Rust and Paris Claim Capital Signs Topless Dirty 30s in Motown

Friday night at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway was the Capital Signs Twin Topless Dirty 30s for the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Mods. Modifieds was $1,200 to win with 22 cars signed in, and Sport Mods was $1,000 to win with 18 cars. Stock Cars also ran for $1,000 to win on the night; 26 of them checked in.

After some brief afternoon sprinkles, it was all systems go for racing on the high banks of Marshalltown. Racing action was exciting and intense all night long, with two, three, and four-wide racing with exciting race finishes. Mother Nature tried to return briefly during the features, but to no avail, as the speedway saw the final checkered flag waive at 10:33 p.m.

The first feature of the night, like usual in Marshalltown, is the IMCA STARS Mod Lites sponsored by Knight Sanitation for 15 laps. Colona, Illinois's Jason Masengarb took the top spot early, but Charlie Brown took the lead away briefly on lap three. The caution came out when Tracen Glick was hit hard on the left side, sending him up to the outside wall, exiting turn four. Masengarb got a great restart and regained the lead; he pulled away until another caution on lap nine when Garrett Barber spun in turn two. Masengarb held off Charlie Brown and Josh May on the restart to capture the win. May captured second, Jon Padilla worked his way through to finish third, Brown fell back to fourth, and Bryan Zehm finished fifth.

Rick Kriegel led the first two laps of the Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20-lap feature event. A caution came out shortly after lap two scored when Kale Hemsley came to a stop off the top of turn two. Eleventh-place starter Eric Knutson worked his way through the field, got a great restart, and got by Kriegel for the top spot, but the caution came out again on lap four when Brett Maasdam and Corey VanDerWilt got together in turn four. Knutson held off Kriegel and tenth-place starter Solomon Bennett on the restart and started to pull away, only to see the caution again on lap eight for debris in turn four. This restart added twelfth-place starter Calvin Dhondt to the mix for Knutson and Bennett. Dhondt got by Knutson on lap 11 and cruised on to claim the win. Knutson came home second, thirteenth-place starter Sam West was in third, Bennett was in fourth, and fourteenth-place starter Bradly Graham.

Next up on the speedway was the twenty-lap $1,000 to win the B&B Chassis All-Star Invitational Qualifier for the Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars. Gage Neal out-wrestled Abilene and Texas' Tommy Fain for the race lead and checked out until the first caution on lap seven. The caution was for Austin Kaplan spinning in turn one behind the scoreboard. Neal held off Maguire DeJong and Fain on the restart, as Cayden Carter worked his way from eighth to third. Carter got by DeJong and Fain on lap 10 just before a caution when Garrett Corn spun in turn four. Carter got a great restart and never looked back, taking the feature win. Neal, DeJong, Fain, and tenth-place starter Dallon Murty rounded out the top five. Hard Charger of the Feature, sponsored by AFCO Tools and Midstate Machine, goes to Austin Kaplan, advancing 10 spots.

Matt Avila takes the lead early in the Rugged Radios IMCA Friesen Performance Sport Mods Dirty 30 feature event presented by Capital Signs. The caution came out shortly after lap one was scored by Zander Keeland, Jessiah Taylor, Hunter Clement, Sierra Rose Gary, and Bill Wears in turn one. Avila held off Brayton Carter and Tony Olson on the restart and got a little separation. Carter grabbed second and chased down Avila, taking over the top spot on lap fifteen. Carter led through a caution lap 23 for debris in turn four. Two more cautions came out on lap 27 for Logan Anderson spinning in turn four and debris on the front stretch. Shane Paris got by Carter on lap 28 when Carter left the door open. Paris went on to take the feature win worth 1,000 dollars. Cam Reimers took second, Avila came home third, ninth-place starter Taylor Kuehl was fourth, and Kyle Olson took fifth away from Carter.

The final feature of the night was the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds for their Topless Dirty 30 feature. Before a lap was scored, the caution came out when Jesse Patterson, Riley Simmons, Scott Simatovich, and Brian Eppert were in turn four. On the restart, Dylan Thornton out-wrestled Tom Berry Jr. and pulled away from the rest of the field. Thornton looked to be cruising to the win until lap traffic allowed Berry, Joel Rust, and Tripp Gaylord to reel him in. Then a caution came out on lap 16 when Thornton and Berry made slight contact in turn two, resulting in Berry spinning out. Thornton held off Gaylord, Johnathon Logue, and Rust on the restart and again appeared to be heading on to the win, but the caution came out again on lap 21 for Jake McBirnie sliding off the top of turn three during his battle with Trevor Fitz. Rust took the top spot away from Thronton on lap 24. Rust went on to capture redemption from the week before taking the feature win worth a top prize of 1,200 dollars. Gaylord finished second, Thornton was third, Logue came home in fourth, and Fitz was in fifth. Hard Charger is sponsored by AFCO Tools, and Riley Simmons goes to Gaylord, advancing ten spots.
