Simpson Captures the Bill Rice Memorial Victory in Webster City

After the Hamilton County Speedway decided to shorten up their schedule because of low car counts this season and the earlier originally scheduled SLMR show getting rescheduled, the decision was to try and make at least one more trip to Webster City on Saturday night. I did just that and was definitely not disappointed, as Brad Ratcliff and Todd Staley produced a fantastic racing surface. A total of ninety-one cars signed in, and the final checkered flag was waived at 11:20 p.m.

Saturday night was the Bill Rice Memorial, featuring the East and West Series of the Super Late Model Racing Series, along with the season championship night for track points in all weekly divisions. The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks were originally scheduled to race at Sports Park Raceway, but after working with Webster City, the trucks moved 22 miles east as the Fort Dodge track moved their season championship night to September 14th.

The first feature of the night was the A1 Automotive USRA Tuners ten-lap feature event. Dalton Fels led the opening lap over Harrison Horn and Charles Prime. They would battle it out three wide on lap two for the race lead, with Prime leading at the line. Prime held the top spot until Horn took the lead on lap four. With Horn leading, Tyler Crimmins worked his way to second and began to apply pressure to the back bumper of Horn. Crimmins took several attempts at trying to get by Horn, but Horn held strong until the final lap. Crimmins made the last lap pass exiting turn two to take his second win of the season in Webster City and cap off his 2024 track championship. Horn, Prime, Fels, and T.J. Williams rounded out the top five.

Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks was next on the speedway for their scheduled 15-lap feature event. Rick Clark took the top spot on lap one, but shortly after the lap was complete, the caution came out when Todd Grafton spun in turns three and four, collecting up Jared Myers, Jeff Johnson, Mason Mitchell, and Shonn Mapes. After a lengthy clean-up, the feature was shortened to a 12-lap feature. Clark continued to lead until lap three, when they went 3 wide for the top spot. Tyler Inman took the race lead away, but even his lead was short-lived as Myles Michehl took the top spot on lap six. Michehl appeared to be heading on to the win, but Inman had other ideas as he began to pressure for the lead. Inman regained the lead and went on to take his sixth truck series win this season. Michehl finished second, Clark fell back to third, Brandon Toftee was fourth, and Sports Park Raceway Promotor Jeff Frevert finished fifth.

Tanner Green won the four-wide battle for the race to lead the first lap of the USRA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature event. Shortly after the caution came out, Jacob Monson spun in turn four. Jeremy Crimmins took the top spot away on the following restart and held off Green to take his fifth win of the season in Webster City. Green finished second, "Dilly Bar Special" Daniel Ayers was third, Shane Monson was in fourth, and Bryce Sommerfeld was in fifth. Sommerfeld claimed the 2024 track championship.

"The Terminator" Mark Elliott grabbed the top spot early in the Olsen Family USRA Modifieds 16-lap feature event and pulled away to a large lead over Lyle Sathoff, who was running second. The only race caution came out on lap 12 when Sathoff came to a stop on the top side of turn four. Mark Elliott held off Ben Nading and Dennis Elliott on the restart to capture his first win of the season in only his second night out in 2024. Dennis Elliott finished second, Nading was third, Christopher Elliott finished fourth, and Michael Grantham was fifth. Nading captured the 2024 track championship.

Bill Crimmins grabbed the top spot early in the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars 16-lap feature event, fending off Myles Michehl. The caution came out shortly after lap one was scored when Jeff Lyon spun in turn three after a trailing arm broke. Crimmins held off Jason Minnehan and Michehl on the restart, but the caution came out again on lap four when Jeremy Ades spun on the bottom side of turn four. Crimmins and Michehl battled on this restart, and it would be Michehl edging out Crimmins at the line until the caution came out for Connor Ubben in turn two. Michehl held off and pulled away from the rest of the field, going on to take his fourth feature win by a full straight-away. Minnehan, Todd Staley, Parker Slagle, and Justin Ades rounded out the top five. Michehl took the 2024 track championship over Crimmins.

Next up was the Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mods 16-lap feature event. Bryer McCoy led the first lap. USRA B-Mods National Point Leader Ty Griffith worked his way from seventh to the race lead on lap two. Two laps later, the caution came out when Jeff Larson came to a stop on the front stretch, and a lap later, on lap five, Klay Beemer spun in turn three, collecting Kamdyn Haggard. Griffith got a great restart and never looked back, going on to take his sixth win of the season to polish off his 2024 track championship.

The final feature of the night was the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) Series 35-lap feature event. Hometown favorite "Hollywood" Jason Hahne took the top spot early, fending off CJ Horn, Tad Pospisil, Charlie McKenna, and Chad Holladay. Hahne pulled away, looking strong, until the middle portion had a trio of cautions. The caution came out on lap 13 for Charlie McKenna in turn two. Hahne held off Pospisil and Jake Neal on the restart, looking determined to not be denied. The cautions came out again on lap 17 for McKenna off the pace in turn four and then again on the restart when "The Woodpecker" Chris Spieker and Kyle Berck got together in turn two. MLRA Late Model Points Leader Chad Simpson moved up to second by this point and took the lead away from Hahne on the restart. Simpson never looked back, going on to take the feature win, his fifth of his career in the SLMR. Neal finished second in the Al Humphrey Hot Rod, Hahne fell back to third, Pospisil was fourth, and Holladay was in fifth.

The next race at the Karl Chevrolet Buick GMC Hamilton County Speedway is the Annual Fall Futurity on Friday and Saturday, October 18th and 19th. Thanks to track announcer Bryan Denekas and SLMR series announcer Anthony Ainslie for the shout-out last night; I appreciated it a lot. I know next time to not be a stranger and come over and say hey, but thank you for the shout-out. I also took pictures during hot laps and heat races, and they are posted on the Trackside Report by Foxman Facebook page in a photo album called Hamilton County Bill Rice Memorial - SLMR East vs West 8/24/24.

Carter, Masengarb, Meyer, Brill, Gardner, and Knutson Take North 3rd Ave. Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championship Victories

It was a picture-perfect August Friday night to wrap up the regular season at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway with the Annual North 3rd Avenue Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championship Night. The final night is in honor of Larry Wollam, who passed away in 1999, giving back all of his contributions to the speedway, and Larry lived by a saying.

THE LARRY WOLLAM VIEW OF LIFE--

If you think you're beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch that you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will,
It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you're outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself,
Before you can win the prize.

Life's battles don't always go,
To the strongest or fastest man.
But sooner or later the person who wins,
Is the person who thinks he can.

The racing action was hot and heavy all night. They went two, three and four wide a few times through the night and could go top or bottom on the racing surface. One hundred-five cars signed into tame the high banked quarter mile.

A little twist to season championship night was that instead of lining straight up by points like what usually happens, the points leader going into the night after driver introductions would draw a chip. There was a 4, 6, or 8 chip, meaning the top 4, 6, or 8 in points would be inverted, but there was also the wildcard chip that said field, which would mean the whole field would be inverted, and if it was pulled, there would be extra laps. There were also Powder Puff Races added to the end of the night, and with that all said and done, the final checkered flag was waived at 11:31 p.m.

The historic North 3rd Avenue Dairy Queen is one of the first 100 DQ stores ever built in the USA and has been a Marshalltown icon since 1947! They have all your hot eats and cool treats, so stop and see the great DQ team at 711 North 3rd Ave. in Marshalltown.

The first feature of the night was the Rugged Radio IMCA Friesen Performance Northern Sport Mods 22-lap feature event. Brayton Carter, the points leader, had the pleasure of drawing the chip, and he drew the entire field invert. Ryan Leeman inherited the pole after the invert because Boe Jenkins opted to stay at the back. Leeman grabbed the race lead, fending off Colton Livezey and Josalyn Elmquist. The only caution came out on lap 3 when Will Wolf had his right rear come off on the front stretch after hard contact in the right rear. Carter worked his way through the field and took the top spot on lap five. Carter never looked back, going on to claim his fifth win in Motown and take the 2024 track championship. Leeman finished second, Colton Livezey came home third, Keith Simmons was fourth, and Hunter Clement was in fifth.

Next up was the Knight Sanitation IMCA STARS Mod Lites, originally scheduled for 15 laps but increased to 23 laps. Jon Padilla, the points leader, decided instead of drawing a chip, he wanted to do a complete field invert, and Josh May then said if Padilla could win, he would give an extra $200. A pair of Colchester, Illinois, racers, Michael Mann and Mike Pershing, battled for the top spot. Mann led lap one; Pershing took the lead away on lap two and held on to it until lap five, when Jason Masengarb took it away. Masengarb pulled away from the field and built up a full straight-away lead as Jon Padilla and Josh May worked their way through the field. The caution came out on lap 15 for debris in turn four, forcing the field to bunch up. Masengarb held off Padilla and May, who had worked into second and third. Ben George and Tracen Glick got together in turn four to bring out another caution on lap 16. Masengarb held off Padilla and May again, but they refused to go away as Padilla took the top spot on lap 18. Masengarb regained the lead on lap 20, and a lap later, the final caution came out for Alex Eischeid in turn two. Masengarb held on to take third of the season. Padilla finished second and clinched the track championship. May was third, Mike Morrow was fourth, and Cory Sonner was fifth.

Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars took to the track for their 20-lap feature event. Jimmy Gustin had the pleasure of drawing a chip after a bit of controversy over the field chip falling out. The 6 chip was drawn. Todd Reitlzer and Steve Meyer inherited the front row, with Meyer grabbing the top spot early. Reitzler fell back to fourth as Scott Rice and Gustin got by. The first caution came out on lap four when Reitzler went for the slider in turn four, making contact with Rice, resulting in heavy contact with the guard rail in turn four. Reitzler was sent to the pits for rough driving. Meyer held off Gustin and Michael Jaennette on the restart, but the caution came out again two laps later on lap six for Tom Cannon in turn four after assistance from Maguire DeJong. Meyer held off Gustin and Jaennette again and fended off any challenge from those two. The final caution came out on lap 18 for Dillon Solum blowing up in turn three and coming to a stop at the top of turn four. Meyer flexed his muscles one more time and took his second win of the season. Gustin finished second and took the 2024 track championship, his first in a stock car. Jaennette, seventeenth-place starter Paul Stone, and Damon Murty rounded out the top five.

In the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Friesen Performance Modifieds feature event, points leader Tripp Gaylord drew the field chip, so six laps were added, making the feature a 26-lap feature event. Kyle Brown inherited the pole, but before a single lap was completed, the caution came out when Robert Moore and Scott Simatovich got together in turn two. Brown got off to a great start on the restart, as Cody Brill ran second. Brown looked to be heading on to the win but experienced mechanical issues on lap 16, resulting in him exiting to the pits. Brill took over the lead as Austin Kuehl and Tripp Gaylord battled directly behind him for second. Brill claimed the twin checkers, his first IMCA win of the season. Gaylord took second, Kuehl finished third, Kaylin Lopez was fourth, and David Brown was in fifth.

Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature rolled on to the speedway, and points leader Cristian Grady drew the number 8 chip. Corwyn Whisler and Mark Smith led the field to the green flag, with Whisler taking the top spot. The caution came out on lap one when Bryce Bartel spun in turns three and four. Whisler led until Michael Gardner worked his way through the field. Gardner took the top spot away on lap three and never looked back, going on to take his second feature win in Motown. Cristian Grady worked his way up to finish second and claim the 2024 track championship. Whisler, David Kimmel, and Smith rounded out the top five.

The final regular feature of the night was the Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 16-lap feature event. Points leader Calvin Dhondt drew the number 4 chip. Before a single lap was scored, the caution came out when Derrick McNeece's driveshaft came out, catapulting him into a tumble in turn three. McNeece climbed out on his own power. Eric Knutson out-wrestled Solomon Bennett for the race lead. The caution came out one more time for Aidan Lamasters and Kolbin Sabin in turn four. Knutson fended off Bennett, Dhondt, and Bradly Graham all through the race. Knutson went on to claim his third feature win of the season. Graham took second, Bennett was third, Sam West was fourth, and Dhondt came home fifth. Dhondt was your 2024 track champion.

After all the feature events were completed, it was time for the powder puff races. The first one was the modified and sport mods; Kathryn Jenkins won taking the sport mods as well. Natlie Barber, driving a Mod Lite led from start-to-finish in the Mod Lites and Sport Compacts, was followed by Nikole Kimmel, top sport compact. Rylea Kriegel, driving a stock car, led all six laps of the stock cars and Hobby Stocks powder puff as Addy Stevens took the Hobby Stocks.

No racing next Friday at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway; racing returns on Friday, August 30th, for the Karl Auto Group Showdown at Motown. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA Mod Lites, IMCA Sport Compacts, and Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks all take to the high banks. Full details and an event flyer will be posted on the Marshalltown Speedway Facebook page and website.

Then remember, no racing in September, but don't forget to mark your calendars for October 24th–26th for the Harvest Hustle on the High Banks Fall Special.

Inman, Nielsen, and Padilla pocket $1,000 to win on Vessco Inc., RBF Electric, and BHE Night in Motown

It was a crispy, cool August night at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night for Vessco Inc., RBF Electric, and BHE Night at the races. The racing was hot and heavy all night long, with a lot of two-, three-, and sometimes four-wide racing.

Ninety-six cars checked in to tame the high banks on Friday night. $1,000 to win in the IMCA Mod Lites, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and IMCA Sport Mods. The final checkered flag was waived at 10:03 p.m.

Vessco, Inc. serves the municipal and industrial water treatment markets in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska. RBF Electric is a fully licensed electrician based out of Union, Iowa. You can call them at (641) 858-6281. BHE (Bob Harris Enterprises) is built on a foundation of pride, innovation, and integrity within the racing world. You can give BHE a call at (515) 292-9200.

The first feature of the night was the IMCA Friesen Performance Northern SportMods, presented by Rugged Radios, a 16-lap feature event. Tyler Inman jumped out to the immediate lead from outside the front-row starting spot. Cory Van Zante and Brayton Carter ran second and third, as Will Wolf and Kyle Olson battled for fifth. The caution came out on lap 12 for Zander Keeland in turn one. Inman held off Carter and Van Zante on the restart. Inman went on to take the feature win and the $1,000 prize, thanks to BHE. Carter finished second, Van Zante was third, Olson took fourth, and Colton Livezey came home in fifth.

IMCA STARS Mod Lite 15-lap feature, presented by Knight Sanitation, was up next. "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins grabs the early race lead, holding off Silva, Illinois racer Jon Padilla. Padilla, however, got by Huggins on lap four when Huggins slipped up. Padilla then started to pull away as Huggins battled with Josh May. The first caution came out on lap seven for Cody Heck spinning in turns three and four right in front of the leaders. Padilla again got a great restart and pulled away, but the caution came out again on lap 13 for Tracen Glick spinning in turn one. Padilla held on to the lead for the final two laps to claim his third win of the season, worth a prize of $1,000, thanks to Vessco Inc. Huggins came home second, tenth-place starter Bryan Zehm was in third, May was in fourth, and twelfth-place starter Ben George was in fifth.

In the IMCA Stock Car 20-lap feature, presented by Drury Automotive, Scott Rice grabbed the early race lead. Rice held off Michael Jaennette early and even after the caution on lap two when Austin Schrage and Steve Meyer went off the top in turn two. Rice held everybody and looked to be heading for the feature win, but Jaennette refused to go away. Jaennette took the top spot away on lap 15 from Rice and fended off challenges from Rice until the checkers. It was Jaennette's first win this season in Motown. Rice, Meyer, points leader Jimmy Gustin, and Schrage rounded out the top five.

Scott Simatovich led the first lap of the IMCA Friesen Performance Modifieds, presented by Tire Demon by Love Tap, and went 20 laps in their feature event. The caution came out shortly after lap one was scored in the books when Robert Moore spun in turn three. Simatovich slipped up on the restart exiting turn two, "The Game Changer" Dallon Murty too took the race lead away; Tripp Gaylord took second away from Simatovich on lap three. Gaylord then began to battle Murty for the race lead, and he managed to take it away on lap five. Gaylord led, but Murty refused to go away. Murty pulled a slider on Gaylord to take the top spot back on lap 17. Gaylord returned to the favor and took the lead back on lap 18, squeezing Murty in the front stretch wall. Gaylord took the feature win, and Murty finished second. Zack Rawlins took third, David Brown was fourth, and thirteenth-place starter Ryan Gillmore was fifth.

Fifteen-lap IMCA Sport Compacts, presented by Hy-Vee of Marshalltown, were next up on the speedway. Jeremy Williams led the first lap but slipped up, allowing Michael Gardner to take the top spot away, and he was trailed by Cristian Grady. Grady then applied pressure to Gardner, but Gardner fended them off before pulling away. Grady was left to fend off several challenges until the only race caution came out on lap ten. Williams and Ryan Brant got together on the front stretch, resulting in Williams making heavy contact with the front stretch wall. Kaiden Gosselink suffered some damage in the caution; Katelynn Watts nearly avoided that. Gardner held off Grady initially but slipped up on lap 12, allowing Grady to take the top spot away briefly. Gardner was able to come back and make slight contact with Grady to regain the lead. Gardner went on to claim his first IMCA win, ahead of Grady, Watts, Corwyn Whisler, and David Kimmel.

The final feature of the night was the 16-lap feature for the IMCA Hobby Stocks, presented by Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center. The initial start was waived off, but when the racing action got started, it was Solomon Bennett grabbing the race lead, just like he did last week. Bennett held off Calvin Dhondt and Tucker Richardson. The caution came out on lap two for an infield tire getting kicked out onto the track in turn four. Bennett held them off again on the restart, but the caution came out on lap four when Sam West was spun by Kale Hemsley in turn two. Bennett remained strong and led until Brandon Nielsen took the race lead on lap 12. Nielsen, in town for a wedding on Saturday, decided to bring the race car, which was well worth it as he captured the $1,000 top prize, courtesy of RBF Electric, and the feature win. Bennett finished runner-up again, Dhondt finished third, Richardson was fourth, and eleventh-place starter Eric Knutson was fifth.

Next Friday, August 16th, is the North 3rd Ave. Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championship Night. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA Mod Lites, and IMCA Sport Compacts wrap up their 2024 track points. Gustin Family Affair in Victory Lane on EMW Trucking Military Memorial Night in Motown

Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway did not disappoint, as fans in attendance and watching at home were left clinging on to the edge of their seats on EMW Trucking Military Memorial Night. There were plenty of two- and three-wide races throughout the night, and sometimes I tried four-wide. All that great racing action led to some exciting finishes. A total of one hundred-four cars signed in to tame the high-banked quarter mile, with the final checkered flag waiving at 9:55 p.m.

Thanks to EMW Trucking, the military veterans were able to get free access to the races. They even had some Iowa Army National Guard soldiers come out and present the nation's colors and sing the National Anthem. EMW Trucking Military Memorial was originally supposed to be Memorial Day Weekend, but Mother Nature did not play nice then, so it was rescheduled.

EMW Trucking LLC is a trucking company based out of DeSoto, Missouri. They cover cargo and freight trucking needs, so give them a call at 636-209-3170 or check them out on Facebook. They have trucking terminals in Clearwater, Minnesota; San Francisco, California; and Starke, Florida, as well.

The first feature of the night was the Rugged Radios IMCA Friesen Performance Northern Sport Mods 16-lap feature event. Kyle Olson out-wrestled Chris Burke and Jake Sachau for the race lead early. Burke will grab second before exiting on lap seven. Sachau was second but now received pressure from Jenae Gustin and Brayton Carter until a caution came out on lap 15 for Sierra Rose Gary spun in turn two, forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Gustin took the lead away from Olson on the restart and went on to take her second win in as many weeks. Olson finished second, thirteenth-place starter Will Wolf came home in third, Carter fell back to fourth, and twelfth-place starter Zander Keeland was fifth.

Jon Padilla from Silvis, Illinois, grabbed the top spot from the drop of the green flag in the Knight Sanitation IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature. Padilla pulled away from the rest of the field to go on and take his second win of the season, while the battle behind him heated up for second on back. Fellow Illinois racer Jason Masengarb from Colona finished second. Ben George was able to out-duel Josh May for third. May took fourth, and Alex Eischeid took fifth.

Up next was the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" Drury Automotive & Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event. Jerry Gifford took the early lead, fending off Dave Atcher and Steve Meyer. Gifford pulled away as Jimmy Gustin, Austin Kaplan, and Kaden Reynolds worked their way through the field. The only caution came out when Reynolds spun Kaplan in turn four. Reynolds received the black flag for rough driving, and Kaplan exited a lap later with a flat tire and heavy front-end damage. Gifford held off Gustin and Meyer on the restart and appeared to be heading on to his first win in Motown, but Gustin had a different idea. Gustin made the last lap pass and out-dueled Gifford to the finish line to claim his first win in the Stock Car. Gifford, fourteenth-place starter Maguire DeJong, Meyer, and sixteenth-place starter Michael Jaennette rounded out the top five.

In the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Friesen Performance Modifieds 20-lap feature event, Cody Laney took the early lead after out-wrestling Johnathon Logue. Laney led until the first caution on lap 11, when Rod Clement came to a stop in turn three. Tom Berry Jr. took the top spot away on the restart from Laney and pulled away. The red flag came out on lap 15 when Trevor Fitz flipped off the top of turn four. Fitz climbed out okay. Berry fended off Dylan Thornton and Laney on the restart. Two more cautions came out on lap 18 when Todd Shute slid off the top of turns one and two, and on lap 19 when David Brown spun in turn one. Berry held off all challenges on the restart to capture the win. Thornton finished second, Tripp Gaylord was third, Laney was fourth, and thirteenth-place starter Tim Ward was fifth.

Mitchell Bunch took the early lead in the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature event, but just after 1 lap was completed, Henry Dieleman came to a stop at the top of turn one. Bunch led until he lost power on lap nine, giving the lead over to Cristian Grady, who was running second the entire distance to that point. Grady went on to take his fourth win in Motown this season. Spencer Roggentien finished second, David Kimmel was third, James Haring was fourth, and eleventh-place starter Mark Smith was fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 16-lap feature event. Solomon Bennett took the top spot, fending off Calvin Dhondt, but short after lap one was scored, the caution came out when Braden Gifford spun on the front stretch. Bennett got a great restart and fended off Dustin Filloon, Dhondt, and Eric Knutson, but the caution came out on lap 3 when Sam West hit the traffic cones exiting turn three. Bennett remained strong out front and held the lead through the cautions on lap seven for Aidan Lamasters in turn two and lap eight for Derrick McNeece on the front stretch. Bennett fended off challenges from Knutson and Dhondt and appeared to be heading on to take the feature win. Bennett got slowed up by a lap car exiting turn two, allowing Dhondt and Knutson to use the high side to get by. They were able to manage the next lap car exiting turn four, and Dhondt went on to take his fifth win of the season. Bennett was able to edge out Knutson for second. Knutson, Bradly Graham, and Filloon rounded out the top five.
