Anderson Takes Extra Money on RBF Electric Night at Marshalltown

Normally Friday Nights, I make a 2 hour trip up north to work the Hancock County Speedway Races however Mother Nature had different plans as Britt received a lot of rain late Thursday Night and Early Friday Morning leaving the grounds extremely wet. Friday Night was suppose to be the Pritchard Auto Stores 100, that has now been rescheduled for Friday August 18th plus the debut of the Outlaw Mini Mods on the short track in the infield, that will now be next week.

So with Britt not racing, I decided to wait it out to see if Marshalltown was going to go and at 6:30 it appeared nothing was going to happen. I hopped in my car and drove across town and made it just time for hot laps, which I rarely do because usually I am there earlier. It also made it my second visit to the track this week.

Friday Night at Marshalltown was sponsored by RBF Electric from Union, Iowa and the IMCA Hobby Stocks were draw/redraw $400 to win show.

The MADCRA Mod Lites 15 lapper was the first feature of the night. Tanner Gannon led the opening lap before "Dry Slick" Joe Glick took the top spot away on lap two. Glick and the field saw the caution come out on lap five when Joel Huggins spun exiting turn four. Glick led until Mike Morrill worked his way through the pack after starting last because of suffering a flat tire in the heat race. Morrill took the lead away on lap nine but Glick did not give up as he reclaimed the top spot on lap 12. Morrill powered back on lap 13 and led the remaining laps to take the win. Glick settled for runner up finish. Jason Masengarb, Randy Bryan and Travis Stensland rounded out the top five.

IMCA Hobby Stocks was up next for the draw/redraw format $400 to win 15 lap feature event. Eric Knutson and Bryce Sommerfeld led the field to the green, Knutson took advantage by grabbing the early lead. Knutson led until the caution came out on lap four for David Rieks in turn two and Craig Lovig on the front stretch. On the restart, Shannon Anderson showed hs power and took the top spot away. Anderson lead the remaining laps to take the win ahead of "Mean Gene" Eugene Nicklas, who worked his way from 10th place. Dylan Nelson finished third, Leah Wroten was fourth and Matt Smith was fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature event, the caution came out when Ryan Luedke blew up leaving an oil line in turn one. On the complete restart, Curt Hilmer grabbed the race lead and the the caution came out again on lap two for Justin Becker and Brandon Ostwald in turn four. Hilmer was able to fend off all the challengers until the caution came out on lap three for Becker in turn four collecting Craig Carpenter. The red flag came out on the restart when Thomas Egenberger made contact with race leader Curt Hilmer on the front stretch causing a pile up including Ryan King, Dusty Masolini, Sam Wieben, Chance Titus and Bill Hildreth. After the mess was cleaned up, Adam Shelman inherited the race lead and Shelman led until the caution on lap 13 for Travis Peterson in turn two. Shelman hung out until he spun exiting turn four on lap 15 forcing Jack Housley and Jake McBirnie to spin in turn four. Braaksma made his way from 12th place starting spot all the way to the lead on lap 15. Braaksma went on to take his third win at Marshalltown ahead of Johnathan Logue, Chad Ryerson, Travis Peterson and Travis Storjohann.

The "Class to Tough to Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature saw Kyle Everts lead the first three laps before Jeff Mueller worked his way from seventh to the lead on lap four. Just after Mueller took the lead the caution came out when Doug Russell came to a stop against the front stretch wall just past the flag stand. Mueller continued to lead until lap 10 when the red flag came out because Mueller erupted into flames in turn four. Mueller climbed from the car and the fire was out rather quickly. Damon Murty worked his way from 10th place to take over the top spot. Murty went on to take the win, Todd Reitzler finished second, Trent Murphy was third, Kyle Everts was fourth and Curt Hook was fifth.

Kirby Schultz led the first three laps for the IMCA Late Models feature. Curt Schroeder took the lead way on lap four and then Andy Eckrich took the top spot away on lap seven. The caution came out on lap eight for Jenna Johnson in turn four. Eckrich continued to lead until Todd Cooney worked his way from tenth to take the lead away on lap 12. Cooney led the remaining laps to take the win despite a late race push by Jeremiah Hurst. Hurst was second ahead of Eckrich, Darrel DeFrance and Ben Seemann.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature. Austin Emry led the first nine laps before Tim Ward made the high side work when Emry slipped up just a bit. Joel Rust, reeled down Ward and tried several attempts to get by but Ward was ready and held on to take the win. Ronn Lauritzen ran third, Scott Simatovich was fourth and Emry slipped back to fifth.

Racing continues at Marshalltown, next Friday Night will be Karl Performance / Casey's General Stores Night at the races with all six classes in competition. Hot Laps at 6:55 pm and Racing at 7:30 pm.

For me it will be Boone on Saturday Night, Benton County Speedway in Vinton on Sunday Night and then hopefully back to Britt on Friday Night.

Lights Out Wins for Carter and Eckrich at the Steve Priske Miller Lite 50

Lights Out Wins for Carter and Eckrich at the Steve Priske Miller Lite 50
by Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (June 5th, 2018) - The Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models made their annual appearance on Tuesday Night at the Marshalltown Speedway for Steve Priske Memorial "Miller Lite 50" sponsored by H&F Distributing. Steve was a promoter at the Marshalltown Speedway back in the 1980's and was a major part on bringing the late models to Marshalltown, even owned Rumours Bar & Grille in Marshalltown but unfortunately we lost him in December 2017. It made since to name race in his honor, long time sponsor H&F Distributing and its owner Dean Fogarty agreed.

It was a great night of racing at the Marshalltown Speedway on Tuesday that included 29 IMCA Late Models, 32 Modifieds, 18 Mod Lites and 11 Dirt Trucks making the total car count of ninety cars checked in. The racing was so good it knocked out the lights, well actually there was a power outage at the race track forcing a slight delay.

First feature of the night was the Stars Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. "Dry Slick" Joe Glick led wire-to-wire and not even late race lap traffic would deny Glick the win. Randy Bryan tried to chase down Glick but was never able to challenge and came across the line in second. RJ Gonzales making the trip from Illinois finished third. Travis Stensland and Jason Masengarb was fourth and fifth.

The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks made their first appearance of the season to the Marshalltown Speedway in 2018. In their 15 lap feature event, Steve "Action" Jackson and Lou Siplot Jr. led the field to the green with Jackson grabbing the lead. Jackson and Pat Graham battled it out for the lead. Graham took the top spot away on lap three but Jackson came back to take the lead back on lap five. Jackson and Graham continued to battle it out for the top spot until the caution came out on lap 13 for Jeff Frevert sitting in turn two. Jackson saw Graham sneak by on the restart and then Jackson slid off the top of turn two. Graham went on to take the win ahead of Rick Clark, Myles Michehl, Siplot and Justin Schroeder.

Up next the Wehrs Machine & Racing Products "Dash at the Clash" Qualifer / Fast Shaft All-Star Invitiational Qualifer $2,000 to win IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature event. Veteran Racer Kelly Shryock and Hunter Marriott led the field to the green but before the race could get a single lap completed the caution came out for Tony Cox in turn four. After the complete restart, Shryock grabbed the race lead but that was short as Hunter Marriott took the lead away on lap three. The second race caution came out on lap six for Chris Simpson in turn two. Marriott remained out front but now Shryock and "Gasman" Cayden Carter where in the mix for the top spot. On lap ten, the race was haulted because the track lights went out forcing a 20 minute delay. Marriott held on to the top spot until the caution came out for the final time on lap 15 for Brad Diercks and Tony Cox in turn two. On the final restart, Carter showed his strength as he grabbed the top spot away from Marriott and went on to take the win. 11th place starter Ricky Thornton Jr. finished second, 12th place starter Richie Gustin Jr. finished third. Marriott fell back to fourth and Joel Rust finished fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Deery Brothers Summer Series "Miller Lite 50" for the IMCA Late Models. Curt Martin was lucky to get the pole position with Matt Ryan starting on the outside. Martin led the first two laps before Andy Eckrich took the top spot away on lap three. On lap eight, Darrel DeFrance spun in turn four after contact with Joe Zrostlik bringing out the first yellow. The next yellow came out on lap 10 for Matt Ryan in turn two and then again on lap 11 for Chad Coyne sitting on the back stretch. The final caution came out for Jeremiah Hurst and Cayden Carter getting together on the front-stretch. Eckrich pulled away but when lap traffic got heavy that allowed Justin Kay to get within a few car lengths but Eckrich was not denied the win. Points Leader Justin Kay started 12th manage to finish second. Todd Cooney moved up four spots to finish third, Jeff Aikey ran fourth and Denny Eckrich was fifth. Zrostlik was sixth and DeFrance worked his way back up for seventh.

Racing returns to Marshalltown on Friday with IMCA Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and MADCRA Mod Lites. The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks next race scheduled is this Saturday at the Boone Speedway and the Deery Brothers Summer Series next race scheduled is Thursday June 28th during the Benton County Fair in Vinton.
