Mother Nature Wins Marshalltown, Gustin Wins Boone

Well the story of the weekend at the Marshalltown Speedway was mother nature takening the win and the payouts. As we were looking forward to the Kruse Family Night at the Races but mother nature would win and continue to rain and force the cancellation of night number 3 of the season. So since Marshalltown rained out we will talk about the points standings after 2 nights.

In the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds, Jon Snyder is the point leader with 76 points. Vern Jackson is in 2nd place just 2 points back, Scott Simatovich is 8 points back in 3rd, Josh Truman is 9 points back in 4th and Richie Gustin is 12 points back in 5th.

In the Aarons IMCA Stock Cars, the top 5 are all separated by 6 points or less. Dustin Smith is leading with 78 points, Trent Murphy is in 2nd just 2 back, Steve Meyer is in 3rd 3 points back, Damon Murty is 4th 5 points back and Michael Jaennette is 5th 6 points back.

In the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods, the point leader is Eric Elliott with 76 points. Second through fifth is Scott Davis 3 behind Eliott, Brad Iverson is 10 behind, Austin Lucas is 11 behind and Chad Louk is 12 behind.

In the Junction Bar & Grille IMCA Hobby Stocks, Dustin Elliott has the lead by one point over Devin Smith. Michael Murphy is 3 points behind Elliott, Nic Shearer is 7 points back and Eric Stanton is 9 points back.

In the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites, Last years points champion is back on top and leading the points standings. Mike Morrill leads over Eric Hendrickson by 2 points, Tim Hennigar and Dusty Masolini by 5 points and James May by 6 points.
Next Friday Night will be Haverhill Social Club Night at the Races with Pits Opening at 5:15, Grandstands at 5:30, Hot Laps at 6:45, Racing at 7:30.

So with Marshalltown raining out on Friday i decided i would make the venture over to "Iowa's Action Track" the Boone Speedway on Saturday night for some racing action. Despite mother nature looking like she would win the Boone Speedway was able to race as did the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City and Algona Raceway but for me it was off to the Boone Speedway.

The Dwarf Cars were up first for their 12 lap feature in Boone, a total of 20 cars signed in the most of the entire season. Matthew Goodin would take the early race lead but would be passed by Joel Huggins on lap 3 for the lead. Huggins would cruise to the victory in the green to checkered race, James May would take 2nd. The first 2 nights winner Josh May would take home 3rd as Goodin would end up 4th and Mike Kennedy would come home in 5th.

The IMCA Sport Mods was up next for their 18 lap feautre but it would take 4 heats and a b-feature to get the field from 31 cars to just 24 cars for the feature. After all that was settle, Dan Wetzel would take the lead from the pole position and look to be pulling away but then a caution would come out on lap 2 when Jared timmerman and Brandon Morris would get together in turns 1 and 2. Wetzel would lead them back to green with Tim Love and Jerry Hinton on his back bumper. Wetzel would continue to lead but another caution would come out on lap 12 after Eric Elliott made heavy contact with the back straightaway wall before coming to a stop in turn 3. Wetzel, Scott Davis, Love, Hinton and Brett Moffitt was the top 5 on the restart. Wetzel, Davis and Love would begin to battle for the top 3 spots, Wetzel would continue to lead the race but would be passed by Davis on lap 16, Davis would go on and take the win. Tim Love would take 2nd over Wetzel, Cayden Carter would get 4th and Jerry Hinton would take 5th.

Up next is the IMCA Modifieds for their 20 lap feature, 27 cars signed in so all cars would go to the feature. Before 1 lap was completed Kent Croskey would spin out in turn 3 but Richie Gustin would take advantage of his pole postiton on the restart as he would get a good start on Rookie Joel Bushore. Richie Gustin would begin to cruise away but another caution would come out on lap 2 when Russ Dickerson would spin in turn 1 and then another one on lap 4 when Fred Schimmels, Jimmy Gustin, Denny Pittman, Todd Shute and Kyle Krampe getting together in turn 1. Richie Gustin would begin to cruise away this time but then the final race caution would come out on lap 12 when Scott Strauss would spin in turn 4. On the restart tho, Gustin would make sure he would pull away and not let anything prevent him from taking the win. As Gustin took the win, Adam Larson would take 2nd with Bushore in 3rd, Cale Sponsler in 4th and Luke Wanninger in 5th.

IMCA Stock Cars were up next for their 18 lap feature, 28 cars signed in so it took 3 heats and b feature to get the field down to 24 cars. Jerry Gifford would jump out to the early race lead and would again to be cruising away or so he thought as his brother Wayne would catch up to him and make a pass on lap 10 and just after that there was 2 cautions before a lap was completed, the first caution was Brad Dutton making contact with the wall on the backstretch and the second caution was when 7 cars got together in turns 3 & 4 on the restart. Wayne Gifford would cruise to the victory as Jerry Gifford would finish 2nd. Donavon Smith, Dustin Smith and Ty Hill rounded out the top 5.

The final features of the night was for the IMCA Hobby Stocks. In Feature #1, Tyler Pickett would take advantage of his outside front row as he would lead the first 4 laps but would be passed by Cody Gustoff on lap 5. Gustoff would take the win in the green-to-checkered race with Pickett in 2nd. Aaron Rudolph, John Watson and Brandon Pruitt would round out the top 5. In Feature #2, Jesse Hopkins would take the lead but would see a yellow after 1 lap was in the books when Chris Hupp would stop on the front stretch. Hopkins would lead the next 4 laps too but would be passed by Eric Stanton on lap 6 and cruise to the victory. Pat Mather, Tony Cox, Randy Embrey and Hopkins would finish behind Stanton.

Despite a little sprinkle through out the night of racing action the entire night was able to be run with out a problem and came to end at 10:45pm.

See you at the races next week!

The Class "To Tough To Tame" Puts On An Exciting Show At The Marshalltown Speedway

On Friday Night, we saw another great night of racing action at the highbanks of Marshalltown. The track for "What Friday Nights Were Made For" trully lived up to that with vey exciting racing action on this night #2 of the racing season, Elliott Racing Night. The great racing action started right when the green flag flew in heat races. A lot of the heat races had close side by side racing and close finishes. Their was one major incident in the 1st heat of the Dwarf Cars/Mod Lites when Ivan Guerra went off the top 2 hard to bring out the only red flag of the night, he would be okay but not able to continue the rest of the night.

The O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites were up first on the night for their 15 lap feature event. Dave Scandrett and Randy Bryan would lead them to the green but 2nd row inside starter Dusty Masolini would get a good start and be able to pass them and take the lead. Masolini would have 2 cautions be the only thing slowing him, one on lap 3 and another one on lap 12. On the restart of the final caution, he would have Mike Morrill on his back bumper but would be able to hold him off. Masolini would take the win his first ever win at Marshalltown. Mike Morrill would take 2nd and take over the point lead. Eric Hendrickson, Tim Hennigar and Randy Bryan would round on the top 5. There was a Total of 16 Mod Lites signed in.

Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods continue to have very high count, they were up next with their 15 lap feature but it would take 4 heats and 2 b-features to get the field from 38 cars that signed into just 24 cars. Cayden Carter, a regular at the Southern Iowa Speedway in the B-Mod division in a different car but also running weekly at Marshalltown in the Sport Mod division, he would start outside front row and take the lead. Carter and the rest of the field would see the feature be plagued with cautions. The 1st caution came out on lap 2, the next 3 cautions came out on lap 8. On the 1st restart attempt of lap 8 the start was called back, on the 2nd restart attempt of lap 8 was scratched because last week's feature winner Geoff Olson would stop in turn 1. Carter still maintains the lead but would see another caution come out on lap 13 when a driveshaft would be sitting in turn 1, we would alos learn that the time limit had expired but there would be green-white-checkered attempts to finish this race. On the restart, Carter would have Brett Moffitt and Scott Davis on his back bumper. Carter would bobble in turn 2 on the last lap and would follow back to 10th. Moffitt, the Joe Gibbs Racing Developmental Driver, would go on and take the win. Scott Davis would take 2nd, Jake Strayer would get 3rd, New Track Point Leader Eric Eliiott was 4th and Chad Louk from Sioux City was 5th.

Up next would be "The Class To Tough To Tame" the Aaron's IMCA Stock Cars. They would live up to that name for sure in their 18 lap feature. Rick Brown and Clay Deppe, both from Kellogg would pace the field to the green. Deppe would jump out to the early race lead but would see a caution on lap 4 when last weeks feature winner Damon Murty would stop in turn 2. On the restart, Deppe would have Dustin Smith on his back bumper. Deppe would lead until lap 6 when he was passed by Dustin Smith. Brian Irvine would also get by Deppe. Smith and Irvine would begin to do battle. A caution came out on lap 13 when jon Lang went off the top of turn 2. Irvine was the race leader, Smith was 2nd and now add im Trent Murphy in the mix as he was 3rd. Irvine and Smith would be side by side every lap to the finish but on the final lap, Murphy would sneak by both of them on the outside to take the win, Smith was in a very close 2nd and Irivne was in 3rd. After the race fans were defintely thrilled to see that exciting finish. Steve Meyer took 4th and Deppe ended up 5th. Smith takes over the points lead, a total of 19 cars signed in.

After that exciting finish was the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds for their 20 lap feature event. 21 cars signed in so all cars would have the pleasure to start the a main. Mike O'Lear and Adam Larson would lead them to the green, Larson would quickly take the lead while O'Lear settled in 2nd. O'Lear would be passed by 3rd place starter Richie Gustin after a few laps. Gustin would set his sights on catching Larson, he would get a break as a caution would come out on lap 8 when Jimmy Gustin would have something break in the front end forcing him to go off the exit of turn 2. On the restart, Larson would have to deal with Gustin and O'Lear. Larson and Gustin would race side by side , Gustin would take the lead on lap 11 and cruise to the win. Larson would get 2nd, O'Lear would get 3rd, Jon Snyder 4th and Vern Jackson was 5th. Snyder will be the point leader heading into next week.

The final feature of the night would be the Junction Bar & Grille IMCA Hobby Stocks for their 12 lap feature event. It would take 3 heats and a b-feature to get the field down from 29 cars to 24 cars for the feature. In a crazy note only 19 cars made the call for the feature. Nick Murty, started 3rd row inside but by the end of lap 1 he was the leader. The only race caution came out on lap 2 when Matthew Hudespeth would stop on the backstretch. Murty would still maintain the lead but he would have Dustin Elliott on his back bumper. Murty and Elliott would battle for the lead but Murty would hold off and take the win, Elliott would up 2nd. Eric Knutson, Devin Smith and Calvin Dhondt would round out the top 5.

An night in which fans saw 21 total races, 125 race cars sign in and witnessed close finishes. The racing action was completed in just a little over 3 hours and came to and end at 10:37p.

Up next this friday is Kruse Family Night at the races with the pits opening at 5:15, Grandstands at 5:30, Hot Laps at 6:45 and Racing at 7:30. Adults are $9, Seniors are $7, Kids 12 and under $2 and Pit Passes are $20. See you there Friday Night for What Friday Nights Are Made For.

Late Night at Marshalltown for Ryan Ashton Racing Season Opener

This would be a night everybody would remember because people witnessed exciting finishes but would have a long night at the races because the first six heats races, 2 Mod Lites heats and 4 IMCA Sport Mod heats were ran before the speedway had a delay for a power outage at the race track. So while the track officials, Alliant Energy and K&L Electric was working on resuming power and getting temporary lights to the track. The people in the grandstands were entertained by the Announcer Blake Anderson and Promotor Toby Kruse, the kids went on a school bus rides around the track and in the pits.
Once power was resumed racing resumed at about 9:40 after an hour and a half delay where the remaining heats and b-features were run.
The O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites were up first for their 15 Lap feature. 18 Mod Lites signed in to race all made the call for the feature. Before 1 lap would be scored in the books. Todd Grisham would go for a roll in turn 1 and collect Cory Sonner. On the restart, Tim Hennigar, who was to start 3rd but bc of Grisham spinning and rolling, he would inherit the pole position. Hennigar would pull away but another caution on lap 4 when Dusty Masolini and Colby Obermebt would get stuck together on the backstretch. The Top 5 when the field went back to green would be Hennigar, Jimmy may, Josh May, Eric Hendrickson and Mike Morrill. Hennigar would maintain the lead but would do battle with Josh May which got by his dad on the restart and would also have to do battle with Mike Morrill later in the race. Hennigar would lose the lead to Josh May on lap 8 but regained it on lap 10. Morrill would make the pass on both of them to take the lead on lap 13 but would lose it as well. May, Hennigar and Morrill would come 3 wide out of turn 4, May would take the win, his second in six days. Morrill would take 2nd with Hennigar in 3rd, Eric Hendrickson was 4th and Jimmy May in 5th.
Up next was the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods for their 15 lap feature. 41 Sport Mods signed into race so 4 heats and 2 b-features would be used to determine their field. Matt Lettow and Geoff Olson would lead the field to green. Olson would take the lead and the win in the caution-free feature. The only thing slowing Olson was lap traffic late in the race, it would be Olson's 2nd win in 5 days as he won at I-35 Speedway in Mason City. Eric Elliott, Eric Flander, Matt Lettow and Brad Iverson rounded out the top 5.
Aaron's IMCA Stock Cars "The Class To Tough To Tame" would be next for 18 laps. 23 Stock Cars signed in to do battle. Before 1 lap was completed their were 2 cautions, one for Robbie Merkle and Ryan Leeman getting together in turn 1 & 2 and the other one was the restart being called back by the flagman Jerry Vansickel. Once the race got going Tracy Gienger took the race lead, he would lose the lead on lap 5 to Damon Murty. Murty would cruise to the victory despite 2 more cautions on lap 9 and 12 and a late race charge by Dustin Smith. Murty, Smith, Steve Meyer, Michael Jeannette and Trent Murphy would be the top 5 at the finish.
Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds would be up for their 20 lap feature, 27cars signed in to do battle. Just like the Mod Lites and the Stock Cars before 1 lap was completed their was a caution when 4 cars got together in turn 2 and Mike O'Lear on the front stretch. When the racing would get going Luke Wanninger would take the lead, mean while he would have Richie Gustin on his back bumper and those to would begin to do battle for the lead along with dodging lap traffic but on lap 13 with lap traffic 3 wide and those to trying to battle for the lead and trying to get by them at the same time, Wanninger and Gustin got together off turn 4 to bring out the caution, Wanninger would head to the pits with a broken front end and Gustin to the pits for a broken rear end meanwhile this handed the lead over to Scott Simatovich. The only thing that slowed Simatovich was a caution on lap 17 when Kyle Krampe and Jay Schmidt got together. Simatovich would take the win, Jon Snyder took 2nd. Vern Jackson, Jimmy Gustin and Todd Conrad rounded out the top 5.
The final feature of the night was the Junction Bar & Grille IMCA Hobby Stocks for their 12 lap feature. 31 cars signed in so 4 heats and a b-feature would determine the field. Josh Irvine and Nick Murty would start on the front row, Irvine would take the lead and Murty would run in 2nd. Murty would take the lead on lap 5 but when a caution came out on lap 6, he would pull in for some mechanical issues that handed the lead back over to Irvine. Irvine would cruise to the victory with Todd Reitzler in 2nd, Michael Murphy in 3rd, Devin Smith in 4th and Dustin Elliott in 5th.
The nights racing action came to a conclusion at 11:50 pm. Next Friday Night will be Dustin Elliott Racing Night, Pits Open at 5:15, Grandstands at 5:30, Hot Laps at 6:45 and Raicng at 7:30.
Hope to see you at the races for "What Friday Nights Are Made For."

Mother Nature, Gustin and Gustin win the Frostbusters

My racing weekend started like many others and like many weekends in past year because the wather was in doubt but it turned out to be a great weekend for racing action despite losing one of the originally scheduled 3 nights of racing planned. The plan was to attend all 3 nights of The Tripleheader Frostbuster Weekend but mother nature had her plans to.

On Friday Night, it look like the night was going to be questionable and questionable it was. The plan was to go racing at the Marshalltown Speedway "What Friday Nights Are Made For" for The Tri-County Heating & Cooling/S&B Trailers Frostbuster but mother nature came and took the program away eventually. At 2:15 pm on Friday, every thing looked good to go right after the rain had stopped but at 2:30 pm on Friday things changed so the nights racing was cancelled.

Saturday Night it was off to "Iowa's Action Track" The Boone Speedway for its Annual Frostbuster which was suppose to be the 2nd night of The Tripleheader Frostbuster Weekend, now it was the 1st of 2 nights of the frostbuster weekend. A total of 164 IMCA cars signed in to race and 4 Dwarf Cars/Mod Lites signed in to Hot Lap.

The 1st feature of the night in Boone was the 20 Lap IMCA Sport Mod feature but before the would happen the 42 sport mods signed in would have to qualify through 6 heats and 2 b-features to get the field to 24 cars. Once that happened the A-feature would start out with a caution before one lap would be completed when Tracy Wassenberg spun in turn 2. When the race got going the race would run to its finish without another caution. Cody Hennings would lead the first 12 laps before losing the lead to "The General" Troy Jerovetz from Green Bay, Wisconsin took the lead on lap 13 and went on to the win. "Geo" Geoff Olson got 2nd, Scott Davis got 3rd, Hennings finished 4th and Jared Timmerman was 5th.

Next up was the 25 lap IMCA Modified feature but before that, the 43 modifieds signed in would have to qualify through 6 heats and 2 b-features to get the field down to 24 cars. Once this happened it was time for the A-feature. "Mad" Max Corporan from Marion took the lead on lap 1 but then the caution came out. On the restart "The Frog Station Splash" Dan Ratajczak took the lead which he kept the lead despite 6 more cautions but after the lap 19 caution he would lose the lead. It looked on the restart Ratajczak had spun his tires and "Jammin" Jimmy Gustin, who was 2nd at the time had a great restart and was able to pass for the lead. Gustin took the win, his 2nd of 2010 as he went down to texas last month and won at the 281 Speedway. Finishing behind Gustin was Josh "Happy" Gilman in 2nd, Jeff Stephens in 3rd, Jonathan Snyder in 4th and Ratajczak in 5th.

IMCA Stock Cars were up next with their 20 lap feaure, they had 37 signed in so it took 4 heats and a b-feature to set the field at 24 cars. Trent Murphy would take the lead from the outside front row starting spot. The only things that slow him down was 2 cautions, one after a lap was in the books and another with just 7 laps to go on lap 13. Murphy would take the win, "Flyin Dutchman" Mike Van Genderen was 2nd, "Chelsea Charger" Damon Murty was 3rd, Dustin Smith was 4th and Donavon Smith was 5th.

The final feature in Boone was the IMCA Hobby Stocks with their 15 lap feature. There was 42 Hobby Stocks so it took 6 heats and 2 b-features to get the field down to 24 cars. Before 1 lap was in the books there was 2 cautions but after those Chris Hupp took the race lead and lead the first 3 laps. Hupp was passed by Nick Murty on lap 4 and the only thing slowing Murty down was the caution with 4 laps to go on lap 11. Murty would still maintain the lead and cruise to the win, Hupp was 2nd. Finishing behind Murty and Hupp to round out the top 5 was Nyle Godwin, John Watson and Donnie Gustoff.

So Sunday Night aka Easter Sunday it was off to "The Birthplace of IMCA Modified" The Benton County Speedway in Vinton for the final Night of the Frostbuster Weekend. 105 cars signed in between the 5 divisions in competiton on this sunday.

IMCA Stock Cars has 19 cars signed in so all cars would go to the A-feature. They were up first for their 15 lap feature. "The Chelsea Charger" Damon Murty would take the race lead and actually lead the first 12 laps despite cautions on lap 2, 4 and 9. Murty would have to do battle with Jeff Mueller on the restart of the caution on llap 9 and those 2 would get together forcing the 26 of Brian Irvine to hit the brakes and stop on the race track to avoid getting tore up but ended up bringing out the caution. So as a result Murty, Mueller and Irvine were all penalized so that handed the lead over to the 4th place driver Scooter Dulin on lap 13. Because this caution happened with 2 laps to go the race would now end up being a 16 lap feature. Dulin would lead the remaining laps and take the win, Murty took 14th, Mueller was 15th and Irvine was 16th. Finishing behind Dulin was Justin Temeyer, Bob Ahrendsen, Jason Deshaw and Paul Shepherd .

Next up was the IMCA Modifieds for their 20 lap feature. There was 18 cars signed in so all cars went to the A-feature. Before one lap would be in the books there was 3 cautions so this forced them to start the race single file as oppose to the double file start. Adam Johnson would lead the first lap but he was passed by Marshalltown's Richie Gustin on lap 2, the only thing slowing down Gustin was a couple of cautions one on lap 4 and another on lap 6. Toward the end of the race, Richie Gustin would have to encounter lap traffic but that wouldn't faze him as he would take the win. Mark Elliott would take 2nd after picking up the feature win in Webster City on Saturday, Troy Cordes was 3rd, Scott Hogan was 4th and Jeff Waterman was 5th.

IMCA Hobby Stocks had 20 cars signed in so they were up next for the 15 lap feature. Scott Pippert would lead the entire feature, the only thing slowing down was a couple of cautions on lap 3. Pippert took the win, Nick Murty, who won on saturday in Boone took 2nd. Wes Stanek was 3rd, Jerome Wilson was 4th and Matt Brown was 5th.

The IMCA Sport Mods had the most amount of cars with 30 cars signed in so it took 4 heats and 2 b-features to get the field down to 24 cars. In the feature event, Chris Luloff would lead the first 8 laps. During the 8 laps he held the lead through 3 cautions. Danny Dvorak took the lead on lap 9, shortly after another caution came out. Then 2 more laps would be run before another caution, this caution would expire the time limit. Meaning the next caution or the checkered would end the race but infortunately on the restart it would be another caution so the race ended under yellow checkered on lap 11 just 4 laps shy of the scheduled 15 lap distance. Dvorak took the win, Johnny Whitman from DePere, Wisconsin was 2nd, Joel Rust finished 3rd, Luloff fell back to 4th and Austin Kaplan ended up 5th.

The Final division of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts. William Mitchell lead lap 1, he was passed on the restart of a couple cautions by Nathan Chandler. Nathan Chandler held on to the lead until mechanical issues on lap 6. Brett Vanous made the pass on lap 7. Vanous held on to the top spot until lap 10 when he was passed by Justin Wacha. Wacha took the win of the 12 lap feature, Brad Chandler was 2nd, Vanous was 3rd, Steve Miedke was 4th and Jerry Osxby was 5th.

This weekend all 3 tracks will have begin their track points.

The Marshalltown Speedway will live up to its title by being named "What Friday Nights Are Made For" as the 2010 racing season gets underway with the Ryan Ashton Season Opener on Friday April 9th with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and Mod Lites. Pit Gates open at 5:15p, Grandstands at 5:30p, Hot Laps at 6:45p and Racing at 7:30p.
