During hot laps, late model qualifying and heat races, I hung out in turns one and two taking pictures, which you can find the link to further down this recap, before taking my normal spot on the catwalk. As soon as I did, I could see my good announcing buddies Bryan Denekas and Braxton Flattery; they spotted me and gave me a shoutout, which I appreciate. It was also nice to see Anthony Ainslie, the SLMR announcer, as well. I also know I am appreciated when promoter Todd Staley even says hey before the races.
It was the second of three nights of racing at the Hamilton County Fair but the only one to feature the Super Late Models as the Malvern Bank SLMR Series made their appearance on the historic half-mile. The USRA Iron Man Series for Stock Cars and B-Mods also competed, along with the USRA Modifieds and USRA Hobby Stocks. Eighty-six cars checked in. The racing action was exciting until Mother Nature wanted to spoil the fun, ending the racing action at around 10pm.
The USRA Hobby Stocks were up first for their 12-lap feature event. Garner's Branden Schaer jumped out to the race lead as Joshua Monson and Tyler Crimmins battled it out for second. Schaer slipped up leaving the door open, and Monson took full advantage to grab the top spot away. Monson went on to take the win. Zac Smith finished second, Tyler Crimmins finished third, Riley Crimmins was fourth, and Tanner Green took fifth.
Harley Dais from Winona, Minnesota, from start to finish in the caution-free USRA Modifieds 16-lap feature event. It was not easy for Dais, though, as Rushford, Minnesota's Alex Williamson made a late-race charge but came home second. The top three podium was rounded out by Kevin Stoa of Albert Lea, Minnesota. Greg Elliott, driving the number 12 machine, finished fourth, and Lyle Sathoff from Sherburn, Minnesota, was fifth.

Next up was the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) Series for their 30-lap Thursday Night Thunder feature event. Corey Zeitner from Omaha, Nebraska, and Charlie McKenna from Ames led the field to the green flag. Zeitner took the race lead, but he was forced into a 3-car battle with McKenna and hometown favourite Jason Hahne. Hahne worked the bottom side and would end up leading the opening lap before Zeitner took the lead officially. Zeitner created a lead of over 2 seconds over Hahne. Blair Nothdurft, who took the Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place Starter Bonus challenge, and McKenna battled for third and fourth. Tad Pospisil, Jesse Sobbing and Jake Neal battled for position behind them. As lapped traffic came into play, Hahne's and Nothdurft's pressure on Zeitner got more intense as the advantage dropped to under half a second. The first caution came out on lap 21 when Derrick Stewart came to stop exiting turn two. Hahne took the race lead away from Zeitner on the restart before the final caution came out on lap 22. Hahne got a great restart, and despite Nothdurft's pressure, it was Hahne capturing the win at the Hamilton County Fair, his first win with the tour in his hometown, the eighth winner of the SLMR series in 2026, and his fifth career series victory. Nothrurft, Corey Zeitner, Jake Neal and Jesse Sobbing rounded out the top five. Hahne was the Keyser Manufacturing Top Qualifier with an 18.105-second lap in Group 1; Chad Simpson led Group 2 with a 18.211-second lap; and Nothdurft was fastest in Group 3 with a 18.332-second lap. Zeitner, Tim Ward and Nothrdurft took the heat race wins. JC Wyman dominated the Predator Custom Trailers B Feature.
As Victory Lane was wrapping up for the Late Models, I started to feel some drops from the sky. I thought nothing of it, and very quickly track officials rolled the KS Engineering USRA Iron Man B-Mod Series presented by Harris Auto Racing out for their 20-lap feature event. Jake Richards from Lansing, Kansas, took full advantage starting on the pole by jumping out to the race lead with Decorah's Dan Hovden running second. Hovden took the race lead, though, on lap three. The first caution came out on lap five when Jason Prochniak slowed. Hovden was not fazed as he held off both Richards and Duke Erickson on the restart. The final caution came out on lap 15, but once again Hovden held everyone off to capture his first Iron Man Series win of the season. Harley Dais, Wednesday Night's winner, finished second. Richards fell back to third, Stephen Clancy was fourth and Taylor Skauge was in fifth.
The final feature of the night was the KS Engineering USRA Iron Man Stock Car Series presented by Terminator Chassis by Harris for 22 laps. Todd Staley snatched up the race lead early, but the caution came out on lap two when Daniel Ayers spun, and then on the restart, Scott Olson spun, resulting in several others spinning, including Ayers, who decided to go check out the bottom of the scoreboard. Staley led lap three, but Brandon Hare took the race lead away on lap four. The caution came out on lap five, and then shortly after the drops started getting heavier. After asking the drivers to give a thumbs up or thumbs down, they said no to being raceable; the plug was pulled after lap five. The race will be made up; I'm not sure if it will continue where it left off or start from scratch. Keep your eyes on the Hamilton County Speedway or USRA – United States Racing Association – pages for when the race will be rescheduled.
Fair events continue on Friday with the Central Iowa Truck Pullers Association's truck pulls, presented by JA Concrete Construction. The next race at the Hamilton County Speedway is on Saturday, July 25th, with the Hamilton County Racing Association Hall of Fame Night at the races, along with Kids Night, presented by D&B Agro. USRA-sanctioned modifieds, stock cars, B-mods and hobby stocks, along with Crown Vics, are on the card. Pits open at 4p, grandstands at 5p, hot laps at 6:30p, and racing at 7p.
