Laney and Shyrock Take Wins on Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Night

Just like I did last year I decided to make the almost two and half hour drive to the Kossuth County Speedway for some Thursday Night Thunder racing. Thursday night was the Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Night. Many other sponsors donated money to the purses for all classes plus a fan zone party and prizes for Military Veterans. There was a pre-race flyover scheduled however because of the smoke from the wildfires out west, they were not able to fly. Military Veterans, Local Law Enforcement and First Responders were also giving a standing ovation.

Salute to Veterans had 3 tribute cars in the Modifieds, Stock Cars and Sport Mods. Modifieds was Kelly Shryock, Todd Shute and Nick Meyer. Stock Cars was David Smith, Loren Pesicka and Jeffrey Larson. Sport Mods was Cam Reimers, Colby Fett and Jared Boumeester. Salute to Veterans Night presented by Kemna Auto Group with support for Bruce Lundin Construction, Caterpillar Inc., Chrome Truckstop, Central Financial, F8 Creative, JDR Seeds, Klein Insurance, MaxYield Seed, Meyer Farms, S&B Farm Distillery, Skoglund Meats, Snap-On Tools, Brian's Repair and Algona Plumbing & Heating.

Hunting with Heroes is a non-profit organization based in Lakota, Iowa by Jason and Bernie Becker in 2011. The successes of this organization have been made possible through the generous support of the people of Lakota, Buffalo Center, Rake, Thompson, Ledyard, Algona and Bancroft.

The racing was fantastic as they went two, three and four wide racing. One Hundred Twenty Nine cars checked in on the night including 31 IMCA Sport Mods, 30 IMCA Stock Cars, 29 IMCA Modifieds, 23 IMCA Hobby Stocks, 11 IMCA Sport Compacts and 5 Cruisers. After opening Ceremonies wrapped the first official green flag from Flagman Logan Kelly displayed at 7:45p and the last checkered flag displayed at 12:14a.

Despite all the negativity people have put out about the Kossuth County Speedway in the last few weeks, because of comments made by a fill in announcer, you are wrong about the people and fans of the Kossuth County Speedway. I can tell you this last night I was down in the infield during the opening ceremonies and I can tell you every fan in the stands (packed) was standing up the entire time so to say they don't support the American Flag is wrong and I hope you give them a chance as Ron Reefer and Kossuth County Fairboard to amazing job in every thing they do. Okay enough of that time to get back to talk about the racing.

First feature of the night was the Cruisers 6 lap feature event, Thomas Gronbach and Dalton Lewis led the first lap of the feature event but they spun in turn four on lap two bring out the caution. The caution turned to red flag when the "The Ladies" Peg Lewis and Heather Pesicka made heavy contact with Gronbach and Lewis. Gronbach and Lewis then hit the front stretch wall exiting turn four, however both cars saw their night end. This forced racing officials to call for a green-white-checkered finish, Joe and Chris Heyes inherited the lead but the caution again came out just after lap three scored when the "Pesicka Twins" Makenna and Makiley Pescika spun in turn three. Zach and Brody Vader took the lead away from Joe and Chris Heyes on the restart allowing them to go on to take the feature win. Heyes / Heyes finished second and Pesicka / Pesicka was third. Lewis / Pesicka finished fourth and Gronbach / Lewis credited with fifth.

Jade Lange and Arianna Prothman led the field to the green in the IMCA Sport Compacts 8 lap feature. Lange grabbed lead early but the caution came out when Charles Prime spun in turn two. Lange challenged on the restart by Lucas Parsons and Kaytee Devries, Parsons took over the race lead. Lange refused to go away as he challenged Parsons for the race lead but Parsons able to fend him off until the white flag. Lange made the move to take the race lead away and held off Parsons to take his third feature win in as many weeks at Kossuth County. Parsons finished second, RJ Esqueda got by Devries for third, Devries was fourth and Chris Wilson was fifth.

Mike Smith wrestled the early race lead away from fellow row starter Chris Krug in the twelve lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature. Smith held off Krug and Dylan Fitzpatrick until the caution came out on lap four when Logan Knudson slowed in turn one. Smith held off Krug but now also had to contend with Josh Sidles, as Sidles took second away from Krug. The cautions came out again on lap seven for Justin Jones in turn two and lap nine for Brandon Nielsen in turn four and Josh Jorgenson in turn one. Smith held off Sidles on the restarts but Sidles continue to put pressure on the youngster. Sidles made the move and beat Smith to the finish line to take the feature win, just as they came across the line the caution came out for Tyler Beckler in turn one and Jorgenson in turn four. With Sidles taking the feature win and the Smith finished second, rounding out the top five was Fitzpatrick, Carter Koop and Krug.

Up next was the IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature event. Izac Mallicoat grabbed the early lead fendinf off George Nordman and Colby Fett. The caution came out just after lap two scored in the books when Jake Sachau spun in turn four. Mallicoat again fended off Nordman and Fett on the restart but the caution came out again after lap three scored when Greg Elliott spun in turn four. Mallicoat, Nordman and Fett went three wide on the restart with Mallicoat maintaining the lead on lap four. Fett edged out Nordman for second and then took the race lead away from Mallicoat on lap five. The caution came out two more times on lap six and seven for Greg Noah spinning. Colby Fett held off brother Alec Fett on the restart of both cautions before pulling away to go on and take his third win of the season in Algona. Nordman finished runner-up, Austin Schrage finished third, Jared Boumesster was fourth and Alec Fett fell back to fifth.

Chanse Hollatz and Donavon Smith led the field to the green flag in the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event. Hollatz grabbed the early lead meanwhile Devin Smith got by brother Donavon for second on lap one. The caution came out just after lap one scored when Bruce Wickman came to a stop in turn three. Hollatz held off Devin and Donavon Smith on the restart but Devin Smith continued to put pressure on Hollatz. Devin Smith took over the race lead on lap four, Kelly Shryock took over second a lap later. Shryock then battled with Devin Smith for the race lead and Shryock grabbed the lead away on lap nine. The last race caution came out on lap ten when Kevin Opheim got into McCain Jennings sending Jennings into the back stretch wall, Opheim got the black flag for questionable driving. Shryock held of Donavon Smith and Chad Palmer on the restart to go on and take the feature win. Palmer finished second with Wednesday's winner in Spencer Jake O'Neil finishing third. Donavon Smith finished fourth and Zane DeVilbiss was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Cody Laney led from start to finish in the only feature to have no cautions. Laney had to fend off Zane DeVilbiss in the early going and then Jeremy Mills before getting a little separation. Laney took the feature win pocketing $4,525 for his winning effort, DeVilbiss finished second. Kelly Shryock, Tim Ward and Mills rounded out the top five.
Once again great job by Jason and Bernie Becker for putting together the Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Night, this year a three night tour between Clay County, Kossuth County and Boone. Also great job by Ron Reefer and the Kossuth County Fairboard for all their hard work on producing a great racing surface. Also great job by Race Director / Flagman Logan Kelly and Announcer Chad Meyer, you guys are among the best in the business.

Next Thursday August 5th, Kossuth County Speedway in Algona will be the Denny Hovinga and Gary Harken Memorial during the Kossuth County Fair. Both Hovinga and Harken inducted in the Kossuth County Agricultural and Motorsports Museum, Hovinga in 2008 and Harken in 2015. Nezworski, Larson, Mather and Olson Among Winners on Iowa Donor Night in Indee

The Independence Motor Speedway raced to save lives on Saturday as the speedway hosted the Iowa Donor Network Night. Iowa Donor Network was on hand with Info and for people to sign up as an organ donor. Drivers Prizes, Donation Honorees, Raffles, Prizes and Apparel for Sale plus the first 300 adults got a gift from Longhorn Steakhouse. One Hundred-Thirty cars checked in the back gate to claim the increased purse but they must have the green ribbon sticker on the car in victory lane to claim the extra money. Each driver would get a ribbon after they showed proof of being a donor or signed up. Special Thanks to Jess Ender for all her hard work to put this night together.

Night started an hour later because of the extreme heat but that did not stop them from going two and three wide all night and few times managed four wide racing. Racing action completed in 3 hours and 31 minutes even with the late start, as the last checkered flag displayed at 10:31pm.

First feature of the night was the Burco Sales IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature. Kyle Olson and Nebraska's Cameron Meyer led the field to the green flag with Olson taking the top spot early. Kyle Olson held of Brandon Tharp and Shane Paris until lap seven. Paris took the top spot away from Kyle Olson but Olson did not go away and took back the race lead just before the caution on lap ten. The caution was for Kole Quam, as he hit an infield tire in turn four. Kyle Olson held off Paris and Brandon Tharp on the restart to go on take his first win of the season in Indee. Paris finished second, Justin Becker was third, Brandon Tharp was fourth and Tony Olson was fifth. Hard Charger was Tyler Soppe moving up 9 spots to finish seventh.

Jacob Ellithorpe grabbed the early race lead of the Dominator Chassis IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature. Mather pulled away to take his fifth win of the season. Schmidt settled for second, Dylan Thornton moved up 9 spots to finish third and be the hard charger. Jason Hocken was fourth and Tom Schmitt was fifth.

Before a lap scored in the books of the Waterloo Auto Parts Indee Cars, the caution came out for debris on the front stretch. That allowed Chad Dugan to take over the race lead from Steere. Dugan looked heading to victory but experience mechanical issues on lap five and pulled in the infield allowing Steere to take over the race. Steere went on to take the feature win. Carson James, Dave Rosburg, Carey and Kyle Pearson rounded out the top five. Kolton Osborn was the hard charger moving up 10 spots.

Up next was the Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event, Milo Veloz led the opening lap before Jeff "Bones" Larson took over the race lead on lap two. Larson held off Cordes but the caution came out on lap 14 when Tommy Belmer spun in turn three. One more caution came out on lap 16 when Jordan Hicks spun off the top of turn two. Larson held off Cordes to take the feature win. Cordes finished second with Brennen Chipp, Veloz and Kip Seims rounding out the top five. Jeff Aikey finished sixth, moving up 20 spots for the hard charger.

Blake Driscol led all 12 laps of the Waterloo Auto Parts Sport Compacts feature, that went to green-to-checkered caution free. Lana finished second, Justin Hempstead was third, Jay Crabill was fourth amd Logan Clausen was fifth. Clausen moved up five spots was the hard charger.

In the Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, Luke "Birdman" Bird wrestled the lead from Trenton Neuhaus on lap one. Bird got a little seperation until the halfway point allowing Kyle Jared and "Jumpin" Jim Ball Jr to reel him back down. Ball got by Jared on lap ten and then set his sights on getting by Bird. Ball made the move and took over the race lead on lap 12. Ball went on to the victory ahead of Tyler Ollendieck, who took second away from Bird. Bird was third, Neuhaus was fourth and Brett Vanous was fifth. Dakota Simonsen finish tenth but moved up the most spots for the hard charger.

Final feature of the night was the Dunlap Motors IMCA Late Models 25 lap feature event. Andy Nezworski and Logan Duffy led the field to the green flag. Nezworski took the early race lead but the caution came out just after lap four scored when Darren Mish wend off the top of turn one and two. Nezworski fend off Duffy and Curt Martin on the restart before pulling away. Nezworski was on cruise control until heavy lap traffic allowed Duffy, Martin and Sean Johnson to reel him back in. Hot and Wild Night Under a Full Moon in Motown

It was a hot and wild night at Marshalltown Speedway on Casey's and Rumours Bar & Grille Salute to Marshalltown Police. For the second week in a row, the infield decor got rearranged. Eighty-nine cars signed in to tame the high banks, with the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks making a return visit to the speedway. The last checkered flag waived at 10:07pm.

Repeat Winners in the Dirt Trucks, Mod Lites and Sport Mods with Bill Davis Jr., Dillon Raffurty and Jenae Gustin taking those wins. First time feature winners in the Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars and Modifieds with Braden Richards, Todd Reitzler and Ronn Lauritzen taking those victories.

First feature of the night was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks 15 lap feature event. Jeff Johnson and Bryan Spangler led the field to the green flag with Johnson taking the early race lead. Johnson got a little seperation meanwhile team-mate Bill Davis Jr worked his way into second place. Davis caught Johnson and began to race for the lead the two made slight contact going down the front stretch but Johnson hung on to the lead. Davis finally took advantage of a slight bobble by Johnson to take over the race lead on lap 12. Davis held off Johnson to take his second Dirt Truck win in Motown this season and third of the DTRA season. Johnson finished second, Spangler was third, Rick Clark was fourth and "Peanut" Dennis Plain was fifth.

"Busman" Mike Kennedy grabbed the early race lead in the 15 lap IMCA Stars Mod Lites feature fending off David Raffurty. Raffurty tried putting pressure on Kennedy but Kennedy remain tough. On lap three, the caution came out when David Raffurty spun exting turn two but it quickly turned into a red flag when Josh May made heavy contact and when for a light tumble. May went to the hospital for further observations. After the 38 minutes red flag, Dillon Raffurty took the race lead away from Kennedy and never looked back. That was fifth win in a row in Marshalltown for Dillon Raffurty. Kennedy was second, Randy Bryan was third, David Raffurty came back to finish to finish fourth and Douglas Byers was fifth.

In the IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature event, Travis Peterson led the opening lap. Last week's feature winner Jenae Gustin made the move on lap two to get by both Peterson and Joe Luethje to take over the race lead. Gustin pulled away and appeared heading on to the easy win. Late race lap traffic slowed her down allowing Brayton Carter and Austin Schrage to get close but neither of them could get by Gustin. Gustin went on to take her second win in a row. Carter, Austin Schrage, Johnathon Logue and Kyle Olson round out the top five.

Braden Richards led all 15 laps in the IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event, that went green-to-checkered caution free. For Richards, that was his first feature win in Marshalltown. Matt Wahl tried challenging early but came up short, Kaden Reynolds worked his way through the field and could not get close enough to challenge Richards for the win and settled for second. Jeremiah Andrews grabbed third, Solomon Bennett was fourth and Carter Koop was fifth. Up next was the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature. Josh Foster led the first three laps edging out Todd Reitzler at the start finish line. Reitzler finally took the race lead away on lap four. Reitzler pulled away and went on to take his first feature win in Marshalltown this season. Foster finished second. Kyle Everts edged out Jeff Wollam for third by .006 seconds at the line. Wollam was fourth and Michael Jaennette was fifth.

Twenty lap IMCA Modifieds feature was the last feature of the night. Dylan Thornton grabbed the early race lead from his outside second row starting spot. The caution came out on lap two when Gatlin Leytham hit the front stretch wall after a little contact with Tyler DeBouche. On the restart, DeBouche and Jason Morehouse got together forcing the caution to come out again. Another caution came out after lap three scored when Shane Palmer spun in turn three and four. Thornton looked as the guy to beat but he received pressure from Ronn Lauritzen on the restart. The caution came out one more time on lap six when Palmer spun in turn two, just as Lauritzen made contact with Thornton in turn four, race officials called the caution for Palmer giving Thornton and Laurtizen their spots back. Laurtizen made the right move on the restart and took over the race lead from Thronton. Lauritzen went on to take his first win of the season in Marshalltown. Thornton, Randy Havlik, Paul Nagle and Eric Barnes rounded out the top five.

Next Friday Night, the Marshalltown Speedway wraps up the month of July with Triple E Insulators Night. Cordes Takes Victory on His Birthday in Independence

Weekly racing returned Saturday Night to the Independence Motor Speedway for Rydell Parts Customer Appreciation Night. The track was very racy as there was a lot of two, three and four wide racing through out the night and one point they managed five wide. Two drivers had their nights come to an end in the heat races as Logan Takes in the Indee Cars and Nicole Miller in the Sport Compacts, both took a tumble in turn four, they where okay but their cars heavily damage.

One Hundred twenty-three cars signed in at the Independence Motor Speedway and the last checkered flag came out at 10:22pm. Andy Nezworski, Troy Cordes, Cole Mather, Tony Olson, Kaden Reynolds, Dale Schwamman and Brad Chandler all took feature wins.

The caution came out shortly after lap scored in the books when Carl Reninger and Kole Quam got together in turn four. Jackson held off Tony Olson and Brett Thomas on the restart and continued to lead until the caution came out on lap seven for Troy Bauer going off the top of turn three. Jackson had to battle with Tony Olson and Kyle Olson on the restart and on lap nine, it was Tony Olson taking over the race lead just as Jackson spun in turn four. Nezworski pressured by Logan Duffy, Hansen and Curt Martin on the restart but the caution came out again on lap ten for Chuck Lewis in turn four. Nezworski held off Duffy and Martin again and pulled away only to see Duffy reel him back down late as lap traffic started getting heavy for Nezworski. Nezworski managed to keep just a enough separation between him and Duffy to take the feature win. Duffy, Hansen, Sean Johnson and Martin rounded out the top five.

Up next was the 15 lap Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks feature. Trenton Neuhaus led the opening lap before a caution came out when Luke Bird stopped on the front stretch. Barta again held off Schulte but also held off Ronn Lauritzen and Troy Cordes on the restart. Cordes however got by Lauritzen and Schulte setting his sights on Barta. The caution came out on lap 16 when Jerry Dedrick hit an infield tire and then on again on the restart when Keith Pittman spun in turn three. Barta looked like he was going to fend them off again but the caution came out again on lap 17 when Mark Burgtorf spun in turn four. On the restart, Cordes took the race lead from Barta. Cordes went on to give himself the best birthday gift by taking the feature win, his second of the season in Indee. Barta, Schulte, Maitland and Brandon Banks rounded out the top five.

Dale Schwamman jumped out the race lead in the 12 lap Waterloo Auto Parts Indee Cars feature and not even the caution on lap six was going to deny him the victory. The caution was for Reggie Rema spinning in turn four after hitting the infield tire in turn three. For Schwamman, it was his third win of the season. Murty Does It Again And Claims the Cash on Toby K's Hideaway Night in Motown

For the first time in almost three weeks, last race I attended was on June 27th at Boone, It was back to the races because I had been on a family vacation in Washington. So I originally had planned to go to Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway after declining the opportunity to fill in behind the microphone at the Hancock County Speedway on Friday. Bloomfield rained out so that mean it was back to my hometown track, Marshalltown Speedway for the $1,000 to win IMCA Stock Cars presented by Toby K's Hideaway.

One Hundred Thirty Two cars signed in to tame the high banks of the Marshalltown Speedway including 30 IMCA Stock Cars. Dallon Murty was able to claim the $1,000 to win in the IMCA Stock Cars. Other winners included Dillon Raffurty, Jenae Gustin, Kaden Reynolds, Tom Berry Jr and Adam Gates. The racing surface produced fantastic racing all night along. The Final checkered flag came out at 10:25 pm.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts 12 lap feature. Dalton Sowers led the first lap but it was Adam Gates taking the top spot away on lap two. The caution came out a lap later on lap three when Blake Driscol went off the top side of turn two. Gates held off Sowers and John Gill on the restart and the rest of the race to take the feature win. Gill finished second, Sowers was third, Cristian Grady was fourth and Kolby Sabin was fifth.

Nathan Wolfe led the first three laps for the IMCA Stars Mod Lites 15 lap feature event before David Raffurty took over the race lead. David Raffurty got separation between him and Wolfe. Randy Bryan and ninth place starter Dillon Raffurty challenged Wolfe. Dillon Raffurty got by Ryan Bryan and set his sights on David Raffurty. The only caution came out on lap 11 when Douglas Byer spun in the bottom of turn two. David Raffurty got by Dillon on the restart and went on to take the win, Dillon Raffurty was second. Josh May grabbed the third spot, Randy Bryan in fourth and Ben George was fifth.

Up next was the IMCA Northern Sport Mods for their 18 lap feature event. Brian Schrage led the opening lap before fan favorite Jenae Gustin took the top spot away on lap two. Gustin fended off Brian Schrage, Joe Luethje and Kyle Olson. The first caution came out on lap six when Jessiah Taylor spun in turn two. Gustin held strong on the restart but the caution came out again three laps later on lap nine when Jadin Fuller spins in turn two to avoid making contact with Colton Nelson. The caution came out again on the restart for Debris on the front stretch. Gustin determined to not be denied as not even the last caution on lap 11 when Luethje went off the top of turn two. Gustin went on to take the feature win. Eleventh place Johnathon Logue finished in the runner-up spot. Kyle Olson, Kaylin Lopez and Austin Schrage rounded out the top five.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, William Klosterman grabbed the early race lead but just after lap one scored in the books there was a caution. The caution was for Trevor Tanner going off the top in turn two. Kaden Reynolds made the pass on the restart and took over the top spot just before the caution came out on lap three when Darin DeZwarte and Cody Cleghorn got together exiting turn four, the caused a pile up on the front stretch. That pile up collected Travis Merical, Braden Richards, Steven Crees, Mitchell Thomas and Andy Peck. Reynolds fend off Klosterman and Dreu Kueker on the restart and appeared heading on to the easy win however the caution came out on lap 12 when Ben Newhouse spun exiting turn four. Reynolds held on to take his ninth win of the season in Marshalltown. Martin, Solomon Bennett, Tom Killen Jr and Rick Kriegel was second through fifth.

The Class Too Tough Too Tame IMCA Stock Cars was next on the speedway for their $1,000 to win, 25 lap feature courtesy of Toby K's Hideaway. Before a lap scored in the books, the caution came out for debris on the back stretch. Austin Kaplan wrestled the early race lead from pole sitter Kyle Everts went the race finally got started. Kaplan led until the caution came out on lap three when Kenzie Ritter, Dustin Vis, Mike House, Jared Daggett, Leah Wroten and Damon Murty got together in turn four. Michael Jaennette challenged Kaplan on the restart and Jaennette took over the race lead on lap six. Jaennette held off Kaplan and Dallon Murty before the caution came out on lap 13 when Scott Rice went off the top side of turn four. Jaennette led until lap 22 when Dallon Murty took over the race lead. The last caution came out on lap 24, just after the leaders took the white flag when Jeff Wollam slowed in turns one and two after contact from Jason Hall sent Wollam in the front stretch wall. Dallon Murty held off Jaennette and Austin Kaplan on the restart to go on and take his fifth win in Motown. Jaennette was second, Shelby Williams from Texas finished third. Kaplan fell back to fourth and Tyler Pickett was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature event, Zack Rawlins led the first lap before Drew Janssen took the lead away on lap two. Janssen held on to the race lead until Tom Berry Jr worked his way from sixth. Berry grabbed the race lead away on lap nine and set sail away with only lap traffic slowing him down but not enough as Berry took the win by over 3.5 seconds. Janssen, Rawlins, Dylan Thornton and Thor Anderson rounded out the top five.
