After missing the races at Marshalltown a week ago because a planned family trip to Minnesota it was back at the Marshalltown Speedway for What Friday Nights Were Made For for some great racing action. It rained early Friday so the big question would be would we get any more rain during the day and the answer was Lets Go Racing.
It was another Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway that would be run smoothly on a track that became dry slick by the end of the night but we would see very tight finishes through out the night.
The heat races were run without any major incidents, the only big incident came in the dwarf cars when Dave Scandrett hit the wall on the front stretch wrecking the front end on his car it would keep him out the rest of the night but other than that all the other divisions had minor incidents.
O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites were up first for their 15 lap feature as 14 of the 15 cars that signed in took the green, the only one that didn't was Scandrett. Colby Oberemebt and Joel Huggins would lead the field to the green. Oberemebt would take the lead on lap 1 but Huggins wouldn't go away as he would be side-by-side with Oberemebt on lap 2. Coming out of turn 4 on lap 2, Oberemebt and Huggins would get together sending Huggins rolling and bringing out the red flag. Huggins would climb from the car okay, Oberemebt would stop on the front stretch and end up on the hook this would hand over the lead to Mike Kennedy. Kennedy would have Dusty Masolini, Randy Bryan, Jimmy and Josh May. Kennedy would begin to cruise away but then lap traffic would get in the way and this would allow Masolini to catch up. Masolini would take advantage and make a pass for the lead on lap 11 and go on and take the win, his 2nd at Marshalltown this year. Kennedy would end up 2nd, Randy Bryan was 3rd, Josh May was 4th and Tim Hennigar was 5th.
It took 4 heats and a b-feature to dwindle the field of 29 to just 24 for the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature that was caution filled. Before 1 lap was completed, Zack Rawlins would hit the wall on the fronstretch and come to a stop just past the flag stand. When the race would get going Gatlin Leytham and Lauren Vis would lead the field to the green and Leytham would take advantage of his pole position as he would jump out to the race lead. Leytham would look to be pulling away but Neil Follett would quickly catch up to him and make the pass on lap 9, how ever shortly after that Cautions would fly. On Lap 11 there was 3 cautions, first when Point Leader Eric Flander and Dylan Book got together in turns 1 & 2, next caution for Curt Hilmer coming to a stop on the Front stretch on the restart and the 3rd caution for a bad restart.
Follett would still maintain the lead with Leytham in 2nd, Scott Davis, Kyle Brown and Brad Iverson in 3rd through 5th. After another lap was completed 2 more cautions would come out when Stacy Clark spun in turns 1 & 2 and then for Cayden Carter in turn 2. Follett would lead on the first restart of lap 12 but would pull off for some mechanical reasons this would hand the lead back over to Leytham. Leytham would have Brown, Davis, Iverson and Geoff Olson on his back bumper. Another lap was completed before the final race caution came out this time for Carter spinning in turn 3 & 4, this would send him to the pits. Gatlin Leytham wouldn't let this faze him as he would go on and take the victory with "Downtown" Kyle Brown coming home in 2nd. Leytham and Brown were followed by Scott Davis, Brad Iverson and Eric Elliott.
The Class "To Tough To Tame" the Aaron's IMCA Stock Cars were up for their 18 lap feature as all 13 cars took the green flag in the feature. Robbie Merkle and Rick Brown would lead them to the green. They would do battle but Brown would lead lap 1, shortly after that the first race caution came out for Tommy Thompson spinning in turn 3 & 4. On the restart Brown would be passed by Steve Meyer. Meyer would be out front but Flyin' Brian Irvine would be coming through the field. 2 cautions would come out on lap 6, first for Michael Jeannette and John Emerson in turns 3 & 4 and then for the restart being called back. On the 2nd restart, Irvine would pass Meyer for the lead. Irvine would look to be pulling away but Dustin Smith had made his way up there to do battle. Irvine was on the bottom by the tires in 3 & 4 while Smith was on the cushion, Smith would try to make a pass but it was unsuccessful and he lost a little momentum and then the final race caution came out on lap 16 when Tracy Gienger spun in turn 4. This would set up an interesting restart between Irvine and Smith but Irvine would be able to hold Smith off and take the win. Trent Murphy would also sneak by Steve Meyer for 3rd as Jay Schmidt would take 5th.
The Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds were up next for their 20 lap feature as 18 cars signed in to do battle. The Mo'town Missle Brett Ladehoff would take the early race lead and stick his car on the bottom and look to be just holding his line. Adam Larson would take force on the topside as he would begin to do battle with Ladehofff, Larson would be credited with the race lead on lap 7 but Ladehoff would take the lead back on lap 8. As everybody was focused on Ladehoff and Larson, they forgot about Jon Snyder, Richie Gustin and Jimmy Gustin as they were coming to the front fast. Snyder would pass Larson and Ladehoff and take over the lead on lap 11. Snyder would hold off late race challenges by Larson and Richie Gustin. In fact coming to get the white flag Larson would slid off the top of 3 & 4 but stay on his wheels. Snyder would take the win in the only feature that would go green-to-checkered, Richie Gustin would take 2nd, Ladehoff was 3rd, Jimmy Gustin was 4th and Mike O'Lear would come home in 5th.
The final feature of the night was "The Wild Thing" Junction Bar & Grille IMCA Hobby Stocks for their 12 lap feature as 23 cars signed in to do battle, 21 cars made the call for the feature. Before 1 lap was completed Adam Rickett, Tony Cox, John Clemens and Jennifer Hulin would spin in turn 2, Clemens would hit Hulin pretty hard, Hulin was checked out by the safety crew for precautionary measures but was okay. When the race got going, Calvin Dhondt would lead the first lap but that lead was short lived as Devin Smith would make the pass for the lead on lap 2 and go on and take the win. Michael Murphy, Nick Murty, Mike Vibbard and Gene Nicklas round out the top 5.
Racing action came to an end at 10:08p. Race Fans and Drivers may notice something new in the next week as the plan is to put the new scoreboard up in the in field this week.
Next Friday Night is JR Motorsports Night at the Races along with the Fastor Pastor Races. Pits open at 5:15, Grandstands at 5:30, Hot Laps at 6:45, Fastor Pastor Race at 7:20, Racing at 7:30. Adults $9, Seniors (65+) $7, Children 11 & Under $2, Pit Passes are $20. See you all next week at the races!
