Every year i plan to make one day of the Iowa State Fair and its always the day that co-insides with the Deery Brothers Summer Series Special at the Iowa State Fair which also features the IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks.
I go down early in the day to walk around and take in the Iowa State Fair and run into many people i know before the races even take place.....Dick and Joyce Eisele (4DFan Report from Postively Racing), Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway Flagman Bob Moses and his wife Bonnie, Deery Series Flagman Grant Oskvig, Las Vegas Motor Speedway Announcer Chet Christner, Dirt Truck driver Lou Siplot Jr and his dad big lou and i am sure there are more that i can't remember.
Also the day was very political as Republican Vice President Paul Ryan attended the Iowa State Fair early in the day at the Des Moines Register Soap Box Stage and then later in the day during the races we learned that President of the USA Barack Obama was at the State Fair and was in the Bud Beer Tent after checking out the Butter Cow sculptures.
Okay enough with that so now its time to talk about the racing at the Iowa State Fair, The racing would see some great racing action all night in some of the features it would take a while to get to the finishes. Myself, Tim Trier and Jerry Van Sickel were doing the pa announcing all night and that was a blast.
The first feature of the night was the IMCA SportMods 16 lap feature it was Austin Kaplan taking full advantage of his pole position as he would lead lap 1 but shortly after the yellow would come out for Tyler Gross in turn 1. Kaplan would get an awesome restart and pull away from the field but the yellow would come out on lap 6 for Cody Hilgartner and Tom Lathrop in turn 4. Kaplan again would get a great restart and another lap would be completed for the yellow would fly twice on lap 7, first for Casey Greubel, Ryan Ashton, Sam Wieben and Matt Webb and the when Jeremy Embrey would have something break coming out of turn 4 on the restart. Kaplan would get another great restart and then the yellow would fly on lap 11 for Matt Webb in turn 2. Kaplan would have Jesse Sobbing right behind him and this time wouldn't pull away as Sobbing would try to get by. Sobbing would fail on numerous attempts until coming off of turn 4 to the checkered as he would take the win by a bumper at the line over Kaplan. Racer Hulin was 3rd, Nick Roberts was 4th and Joel Rust was 5th.
In the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Feature it was Alan Van Gorp taking the early race lead but just after 1 lap the caution would come out for Butch Bass and Bill Fox in turn 4. Van Gorp would have Gary Bass and Brad Pinkerton right behind him on the restart but it was Van Gorp holding off both. The final race caution would be a red flag when Tom Killen would find his world going end over end in turn 3 after making contact with the wall, Killen would be okay. Van Gorp appeared to be going on to the win until 12th place starter Mike Nichols had worked his way up and it was Mike Nichols grabbing the lead on lap 17, Bill Osbahr would also make the pass on Van Gorp to take 2nd a lap later. Nichols would hold off Osbahr to take the win and Osbahr would settle for 2nd. Van Gorp was 3rd, Jeff Anderson was 4th and Gary Bass was 5th.
IMCA Hobby Stocks would have two 10 lap features on the night. In Feature #1 it was Scott Pippert from Elberon leading all 10 laps to take the win, the only thing that slowed Pippert was the only race caution on lap 4. Eric Stanton, Bill Bonnett, Richard Yaw and Matt Webb would round out the top 5.
In Hobby Stock Feature #2 it was Dustin Griffiths leading all 10 laps and take the win with the only race caution on lap 3. Randy Embery would try to chase down and challenge Griffith for the lead but would faile and end up 2nd, John Watson was 3rd, Nick Ulin was 4th and Bill Richards was 5th.
Karl Chevrolet Dirt Truck 18 lap feature was a caution filled feature and almost got its laps cut down because of it. Russ Byriel was the lead for the first half of the race before Tony Moro would get by and lead the 2nd half of the race. Todd Inman would be running 2nd but coming to the checkered something would break and he would end up falling to 5th, Bret Moyer would wind up 2nd. Rick Clark, Byriel and Inman would round out the top 5.
The final feature of the night was the 35 lap Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models and it was Andy Eckrich jumping out to the lead and pulling away. Eckrich would start to hit lap traffic and the only race caution came out on lap 16 for Jason Utter coming to a stop on the front stretch. On the restart, Andy would have his brother Denny Eckrich right behind him and the you would pull away from the field and when they started getting to the back of the field again they would do battle for the lead. Andy would hold off Denny to take the win and Denny would get 2nd. Ryan Griffiths, Colby Springsteen and Jeff Aikey completed out the top 5.
Thanks to Tim and Jerry for letting me work with you guys on the microphone, Mary Brown and Deb Sweeney for letting me grab the results from you ladies and Mick and Angel Trier along with their son Justin for letting me help out at the races last night.
