Cold Action Packed Night at the Marshalltown Speedway

On a night that temperatures felt like winter, the action was packed and filled at the Marshalltown Speedway. As drivers and fans had to deal with strong west northwest winds through out the entire night.

First up on the night was the make-up features that would be followed by the nights heat races and features. Because of the make-up features the races started 15 minutes earlier than normal.

The Meskwaki Bingo Casino IMCA Modifieds would be up first as their feature was halted with 3 laps in the books last week when mother nature took it away, the feature would see 19 of the 24 cars take the green flag again with Joel Bushore leading the way. Cars not making the call was Denny Rosenberg, Scott Simatovich, Rod Clement, Josh Gilman and Kyle Krampe. Bushore would lead them back to the green with Luke Wanninger, Jimmy Gustin, Mike O'Lear and Adam Larson on his back bumper rounding out the top 5. Shortly after the feature went green, Luke Wanninger would quickly take over the lead from Bushore. 2 more cautions would fly one on lap 10 whn Andrew Kinser would go off the top of turn 2 and then another one 3 laps later for debris in turn 3 when Rick Speck lost his roof. Meanwhile Richie & Jimmy Gustin tried to catched up to the two young guns but there mission would fail as Wanninger would take the win, Bushore would take 2nd. Richie Gustin would get 3rd with Jimmy in 4th. Mike O'Lear would finish in 5th.

Next up was the Junction Bar & Grille IMCA Hobby Stocks for their 12 lap feature that mother nature rained out from the week before. Clint Nelson would lead the first 3 laps but Matt Hudespeth would take the lead on lap 4. 2 Cautions would fly 1 lap later, first for John Clemens coming to a stop on the run off road and then next for Adam Rickett in turn 2. Hudespeth would continue to lead it meanwhile Devin Smith was charging to the front in his #81 machine. Smith would make the pass on Hudespeth for the lead, Michael Murphy would follow suit for 2nd. Smith would take the win, Murphy would get 2nd, Hudespeth was 3rd, Josh Saunders and Mike Vibbard rounded out the top 5.

It was then time for all of the heat races and once they were completed it was time for feature events and because of the cold weather conditions outside it was decided to keep the program moving right along.

In the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites 12 lap feature. The feature would have 2 yellows before 1 lap was in the books, the first one was for 5 cars spinning out in turn 2 and then for Travis Stensland coming to a stop in turn 2. Randy Bryan took the lead but couldn't hold of Mike Morrill. There was one more caution on lap 5 for Stensland again this time for coming to a stop on the run off road. Morrill took the win, Josh May was 2nd, Eric Hendrickson was 3rd, Bryan took 4th and Tim Hennigar was 5th.

Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods were up next and for the first time this year no b-feature was required to get the field down as all 27 cars would go to the feature. Gatlin Leytham would take the early lead but would see 3 yellows come out before the halfway point. The first 2 came on lap 3, the first one was for Adam Shelman spinning on the front stretch and Neil Follett on the backstretch and then the second one was for Scott Davis in turn 2. The next caution came out on lap 6 when Lauren Vis spun in turn 2 and Shawn Simatovich and Eric Elliott in turn 4. Leytham still continued to lead but on the restart he would be passed by Brett Moffitt. Moffitt would continue to lead through 2 more cautions. First caution on lap 10 when Richie Gustin spun in turn 2 and then on lap 12 when Cody Moore spun out in turn 2. Moffitt would go on and cross the line first as Cayden Carter was trying to catch up to him but he couldnt do it.

However in post race tech inspection, Moffitt was disqualifed for an illegal carb spacer so that would hand the win over to the 14 year old young gun Cayden Carter for Oskaloosa. Jake Strayer would move up to 2nd after Moffitt's disqualification. Geoff Olson, Scott Davis and Eric Flander rounded out the top 5.

Aaron's IMCA Stock Cars saw veterans Tommy Thompson and Rick Brown battling for the top spot. Thompson would take the lead but would see the yellow come out twice on lap 2, first time for Tracy Gienger in turn 4 and then second time for Nathan Wood for spinning on the front stretch. Thompson would continue to lead only to see another caution come out on lap 6 when Seth Bowen would stop in turn 2. On the restart Thompson would lose the lead to Travis Shipman. Shipman would continue to lead through the final race caution on lap 13 for Wood stopping on the run off road. Shipman would go on and take the win, Trent Murphy would take 2nd, Michael Jeannette was 3rd, Thompson would fall back to 4th, Dustin Smith would get 5th meanwhile Rick Brown would end up finishing 13th.

Up Next was the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds feautre. Before 1 lap was complete their would be a yellow flag and a red flag. In the first incident, Jacob Waterman, Brett Ladheoff, Adam Larson, Jay Schmidt and Richie Gustin would get together in turn 1. On the restart, the red flag would come out as the #01 of Joey Galloway from Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada would take a roll on the frontstretch (Some pictures of the wreck car are posted below. He was able to climb from the car, the other canadian Derrick Bigeagel from Manor, Saskwetchen, Canada did make the call for the race because of electrical problems. 2 more cautions would come out, 1 on lap 2 for mulitple cars spinning in turn 1 & 2 and then again for Daniel Hilsabeck in 1 & 2. Jimmy Gustin would go on and take the win, Make-Up Feature Winner Luke Wanninger would take 2nd, David Brown would take 3rd, Todd Conrad was 4th and Ronn Laurtizen was 5th.

The Final Feature of the night was the Junction Bar & Grille IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap features as this feature went green to checkered. Tyler Pickett would lead the race from start to finish as Calvin Dhondt was 2nd. Todd Reitzler, Mike Vibbard and Devin Smith would round out the top 5.

The track was definitely not kind to the drivers as a lot of shit was getting tore up. Meanwhile the fans had to take on the cold weather. Next Friday Night will be the Annual UAW 893 Cliff Chamber Memorial Night at the Races. Pits Open at 5:15, Grandstands open at 5:30, Hot Laps at 6:45 and Racing at 7:30p.
