Cold Weather Brings Great Racing to the Hamilton County Speedway.

By:  Ryan Bergeson

Race fans and drivers would not let a blustery northern wind and cold temperatures keep them from enjoying another exciting evening at the Hamilton County Speedway.  The Hamilton County Speedway opened the 2013 season back on Saturday, April 27 and since that evening, Mother Nature has dealt the Midwest frustrating and unpredictable weather conditions.  Despite sporadic weather conditions, the track crew put together a beautiful racing surface this past Saturday night that was smooth and multi-grooved.  84 race teams would brave the chilly weather on Saturday night and put on an action packed night of racing for the diehards in the grandstand.
The qualifying heat races went quickly and race fans were treated to car rides during intermission.  When the IMCA Sport Compacts came out to compete, it was Dustin Haggard pacing the field.  Haggard was able to hold off a late race charge by Adam Strunk and was first to the checkered flag.  Haggard was the winner followed by Strunk, Kalan Guthrie, and Danny Sassman
The Stock Car division would be next up on the raceway with a great field of cars taking the green flag.  Jason Vansickel and Terry Cornielson raced for the lead on the first lap as they were chased by Ryan Leeman.  Several different drivers were able to take advantage of the tremendous racing surface and made their way to the front of the field and as the laps clicked off the board, Mark Elliott found himself out front.  Steve Meyer would follow the Terminator to the second spot but Elliott would prove to be too tough to tame on this night.  Mark Elliott was first to the checkers followed by Steve Meyer who started thirteenth.  Jason Minnehan was able to move from a fifth row starting spot and finish third.  Gary Bass would pilot his hot rod from an eighth row starting spot to finish in the top four.
The Casady Brothers Implement IMCA Hobby Stocks would take center stage.  Myles Michehl would take the lead on the first circuit as he was challenged by Eric Larson, Justin Nehring, and Jeremy Morriss.  Randy Embrey quickly stormed to the front of the field and would make the pass quickly on Michehl.  Cody Nielson, Nehring, Cory Roe, and Matt Mundt were locked in a tight battle for third as Embrey raced to the checkers.  Embrey would be the feature winner followed by Michehl, Nielson, and Nehring.
The George White Chevrolet IMCA Modifieds took over the speedway next.  Brett Meyer would rocket to the lead on the first circuit until he was challenged by Devin Havlik.  Havlik would work the top groove and Meyer was on the bottom side as Greg Elliott worked right behind the top two cars.  Ryan Ruter raced to the top four and looked to have things dialed in until he and Greg Elliott came together in turn three.  On the restart, Mark Elliott made a move in turn four that would spring board him to the top spot.  Mark Elliott and Richie Gustin raced side by side through each turn but Elliott was too strong and did the high side boogie to pick up the feature win.  Gustin finished second, Greg Elliott finished third, and Scott Olson finished fourth.
The Conleys Trucking IMCA Sportmod feature winner was not determined until the final trip by the flag stand.  Andy Tiernan took the lead early and led several laps as many hard chargers were brought in tow behind him.  Rocky Caudle worked through the field and snared the lead from Tiernan as Vandenberg flexed his muscle from the sixth row and worked to the second spot.  Vandenberg and Caudle raced wheel to wheel the final four laps and the race would go down to the wire.  Caudle was able to get a huge run on the back stretch and powered his machine to the bottom of the speedway through turns three and four as Vandenberg went to the topside.  At the flag stand, it was Vandenberg the winner by less than a half car length.  Rocky Caudle, Andy Tiernan, and Matt Lettow rounded out the top four.
The final race of the night was the Motor Inn of Webster City IMCA Late Models .  Darrel DeFrance wasted no time making the pass for the lead over Craig Jacobs and DeFrance dominated all twenty circuits on the way to the feature win.  Craig Jacobs finished second, Jason Hahne third, and Curt Schroeder rounded out the top four.
Another night of action packed racing is considered history and next Saturday will be another historic night.  For news and information, please check the Hamilton County Speedway Website at www.hamiltoncospeedway.com.  Next Saturday night, the Hamilton County Speedway will spring back into action with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing to follow.  Drivers will be competing for the honor of the Hamilton County Speedway Most Popular Driver.  Drivers will be handing out $2.00 off coupons for the fans to get into the races for a reduced price on May 18.  Fans may use the coupon to save $2.00 and also vote for their favorite driver at the speedway.

Gates, Hennigar, Peterson, Luellen, Murty and Brown Win on Cliff Chamber Memorial Night
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (May 10th, 2013) – Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated lately but on Friday Night the Speedway was able to honor a former Marshalltown Speedway Pioneer in  Cliff Chambers. The night produced some great racing all night long.

Josh Zieman grabbed the lead and never let go as he took his 2nd straight Cliff Chambers Memorial in the Nostgalia Stock Car Club of Iowa 10 lap feature. Jamie Huff grabbed 2nd away from Jim Anderson. Pudge Grabill and Tyler Ahlman rounded out the top 5.

Adam Gates lead from start-to-finish in the 8 lap IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Merv Chandler grabbed the runner up spot, Shawn Cooney finished 3rd, Nick West was 4th and Matt Moore was 5th.

In the Toby K’s Hideaway Mod Lites 15 laps feature, the red flag waved before a lap was scored when Joel Huggins and Josh May found their world upside. Eric Hendrickson grabbed the early lead when the race finally got started but it was Andy Hennigar grabbing the lead away on lap 6. Hennigar took his 2nd win of the season at Marshalltown over Bryan Zehm, Mike Kennedy, Randy Bryan and Mike Morrill.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA SportMods feature saw Ryan Ashton grabbing the lead and he appeared to be cruising on to the win until a late race caution on lap 13 came out. Ashton had Travis Peterson and Jenae Gustin right behind him on the restart, Peterson grabbed the lead away meanwhile Gustin spun out. Peterson took the win with Ashton in 2nd, Eric Elliott in 3rd, Sam Wieben was 4th and Joel Rust was 5th.

Nick Murty lead the first 7 laps in the Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA Hobby Stock feature but it was Austin Luellen inching his nose ahead on lap 8 just before the caution came out. Lullen held off the challenges from Murty and Eric Larson to take the win. Murty, Larson, Chris Luloff and Benji Irvine rounding out the top 5/

Eric Knutson grabbed the lead in the Amsoil IMCA Stock Cars feature but the caution waved on lap 2 when Tracy Gienger and Robbie Merkle got together. Knutson resumed command and pull away until lap traffic slowed him down this allowed 12th place starter Brian Irvine and Damon Murty to chase him down. Murty grabbed the lead from Knutson and Irvine grabbed 2nd on lap 14. Murty held off Irvine to take the win meanwhile Knutson experience troubles that allowed Jeff Wollam to claim third. Mike Goldsberry and 18th place starter Jay Schmidt rounded out the top 5.

Final feature of the night was the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds feature and it was Kyle Brown grabbing the lead and the only thing that appeared to stop him from taking the win was the caution on lap 14 for Josh Foster in turn 2. Brown held off late race challenges from Racer Hulin, Jon Snyder, Luke Wanninger and Adam Larson to grab the win.

The racing season will continue next Friday at the Marshalltown Speedway as it will be the Scout Night along with the evening sponsor being Old Timer’s Lounge. Grandstands are $9 for Adults, Children 11 and under is $2. Hot Laps at 7 pm and Racing at 7:30 pm

Hughes and Sobbing Repeat on Kelli Steil State Farm Insurance Night at SIS

Hughes and Sobbing Repeat on Kelli Steil State Farm Insurance Night at SIS
By Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 8th, 2013) – This Season, Wednesday night’s seem to be a head scratcher for Speedway Officials because of good old Mother Nature but  for the third week in a row the track dodged the rain other than a light shower before hot laps. That light shower didn’t hurt the track  because Promoter Mike Van Genderen decided not to add water on the track anticipating the light shower and that decision was perfect as the track produced some great racing all night long.

Craig Brown grabbed the early lead in the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stock feature but on lap 6, the first caution waved when Dale Porter was unable to get his car to the pits. Brown didn’t let it bother him as he resumed command and held off challenges from Kevin Fee. Mike Hughes got by Fee on lap 10 and set his sights on trying to get by Brown for the lead. Brown held on to the lead until a caution waved just after the 14th lap was scored when Blake Miller was unable to get to the pits after his car broke. Hughes slipped by Brown on the restart to take the lead and then the caution waved again this time for debris in turn 2. Hughes held off challenges from Brown and Fee to take his 2nd win in a row at SIS. Brown finished 2nd with Fee in 3rd. Dustin Griffiths and Jamie Songer rounded out the top 5.
