2nd Annual Smokin Smoe Memorial Recap!

Jones Wins The Smokin Smoe Memorial Open 4 Cycles In The Thunder Dome
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (March 23rd, 2013) – One of the biggest races of the year for the Thunder Dome is the Smokin Smoe Memorial which unfortunately is also the end of the 2012-2013 Thunder Dome racing season. We had aroudn 85 entries sign in too do battle on the day in which we also honored our points champions at the annual banquet and thunder dome after party.

First feature of the day would be the Smokin Smoe Memorial Open 4 Cycles and it would be “Mark Martin of Go-Karts” Mike Jones grabbing the lead  just like he would do last year in the race in honor of his and Turbo Timmy’s friend. Jones this time would not have any problems and would lead all 15 laps to grab the very emotional win in the race that went caution free. Kyle Dietrich would finish a close 2nd, Garrett Hiney was 3rd, Nate Harris was 4th and Taylor Luke was 5th.

In the Jr 1 Animal feature it would be Larissa Miller grabbing the lead nad leading the entire race that would go green-to-checkered. Ethan Starrett would finish 2nd and Summer Anderson was 3rd.

For the 2nd week in a row it would be the “Zombie” Rolend Stewart completing the sweep to take the feature win in the Kid Karts. Keegan Thompson would come across the line in 2nd.

Jr 2 Medium feature would have troubles getting the feature to start 2 by 2 forcing a single file start to the feature event. When the race got going it would Mark Maas that would grab the lead but just after 1 lap was in the books, Coltin Runyan would spin on the frontstretch, Runyan would spin again on the restart on the backstretch. Two laps later Brock Badger would spin out on the front stretch and because of so many yellow flags the feature was shorten to 10 laps. Maas wouldn’t let any of those cautions bother him as he would take the win over Thomas Egenberger, Shawn Cooney, Brooke Havens and Brock Badger. Maas would also be crowned the Thunder Dome Track Champion.

In the Quad C Trophy Class it was Rick Reeves taking the whole shot win over Justin Sutherlin. For Reeves it meant he completed the sweep.

Rookie Beginners would have 7 entries on the day meaning we would run them all together in 1 feature and on the initial start we would have a handful carts get together forcing a complete restart, on the restart Keegan Thompson and Braeden Wildan would get together in turn 4. When the race finally got going it was Kasey Bass taking the lead and appeared to be a fairly easy win. “Toledo Terror” Kinzer Jaennette would finish 2nd. Jayson Alexander was 3rd, Keegan Thompson was 4th and Braeden Wildan was 5th.

The Rookie Adavanced class would see Brady Kohrs lead the entire feature and grab his 4th straight win and 5th of the season. Gaige Stratton from Amana, who wanted to win for his mentor Smokin Smoe would end up finishing a close 2nd. Drake Badker would finish 3rd.

For the 2nd week in a row the  Jr Quads would be split up into 3 feature events based on cc’s and size. Before the features though earlier in the heat races a wild accident would happen involving Caleb Runyan as he would hit the wall off of turn 4 fall off the quad as the quad would roll. Runyan would suffer a concussion and recieve a few stitches.  Since Runyan was unable to compete just to give Kaleb Branchcom in feature #1 some competiton, Vance Misel the father of Jackson Misel would race against him on Jackson’s quad. Branchcom took the win, Runyan would come back a little while later to accept his trophy.

In Feature #2 it was Tristian Rethmeier grabbing the win over Kaden Polson and Connor Jensen. In Feature #3 it was Jackson Misel grabbing the win over little JP Strawn.

Up next would be the Jr 1 Amateur division and it was Kamden Criss  grabbing the lead and he would have to hold off challenges from Brayden Gjere and Caleb Peterson plus through a couple of cautions but Criss wouldn’t be denied as he would take the win. Peterson, Gjere, Jordan Graves and Jonathan Hall would round out the top 5.

Quad B feature would see Doug Slyvester get the wholeshot sweep on the way to grab the feature win and the points championship. Daniel Hollingsworth, Brandon Gillette and Ron Gillette rounded out the field.

Scott Badker would win the Unlimited All-Stars feature as he was the only competitor and because he had only missed 2 races he would also grab the track championships.

Mark Maas would grab the lead and appear to be going on to the win in the Jr 2 Animal but Jessie Miller would catch him and grab the lead on the white flag. Maas would come back and make the move and grab the lead back coming off turn 4 to the checkered flag. Miller finish 2nd, Autumn Anderson was 3rd and Tyler Havens was 4th.

Jr 1 Medium feature would have the initial start be called back but when the race got going it was Logan Duffy grabbing the lead but he would have Nick Rose and McKinzie Culbertson would be right there and when the yellows came out, Duffy was not the one that wanted to see them. Culbertson would grab the lead away from Duffy on lap 7 to go on grab her 3rd straight win. Duffy would end up 2nd, Rose was 3rd, Keegan Havens was 4th and Amy Thomas. Rose finishing 3rd meant he would grab the Jr 1 Medium feature by 30 points over Culbertson.

Stock Heavy feature was up next and it would be a wild one thats for sure.  Kody Havens would spin out in turn 2 that forced a complete restart. Albert Wolfgram would grab the early lead and then Havens would take it away but the yellow came out when Clair Messor would have his right rear tire come off the rim. Little bit later, Havens and Wolfgram would get together bring the caution back out that forced both of them to the tail. Giving the lead to Casey Luke, a few laps later Travis Smock would bring the yellow out after coming to a stop in turns 3 and 4. Travis Hatch would then grab the lead away and hold off late race challenges from Havens and Wolfgram. Havens took 2nd and Wolfgram 3rd meaning Havens wins the points by 15 points. Luke was 4th and Colton Anderson was 5th.

Quad A Feature would see Daniel Hollingsworth get the whole-shot but he would lose the lead to Blake Miller about halfway through. Miller would grab the win and the Quad A Championship meanwhile Doug Slyvester would finish 2nd, Daniel Hollingsworth was 3rd, Vance Misel was 4th and Brandon Gillette was 5th.

Amateur Bikes and Pro Bikes would race together. Only one Amateur Bike and that would be Brandon Webster and Webster would grab the track championship. Keeton Fleener would grab the Pro Bike victory but Clayton Webster would grab the Pro Bike Championship.

One Jr Bike would also compete on the day and that was Jonathan Hall from Jackson, Minnesota.

Final feature of the day was the Mad Dogg Bikes. Keeton Fleener would get the whole-shot victory over “Pants” Brian Kauffman and Brandon Webster. Webster would grab the Mad Dogg Bike Championships.

That puts an end to the Thunder Dome Season and now Full Throttle Promotions will set its sights on The Heartland Kart Tour presented by Maxxis Tires and King Enterprises of Clear Lake.
