Fantastic Night of Racing During the Safelite Auto Glass Showdown at Motown

The Regular Season ended at Marshalltown Speedway but the 2019 season was not over and as many drivers get prepared for the Speedway Motors IMCA Super Nationals at the Boone Speedway, some swing into Marshalltown for the Safelite Auto Glass Showdown at MoTown.

Fans did not leave disappointed as there was exciting and fantastic racing all night including some of the finishes. IMCA Modifieds ran for $1,000 to win meanwhile IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Sport Mods were $500 to win. IMCA Hobby Stocks $300 to win were on the card as was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks and Brooklyn Raceway Cruisers.

First feature of the night was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks 15 lap feature. Myles Michehl jumped out to the early race lead with Jeff Johnson on his tail the first half of the race. Johnson spun in turn four on lap eight to bring out the only race caution. Michehl was not fazed as he led from start to finish to take the win, this was Michehl 8th win in the trucks and clinched the championship. Jeff Frevert ran second the rest of the way. Johnson worked his way back through to finish third. Bryan Spangler and Del Enos rounded out the top five.

Jeff Ware grabbed the race lead in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event passing Blake Henry, Scott Ellis and Aaron Rudolph on lap one to take the lead away. Ware and the field saw the caution came out on lap three for Andy Peck spinning in turn four, Preston Merical made contact as he had no where to go. Ware now had Tyler Ollendieck on his back bumper but held on to the race lead. The caution again came out on lap nine for Brian Stevens and Jeremiah Andrews getting together in turn four. Ware, Ollendieck and Eric Stanton battled it out for the race lead until on lap 11, Ollendieck spins on the front stretch sliding through infield billboards. Ware and Stanton battled for the race lead with Ware holding on until the final set of corners. Ware spun in the turn three but kept going but it allowed Stanton just enough time to take over the lead and the win. Rudolph and Bill Bonnett got by Ware for second and third. Ware finished fourth and Henry was fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature, the caution came out when Dustin Dreesman and Dennis Stewart got together in turn one. Brayton Carter led the first lap before Jenae Gustin took the lead away on lap two. Gustin and Carter battled it out until a caution came out on lap ten for Stewart coming to a stop in turn one. Gustin held off any more challenges from Carter to take the win ahead of Carter, Tyler Soppe, Jason Hall and Nebraska's Brian Osantwoski.

Up next was the Brooklyn Raceway Cruiser Cars 15 lap feature. Austin Schuring / Ray Hill took the early lead but just after a lap was scored the red flag came out when Tristen Larue/Lane Larue went off the top of turn three. Schuring/Hill continued to lead until lap six when suddling their machine lost power allowing Jacob Lehman/Laverne Lehman to take over the top spot. Lehman/Lehman led until lap 11 when Carsen Carpenter / Chad Rigby took the lead away. Carpenter / Rigsby went on to take the win ahad of Lehman/Lehman, Chris Mitchell/Shelbie West, Leroy Kline/Bruce Kline and Zach Leach/Josh Albertson.

The IMCA Stock Cars lived up to their name as the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" in their 20 lap feature event. Todd Reitzler grabbed the early race lead despite Angel Munoz and Wayne Dotson battling behind him. On lap four, Munoz and Dotson got together in turn four sending Munoz around to bring out the caution and Dotson to the tail for questionable driving. Reitzler got a great restart and pulled away and appeared to be heading on to the easy win until the caution came out on lap 16 for Jesse Sobbing coming to a stop on back stretch. On the restart, the red flag came out when Roger Ciesielski went off the top side of turn one. Reitzler knew Elijah Zevenbergen and Damon Murty was on his back bumper and began to battle it out until Murty experienced troubles on lap 18. Murty came to a stop in turn two. Reitzler fended off a pair of haymakers from Zevenbergen to go on to take the win. Zevenbergen finished second ahead of Track Champion Steve Meyer, Jeff Wollam and Curt Hook.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Modifieds feature event. Cayden Carter led the first eight laps before a caution came out for Todd Shute sliding off the top side of turn two. Joel Rust made the right move on the restart and wrestled the lead away from Carter. Rust got a little separation between him Carter as they began to catch heavy lap traffic. The caution came out on lap 23 for Jarrett Franzen and Austin Paul getting together in turn one. Rust was not fazed as we went on to take the win putting him on the 2020 FastShaft All-Star Invitational ballot. Carter, sixteenth place starter Jeff Aikey, Cody Laney and Kelly Shryock rounded out the top five.

Larry Wollam Memorial Season Championship Night at Motown

Friday Night marked the ending of track points as Marshalltown Speedway that meant it was the North 3rd Avenue Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Memorial Season Championship Night. This night was once again a special night as it remembered a great man who raced, owned and promoter at the Speedway before he passed away on August 30th, 1999. Before the race got started Jeff and Tyler Wollam came out in the familiar 3W race car as many of the family, friends and crew members stood on the front stretch in a great tribute in memory of 20 years since Larry passed including former drivers who drove for Larry.

I may have never gotten to know Larry personally but one thing I know he is smiling down every night on his son Jeff on the race track, even the bad nights. I have become great friends with the entire Wollam Racing Team over the years and you could say I am their unofficial stat keeper, its always touching to hang out with them in the pits every race night because they have been supporters of me and my passion for racing.

Larry always lived by his view of Life and they honestly couldn't be any more spoken words.

THE LARRY WOLLAM VIEW OF LIFE--

If you think you're beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch that you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
For out in the world we find -
Success begins with a fellow's will,
It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you're outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself,
Before you can win the prize.

Life's battles don't always go,
To the strongest or fastest man.
But sooner or later the person who wins,
Is the person who thinks he can.

Eighty-Nine Cars signed in to race on the high banks of Marshalltown including nine North Iowa Vintage Club. Mike Morrill, Jacob Floyd, Jake McBirnie, Steve Meyer and Joel Rust were all feature winners. Morrill, Leah Wroten, McBirnie, Meyer and Tim Ward were all crown track champions. Top Ten in points in all classes were automatically locked in with all other cars including new cars racing their way into their starting spots for the features.

First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 15 lap feature event and it was "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins grabbing the early race lead with Mike Morrill in tow. Huggins began to work lap traffic and that allowed Morrill to think about making a move for the top spot. Morrill did exactly that as he took the lead away coming to the white flag putting Huggins back to second. Morrill went on to take his sixth win of the season and the track championship. Huggins finished second on the track and second in points by 4 pts. Randy Bryan was third, Joe Glick was fourth and Charlie Brown was fifth.

Jake McBirnie took advantage of being the Points leader by starting on the front row in the 18 lap IMCA Sport Mods feature event. McBirnie wrestled the lead away from Austin Schrage on the start and cruised on his third win in Motown. Austin Kaplan got by Schrage six laps to go and Kaplan held on to take second. Schrage finished third, Jenae Gustin and Travis Peterson was fourth and fifth respectively.  McBirnie nabbed the 2019 track championship by 12 pts over Peterson.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, it was Track Champion Leah Wroten leading the first 11 laps despite having the pesky Rookie Kaden Reynolds following right in her tire tracks. The caution came out on lap 11 when racing veteran Bill Bonnett blew up and caught fire going down the front stretch before coming to a stop in turn two. Wroten and Reynold battled it out for the race lead but it looked as if Wroten was going to take the win but on lap 13, Reynolds tried to make a move for the race lead but was unsuccessful. Reynolds again tried and took the top spot away going into turn three on the final lap but Wroten made contact spinning Reynolds out in turn three. Wroten came across the line to the checkers at the same time the yellow came out, Wroten was penalized for questionable driving and Reynolds was the caution so that gave the win to Jacob Floyd, who ran third the entire distance. Gary Pfantz was second, Jamie Coady came across the line in third was disqualifed in post race tech inspection for chip infraction so that handed the third spot over to Ben Newhouse. Jeremiah Andrews and Scott Ellis rounded out the top five. Wroten clinched the track champion by simply taking the green flag.

What can you say about the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature, other than they truly are the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" and it was no different on this night. Steve Meyer and Todd Reitlzer battled it out early in the feature event with Meyer leading lap one. A caution came out just after the completion of lap one when Michael Peterson hit the front stretch wall and coming to a stop. Reitzler took the lead away from Meyer on the restart but the caution came out on lap seven when third place runner Dallon Murty spun in turn two. Reitzler continued to lead even when the caution came out on lap ten for Damon Murty sliding off the top side of turn three. The caution came out a lap later on lap 11 when Curt Hook came to a stop on the top side of turn one. Meyer got by Reitzler on lap 12 and shortly after Reitzler spun in the bottom side of turn two. Meyer held on to take his third win of the season ahead of hard charging Damon Murty. Jeff Wollam finished third on a night remembering his dad. Dave Atcher was fourth and Dallon Murty came back to finish fifth. Meyer took the track championship, his first since his 2012 Stock Car Track Championship.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Joel Rust jumped out to the race lead and managed to lead all 20 laps fending off challenges from Tim Ward early in the feature the went caution free. Rust took win number seven of the year in Motown. Ward finished second, Ronn Lauritzen was third, Sam Wieben was fourth and Jared Van Deest was fifth. Ward held on to win the track championship by 3 pts over Rust.

North Iowa Vintage Club made a special appearance to the Marshalltown Speedway and it the end of its 12 lap feature event, it was Ray Guss Jr from Illinois taking the win in a 1975 Chevy Nova owned by Keith Simmons. Guss took the lead on lap three and never looked back.

Full Moon and Thrilling Racing on Speed Shift TV Night at Marshalltown

Two tracks I have had the opportunity to work at the last three years wrapped up their season last weekend so it meant my schedule was open once again and since I hardly ever stay home during racing season I needed to find somewhere to go watch racing. The decision was made to make the trip across town to the Marshalltown Speedway for Speed Shift TV Night.

One Hundred Eighteen cars signed in to tame the high banked quarter mile facility at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds. The racing action was hot, heavy and wild all night long where the Full Moon made it presence known. IMCA Northern Sport Mods ran for a top prize of $1,000 and the winner was Johnathon Logue. Joel Rust and Kaden Reynolds win again in the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Hobby Stocks respectively. Damon Murty (IMCA Stock Cars), Randy Bryan (Mod Lites) and Russ Olson (600cc Micro Mods) were also victorious.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap MADCRA Mod Lites feature event. Cory Sonner started on the pole when Charlie Brown opted to the tail on the start and he took advantage by leading the opening lap. Before another lap was scored in the books, Jacob George spun in turn two. On the restart the red flag came out when Mike Morrill flipped once in turn four meanwhile Doug Byers and Terry Brown spun in turn four. Randy Bryan wrestled the lead away on lap two, only to see the final caution come out when Brett Warrick spinning in turn two. Bryan went on to take his first win in Motown despite a hard charging Joel Huggins. Huggins started eighth and chased Bryan but could never take the lead away. Terry Brown worked his way back to finished third, Tanner Gannon was fourth and Charlie Brown was fifth.

IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature saw Scott Ellis grapped the early race lead from Travis Merical but on lap two the red flag came out. The red flag was for William Klosterman because he nose dived and got hung up in the catch fence near the catwalk in turn four  after making contact with Gary Pfantz. Thankfully Klosterman along with everybody else was okay and after a lengthy clean up racing action resumed. Scott Ellis continued to lead until Kaden Reynolds worked his way from tenth to take the lead away on lap seven. Reynolds and the field saw the caution come out on lap ten for Jamie Coady in turn two. Reynolds held on to take his third win in Motown but Leah Wroten had caught him late, she just could not find away around Reynolds. Tyler Ollendieck started twelfth but managed a third place finish. Merical and Ben Newhouse finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Tony Olson and Johnathon Logue found themselves on the front row of the 20 lap IMCA Sport Mods $1,000 to win draw / redraw feature event. Olson and Logue battled it out for the race lead the entire distance with Olson grabbing the race lead. The caution came out on lap eight for Jake Sachau and Kyle Olson on the back stretch, then on lap nine for Garrett Nelson in turn four. Olson still maintained the top spot holding off Logue on the restarts but when the red flag came out on lap 15 for another car getting on his side after making contact with Hunter Longnecker in turn two. Olson kept the upperhand with Logue and Jenae Gustin on his back bumper. Olson slid up a bit too high on lap 17 opening up the door for Logue to take the top spot away. Monday Racing Thoughts from Foxman

Here is some Monday Racing Thoughts from Foxman:

Sunday Night saw an end to the rein of Promoter Mick Trier at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton. After 20 years of promoting races unter JJAM Racing, it was time for Mick to call it quits. If you loved him or hated him, Mick did an amazing job with promoting several races including the Iowa State Fair Speedway, Warren County Speedway, Stuart Speedway and Benton County Speedway during that time. I have had the honor and pleasure of helping him out over the years from helping check drivers in, draw, line up duties, score, announce and work a corner. You honestly can't find another guy like him to work for so before you say all he did was take drivers money and run.....then you don't know Mick. I learned so much from Mick and I appreciated all the support he has given to me over the years. Enjoy the Retirement Mick! Don Burkey did a great job over the years on the track prep, enjoy the retirement with the refrigerator full of beer.

Benton County Speedway will have a new promoter.....Specialty Racing Promotions (Corey and Rick Dripps). Their first race will be on Saturday September 28th with the Dirt Knights Tour IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Compacts and Micro Mods. Hot Laps at 6pm, Racing to Follow.

Meanwhile 4 Wide Promotions is leaving the Hancock County Speedway after three years of promoting as they turned in their notice to the Hancock County District Fair board. It was difficult decision for them but with ever so changes in life, it became very difficult to continue on despite having a great team behind them. I had honor of being one of the first people they offered a job too back in the summer of 2016 when they officially signed the contract to take over because of my experience and when ISF Speedway closed after the 2016 season, it meant I could accept and begin working for them. Most of the time, I was behind the microphone announcing races with Chad Meyer but i filled in on Raceceiver, worked a Corner, Help in the pit shack, help With Driver Check In...among many different things I did. If they asked they knew I was not afraid to help do anything. Thanks Brian King, Josh Omans, Kyle Roose and Doug "Doc" Sande for bring me on to be a part of the team, wish all you guys the best. John Pletcher thanks for all your hard work getting the track in shape, Darlene Weber helping with getting trophies every night, Alissa Graven for keeping the whole team together every night.

I have rumors that there is a few more tracks in Iowa that maybe opening up at the end of the 2019 racing season but we will see what happens. Time will tell what opens up and what 2020 plans will be for race tracks.

Now for all you internet warriors that think every track picks favorites well you are wrong. If you think its so easy to be a track official then get off your tailbone and put down the keyboard.......contact a race track promoter, ask them if they have position available. After working at a race track the last ten years, I have a little more respect for the people that have to make calls on a split second decision at other race tracks.

Also if you want to talk trash about track officials or a promoter than go say it to their face instead of hiding behind your screen or behind their backs....grow a pair of balls until then all you are doing is killing racing.

I will always continue to say positive things about Racing and hope to continue to coverage this sport for many more years to come... See you at the races, Foxman!

Bunch, Pickett and Klosterman Take First Wins at Boone Speedway

Saturday was set to mark the end of the 25th season at the Hancock County Speedway with the Bob Shryock Memorial Night of All-Stars sponsored by Lake Mills Motorsports and Bayer Crop Science however mother nature had other plans as nearly 3/4 inch of rain fell in the morning forcing to cancellation. This also meant the track would now have to find a new promoter to take over as 4 Wide Promotions turned in their notice ending their time as promoters.

After driving home unloading all my stuff after Nights of Stars Weekend, I made the decision to head over to the Boone Speedway for the Sport Compact Super Nationals Tune Up and Cruiser Car Tag Team Championships.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event. Kaytee Devries has dominated in Northwest Iowa and it was no surprise to see her in commend early on Saturday Night. Devries led comfortably until the caution came out on lap five when Korey Lana blew up and Spun on the backstretch. Devries led until lap eight when Mitchell Bunch was able to wrestle the lead away. Bunch went on to take the Super National Tune Up Win ahead of Devries, Devin Jones, Riley Paysen and Jay Devries.

Jeff Stensland led all 15 laps of the My Race Pass Mod Lites feature event with his son Travis Stensland running second. Terry Brown finished third, Mike Kennedy was fourth and Bryan Zehm was fifth in the feature that went caution free.

In the Elmquist Towing IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18 lap feature, Bryan Johnson grabbed the lead but Dusty Masolini did not go away and he wrestled the lead away on lap three. Shortly after the caution came out when Tommy Hensley spun in turn three. Masolini held the top spot until a caution came out on lap seven for Dustin Lynch, Bill Wears, Tony Olson and Hunter Longnecker in turn two. On the restart, Masolini had Johnathon Logue and Jake McBirnie on his back bumper with McBirnie grabbing the lead away. McBirnie went on to take the win with only a caution on lap 13 for Billy Dyer in turn two slowing him down late. Logue, Cory Pestotnik, Doug Smith and Masolini round out the top five. Hensley won the Elmquist Towing Dash for Cash.

The Snap-On Tools IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature was next. Austin Kuehl grabbed the lead early from his outside front row starting spot but was chased by Jimmy Gustin, Jeremy Mills and Tim Ward. The first caution came out on lap six when Eric Elliott slid off the top side of turn three. Kuehl continued to lead until Tim Ward decided to go to the topside. Ward took the lead away on lap 13 and set sail only to see the caution come out on lap 14 for Robert Avery in turn two. Ward got a great restart and never looked back going on to take his second feature win of the year in Boone. Gustin, Mills, Kuehl and Joel Rust was second through fifth respectively.

Tyler Pickett took the lead away on lap five from Jesse Smith in the Arnold Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event. Pickett went on to take his first win of the season despite a caution on lap nine for Robert Stofer in turn three. Bryan Snell challenged Pickett several times but settled for second. Devin Smith finished third, Todd Reitzler was fourth and Jesse Smith was fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, the caution came out for David Wright and Nick Foster in turn two. Shane Butler led the opening lap before William Klosterman took the lead away on lap two. Klosterman and the field saw the caution come out on lap three for Bryce Sommerfeld in turn one and Caden Lowmiller in turn four.  Klosterman was able to fend off the field on the restart to go on and take his first win. Curt Reed, Shaun Wirtz, Eric Knutson and Aaron Rudolph rounded out the top five.

Donny Mason and Carl Agan continued their winning ways in the 2 Man Cruisers to take home the Tag Team Trophy Belts by grabbing the lead away on lap three of ten.

Boone Speedway continues next Saturday Night with Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Mod Lites. Hot Laps at 6:15pm, Racing to Follow.

Josh Appel and Jared Boumeester rounded out the top five.

Randy Brands looked like he was going to take the win in the 20 lap Quick Performance IMCA Stock Car feature until he slipped up leaving the door open for Kelly Shryock. Shryock took the lead away on lap 15 from Brands. The only caution came out on lap 17 for Chanse Hollatz in turn four. Shryock went on to take the win over Brands, Heath Tulp, Parker Slagle and Derek Green.

Dotson held off Mike Mullen and Ricky Thornton on the restart but the caution came out again on lap eight for Nick Meyer in turn three. Dotson was only slowed one more time on lap 17 when Kyle Brown stopped in turn two. Dotson led until the halfway pit stop. Berry was second, Mike Mullen was third, Cayden Carter and Thornton was fourth and fifth at halfway. Thornton Pockets $4,500 at Night of 1,000 Stars in Britt

Thursday Night at the Hancock County Speedway was the 25th Annual Night of 1,000 Stars sponsored by IMT Transport. Night of 1,000 Stars was created in 1995 and originally scheduled to run at the Boone Speedway before mother nature forced it to be moved to Britt. After moved to Britt, the USMTS was scheduled to have a race down at the Hamilton County Speedway on the same nights but fell victim so drivers made the trip to Home of the Hobo Convention and the Hancock County Speedway was on the Map.

The track became an idea in 1994 when the Wright County Speedway just south of Belmond was forced to close and held its first race on June 30th, 1995. This season marked the 25th Anniversary season and 3rd season under the helm of 4 Wide Promotions.

One Hundred Thirty One Cars signed in for Night one of  Stars Weekend at the Hancock County Speedway including 56 IMCA Modifieds, 28 IMCA Sport Mods, 29 IMCA Stock Cars and 16 IMCA Hobby Stocks. Ricky Thornton Jr, Brayton Carter, Derek Green and Cody Nielsen among winners.

First feature of the night was the House Motorsports IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature event. Colby Fett jumped out to the early race lead but he knew that Brayton Carter was going to make his way up to battle for the race lead. Fett held on to a comfortable lead until a caution came out on lap 10 for Autum Anderson sitting in turn four. On the restart, Fett had to contend with Jared Boumeester, Kansas Hot Shoe Dakota Sproul, Sport Mod Nationals Champion Johnathon Logue and Brayton Carter. Fett held off all initial challenges until Carter made the move and took the top spot away on lap 13. Carter out dueled Fett for the second time this week to take the win. Fett finished second, Boumeester was third, Sproul was fourth and Jake McBirnie took fifth away from Logue.

Matt Speckman led the first fourteen laps of the Quick Performance IMCA Stock Car 20 lap feeature event before Derek Green was able to wrestle the lead away. Green and the field saw the caution come out on lap 18 for Kyle Rose in turn two. Green was determined to not be denied as he held on the final two laps to take the win. Speckman, Kelly Shryock, Chad Palmer and Justin Temeyer rounded out the top five.

In the MPM Marketing IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, James Burns led the opening lap before Cody Nielsen took the top spot away. Nielsen saw a pair of cautions on lap three, first for Ben Peterson in turn four and then on the restart for Connor Smith in turn two. Nielsen held on to take the win over his Brother Brandon Nielsen. Drew Barglof finished third, Burns was fourth and Zac Smith was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 50 lap IMT Transport Night of 1,000 Stars IMCA Modifieds feature event. Six heats, Three B-Features and Provisionals determined the 30 car 3 wide starting lineup. There would be a 10 minute pit stop on lap 25. Benji LaCrosse from Green Bay, Wisconisn grabbed the early lead but just after one lap was scored the caution came out for Kollin Hibdon in turn four. LaCrosse held off Ethan Dotson and Ricky Thronton Jr on the restart but they again saw the yellow come out on lap four for David Brown in turn one. LaCrosse was looking good but Thornton did not go away as he was able to take the top spot away on lap 20. Two laps later on lap 22, the caution came out when Richie Gustin came to a stop in turn four. Thornton led the final three laps before the pit stop to pick up the $1,000 Halfway Leader Bonus. Thornton, LaCrosse, Dotson, Jake O'Neil and Tom Berry Jr was first through fifth at Halfway. Cayden Carter, Cody Laney, Kyle Brown, Jeff Larson and Tim Ward rounded out the top ten.

Thornton wondered at halfway if fuel issues were going to resurface but the answer was no as he led the entire second half of the race, that went caution free. This was Thornton's second win during the Nights of Stars Weekend at the Hancock County Speedway as he won last years Night of 10,000 Stars. Tom Berry Jr came across the line in second for the third night in a row. LaCrosse finished third, Dotson was fourth and O'Neil was fifth. Carter, Kyle Brown, Laney, Nick Meyer and Mike Mullen rounded out the top ten.

Nights of Stars was set to continue on Friday Night with the Night 10,000 Stars sponsored by Corteva Agriscence, Asmus Farm Supply and Pioneer Seeds. Then on Saturday Night with Bob Shryock Memorial Night of All-Stars sponsored by Lake Mills Motorsports and Bayer Crop Science.

Arneson and Carter Take Nail Bitters at the Harris Clash

Last year the Harris Clash moved to the Deer Creek Speedway in between Spring Valley, Minnesota and Grand Meadows, Minnesota but I was unable to attend because the very next day I was heading to the Hancock County Speedway for Nights of Stars Weekend that had a Wednesday Night practice.

This year however with no practice night before the Nights of Stars meaning I had one day to get ready before heading up early on Thursday, it meant if I could make it work the trip to Deer Creek would happen. After talking to some friends and finding out they were heading up to watch it again, they invited me to tag along and we made the 3 hr trip from Marshalltown. Another reason it was priority for me to make the trip up to the Deer Creek Speedway, yesterday marked the one year passing of a great friend Tim Stevens and he had always told me I need to make the trip up to the 3/8 mile. Thanks Michael Duffy and Kyle Kirk for leading the Foxman tag along, it was a fun road trip up and back home in which we arrived back around 3 am just over 12 hours after we left Marshalltown.

What can I say about the Deer Creek Speedway, it is one top notch facility and the Queensland Family, owners of the facility, are amazing people and if it was closer you can bet I would go more often because I had fun making my first ever visit to the race track.  It was also nice to finally hear the legendary voice of Deer Creek Announcer Todd Narveson as he worked alongside my tag team partner Chad Meyer.

Racing action was amazing all night long with both 28th Annual Harris Clash presented by TraLo Companies coming down to the checkered flag but heats and b features did not disappoint this fan. The racing was well worth the Twenty dollars to sit in the grandstands and watch at Deer Creek. One Hundred Fourty Four cars signed in to the pit area including 92 IMCA Modifieds and 52 IMCA Northern Sport Mods to see if they would be crown Harris Clash Champions. The 2019 Manufacturer Cup Champion is VanderBuilt Race Cars.

IMCA Northern Sport Mods had eight heats with top two going to the A Main, 4 b-features with top two going to the A Main to set the field at 24 cars. IMCA Modifieds ran 12 heats with only the winner to the A Main, 6 b-features with top two from each going to the A Main and the top non-qualifer in the Race of Champions Race would received the past champion provisional.

In the IMCA Modifieds Race of Champions Race, it paid $1,000 to win and $100 to start. Highest finishing driver not already qualifed for the Harris Clash A Main would be awarded the Champions's provisional. Driver must have a current IMCA Modified License, Sport Mod Champions that have moved up were eligible and drives would randomly draw their starting spot. Richie Gustin (2010 & 2017 HC Champion) and Kelly Shryock (1993 & 1997 HC Champion) drew the front row for the 12 lap race but the initial start was called back by Race Director Justin Queensland. On the restart, Gustin jumped out to the race lead and went on to take the win.  Last Year's Harris Clash Winner Cayden Carter finished second, Shryock finished third, Joel Rust finished fourth and Ethan Dotson was fifth. Jesse Sobbing , Jacob Murray, Mark Noble, Chris Abelson, Jared Van Deest and Jeremie Hedrick rounded out the field.

Brayton Carter jumped out to the early race lead of the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 25 Lap Harris Clash A Main. Just after the completion of lap one the only race caution came out when Jared Boumeester came to a stop in turn three after he made heavy contact with the wall in turn two. Carter held off Logan Anderson and Colby Fett on the restart and pulled away. Fett was able to reel back down Carter and showed his nose several times with Carter hanging on to the race lead. Lap traffic started to get heavy in front of the leadrs and Fett knew he needed to make a move to take the top spot away. Carter bobbled in turn four allowing Fett to race him to the checkers with both unsure if they had won or not until Carter was told he won by .019 secs at the line over Fett. Anderson ran third the entire distance. Zach Nitsch from Delia, Kansas finished fourth ahead of Carter VanDenBerg. Jim Chisholm finished sixth and was the Hard Charger moving up 12 spots from eighteenth.  Thirteenth place starter Doug Smith, twelfth place starter Dakota Sproul, seventeenth place starter Jason Bass and Daniel Fellows rounded out the top ten.

Final race of the night was the 30 lap Harris Clash A Main for the IMCA Modifieds. Tom Berry Jr and Joe Duvall led the field to the green flag with Duvall grabbing the lead, Berry saw Cayden Carter also get by him on the start. Carter took the lead away from Duvall on lap three. Carter held off challenges from Duvall and Berry to hang on to the race until the caution came out on lap 13 when Stacey Mills spun collecting Jeff Aikey and Mike Mullen in turn two. Carter had to deal with Berry, Duvall, Austin Arneson and Richie Gustin on the restart and initial he held them off until Berry made a move to take the top spot away momentarily on lap 18. Carter refused to go away and tried to make move in turn one but Arneson was also trying to make move to get by both and he did exactly that. Arneson took the race lead away on lap 19 and it appeared Arneson would take the easy win but lap traffic got heavy in the late stages allowing Berry to reel him back in. Berry tried to pull a slider on Arneson but Anreson was ready as he crossed over and took the win. Berry finished second, Cayden Carter finished third, sixteenth place starter Jake O'Neil finished fourth and Ricky Thronton Jr finished fifth. Thirteenth place starter Richie Gustin, fifteenth place starter Mike Mullen, Brad Diercks, eighteenth place starter Ethan Dotson and twenty second place starter Corey Dripps rounded out the top ten. O'Neil and Dripps were the Hard Charges as each moved up 12 spots. Shryock was the past champion provisional.

Great Job by Bob Harris and his team from Bob Harris Enterprises, Queensland Family (Randy, Ryan, Susan, Justin & Cole) and IMCA for putting a fantastic night of racing. Todd Narveson and Chad Meyer did a great job behind the microphone all night and if you want to catch the replay of entire night, than get a monthly or yearly subscription to IMCATV because Bucky, Barry and the entire team do an amazing job as well.

After a Wednesday Night off,  I will be off to the Hancock County Speedway for the Nights of Stars Weekend. It gets underway with the 25th Annual IMT Transport Night of 1000 Stars on Thursday. Friday features the Corteva Agriscence, Asmus Farm Supply and Pioneer Seeds Night of 10,000 Stars with the Lake Mills Motorsports and Bayer Crop Science Bob Shryock Memorial Night of All-Stars. IMCA Modifieds however can stay in the State of 10,000 Lakes and race at the Fairmont Racewy for the Bob Shyrock Memorial featuring the IMCA Dirt Knights Tour.
