ISF Speedway Closes, Hancock County Moves Back To Fridays!

Well as the 2016 racing season unwhining to a close, many track promoters start planning for the 2017 season. One track learned its fate and another announced a few months ago of a group of four going to be in charge.

Last week it came official, that the Iowa State Fair Speedway would not see racing action in 2017 or for three to five years.  Read more on that at https://isfspeedway.com/iowa-state-fair-ceo-board-directors-discontinue-racing-indefinitely-iowa-state-fair-speedway/

Now the word that was tossed around by one party is indefinitely. The definition of indefintely is : not clearly defined or determined; not precise or exact. The other party was saying 3-5 years and racing will be back at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

It is unknown if racing will trully return to the Iowa State Fair Grounds in 3-5 years like the fairboard says so let me say this i have spent the last 20 years going to the races somewhere and i want to see this sport, continue to go so you better get out and support your local tracks before they are gone!

Yes I did spend my 2016 Friday Nights at the Iowa State Fair Speedway and It was fun announcing races all season and I was looking foreward to returning there next season, I now like many of the racers that raced there have to find a Friday Night home elsewhere. Does that mean a return to Marshalltown in 2017, since the race track is only five minutes from the house (a race track I worked at for five seasons before Des Moines) or another track including one that moves back to Friday?

Today the Hancock County Speedway announced it will move its racing program from Saturday Night back to Friday Night in 2017.

Fast Fridays are back in Britt in 2017

October 6th, 2016

Britt, Iowa
- The tradition of Friday night IMCA racing will return to Hancock County Speedway for the 2017 race season. "This is huge for the Hancock County Speedway and the Britt community. We have been hearing from race fans in the community, and they wanted Friday night racing back in Britt" states Brian King, of 4 Wide Promotions. Along with racing returning to Friday nights, many exciting things are happening at the speedway. Some of these changes include a kid's zone, reshaping of the racetrack, Whelen caution lights, and an overall face-lift to the facility. To keep up with all the happenings at Hancock County Speedway, follow along with Facebook, @hcspeedway on instragram, and @hcspeedway on Twitter.

2016 season still has some events left in Iowa or within a few mintues of the border and they include Fall Bash at Cedar County Raceway (Thursday-Saturday), Fall Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway (Friday and Saturday), Fall Extravaganza at Lee County Speedway (Next Friday and Saturday), Memphis Fall Nationals at Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri (October 21st and 22nd) and Shiverfest at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson (October 29th).

Taft, Thrasher, McDaniel and Hughes Take Final Checkers at Bloomfield in 2016

Taft, Thrasher, McDaniel and Hughes Take Final Checkers at Bloomfield in 2016
by Jeremy Fox

Bloomfield, Iowa (September 24th, 2016) - Saturday Night was the end of limited 2016 racing schedule at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway, that it shared with the Eldon Raceway, as 62 cars signed in to tame the 3/8 mile dirt oval on the Davis County Fairgrounds.

First feature of the night was the Sport Compacts/4 Cylinders 12 lap feature event and it was Brandon Reu and Kyle Boyd leading the field to the green. Reu led the opening lap but shortly after the first lap was scored the caution came out for Nathan Moody in turn one. Reu had Boyd and Barry Taft, who picked up the feature Friday Night in Eldon on his back bumper. Taft got the best restart out of all them as he took the top spot away from Reu. Taft held on to sweep the weekend by taking the win ahead of Reu. Chuck Fullenkamp finished third, Boyd was fourth and Kimberly Abbott was fifth.

Next Up was the Hobby Stocks 14 lap feature event and it was Birthday Boy Danny Thrasher taking advantage of the pole as he grabbed the top sport early but fellow Agency driver Nick Ulin was in tow. Ulin edged out Thrasher on lap four and continued to hold off Thrasher until lap eight when Trasher took the lead back. Thrasher held off Ulin to take the win. Aaron Martin was third, Blake Hultz came across in fourth but was disqualifed in post race tech inspection for illegal carburetor that moved Cody Wirt from Otho to fourth and Jon Irwin to fifth.

Dakota Simmons and Jim Walker led the field to the green in the 16 lap SportMods feature event and it was Mystic's Jim Walker grabbing the top spot early and Walker pulled away and was out for a saturday night cruise until the caution came out on lap seven for David Snyder in turn four. Walker had Simmons and Jason McDaniel to contend with on the restart and it Walker saw McDaniel grab the top spot away. McDaniel held off Walker to take the win. Simmons, Brandon Dale and Austen Beccerra rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the 18 lap Stock Cars feature event and it was a pair of four cars that led the field to the green, Jake Wenig and Corey Strothman. Wenig grabbed the top spot right away but Strothman tried to get by and just before the third circuit was scored the caution came out when Strothman spun in turn four collecting Riley Newton and Jason Cook in turn four. Strothman and Newton was tow back pit side meanwhile Cook was able to continue when the race went back to the green. Wenig continued to lead until Mike Hughes, winner Friday Night at Eldon, worked his way up from his sixth place starting spot. Hughes held on to sweep the weekend but admitted in victory lane that his power stearing was going out the last five laps and the radiator hose popped off in victory lane shortly after too. Wenig finished second ahead of Jason See, Todd Reitzler and Derrick Agee, driving brother Cody's car.

Murray Takes His Second $10,000 World Nationals

Murray Takes His Second $10,000 World Nationals
by Jeremy Fox

For the first time since Marshalltown Speedway began holding the World Nationals / Havoc on the High banks ten years ago, the only night I was able to attend was the Saturday Night portion of the show but nobody was disappointed with the racing action that occur.  56 IMCA Modifieds checked in to see if they could put there name in the history books and cash in $10,000 payday that would go on along with that.

Also racing was 43 IMCA Northern SportMods and 27 IMCA Stock Cars to try to win $1,000 and 17 IMCA Hobby Stocks for $500 to win.
Top ten in points from the heat races on Friday Night in the Modifieds locked themselves in the Main Event, those drivers was Terry Phillips, Richie Gustin, Jordan Grabouski, Kelly Shryock, Ethan Dotson, Kyle Strickler, Kyle Brown, Jesse Dennis, Jimmy Gustin and Joel Rust. The rest would compete in Last Chance Qualifers. First was the last chance heats and the top two qualified from each of them with the next three going to the "Final Four" aka Last Chance B-Main. Last Chance Heats winners were Cody Laney, Kurt Kile, Andrew Schroeder, Mike Mullen and Ronn Lauritzen. Final Four race would go to Wisconsin's Jerry Wilinski.

After the field was set in stone for the 50 lap World Nationals Feature event for the Modifieds, it was out of car introductions on the front stretch and the four wide parade lap. Terry Phillips and Richie Gustin led the field to the green flag and it was Gustin grabbing the top spot but Phillips tried to make attempts to get by Gustin but was unsuccessful and then the caution came out on lap 12 for Jon Snyder and Benji LaCrosse getting together in turn four. Richie Gustin saw his brother Jimmy Gustin and Phillips on his back bumper on the restart but held them off until lap 17 when it was Jimmy Gustin taking the leading away from his brother. The caution came out on lap 18 when Joel Rust spun in turn four and then again on the restart when Cody Laney spun on the frontstretch. Jimmy Gustin saw Terry Phillips take the lead away on lap 21 just befor the caution came out for Mike Mullen sliding off the top of turn three. Phillips lead was short lived as 2013 World Nationals Winner Jacob Murray worked his way from 17th to the lead on lap 24.

Murray looked comfortable out front and appeared to be heading on to the easy win when the caution flag was displayed on lap 42 for Ronn Lauritzen spinning in turn four forcing an eight lap shootout. Murray held off 22nd place starter Marcus Yarie and 14th place starter Mike Mullen, both from Wisconsin to claim his second World Nationals Modified $10,000 win in a race car, that he and his family builds at Jake Murray Race Cars. Mullen got by Yarie for second at the line. Phillips slipped back to fourth and 2014 winner Benji LaCrosse started 24th and found his way to 5th. Rounding out the top ten was Tim Ward, Jordan Grabouski, Jimmy Gustin, Ronn Lauritzen and Kyle Strickler.

The IMCA Stock Cars never seem to disappoint as they lived up to the "Class to Tough to Tame" as Mike Schmidt and Damon Murty redrew the front row. Schmidt led the first lap before Murty was able to take the top spot on lap two. Shortly after the caution came out when Donavon Smith, Harley Simon and Andrew Knode got together in turn four. On the restart, Kyle Vanover, Kevin Hebbe, Chris Wiltse, Randy Brands and Jeff Wollam was all deemed stopped in turn two bringing at the caution and Schmidt was sent to the tail for questionable driving resulting in the incident, however on my point of view when the caution came out a few of the cars were still moving but u cannot change the call now. Murty knew that put the "Soon-to-be" National Champion Mike Nichols on his back bumper in which he was able to hold him off to take his second consecutive World Nationals Stock Car feature win as he also claimed Friday's checker. Nichols finished second ahead of Mike Mueller and Joe White. Kyle Vanover and Jeff Wollam both moved through the field to finish in fifth and sixth respectively.

After the initial start was called back in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event it was Brandon Pitts grabbing the top spot. Pitts was holding off Shannon Anderson until the caution came out on lap three for debris in turn four. That allowed Anderson to sneak by on the restart and pull away until the cautions came out on lap 12 for Carl Ellis in turn two and then on lap 13 for Justin Wacha and Keith Burg in turn one. Anderson had to contend with Eric Stanton and it was Stanton taking the lead on lap 16 but Anderson took it right back on lap 17 before a pair of cautions, first for Clint Nelson going off turn three and then on the restart for Chanse Hollatz on the run off road. Anderson and Statnon got in to a heated battle for the top spot and both wanting the win as the came out of turn four for the checkered flag, they got together allowing third place Dustin Graham to sneak by to claim the win. Stanton was credited with a second place finish, and Anderson was credited with last place. Wacha, Calvin Dhondt and Gary Pfantz rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Northern SportMods was a caution filled 25 lap feature event as by my count a total of eight caution flags was displayed. Jason Ebert from Clintonville, Wisconsin grabbed the lead early but just after lap two was scored the caution came out for Cody Olsen and Travis Peterson in turn two. That was not fazing Ebert as he held until the next caution came out on lap seven for Brandon Schmitt, Curtis Veber, Josh Appel and Lynn Brockett got together in turn one. Jared Boumeester from Waseca, Minnesota got by Ebert for the race lead and the only thing slowing Boumeester was the cautions, two on lap 17, one on lap 18 and two on lap 24 forcing a green/white-Checkered finish. Boumeester held off Clint Luellen who made several attempts on the outside but was unsuccessful and had to settle for second. Eric Flander finished third, Curtis VanDerWal was fourth and Adam Armstrong was fifth.

That wraps up the season at the Marshalltown Speedway so keep your eye on marshalltownspeedway.com or Marshalltown Speedway's Facebook page for information about next season.

There is still some racing action to take in across the state of Iowa or just cross the state line over the next month in a half before the season is completed and we all hiberate for the winter so get out to one of the fall specials.

Track Championships Settled on Season Championship Night at Southern Iowa Speedway

Track Championships Settled on Season Championship Night at Southern Iowa Speedway
by Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (August 31st, 2016) - Mother Nature has not been friendly this season at the Southern Iowa Speedway but Wednesday Night, she was and let the regular season end with a bang as two points championships were settled at the checkered flag on KBOE Radio, Mahaska Bottling and Yaw's Auto Salvage Season Championship Night. Fans were treated to out of the car introductions on the front stretch before each feature and also Zack Vanderbeek hot lapped his USMTS Car and Cayden Carter hot lapped his IMCA Late Model.

60 cars signed in to tame the monster half mile at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds and thanks to Yaw's Auto Salvage, $500 extra was thrown to the purse. $100 extra to the feature winner in the Modifieds, Stock Cars, SportMods and Hobby Stocks and $50 extra to the Sport Compact feature winner. $50 extra went to the 2nd place finisher in the class with the highest car count and that would go to the SportMods.

Feature winners on the night was Andrew Schroeder (IMCA Modifieds), Nathan Wood (IMCA Stock Cars), Curtis VanDerWal (IMCA SportMods), Dustin Griffiths (IMCA Hobby Stocks) and Brad Havel (IMCA Sport Compacts). Track Champions were crowned Colt Mather in Modifieds, Louis Lynch in Stock Cars, VanDerWal in SportMods, Griffiths in Hobby Stocks and Shane Evans in Sport Compacts.

Also announced was the 2016 Class of the Southern Iowa Speedway Hall of Fame, and the inductees are Dean Hughes, Terry Schroeder and Pokie West. Those three will be officially inducted Saturday October 8th during the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap KBOE Radio IMCA SportMods feature event. Dakota Simmons and Colton Livezey led the field to green, and it was Simmons grabbing the top spot but just after one lap was completed the caution came out when Shawn Cooney exited off turn three. On the restart, Livezey took the lead away from Simmons and began to pull away from the field until Curtis VanDerWal worked his way to second. VanDerWal began to reel in Livezey and on lap 14, VanDerWal would take the lead away from Livezey. Livezey could not get back by VanDerWal, as VanDerWal went on to take his seventh win in Osky and third IMCA SportMod track championship. Livezey finished second ahead of Cory Van Zante, Austin Paul and Matthew VanGelder.

Up next was the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars 16 lap feature and going into the night, Louis Lynch had a three point advantage over Mike Hughes so you knew even though only eight stock cars checked in (seven race as one experienced troubles in hot laps) it was going to be a great battle until the checkered flag. Nathan Wood and Todd Reitzler led the field to the green but Mike Hughes was determined to win the track championship as he wrestled the lead away from Wood and Reitzler. Hughes held off every attempt from Nathan Wood until the final lap when Wood pulled the crossover move getting under Hughes coming to the checkered flag. Wood edged out Hughes at the finish line to take his second win at Osky and that meant Hughes lost the track championship by a nose. Todd Reitzler was third, Louis Lynch finished fourth and Mike Brown was fifth. Lynch beat Hughes by one point for the track championship.

Andrew Schroeder lead from start to finish in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds 16 lap feature to claim his second win of the season at Osky. Cayden Carter ran second the entire distance with Dakota Hayden, Scott Dickey and Gordon Head rounding out the top five. Colt Mather had the track championship clinched and after having mechanical issues in the heat race so sidelined him for the feature.

Normally the IMCA Sport Compacts ten lap feature, is the first feature but tonight it would be next to last feature and going in to the night Shane Evans had a nine point advantage over Bill Whalen Jr so again just like the Stock Cars the track championship would be decided at the checkered flag. Brad Havel started outside row two and by the end of lap one, he found himself in position one. Havel knew that hard chargers had to be coming but he remained perfect every lap going on to take his first win. Josh Barnes started tenth and finished second. James Roose, Levi Heath and Bill Whalen Jr rounded out the top five.  Shane Evans experienced issues and finished in 13th position but that was just enough as he beat Whalen by one pt for his first ever track championship.

Final feature of the night was the 14 lap Pepsi Cola Mahaska Bottling IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event. Bradley Graham led lap one but Danny Thrasher took the lead away on lap two. Graham was not going to give up as he wrestled the lead away on lap three. Graham and Thrasher now saw Dustin Griffiths race his way up from his seventh place starting spot to take the top spot away on lap four. On thing slowing Griffiths was the caution on lap six when Kelsie Spilman spun in turn four. Griffiths held off late race challenges from Nick Ulin and Thrasher to claim his seventh win of the season and his third Hobby Stock track championship. Ulin finished second, Thrasher was third, Scott Shull was fourth and Graham fell back to fifth.

Weekly Racing may be over at the Southern Iowa Speedway but racing action is not over yet as the speedway will return to action with the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge on Friday October 7th and Saturday October 8th. Dean Hughes, Terry Schroeder and Pokie West will have their official Hall of Fame induction on the Saturday show of the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge.

Van Genderen, Logue, Stanton and Zehm Take Track Championships and Features at Boone

On Friday Night, the plan was to go to the Marshalltown Bobcats at Ames Little Cyclones High School Football game before the decision was made about the races at Marshalltown, however Marshalltown's race remained as an option but at 20 minutes to five the races were cancelled.

Here is some notes about Marshalltown......Its the first time the speedway, three consecutive nights rained out since 2008, that season there was four consecutive nights rained out in April of that year.  Also a note on the rain out, its the third consecutive year the final Friday Night in August being rained out.

Track Champions at Marshalltown was Donavon Smith in IMCA Stock Cars (his fourth at Motown in the Stock Cars), Jared Van Deest in IMCA Northern SportMods (his second track championship), Mike Morrill in Mod Lites (fourth since 2007 at Motown), Eric Stanton in IMCA Hobby Stocks (second consecutive track championship), Jacob Murray in IMCA Modifieds (first track championship at Motown) and Darrel DeFrance in IMCA Late Models (first official track champion for the Late Models since 1990).

With the regular season winding down on Saturday Nights, some options was Boone, Knoxville, Independence or West Liberty for Season championship nights or Harlan for the Tiny Lund Memorial but my choice was made up to head to the Boone Speedway for Season Championship Night.

Drivers would have out of the car introductions on the front stretch giving the fans to see the stars that wheel these hot rods each every night.

First feature of the night was the 17 lap Mod Lites feature event. Bryan Zehm and Joe Glick started on the front row and it was Zehm wrestling the top spot away early. Zehm was comfortable out front and not even lap traffic fazed him, it slowed him up a bit allowing Corey Sauerman, Glick and Josh May to inch closer but none of them got close to him until lap 15. On lap 15, the green flag was replaced with a red flag when Glick came up the race track trying to say in front of Sauerman on the front stretch but after they got together, Glick went for several tumbles down the front stretch. Glick climbed from the car okay. Zehm saw Josh May and Sauerman on his back bumper on the restart so he knew this had to be a perfect restart and it was exactly that as Zehm went on to take his fifth win of the season at Boone. May finished second after starting 12th, Sauerman was third, Randy Bryan was fourth and Joel Keenan was fifth. Zehm also was the 2016 Track Champion.

Up next was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap season championship feature and it was a pair of seven cars leading the field to the green in Eric Stanton and Dustin Graham. Graham grabb the early lead with Stanton running second but on lap eight, Stanton made the move and took the top spot away. Stanton and Graham ran one and two the rest of the way with Stanton claiming his second win and the 2016 track championship. Graham, Aaron Rudolph. Solomon Bennett and Dustin Lynch finished second through fifth respectively.

The IMCA Northern SportMods 20 lap feature event was next and one noteable driver not making the call after experiencing mechanical issues in hot laps was Jake McBirnie. Johnathon Logue and Randy Roberts started on the front row and it was Logue grabbing the top spot right away for Roberts. The caution came out just after lap three was completed for debris on the back stretch. Logue got a great restart, pulled away and did not let lap traffic bother him as he cruised on sixth win and 2016 track championship. Randy Roberts ran second the entire race, Chad Ryerson finished third ahead of Cory Pestotnik and Daniel Tasler.

Donavon Smith had clinched the 2016 track championship in the IMCA Stock Cars so got the right to start on the pole in the feature but it was Jay Schmidt starting on the outside grabbing the top spot. Schmidt held off Smith but on lap seven, it was not Smith, it was Tyler Pickett that got by Smith and began to battle for the lead. Pickett grabbed the lead way from Schmidt on lap eight. Schmidt tried to get back by Pickett but was unsuccessful as Pickett would go on to take his third win of the season. Schmidt finished second ahead of hard charging Kevin Opheim. Smith fell back to fourth and Josh Daniels was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Modified Season Championship feature and the front row consisted of 2016 track champion Mike Van Genderen and Russ Dickerson. Dickerson took the top spot early and just after lap three was scored the caution came out when Bob Daniels would go for a roll off the top side of turn three. Daniels climbed from his car but the car had major damage. Hilmer Doubles Up at Benton County Speedway

Friday Night I went to the Marshalltown Speedway for a night at the races but mother nature had other plans as the second of three Modified heats was on the track the rain came and washed the night away. Saturday I went with the family to the Iowa State Fair so that meant no racing for me and then on Sunday I headed to the Benton County Speedway in Vinton for their Weekly Points Night.

Curt Hilmer took two of five feature events by winning the BCS Micro Mods and IMCA Northern SportMods meanwhile, Matt Brown took the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Damon Murty won the IMCA Stock Cars and Ronn Lauritzen took the Modifieds.

First feature was the 12 lap BCS Micro Mods feature event and it was Curt Hilmer and Kaden Reynolds leading the field to the green. Hilmer wrestled the lead away meanwhile Reynolds fade back. Hilmer look to be taking the win comfortablely but the caution came out on lap ten for Reynolds in turn two. Hilmer held off Scott Beatty and Don Erger the remaining laps to take the win. Beatty, Erger, Matt Post and Cole McNeal rounded out the top five.

Curt Hilmer started inside row two in the 16 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature but by the end of lap one, Hilmer found himself right where he left off after the Micro Mods feature and that was in position one. Hilmer saw the caution come out on lap five for Gage Neal and Tony Olson getting together in turn four. Hilmer saw the caution come out three more times in the next five laps, lap six for Jared Van Deest, Ben Chapman and Kyle Olson in turn three then on lap seven for AJ Fulton in turn three and the final time on lap ten for Scott Meyers in turn one. Hilmer was not to be fazed despite have to hold off Danny Dvorak, Tony Olson, Matt Petrzelka and Van Deest. Hilmer took the win with Van Deest coming back up to finish a strong second, Dvorak was third, Tony Olson was fourth and Petrzelka was fifth.

After a No start call in the 15 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature, Jacob Floyd grabbed the top spot but getting ready to complete lap three, the caution came out when Floyd spun in turn four. That handed the lead over to Matt Brown with Andrew Torkelson in second. Brown saw Brian Happel get by Torkelson for second and they began to battle of the lead. Brown and the field saw the caution come out for Scott Siems go off the top side of turn four. Brown held off Happel to take the win. Justin Wacha, Brett Vanous amd Torkelson rounded out the top five.

Kevin Rose grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event until Curtis Roster took the spot away on lap eight. Roster's lead was short lived as Damon Murty worked his way through and grabbed the top spot away on lap nine. Murty led the remaining laps to go on and take the 300th IMCA Stock Car Feature event held at the Benton County Speedway. Scott Pippert was second, Norman Chesmore was third, Roster was fourth and Jared Daggett was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature and Brandon Maitland wrestled the lead away from Tommy Belmer on the start and by the end of lap four, the caution came out of Belmer in turn four. Maitland continued to lead but the caution came out again on lap ten for Matt Fulton in turn three. Maitland looked to be heading to the win but the caution came out two more times on lap 15, first for Fulton again in turn two and then on the restart for Patrick Flannagan off the back stretch. Maitland knew there was five laps to hold off the field but on lap 18, Ronn Lauritzen got to second and grabbed the lead away on lap 19 from Maitland. Lauritzen beat Maitland back to the line for the win, Scott Hogan finished third, Jason Snyder was fourth and Kaleb Bentley was fifth.

Racing action finished right around 8:30pm leaving only Two nights remaining at the Benton County Speedway including an appearance by the IMCA Late Models. Sunday Night will be Kids Carnival Night plus the IMCA Late Model Sunday Series, Gates Open at 4pm, Track Packing/Hot Laps begins at 5:50pm, Racing to Follow. Van Deest Steals SportMods at Benton County Speedway

Sunday Night it was back to the Benton County Speedway for a great night of racing action and yes there was other options including the rescheduled Night of 10,000 Stars in Britt or the USMTS Casey's Cup Race in Mason City. The races in Vinton did not disappoint the fans in attendance despite the low car count.

Curt Hilmer and Scott Beatty led the field to the green in the 12 lap BCS MicroMods feature and it was Hilmer taking advantage early. Hilmer knew that Don Erger was not far behind and he was right because on lap nine, Hilmer encounter issues on the front stretch allowing Erger to take the lead over. Erger led the remaining laps to take the win ahead of Cole McNeal, Dallon Murty, Matt Post and Beatty.

Only nine IMCA Modifieds checked in for their 20 lap feature and it was Scott Hogan grabbing the top spot from his outside second row starting spot. Hogan held off Patrick Flannagan and Ronn Lauritzen most of the way until lap 18 when Flannagan took the top spot away, Lauritzen got by Hogan for second on lap 19. Flannagan took the win with Lauritzen in second and Hogan in third. Tony Snyder was fourth and Kaleb Bentley was fifth.

Justin Ginther started outside row one of the 15 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature and by the end of lap one he was in position number one. That was short lived though as Leah Wroten took the lead away on lap two. Wroten held of challenges from Brett Vanous but it was Matt Brown that she had to worry about as Brown too kteh lead away on lap eight. Brown and Nathan Ballard took the top two spots away from Wroten and by lap ten, Ballard took the lead away from Brown. Ballard went on take the win ahead of Justin Wacha, who got by Brown for second with two to go. Vanous and Wroten finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Curtis Roster grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature but it was track point leader Norman Chesmore taking the lead away on lap seven. Chesmore held off Roster and Scott Pippert until the caution came out on lap 14 for Travis Van Straten on the front stretch. Chesmore would hold off the late race challenges from Pippert and Nathan Wood to extend his point lead. Pippert, Wood, Jared Daggett and Justin Stander rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the 16 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature and just like he did in the MicroMods, it was Curt Hilmer taking the top spot but by lap four, he saw Matt Petrzelka begin to battle for the lead. Petrzelka took the lead away only to see the caution come out twice on lap six. First caution was for Kyle Olson in turn four and then on the restart for Mike McDonald in turn one. Petrzelka was out front leading until Jared Van Deest, making his first appearance at BCS in 2016 well worth it as he would take the win ahead of Petrzelka. Tony Olson worked back up to finish third after a changing a flat tire, Gage Neal was fourth and Danny Dvorak was fifth.

Van Genderen Wins Thriller Finish at Boone

As racing season is winding down the regular season part and after the races at Marshalltown got rained out ruining my birthday plans. Plan was made to go to the Iowa State Fair in the morning and afternoon then head to Iowa's Action Track, the Boone Speedway for a night of racing action. Mother nature at least treated me right by doing that as the racing at Boone had some exciting finishes as drivers get ready for Super Nationals.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap Mod Lites feature and it was "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins wrestling the top spot away from Angelo Montgomery. Huggins looked comfortable out front until lap traffic at which allowed Josh May to chase him down. May would get by Huggins on lap 11 and go on to take the win. Bryan Zehm and Mike Morrill got by Huggins for second and third respectively putting Huggins back to fourth.  Montgomery came home with a fifth place finish.

In the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature event, it was the youngster Hunter Longnecker grabbing the top spot early but the caution came out on lap two when Jake McBirnie and Cory Pestotnik got together in turn two. On the restart, the caution came out again for Jon Peed, Rocky Caudle, Cory Rose and Lonnie Hodges in turn four. The question was would the sportmods get another lap in, the answer was no because as the field got ready to go back to the green flag,  Daniel Tasler got into Longnecker sending him around in turn four forcing another restart. Curtis Veber running third would now inherited the lead with Tara Longnecker and Adam Armstrong in second and third. Veber led until lap six when Armstrong got by and it was Armstrong cruising on to the win. Veber, Jonathan Logue, Chad Ryerson and Chad Shaw rounded out the top five.

Randy Havlik started on the pole of the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature and took advantage by taking the early lead. Josh Truman started fifth worked his way up to take the top spot away on lap five just before a pair of cautions. First caution was for Tony Hilgenberg and Brandon Leeman in turn two and then on the restart for Tyler Gross in turn four. Truman began to pull away until he encounter lap traffic which allowed Albert Wolfgram and Mike Van Genderen to reel him in. Truman looked to be holding them off only to see the caution come out on lap 18  forcing a restart. Truman and Wolfgram battled for the lead but all eyes was on Van Genderen as they entered turn three on the last lap, Van Genderen was running third but by the time he got to the finish line it was Van Genderen the winner as he saw the hole open inbetween Truman and Wolfgram, he took to edge out Truman by 0.04 secs at the finish line. Wolfgram was third, Havlik was fourth and Dennis Pittman was fifth.

Tyler Brauckman led the first lap of the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature before the caution came out for Brad Dutton and Rod Richards on the front stretch. Brauckman had to contend with Brad Whitney for the lead, Whitney took the lead on lap three just before the caution came out again on lap three. Whitney was got a great restart but saw the caution come out again just after lap four was scored. Whitney saw Trent Murphy sneak by to take the lead on lap ten. Murphy would go on to take the win ahead of Josh Daniels, Todd Fisher, Whitney and Wayne Gifford.

Final feature of the night was the 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event, Shawn Wirtz took the early lead until Dustin Lynch took the lead away on lap six. The caution came out on lap eight for Jack Phillips in turn two and Lynch now knew John Watson was right behind him on the restart. Lynch and Watson began to battle for the lead and it was Lynch that would go off the top of turn one on lap nine. That gave the lead over to Watson but Watson saw the caution come out one more time on lap ten for Gregg Anderson in turn two. Watson led the remaining laps and went on to take the win ahead of Seth Janssen, Solomon Bennett, Dustin Graham and Chad Legere in turn two.

Rust and Armstrong Take First Harris Clash Victories

Rust and Armstrong Take First Harris Clash Victories
by Jeremy Fox

Webster City, Iowa (August 9th, 2016)
- The original plan to head to the Hamilton County Speedway for the 25th Anniversary of the Harris Clash but after a slow start to the day, I was unsure if I was going to be able to attend. However about 15 minutes to 6pm, I was able to head out the door and make the almost 80 mile drive and I would make it just in time to watch the last flight of Modifieds Hot Laps.

66 Modifieds checked in to be the winner of the 25th Annual Harris Clash and 51 IMCA Northern SportMods also checked in during Iowa Modified Speedweek.

Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMods heat winners were Jake Sachau of Denison, Randy Roberts of Boone, Adam Armstrong of Carlisle, Shane Swanson of Forest City, Two-time Harris Clash Winner Doug Smith of Lanesboro and Nick Meyer of Whittemore. B-Feature winners were 2014 Harris Clash Winner Brett Lowry of Montezuma, Jack Housley of Runnells and Erik Laudenschlager of Minot, North Dakota.

In the 20 lap feature event, it was Randy Roberts and Adam Armstrong leading the field to the green. Armstrong wrestled the lead away and began to pull away only to see the caution come out on lap seven for debris in turn four. That appeared to be the only thing slowing down as he got a great restart and would go on and become the eighth different Harris Clash IMCA Northern SportMods winner. Jake Sachau tried to run down Armstrong but came up short after moving up four spots from sixth. Ty Griffith moved up six spots to finish third, Lowry came through the field to finished fourth after starting 13th and Nick Meyer was fifth. Doug Smith, 21st place starter Jared Van Deest, Roberts, Johnathan Logue and Brayton Carter rounded out the top ten. Van Deest was the Hard charging moving up 14 spots next closes was Jake McBirnie moving up 11 spots to finish 13th.

Chase Ellingson of Iowa Falls, Two-time winner (1992 & 1997) Kelly Shryock of Fertile, 2014 Winner Chris Abelson of Sioux City, Josh Ruby of Lakota, 2010 winner Richie Gustin of Gilman and Ryan Ruter of Kanawha, all took Heat Race Wins in the  Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. B-Features would go to Tom Berry Jr of Boone, Tim Ward of Harcourt and Corey Dripps of Reinbeck.

25th Annual Harris Clash also brought back a flavor of original format, as the first ones were ran having to qualify for the Clash by winning feature events so thanks to sponsor TiLube, the inaugural "Dash at the Clash" would take place. Drivers qualifed at ten different events at Marshalltown Speedway, Boone Speedway, 141 Speedway (Francis Creek, Wisconsin), Fairmont Raceway (Fairmont, Minnesota), Independence Motor Speedway, Arlington Raceway (Arlington, Minnesota), Kossuth County Speedway in Algona, Red River Valley Speedway (West Fargo, North Dakota), Hamilton County Speedway and Stuart International Speedway.

The qualifers included Ricky Thornton Jr of Harcourt (Marshalltown), John Logue of Boone (Boone), Luke Lemmens of Kewaunee, Wisconsin (141 Speedway), Eric Dailey of Armstrong (Fairmont), Scott Hogan of Vinton (Independence), Kelly Shryock of Fertile (Arlington), Jeremy Mills of Garner (Kossuth County), Dave Shipley of Argusville , North Dakota (Red River Valley), Ethan Dotson of Bakersfield, California (Hamilton County) and Chris Abelson of Sioux City (Stuart). However do to scheduling issues Dave Shipley was replaced by Rob VanMil of Barnesville, Minnesota and Eric Dailey was replace Josh Ruby of Lakota.

Chris Abelson drew the pole and took advantage right away in the ten lap $500 to win, $100 to start Dash at the Clash.  Abelson saw Ricky Thornton Jr move in to second spot and saw Thornton begin to battle for the lead. Thornton grabbed the lead on laps four and five but Abelson would power back and take the lead back on lap six. Abelson and Thornton continued to battle it out but it was Abelson taking the win. Thornton finished second, Shryock was third, Ethan Dotson was fourth and Jeremy Mills was fifth. Rob VanMil, Scott Hogan, Josh Ruby, Luke Lemmens and John Logue finished sixth through tenth respectively.

The final race of the night was the 25 lap finale for the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds. Kelly Shryock and Chris Abelson started on the front row with Joel Rust and Josh Ruby in row two. Abelson jumped out to the lead and began to pull away until Shryock chase down Abelson and got with in a few car lengths and by lap ten it was down to a car length. While two former Harris Clash winners battled it out, Joel Rust cut a half-straightaway deficit to the top two down to a handful of car lengths late in the race and had a front row view to the battle in front of him.  On the last lap, Abelson and Shryock was side-by-side at the line, going in to turn one, Shryock went low and Abelson tried to cut him off but when neither one of them would give they made contact allowing Joel Rust to sneak on by both of them. Rust led the last three quarters of the last lap to escape to his first Harris Clash win of his career. Rust became the 20th different Harris Clash Winner. Josh Ruby finished second, Richie Gustin took third, Ryan Ruter was fourth and Tim Ward was fifth. Scott Hogan finished sixth, Abelson limbed across to seventh, Jimmy Gustin was eighth, Jesse Dennis was ninth and Corey Dripps was tenth. Hard Charger was Tim Ward advancing nine spots from 14th to fifth, next closest was Richie Gustin and Ryan Ruter, each moving up eight spots from 11th and 12th to finish third and fourth respectively.

Pittman Is King of the Front Row Challenge For Third Time

Pittman Is King of the Front Row Challenge For Third Time
by Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (August 8th, 2016)
- A few weeks ago I was asked by "T-Mac" Terry McCarl to operate the scoreboard during the 21st Annual Price Chopper Front Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway, just like i normally do on a weekly basis there and I accepted it. Monday Night was tough night for everybody in attendance as earlier in the day we had learned the sad news of Sprint Car/Midget racer Bryan Clauson had lost his life after a crash at Belleville Highbanks in Belleville, Kansas. There was a moment of silence before the races, Clauson's car was on display before the races and then paced the field during the A-main and Bucket's for Bryan campaign occur.

Officially 27 entries checked in to claim the big prize of $21,000 at the Front Row Challenge as part of the National Sprint League and it would be won by a guy that is in town for the Knoxville Nationals and a regular on the World of Outlaws, Daryn Pittman.

In the Deberg Concrete/Slade Shock Technology Qualifying presented by Country Builders Construction, Daryn Pittman came 12th in qualifying and was the quick timer with a time of 15.196 seconds. Second fastest was "Blackjack" Brian Brown with 15.208, third fastest was David Gravel with 15.295, fourth fastest with a 15.305 was "Mad Man" Kerry Madsen and fifth fastest was "Young Money" Kyle Larson with a 15.313.

Heat race winners included James McFadden (Seafoam Motor Treatment Heat one), Dakota Hendrickson (Taso's Steakhouse Heat two) and Rico Abreu (Arnold Motor Supply Heat three). Only notable point was in heat two as the field was coming to the checkered flag, Kyle Larson hit an implement tire in turns three and four and broke the left front, it would end the night for Larson.  The Heat winners got prizes from Country Builders Construction, All Pro Cylinder Heads, Snow Plow and Nutri Shop of Maple Grove.

After a brief break in the action, it was time for the TK Concrete Keith Hutton Memorial “King of the Hill” Match Races. Top eight to make it in order of seeding included: Daryn Pittman, Rico Abreu, Brian Brown, David Gravel, Ian Madsen, Kerry Madsen, Danny Lasoski and James McFadden. Round one wins went to Pittman, Gravel, Lasoski and Brown. Round two winners was Pittman and Brown. Pittman took the win over Brown in the final taking home $1,000 for his win.

The orginal pole sitter for the B-Main was to be Kyle Larson, however Larson scratched so the lineup was changed and that moved Rager Phillips to the pole and Cory Eliason to the front row. Eliason took advantage with him outside starting spot as he took the lead and looked to be heading to the easy win but coming out of turn four on the last lap the engine let go, crippling across the finish line to the win but would scratch for the feature. Rager Phillips, Sheldon Haudenschild, Tasker Phillips and Brooke Tatnell rounded out the top five. Paul McMahon, Chad Trout and Bob Weuve got the final orginal eight qualifers for the A-Main. Robert Bell was take as the final qualifer after Eliason scratched.

After a ten minute break, it was time for the 30 lap Price Chopper Front Row Challenge A-Main to take to the track. Daryn Pittman took advantage taking the early lead but just after the completion of lap two, the caution came out for Jason Johnson in turn two. Brian Brown made the move on the restart and took the lead away from Pittman just before another caution came out on lap three for Rager Phillips coming to a stop in turn four. Brown got a great restart but just before the field completed lap five the caution came out for Ian Madsen in turn two, then after the completion of lap six the caution came out again for Justin Marks on the back stretch. Pittman got back by Brown on the restart and began to pull away until the caution came out for the final time on lap 16 for Bob Weuve in turn three.

Pittman was not going to be denied the win as he got a great restart and pulled away to claim the $21,000 which included a $1,000 bonus from USA Chemical. Pittman's total winnings was $22,500 after you add in the $500 cash from Country Builders Construction for Quick Time and $1,000 for winning the King of the Hill. Kerry Madsen made a charge and took second away from Brown on lap 22. Brown held off Brad Sweet for third and Danny Lasoski held Rico Abreu for fifth. David Gravel was seventh, Sheldon Haudenschild was the hard-charger moving up ten spots to finish eighth, James McFadden and Craig Dollansky rounded out the top ten.

Kale Kahne was selected as Mechanic of the Race, accepting a 3/8 Micro Lithium Impact Kit courtesy of Mark Stuchel Snap-On Tools franchisee. Sheldon Haudenschild received $500 from Country Builders Construction and a KSE Power Steering Pump for his Hard-charger honors.

by Jeremy Fox

Vinton, Iowa (August 7th, 2016) - Sunday Night was Autism Awareness Night at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton and 64 cars signed in to tame the quarter mile oval. Hobby Stocks winner got some extra prizes like a new tire and others stuff from Boubin Tire and Tire Plus.

Winners on the night was Darrick Knutsen (Micro Mods), Curtis Roster (Stock Cars), Tony Olson (SportMods), Brett Vanous (Hobby Stocks) and Ronn Lauritzen (Modifeds).

First feature of the night was the 12 lap BCS Micro Mods feature and it was Darrick Knutsen wrestling the lead away from Kaden Reynolds at the drop of the green. Knutsen pulled away and cruised on to take his first win in a MicroMod ahead of Don Erger. Russ Olson took third ahead of Kaden Reynolds and Scott Beatty.

After the intial start was called back in the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event, it was Buck Swanson taking the lead. Swanson held on to that top spot until Curtis Roster and Damon Murty chased him down and Roster took the lead away on lap nine and Murty grabbed second. Roster and Murty began to battle for the lead when the caution came out on lap 14 for Chad Siems lost a driveshaft on the front stretch. Roster held off Murty to take his second win of the season. Swanson finished third, Norman Chesmore was fourth and Justin Stander was fifth.

Mike McNeal led the first two laps of the 16 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature event before Curt Hilmer worked his way from fifth to first on lap three. Hilmer saw Tony and Kyle Olson on his back side just as the caution came out on lap eight for Kurt Hogan around in the bottom of turn three. Hilmer held them off but the caution came out again on lap 11 for McNeal in turn two. Hilmer saw Tony Olson take the lead away on lap 13, Olson would go on to take his eighth win in Vinton. Hilmer finished second with Kyle Olson in third. Matt Petrzelka finished fourth on his fathers birthday and Danny Dvorak finished fifth.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, also saw the inital start called back but when it did get going it was Justin Ginther taking the lead. Ginther fought off early challenges from Michael Kimm. Matt Brown worked his way up to second and got by Ginther just before the caution came out on lap seven for Derek Thran in turn four. On the restart, Brett Vanous worked his way by and took the top spot away. Vanous looked comfortable out front until the caution came out on lap 11 for Thran in turn four. Vanous had to hold off challenges from Nathan Ballard and Brown but it was Vanous making sure he was not to be denied the win. Ballard, Brown, Matt Pohlman and Justin Wacha rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds feature event and it was Mike Burbridge taking advantage of his front row starting spot by leading lap one but shortly after the caution came out for Tommy Belmer and Rod Clement in turn two. Burbridge was not fazed as he continued to lead until track point leader Ronn Laurtizen worked his way from ninth to second on lap five. Laurtizen took the lead away on lap six and two laps later the caution came out when Patrick Flannagan came to a stop in turn one with a flat tire. Lauritzen looked to be heading on to the easy win until the caution came out on lap 18 for Dennis Betzer in turn two. Lauritzen and the field saw the caution came out again on lap 19 for Kaleb Bentley, Dennis LaVeine and Burbridge getting together in turn one. Lauritzen held on through the green-white-checkered restart to take his fourth win at BCS this season. Brandon Maitland, Tony Snyder, Jerry Dedrick and Troy Cordes round out the top five.

Cooney Flexs His Muscles and Dominates at Marshalltown

Cooney Flexs His Muscles and Dominates at Marshalltown
by Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (August 5th, 2016) - Made my fifth visit to my hometown track, Marshalltown Speedway since my Friday Night track for the 2016 season has ended and when I arrived at the track the best sign of the night was the road was back up to the road meaning there was going to be a good field of cars signed in to tame the high-banked quarter mile oval.

Feature winners included Josh May (Mod Lites), Austin Luellen (SportMods), Eric Stanton (Hobby Stocks), Damon Murty (Stock Cars), Trent Jackson (Modifieds) and Todd Cooney (Late Models). Officially 117 cars signed in for Toby K's Hideaway Night at the races.

First feature of the night was the 12 lap Mod Lites feature and it was "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins grabbing the top spot on lap one but Josh May, who started seventh worked his way up to take the top spot away on lap five. May cruised on to take his sixth win at Marshalltown in 2016 and thanked his sister Chelsea for letting him borrow parts for her race car to make the feature. Cory Sauerman got by Huggins for second. Travis Stensland and Randy Bryan rounded out the top five.

Tom Rawlins started outside row two in the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature event but by the end of lap one, Rawlins was in position number one. Rawlins continued to lead holding off Curt Hilmer until just after the sixth lap was completed, they made contact in turn two sending both of them to the tail. Austin Luellen running third at the time would inherit the lead and never look back as he would cruise on to his first win at Marshalltown. Travis Peterson finished second meanwhile track point leader Jared Van Deest worked his way through the field after starting at the back because of mechanical issues in hot laps to finish third. Jonathan Logue was fourth and Taylor Musselman was fifth.

Before a lap was completed in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, the caution flag came out when Travis Merical spin turn one forcing a complete restart. Jack Phillips grabbed the when the race finally got going but just after one lap was scored the caution came out again this time because John Watson came to rest on the front stretch. Phillips saw Eric Knutson and Gary Pfantz started behind him but on lap three it was Leah Wroten that found her way up there to take the lead away from Phillips. Wroten and the field saw the caution come out on lap five for Phillips, Knutson and Pfantz on the front stretch so that placed Eric Stanton on the back bumper of Wroten on the restart. Wroten held off Stanton until lap eight when Stanton took the lead away. Stanton led the remaining laps to take 11th win of the season at Marshalltown in 2016 despite a pair of cautions on lap 13 forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Ryan Grochala, who finished fourth in points at ISF finished second. Wroten slipped back to a third place finish, Jamie Songer was fourth and Luke Bird finished fifth after starting 17th.

Jeff Wollam started inside row two of the 20 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature but by the end of lap one, it was Wollam leading. Wollam was comfortable out front but the caution came out on lap three for Jason Minnehan on the backstretch and Russell Damme Jr in turn two. Wollam got a great restart and ran the bottom side meanwhile "Chelsea Charger" Damon Murty was working on the high side and worked his way from ninth to grab the top spot away on lap eight. Murty pulled away and went on to take his seventh win at Marshalltown in 2016. David Brandies took second away from Wollam, Wollam settled for third. Dave Atcher and Donavon Smith rounded out the top five.

"Hot" Rod Clement had a hot rod early in the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature event, as he wrestled the top spot away from Scott Davis and held off challenges early. On lap six, Trent Jackson, who won his first Modified feature win back on July 8th, taking the top spot away from Clement. Jackson never gave the lead up as he led the remaining laps to take his second win. Jacob Murray finished second ahead of Jimmy Gustin and Ronn Lauritzen. Joel Rust was running second at the white flag but experienced troubles managing to cross the finish line in fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Late Models feature event but before a lap was completed the caution came out when front row starters Ben Seemann and John Emerson getting together in turn two. That moved up Luke Goedert and Darrel DeFrance to the front row and it was the Hometown boy DeFrance grabbing the to spot just like he did the previous two times at Marshalltown. Just after the completion of lap one the red flag came out when Curtis Glover, Craig Jacobs and Doug McCollough went off the top side of turn one. All three cars remained on four wheels but all saw their nights end. DeFrance got a great restart but Todd Cooney worked his way from the 12th place starting spot and made the move to take the lead away on lap seven. Shortly after the caution came out when Paul Conrad went of the top side of turn one and two. Cooney got a great restart and began to pull away only to see the caution come out on lap 12 for Charlie McKenna in turn four. Cooney was not going to be fazed as he pulled away running the high side to go on to take the win. Goedert finished second, Richie Gustin got by points leader Darrel DeFrance to take third. Emerson worked his way back through the field to finish fifth.

Racing action continues next Friday Night at the Marshalltown Speedway with all six classes in competion including the Late Models. Hot Laps at 6:50pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
