Foxman's Area Basketball Report 1/21/13

So have you been wondering what the Foxman has been up to since there was no thunder dome or marshalltown speedway races since december 1st well i have been attending area basketball games for the high school here in Marshalltown and the Community College here in town as well.

This past Friday Night i headed over to the MHS Roundhouse, just about 5 blocks from my house to watch the Marshalltown Bobcats host the Mason City Mohawks for a doubleheader and then Saturday Night i made the cross town trip to watch the Marshalltown Community College Doubleheader.

Girls Basketball - Marshalltown vs Mason City
First up was the Marshalltown Bobcat girls hosting Class 5A #2 ranked team in the state Mason City Mohawks. The Mohawks would play with out their 2 leading scorers due to injury: Jadda Buckley (Iowa State Recruit) 13.5 ppg and Myah Mellman 11.9 ppg but that didn't stop them from dominating the game and cruising to a 23-10 after the first quarter and a 40-12 at the half. Makenzie Meyer would lead with 17 pts  followed by team mate Allison Scott with 12 pts and Eisha Oden lead the Bobcats with 11 pts at the half.

In the 2nd half, it would be a competitve 2nd half as the Mohawks would only outscore the Bobcats 29-24 as the Mohawks would go on and get their 14th win of the season and 3rd straight since their loss to Class 5A #1 Ankeny last week.

Meyer lead the way for the Mohawks with 27 pts followed by Allison Scott 12, Trisha Nosterman 7, Morgan Vorba 5, Kendall Cornick 4, McKenna Whitehill 4, Lexy Pederson 4, Cortni Rush 2, Rachel Danielson 2, Moli Koehler 2, Nicolle Hewett 0, Mari Wilson 0.

Oden lead the Bobcats with 17 pts, Lauren Mazour 6, Rachel Blagg 5, Amanda Hughes 4, Karli McClure 3, Emily Rebik 1, Lexi Vaughn 0, Jordyn Simbides 0, Ellyn Boland 0, Sam Hughes 0, Molly Major 0, Phoebe Lynk 0, Kali Banks 0, Brenneck Shelby 0, Ali Ashby 0.

The Bobcats went on to play at Class 5A #8 ranked Cedar Rapids Washington and meaning they lost their 2nd straight game to a ranked team in back to back nights, Warriors beat Marshalltown 57-30 on Saturday.

Next up for the Mohawks is a game on Friday Night January 25th meaning they have a week to get their 2 leading scorers healthy and hopefully back in the line up when the play Ames. The Tough Road for the Bobcats continue as they play another ranked team in Class 5A #4 Dowling Catholic at the Roundhouse at 6:15 pm on Tuesday and then make the trip to Fort Dodge on Friday and then play at Class 5A #1 ranked Ankeny a week from Tuesday.

Boys Basketball - Marshalltown vs Mason City
The game officially started at 8:10 pm because of the girls game carrying over late as did the girls jv game before that. The first quarter saw each team trade buckets and ended the first quarter in a 14-14 tie. In the 2nd quarter it was the Mohawks grabbing an advantage heading to half time as they out scored the Bobcats 19-17.  Leading scorers at the half was Jason Kay for the Mohawks with 10 and Blake Gimbel with 13.

In the 2nd half it was the Bobcats grabbing the midway through the 3rd quarter when they outscored the Bobcats 20-14 in the 3rd quarter meanwhile in the 4th quarter both teams struggle to find a way to score as the Bobcats outscored the Mohawks 6-4 in the 4th quarter. Marshalltown would go on to win 57-51.

Mohawks scoring: Kay 19 pts, Andrew Sloan 11, JT Rottinghaus 8, Austin Hemmen 7, Matt Danielson 2, Wyatt Cooper 2, Matt Meyer 2, Brad Petersen 0.

Bobcats scoring: Gimbel 18 pts, Blake Judkins 9, Riley Wirth 7, Tyler Kluver 6, DeQuan McDowell 6, Mason McCarville 6, Austin Kluver 3, Hunter Hillygus 2, Aaron Hauser 0.

Fouled Out: Blake Gimbel; Technical Foul: Gimbel (:36 left 4th quarter)

Next up for the Mohawks is a game on Friday Night January 25th at Ames. The Bobcats will be playing at home against Dowling Catholic on Tuesday before going on the road to Fort Dodge on Friday and Ankeny a week from Tuesday.

Womens Basketball - Southeastern Blackhawks vs Marshalltown Tigers
The Tigers would have their hands full against the Southeastern Blackhawks but the Blackhawks would not be able to find a way to stop former Marshalltown and Ames Prep Star Maddy Van Metre as she would lead the way with 13 pts at the half as the Tigers would have a 31-26 lead going into the break.

In the 2nd half, the Tigers would keep the intensity and expand the lead but then Southeastern would try to find their way back in the game. I found myself looking up at the game clock with 5 minutes to go and thinking this will make or break the tigers as they have played 35 minutes great in a basketball game but fall off the last 5 minutes but they were able to hold on and go on to the win 65-54.

Southeastern Blackhawks scoring: Sheila Kleiber 14, Pearl Paulo 12, Jade Williams 8, Jacey Hartweg 6, Ksenia Sharan 5, Kiara Washington 4, Natalia Merkulova 3, Brittany Ryan 2.

Marshalltown Tigers scoring: Mady Van Metre 23, Mackenzie Gott 18, Ashley Salgado 7, Shantal Tobler 6, Shakeria Slade 6, Lauran Hansen 3, Rusty Henio 2, Shana Lee 0, Latrice McMullen 0.

Next up for the Tigers is their final game of a 3 game home stand as they hosted the Southwestern Spartans (0-5, 0-18) at 5:30 pm on Wednesday. Leading scorer for the Tigers is Mady Van Metre averaging around 12 ppg and Jamee Miner leads the way for Southwestern with an average of 9.9 ppg.

On Saturday, The Tigers will make the 53 minute trek west on Highway 30 to face the 15th ranked Des Moines Area Community College Bears (4-1, 15-4) at 1pm in Boone. The Bears are lead by Carlee Schumacher with 16.7 ppg.

Mens Basketball - Quakerdale Promise Academy Eagles vs Marshalltown Tigers
After the Tigers opened up Conference play with a lost against Northeast Nebraska a week ago Saturday in Overtime 109-105 and the losing Wednesday Night at Southeastern Blackhawks 73-69, the Tigers looked to get back on the winning ways with a game against Quakerdale. Quakerdale had played 3 games before playing the Tigers since Thursday and was playing their 2nd game in 1 day.

The Tigers would defintely not play like Coach Brynjar Brynjarsson would like to be playing things they will defintely have to work on in practice before they get back on the conference trail when they play Iowa Western and Indian Hills this week but anyways in this game the Tigers would have the lead 44-33 at the break. Kenny Battle Jr would lead the way with 16 pts for teh Eagles meanwhile Matej Delinac would lead with 9 pts for the Tigers.

In the 2nd half, the Eagles defintely played like a better team and looked as they were going to make it a game before Marshalltown finally was able to pull away but it didn't appear the Tigers were going to make 100 pts but they would go on to win 101-79 over the Eagles.

Quakerdale Promise Academy Eagles scoring: Kenny Battle Jr. 30 pts, Dante Bailey 19, Daniel Hurtt 12, Thomas Wilder 6, Jason Allen 6, Michael Jenkins 2, Tieron Jackson 2, Brandon Robertson 2.

Marshalltown Tigers scoring: Matej Delinac 29 pts, Chris Caird 18, Troidell Carter 14, Jamyles Coleman 12, Marlon Williams 9, Lamont Adair 6, Rahiem Holloway 5, Kenny Strong 5, Jamal Gatali 3, Cameron Robinson 0, Terrell Clyburn 0.

Technical Fouls: Marshalltown Bench (6:42 left 2nd half)

Tigers look for their first conference win since February 5th, 2011 on Wednesday Night at the #3 Ranked Iowa Western Reivers at 7pm in Council Bluffs at Kanesville Arena. The Reivers are lead by Billydee Williams (13.9 ppg) and Dinjiyl Walker (11.3 ppg). The Tigers are lead by Chris Caird (17.4 ppg) and Matej Delinac (10.9 ppg).

The road doesn't get easier as the Tigers will return home to face against the Indian Hills Warriors at 7pm on Saturday. The Warriors are lead by Jameel McKay (18.4 ppg) and Ronald Ross (13.9 ppg).

All MCC Home games are streamed online at: http://www.ihigh.com/mcc/

It was great to see the Iowa State Cyclones get the win against conference Newcomers this past week against West Virginia and TCU hopefully it continues as they head to Texas Tech on Wednesday and then back home to face Kanas State on Saturday.

The Iowa Hawkeyes tribute to Chris Street was an amazing thing to see and glad the Hawkeyes was able to get the win, The Hawkeyes will head to Ohio State on Tuesday.

Up next for me will most likely be the MCC Women's Basketball game against Southwestern at 5:30 pm as i have been asked to come do the pa announce and the MCC Men's game on Saturday against Indian Hills at 7 pm as i will be working in some kind of capacity.
