Southern Iowa Speedway Stat Cruncher through April and May
Mother Nature has certainly been a head scratcher all year and several weeks looked very questionable at the Southern Iowa Speedway but The Southern Iowa Fairboard, Promoter Mike Van Genderen and Jim Jaennette made it happen every week the weeks they were able to race.
Due to Thunderstorms and Floods the final race of the month of may was cancelled and the sport mod special will be made up Wednesday Night June 26th. As you know the season started with 3 consecutive rain outs back in April (3rd, 10th and 17th) before we ran 5 straight nights.
*Also quick note none of these stats include the Iowa Sportsman Series even though they have raced twice this season at SIS

By Jeremy Fox
Marshalltown, Iowa (May 24th, 2013) – Clear blue skies all afternoon look to a beautiful night of racing but just as racing was rolling on mother nature decided to wreck the plans of getting the night in. All of the qualifying heat races and 2 features with the SportMod feature on the track when the rains came forcing the night to be come to a halt.
John Gill lead the first three laps in the IMCA Sport Compacts feature before Merv Chandler finally got by to take the top spot. Chandler went on to take the win win John Gill in second and Toby Denning in third.
Before one could be completed in the Toby’s K’s Hidaway Mod Lite 15 lap feature, the caution waved when Shon Sanders and Brian Schnell got together. On the restart, it was Tim Hennigar grabbing the early lead but Josh May was coming and caught up to Hennigar. May grabbed the lead on lap 5 and shortly after the yellow waved again but May got a great restart and pulled away to take the win. Chase Flatt got 2nd, Andy Hennigar took 3rd, Charlie Brown was 4th and Tim Hennigar fell back to 5th.

Brinton got a slow restart and began to pull away until the yellow came out on lap 5 for a thirteen car pile up on the front stretch and the same time mother nature decided to drop heavy rain over the race track forcing the races to be called with 5 laps in the books. The race will be resumed with 13 laps to go next friday night.
After the Sport Mods next Friday Night, the Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA Hobby Stocks, Amsoil IMCA Stock Cars and Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds features will be made up and then we will go right in to Minute Man Printing and Evening Optimist Club Night at the Races.

Diercks Wins Again at the Southern Iowa Speedway on Supreme Lawn and Lanscape Night
For Immediate Release:
Diercks Wins Again at the Southern Iowa Speedway on Supreme Lawn and Landscape Night
By Jeremy Fox
Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 22th, 2013) – Another Wednesday Night with very questionable weather all day and night. A few hours before race time mother nature dropped a good shower to help with the moisture on the race track but that didn’t prevent the race action from happening on Supreme Lawn and Landscape Night at the Races.
More items were auction off before and during the intermission for Mark Widmar including 2 seater sprint car rides with Tyler Groenendyk. Iowa Speedway’s Craig Armstrong was also in attendance on the night. Also the track crowned the most popular driver as four drivers were in the top 4 and they were Nathan Wood, Dustin Griffiths, Kris Walker and Bobby Greene.
Spencer Diercks grabbed the lead early and never looked back to take the win in the KBOE Radio IMCA Late Models 20 lap feature, that went green-to-checkered. Todd Cooney passed Nick Marolf on lap 2 to take the runner up position but couldn’t catch the 16 year old Diercks. Marolf finished 3rd, Darrel DeFrance finish 4th and Kurt Kile was 5th. Next race for the late models at SIS is on Wednesday June 19th.
“Hollywood” Brandon Banks started on the outside row in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modified feature. Banks grabbed the lead early and started to pull away but then caution waved when Steve Pumphrey spun in turn 4. Banks got a great restart and started to pull away and then caution waved again on lap 7 for debris. That caution didn’t faze, Banks as he again got a great restart and started to pull away until the caution waved again on lap 12 when Bill Gibson saw his engine expire. Banks looked to go on to the win but then a caution came out just after the white flag forcing a green-white-checkered finish. On the final restart, Banks slipped up on the exit of turn 4 that allowed Tyler Groenendyk to slip by. Groenendyk went on to take the win over Banks, Bill Davis Jr., Cayden Carter and Todd Hansen.
In the IMCA Sport Compacts feature it was Shawn Cooney leading the first 6 laps before he bobbled and that allowed John Whalen to slip by on lap 7. Cooney bobbled again on lap 9 that knocked him back to fourth. John Whalen took the win his 2nd of the season at SIS. Merv Chandler finished second, Bill Whalen Jr. finished third, Cooney was fourth and Trent Orwig was fifth.
Just as they were completing the first lap in the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feaure the caution waved when Curtis VanDerWal, Chris Larson, Levi Layman and Ben Kates got together on the front stretch. “Speedy Bray” Brayton Carter grabbed the early lead however and appeared to be pulling away but Brett Lowry chased him down. Lowry passed Carter on the last lap to take the win as the yellow flag would fly shortly after the checkered. Carter, Tyler Gross, Tyler Heckart and Eric Flander rounded out the top 5.
Erick Knutsen from Cedar Rapids lead the first 3 laps in the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but he was passed by Dale Porter. Porter looked to be pulling away until the only race caution came out on lap 7 for Derek Hodges and Justin Hook in turn 2. Porter had the racing veteran Bill Bonnett on his back bumper and that is where Bonnett remained the rest of the distance. Bonnett tried several times to get by Porter but it was Porter holding on to take the win. Knutsen finish third, Dustin Griffiths was fourth and Donavon Nunnikhoven was fifth.
In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature it was Brad Pinkerton leading the first 2 laps. Jeff Joldersma got by Pinkerton on lap 3 for the lead, Zack Vanderbeek and Damon Murty got by Pinkerton on lap 4 and 5 respectively. Joldersma held off several challenges from Vanderbeek and Murty to take th win. Vanderbeek finish 2nd with Murty in 3rd. Nathan Wood found his way up to 4th and Jason Cook was 5th.
Next Wednesday Night will be the Vital Men and John’s Tree Service IMCA Sport Mod Special with $750 to win in the and a $250 bonus to drivers that have raced at least once this season at SIS making it a possible $1,000 to win. Also racing will be the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm every Wednesday Night.

Morriss, Benson, Ruter and Griffith Notch First Wins of the Season at the Hamilton County Speedway
Here is the Recap from the Hamilton County Speedway Races courtesy of Track announcer Ryan Bergeson......Thanks Berg!
Morriss, Benson, Ruter, and Griffith Notch First Wins of the Season at the Hamilton County Speedway.
By: Ryan Bergeson
Night number three of the regular racing season was held at the Historic Hamilton County Speedway Saturday Night as members of the local Boy Scout Packs and Troops began the night by presenting our nations colors.
The first feature of the evening was the IMCA Sport Compacts. Dustin Haggard picked up where he left off the week prior and was first to the checkered flag. Adam Strunk eventually moved into the second position. Kalan Guthrie finished third and Danny Sassman Jr. rounded out the top four.
The IMCA Sport Mods were next up on the speedway. Aaron Benson took full advantage of his front row starting spot and took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Several drivers began to make their way to the front of the field as the 24 car starting grid was loaded with talented racers. A restart with two laps to go would put Matt Lettow on the bumper of Benson. As the field of cars came to life, Benson took off and was first to the checkers. Lettow would finish second, Brandon Leeman third, and Rocky Caudle would finish fourth.
The Stock Cars took center stage with Jason Vansickle pacing the field early. Vansickle would lead the first ten laps until he was eventually challenged by Mark Elliott. Elliott rocketed to the top side of the speedway and took the lead with seven laps to go. Steve Meyer worked his way to the front of the field and made the pass on Vansickle and Cody Frerichs to take over second. Elliott would win his second Stock Car feature in a row followed by Steve Meyer, Cody Frerichs, and Travis Prochaska.
The IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next. Jeremy Morriss battled for the lead with Roger Haupt Jr. at the start of the race with Morriss eventually taking over the top spot. As Morriss paced the field, Ty Griffith worked quickly through the field and made his way to the second spot. Griffith would make quick work of Morriss and take the lead at the flag stand. A caution flag would bunch the field and on the restart, Griffith would fall off the pace and havoc was created behind him. When the field was reset after the caution, Morriss found himself up front once again and took full advantage. Morriss picked up the feature win and was followed by Myles Michehl, Craig Graham, and Pat Zimmerman.
The IMCA Modifieds were up next with a good battle up front early. Josh Foster and Ryan Ruter raced wheel to wheel on the first lap with Foster the leader of lap one. Ruter would flex his muscle on the second circuit and raced to the lead on lap two. Foster would settle in the second spot and was able to hold off Brett Meyer for third. It was all Ryan Ruter on this night as he stomped the competition on his way to the feature win. Foster, Meyer, and Scott Williams finished in the top four.
The final race of the night was the IMCA Late Model feature. Ryan Griffith piloted his machine into the lead early in the race and would not look back. Griffith was able to dominate all twenty laps on the way to his first feature win of the season. Craig Jocobs, Al Johnson, and Darrell DeFrance would finish in the top four. After the win, an emotional Ryan Griffith said “this one was for Rusty” referencing the late Rusty Fister who lost his life just over a week ago.

Cold Weather Brings Great Racing to the Hamilton County Speedway.
By: Ryan Bergeson
Race fans and drivers would not let a blustery northern wind and cold temperatures keep them from enjoying another exciting evening at the Hamilton County Speedway. The Hamilton County Speedway opened the 2013 season back on Saturday, April 27 and since that evening, Mother Nature has dealt the Midwest frustrating and unpredictable weather conditions. Despite sporadic weather conditions, the track crew put together a beautiful racing surface this past Saturday night that was smooth and multi-grooved. 84 race teams would brave the chilly weather on Saturday night and put on an action packed night of racing for the diehards in the grandstand.
The qualifying heat races went quickly and race fans were treated to car rides during intermission. When the IMCA Sport Compacts came out to compete, it was Dustin Haggard pacing the field. Haggard was able to hold off a late race charge by Adam Strunk and was first to the checkered flag. Haggard was the winner followed by Strunk, Kalan Guthrie, and Danny Sassman
The Stock Car division would be next up on the raceway with a great field of cars taking the green flag. Jason Vansickel and Terry Cornielson raced for the lead on the first lap as they were chased by Ryan Leeman. Several different drivers were able to take advantage of the tremendous racing surface and made their way to the front of the field and as the laps clicked off the board, Mark Elliott found himself out front. Steve Meyer would follow the Terminator to the second spot but Elliott would prove to be too tough to tame on this night. Mark Elliott was first to the checkers followed by Steve Meyer who started thirteenth. Jason Minnehan was able to move from a fifth row starting spot and finish third. Gary Bass would pilot his hot rod from an eighth row starting spot to finish in the top four.
The Casady Brothers Implement IMCA Hobby Stocks would take center stage. Myles Michehl would take the lead on the first circuit as he was challenged by Eric Larson, Justin Nehring, and Jeremy Morriss. Randy Embrey quickly stormed to the front of the field and would make the pass quickly on Michehl. Cody Nielson, Nehring, Cory Roe, and Matt Mundt were locked in a tight battle for third as Embrey raced to the checkers. Embrey would be the feature winner followed by Michehl, Nielson, and Nehring.
The George White Chevrolet IMCA Modifieds took over the speedway next. Brett Meyer would rocket to the lead on the first circuit until he was challenged by Devin Havlik. Havlik would work the top groove and Meyer was on the bottom side as Greg Elliott worked right behind the top two cars. Ryan Ruter raced to the top four and looked to have things dialed in until he and Greg Elliott came together in turn three. On the restart, Mark Elliott made a move in turn four that would spring board him to the top spot. Mark Elliott and Richie Gustin raced side by side through each turn but Elliott was too strong and did the high side boogie to pick up the feature win. Gustin finished second, Greg Elliott finished third, and Scott Olson finished fourth.
The Conleys Trucking IMCA Sportmod feature winner was not determined until the final trip by the flag stand. Andy Tiernan took the lead early and led several laps as many hard chargers were brought in tow behind him. Rocky Caudle worked through the field and snared the lead from Tiernan as Vandenberg flexed his muscle from the sixth row and worked to the second spot. Vandenberg and Caudle raced wheel to wheel the final four laps and the race would go down to the wire. Caudle was able to get a huge run on the back stretch and powered his machine to the bottom of the speedway through turns three and four as Vandenberg went to the topside. At the flag stand, it was Vandenberg the winner by less than a half car length. Rocky Caudle, Andy Tiernan, and Matt Lettow rounded out the top four.
The final race of the night was the Motor Inn of Webster City IMCA Late Models . Darrel DeFrance wasted no time making the pass for the lead over Craig Jacobs and DeFrance dominated all twenty circuits on the way to the feature win. Craig Jacobs finished second, Jason Hahne third, and Curt Schroeder rounded out the top four.
Another night of action packed racing is considered history and next Saturday will be another historic night. For news and information, please check the Hamilton County Speedway Website at www.hamiltoncospeedway.com. Next Saturday night, the Hamilton County Speedway will spring back into action with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing to follow. Drivers will be competing for the honor of the Hamilton County Speedway Most Popular Driver. Drivers will be handing out $2.00 off coupons for the fans to get into the races for a reduced price on May 18. Fans may use the coupon to save $2.00 and also vote for their favorite driver at the speedway.
