nelson and "Topless" Joe Doran, tenth-place starter, late in the race. Pruitt went on to capture his second feature win in Boone this year, but this one was worth $1,000 and had a special meaning. Nelson, Doran, Hensel, and eleventh-place starter Will Smith rounded out the top five.

Next week, the month of August kicks off with a Saturday Night Series Weekly Race Night, plus the IMCA Sport Compacts swarm in for their Pre-Super Nationals Tune-Up. Dale DeFrance Memorial Race Postponed; Grundy County Fair Races?

With the rain early in the week and Thursday morning, the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway was forced to postpone the Dale DeFrance Memorial presented by Vinyl Cup Records featuring the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series to Friday, August 22nd, because the grounds were extremely saturated.

Marshalltown has adjusted their August schedule: August 1st will be Midwest Liquid Systems Night featuring $1,000 to win Stock Cars, August 8th will be KIX101.1 Make-up Night, August 15th will now be the North 3rd Avenue Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championships, the Dale DeFrance Memorial will be on the 22nd, followed by the Karl Auto Group Showdown at Motown on August 29th.

IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, and IMCA Hobby Stocks will be all the nights. IMCA Sport Compacts and IMCA Mod Lites race all nights except for the rescheduled Dale DeFrance Memorial.

For more information check out marshalltownspeedway.com or follow Marshalltown Speedway on Facebook. Follow the Dale DeFrance Memorial Race on Facebook for all the details about that night.

So that meant my Friday night was open to go somewhere else for racing. My initial plan was to head to the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City for the Malvern Bank 360 Sprints or head to the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton for the Gary Reinhart Memorial, but after it was apparent that I was not going to make it in time for either of those races, there was only one option left. The Grundy County Fairgrounds in Grundy Center was having Grundy County Fair Figure 8 Races, so the decision was made to make the 30-minute drive and capture some pictures.

I say capture images because I did not get names of the drivers, so there won't be much of a blog recap. I arrived around 5:45pm, walked around the pits for a bit, grabbed something to eat, and then got ready to take pictures. I want to thank the Grundy County Fairboard for letting me come and capture some pictures.

A total of one hundred and three entries checked in over 5 classes. The largest class was the Small Cars with 40, so they were split into 2 features. Old School Figure 8 class had 20 entries, Mini-Madness had 21 entries, Cruisers had 12, and Open Figure 8 had 9 cars. All cars transferred out of the heats with no b-features since they had Tyler Richton & The High Bank Boys playing after the races in the 1851 Pavilion. The Grundy County Speedway Figure 8 Races are working in conjunction with the Butler County Figure 8 Races in Allison, and they share the same rules.

One More Race is a 2-day special at the Grundy County Speedway on August 22nd and 23rd. Bands after the Races are No Smoking on the Grounds on the 22nd and The Smokin' Yotes on the 23rd in the 1851 Pavilion.

Johnson Captures Miller 100, Korsmo Captures C.O.P.S. Racing for a Cause at Hawkeye Downs

Severe thunderstorms and a tornado halted activity across the state of Iowa on Friday night. Marshalltown Speedway was supposed to have Kids Night, but that is moved to next Friday night, July 18th, instead. IndyCar had their Friday activities at Iowa Speedway halted. With no racing on Friday, that meant I was going to find somewhere to go racing on Saturday.

After much decision and thought, I threw a dart at the board and messaged Hawkeye Downs Race Director Brian Gibson to see if I could get on the media list at the last minute to attend my first ever ASA Midwest Tour Race. He responded and invited me over, so I grabbed the camera and my clipboard and headed on over to Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to cover the 40th Running of the Hawkeye 100 presented by Van Meter. It was the first Miller 100 since 2011, but with it being the 100th Anniversary season of Hawkeye Downs, the Fleck Family came on board to sponsor the race one more time.

The ASA Midwest Tour made their 11th appearance at the famous racetrack since 2007, meaning the 2007-2011 installments were the Miller 100. The last several years it was known as the Hawkeye 100. Joining them on the card were the C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) Racing for a Cause, Legend Direct Midwest Asphalt Series Legends, and HD Dawgs. Legends honored fallen officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. HD Dawgs is a run-what-you-brung class with the exception that they cannot run under 22 seconds or they get disqualified.
50/50 raffle saw proceeds go to Variety Children's Charity. Between the 3 divisions there was a total of 47 cars signed in. The final checkers waved at 10:24pm.

The first feature is the HD Dawgs 15-lap feature event; in this class it's run what you brung, and you cannot run a lap time under 22 seconds. David Ballstaedt grabbed the race lead early, fending off challenges from Brandon Herb and Garrett Warren. Just before lap 4 was completed, the caution/red flag came out when Will Zamastil spun in turn three. Todd Ness and Max Leonard were collected as well, with Ness taking most of the damage. Warren took the lead away on the restart, and he held the top spot until the caution came out on lap nine when Leonard came to a stop at the top of turn four. Cory Houdek took the lead away on the restart and went on to capture the feature win. Warren finished second, Ballstaedt was third, Herb was fourth, and Corey Crispin was fifth.

Kevin Korsmo took full advantage of starting on the pole in the C.O.P.S. Racing for Cause 30-lap feature for the Midwest Asphalt Series Legends. Korsmo fought off Danny Lehmkuhl early. Korsmo pulled away, but then the middle portion was plagued with cautions. First caution on lap 11 when Lincoln Cain was spun by Kacey Korsmo in turn one, then lap 13 when Kyle Mitchell spun in turn one, and lap 14 when Dallas Kibbe spun in turn 4 from contact with Cain. Kevin Korsmo was not to be fazed and remained strong out front, but one final caution came out on lap 26 when Eon Lyles spun in turn one after contact from Lehmkuhl. Kevin Korsmo hung on to take the feature win. Seventh-place starter Jeremiah Davis captured second, Nick Slabaugh was third, Kacey Korsmo worked his way back to fourth, and Dallas Kibbe finished fifth.

The nightcap was the Miller 100 presented by Van Meter for the ASA Midwest Tour Late Models. Justin Mondeik jumped out to the race lead early and was trailed by Clay Curts, but Mondeik pulled away. Mondeik looked strong out front until the first caution came out on lap 12 when Joe Valento and Mitch Haver spun in turn three. Mondeik again looked strong out front, fending off Brent Edmunds and Penn Sauter. Mondeik continued to lead until lap traffic got heavier in front of him, allowing Levon Van Der Geest to reel him in. Van Der Geest took the race lead on lap 44, but Mondeik came right back to take it back on lap 45. Van Der Geest did not go away, as he regained the lead on lap 47. Van Der Geest led until lap 87, when 3-time Midwest Madness Tour Champion Casey Johnson took the lead away. Johnson was followed by two-time Midwest Tour winner at Hawkeye Downs Gabe Sommers. The caution came out on lap 93 when Haver spun in turn two and then again on lap 95 when Brent Edmunds spun in the wall top for turns three and four. Johnson hung on to take his second win on the tour this season. Sommers, Van Der Geest, Riley Stenjem, and John Beale rounded out the top five. Kody King, Cody Dempster, Penn Sauter, Ty Fredrickson, and Clay Curts were sixth through tenth.

Next up at Hawkeye Downs is the Tuesday Night Titans program sponsored by Legends Direct on Tuesday, July 15th. Hot Laps at 6:30p, Racing to Follow. Then it's a return to the Advance Auto Parts NASCAR Weekly Racing Series on Friday, July 18th. NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace will be on hand to race a Sport Mod on the pavement. Big 8 Series Late Models making their visit to the track. Hobby Stocks, Legends, Sportsman, and HD Dawgs round out the card. Big 8 Series qualifying at 5:45pm, hot laps at 6:40pm, and racing to follow.

Another Double Dip with the Tuesday Night Titans on July 22nd and a Weekly Racing Night on July 25th. Then a Special Wednesday Night Race on July 30th because of NASCAR Race Weekend at Iowa Speedway August 2nd and 3rd allowing some of the Hawkeye Downs cars to be on display. They wrap up weekly racing on August 25th and then in September and October the 1/4 mile will be covered in dirt and have some Dirt at the Downs races, part of the 100th Anniversary Season.

Kemna Auto Night Thrills the Crowd at Sports Park Raceway

With my normal Friday night race track, Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway, taking Friday night off because it was the 4th of July, that meant my schedule was free to go somewhere else. After thinking about my choices of Figure 8 racing in What Cheer, Sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge, or CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, I settle on heading to Fort Dodge for racing and fireworks.

I rolled in to Jeff Frevert's Palace of Speed, Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Sports Park Raceway, around 5:30p for Kemna Auto Night at the races. Half-price admission to the grandstands, plus fans were treated to a firework show after the races.

Seventy-one cars signed in to tame the half-mile dirt oval. Jeff Frevert and the track prep team did an amazing job with the track; it was very racy all night. The final checkered flag was waved at 10:25p, and fireworks started around 10:35p and wrapped up around 11p.

It was a great night. It was also nice to meet up with some familiar faces like Braxton Flattery; it was nice to chat with him briefly after the drivers meeting. Your announcing is amazing. Another familiar face was Rodney Tomlinson, who is one of the announcers in Marshalltown on race nights where I flag. It was fun, so now let's get back to talking about the racing that happened.

The first feature of the night was the Matt's Tire Service USRA Tuners 10-lap feature. Braxton Wallace outwrestled David Kimmel for the race lead early. Wallace and Kimmel ran one and two the entire distance, with Wallace capturing the feature win in the caution-free event. Kimmel was second, and Dale Gatton, Charles Prime, and Danielle Lenz rounded out the top five.

In the Dillion Tree Service Vintage Series 10-lap feature, Todd Jansonius led from start to finish in the caution-free feature event. Rex Jansonius took second away from Brent McClendon on lap seven. Brent McClendon was third, and Josh McClendon finished fourth.

The initial start was called back in the Culver's of Fort Dodge and Carroll 4.6L Crown Vics 10-lapper. They went three wide on the following restart, and Andy Williams led the first lap. Tyler Crimmins took the top spot away on lap two. Crimmins lead was short-lived, as Nick Hogan took the lead away on lap four. Then the caution flags waved on lap six, three times in total for spins in turn two. Nick Hogan held off Nate Hogan on the restart to capture his third feature win at Sports Park. Nate Hogan finished second, Crimmins took third, Mike Layne finished fourth, and Larry Dupuy finished fifth.

Only four United Plant Services USRA Modifieds showed up; unfortunately, two of them broke in the heat race, so only two made the call for their 10-lap feature. Lyle Sathoff from Sherburn, Minnesota, jumped out to the lead and never looked back, taking win number two. Robert Bennett finished second.

The Pickett Auto Salvage USRA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature saw a pair of Crimmins, Riley and Jeremy Crimmins, battling for the race lead, while they would go three wide for third behind them. Riley Crimmins led lap one, but Jeremy Crimmins took the race lead on lap two. The first caution came out on lap three; Jonathon Hynes spun in turn two. Jeremy Crimmins continues to lead the way; the next two cautions come out on laps ten and eleven. Jeremy Crimmins continued to lead the way until Jeremy Wegner took it away briefly on lap 14. Jeremy Crimmins regained the lead when Wegner went off the top side; for Crimmins, it was win number three. Bryce Sommerfeld, Riley Crimmins, Branden Schaer, and Andrew Inman rounded out the top five.

Ty Griffith started sixth in the White Transfer & Storage USRA B-Mods 15-lap feature event, but by the end of lap one, he was the leader. "Rockstar" Rocky Caudle snatched up second early. A pair of race cautions on laps three and four for Eric Baker spinning. Griffith pulled away and went on to take the feature win; James Richert got by Caudle for second; Beemer also got by for third; Caudle finished fourth, and Hunter Poston was fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Marsh Concrete USRA Stock Cars 15-lap feature event. They went 4 wide on lap one with Myles Michehl, who started sixth going up on the cushion. Michehl took the top spot and began to pull away. Jason Purvis and Kyle Rose battle for second and third until Kansas City, Kansas' racer Rodney Schweizer reenters the battle. Schweizer took second away. The caution was displayed twice on lap six. Michehl looked to be taking the easy win until Schweizer tried a last-ditch effort on lap 15. Michehl edged out Schweizer to capture the feature win; Schweizer was in second. Rose, Jason Minnehan, and Purvis finished third through fifth.

Racing action was scheduled to continue at Sports Park Raceway on Saturday with the Pickett Auto Salvage USRA Hobby Stock Special; however, Mother Nature had other plans, and speedway officials decided to cancel the July 5th races. The next scheduled racing event is on Saturday, July 19th, for Kids Night. USRA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Mods, Hobby Stocks, and Tuners, along with the Vintage Cars and 4.6 Crown Vics, are on the card. Pits open at 5p, grandstands open at 6p, hot laps at 7p, and racing to follow.

The Iowa ATV and UTV Hare Scramble Series takes over the grounds on July 25-27, and the Dick Marsh Memorial USRA B-Mod Special is on August 9th. The Iowa Moto Series takes to Sports Park for the Fort Dodge motocross on August 23 and 24. XR Stock Car Rampage, $100,000 to win, takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 26 and 27, for the XR Stock Car Rampage, $100,000 to win. The King of the Crown Special for the Crown Vics is on August 30th, and the Season Championships are on September 6th.
