Mother Nature did not play nice to the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway back in March when the speedway was scheduled to have the Southern Iowa Frost Out, and it looked as if she was not going to this time. Speedway officials, Mike Van Genderen, the Davis County Fairboard, and the SLMR Series made a quick decision to allow drying and, with better weather on Memorial Day, to postpone the Spilman Auto Parts and Nutrien Ag Solutions Special to then.
With that, I quickly added it to my weekend of racing events to attend over the Memorial Day weekend; Friday I was at Marshalltown Speedway flagging the Corn Belt Clash; Saturday I was watching the races in Boone and wrote a blog recap for that; Sunday I was at Brooklyn Raceway playing race director and head scorer. So I managed to make it four straight nights of racing, with the weather for the last one being amazing. Mike and Rowdee did a great job with the racing surface to get it ready. for the first race in Bloomfield this year. The night was sponsored by Spilman Auto Parts and Nutrien Ag Solutions. There were eighty-five entries, including 17 Malvern Bank SLMR late models, which were competing for the third straight night, Saturday night at Maquoketa and Sunday night in Dubuque. IMCA Modifieds got added to the racing programme thanks to M3 Fab, Hamilton Produce, Car Quest of Bloomfield & Ottumwa, Christensen 5 LLC and Blaine Bryant. The racing action was exciting all night long; there were fireworks after the races. The final chequered flag was at 9:46pm. Meaning by the time I got back to my car and made a pit stop, I arrived home around 12:30pm.
The first feature of the night was the IMCA Northern Sport Mods for their 18-lap feature event, but before a single lap was fully scored, the caution came out when Preston Bright, BJ Charlson and Benjamin Block were on the front stretch. Cody Agee grabbed the lead from the drop of the green flag and had Cole Gillenwater and Will Wolf in tow behind until Brayton Carter entered in the mix on lap nine. The caution came out shortly after lap ten was scored when Charlie Rindom and Daltin Doud spun in turns three and four. Carter took the lead away on the restart and then was only slowed by the final caution on lap 13 when Brian Hol spun in turn two. Carter went on to take the win; Brandon Dale came from tenth to finish second. Wolf was third; twelfth-place starter Dylan VanWyk came home in fourth, and Agee fell back to fifth. Heat winners were Dale, Van Wyk, and Wolf.
The Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) East Series was up next for their 25-lap feature on the semi-banked 3/8 mile oval, presented by Spilman Auto Parts and Nutrien Ag Solutions. This was the 27th different track in Iowa to host an SLMR event and the first late model event held in Bloomfield since 2007. Jesse Sobbing and Blair Nothdurft lead the field to the green flag; Nothdurft powered his way to the early race lead using the top side. Sobbing ran second for a while and refused to go away as Chad Simpson and Dylan Thornton worked their way to the front. Sobbing was able to get by Nothdurft on lap 9, and Simpson got by Nothdurft for second on lap ten. Simpson managed to use both lines to his advantage as he would make the move and get by Sobbing with 10 laps to go. Dylan Thornton entered and began to battle with Sobbing. Simpson ran away to claim his first win of the season, his 9th career SLMR Series victory, and went home with a total payday of $5,750. The feature win was worth $3,000, and he captured the $2,750 Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place starter bonus. Finishing behind Simpson in the 25 caution-free laps were Sobbing, Thornton, Northdurft, and Jason Hahne. Simpson was the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger. Keyser Manufacturing's top qualifier overall and in group 1 was Nothdurft with an 18.313-second lap; Sobbing was quickest in group 2 with an 18.830-second lap. Jacob Hobscheidt and Derrick Stewart won the heat races.Jason See jumped out to the race lead in the IMCA Stock Cars 18-lap feature and got a little separation before Wisconsin's Tyler Wilson reeled him back in just as Derrick Agee was working his way to third. The caution came out one time on lap five when Jathan Fuller was in turn four. See lead until lap 11, when Agee pounced and was able to take the lead away. Agee went into cruise control and captured the victory. Wilson finished second, See fell back to third, Dustin Griffiths came across in fourth, and Corey Strothman was fifth. Wilson, Strothman and John Oliver Jr. captured heat wins.
In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature event, it was Garrett Porter grabbing the race lead from his outside front-row starting spot. Porter's lead would be short-lived as Tom Killen Jr. powered his way by on lap two. The caution came out shortly after lap two was scored when Briar Kriegel and Brayden Wood spun in turn one, knocking an infield tire out on the track. Killen got a great restart and went on to capture the win over Thunder and Lightning, Brett Maasdam, and Corey VanDerWilt. Keaton Gorden and Porter rounded out the top five. Gorden and Brad Graham took the heat race wins.
The final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 18-lap feature event presented by M3 Fab, Car Quest of Bloomfield & Ottumwa, Christensen 5 LLC, Hamilton Produce and Blaine Bryant. Only seven cars showed up and only one yellow on lap two. It was Winnemucca, Nevada, racer Cory Sample leading from start to finish. Jace Whitt, Brandon Banks, Dakota Simmons and Colton Nelson rounded out the top five. Heat race went to Simmons.
The next racing event at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway is during the 2026 Davis County Fair. There will be two nights of racing, Thursday July 16th and Friday July 17th. Thursday, July 16th will have IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, and IMCA Hobby Stocks; Friday, July 17th will have IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot laps at 7p, racing to follow both nights. More information will be released on the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway Facebook.
The next Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) Series event is this Friday, May 29th, at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas; that will be a west series event. The next East Series race will be on Thursday, June 4th, at the Mississippi Thunderspeedway in Fountain City, Wisconsin, before Friday, June 5th, and Saturday, June 6th, at the Mississippi Thunder. They are dual races.
