Mother Nature was in a good mood on Sunday as the Benton County Speedway in Vinton returned to action on a beautifully sunny day. 108 cars checked in on sunday night to tame the little quarter mile oval on the Benton County Fairgrounds and they produced amazing racing all night long.
Also on hand was Scotty Welsh to hot lap his IMCA Late Model, getting ready for the Sunday series and Adam Streeter to hot lap his Quad, that he was orginally going to race at Marshalltown on Friday before it rained out.
First feature of the night was IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. After the initial start was called back it was Justin Wacha taking the top spot. Wacha saw the caution come out again on lap two when Leah Wroten spun around in turn four. Wacha on the restart had to contend with opening night winner Nathan Ballard. Ballard was able to make the move and take the lead away on lap five but Wacha did not go away as he stayed close meanwhile Austin Luellen worked his way up and made a good three car battle up front. Ballard held on to take the win over Luellen, Wacha, Benji Irvine and Matt Pohlman.
With 27 IMCA Northern SportMods on hand it was determined to take them all to the feature event which was expanded to 20 laps from the orginally scheduled 16 lap feature. After a caution on the initial start when Jared Van Deest, Matt Petrzelka, Trent Jochimsen and Lee Rouse all got together in turn four. Tony Olson took advantage on the restart from his pole position by taking the early lead and just after two laps were completed the caution came out again when Mike McDonald experienced troubles in turn four. After three laps were completed the caution came out again this for Danny Dvorak. Olson continued to lead but had Clint Luellen knocking on the back bumper. Olson and Luellen got into a heated battle for the lead and it was Luellen taking the top spot on lap six just before a pair of cautions. Luellen continued to lead but lap traffic was getting heavy and that allowed Jenae Gustin, who worked her way through the field to reel down Luellen. Gustin edged out Luellen for the win. Colby Heishman finished third, Damon Murty was fourth and Petrzelka was fifth.
Next up was the 12 lap Legend Cars feature event. Bryce Bailey took the lead in the early going but it was Vince Bartolotta taking the lead away on lap three. The Caution came out on lap six for Austin Slabaugh coming to a stop on the backstretch. Bartolotta was not going to let that bother him as he went on to take the win despite a late race caution on lap ten. Warren Ropp, Matt Montieth, Peeken Schneider and Slabaugh rounded out the top five.
Tristian Cordes started on the pole in the 12 lap Micro Mods feature event and he took advantage early. Just after the caution came out on lap three for Brandon Maitland experiencing troubles on the front stretch. Cordes continued to lead until a caution came out on lap five for Brad Chandler in turn two. On the restart, Cordes saw Matt Post sneak by to take over the lead when Cordes experienced some flat tires. Post lead until lap nine when the final race caution came out for Robby Decker in turn four. Donald Erger took the lead away and went on to take his second of the year at BCS. Buster Pate took second, Post was third, Jeff Davis was fourth and Chandler came back to finish fifth.
After a caution in the 18 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature it was Jared Daggett taking the early lead. Daggett held off Curtis Roster but it was Jay Schmidt taking the lead away on lap five. Schmidt saw fellow Tama County driver Damon Murty right behind him and those two battled it out the remaining distance but it was Murty taking the lead on lap nine. Murty took the win over Schmidt, Scooter Dulin, Norman Chesmore and Jerry Miles.
Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature and it was Joe Docekal taking the top spot. Docekal was not fazed by trio of early race cautions or was he because on the restart on lap four it was Zach Less taking the lead away. Less kead until Docekal took the lead way on lap ten. Docekal held off any Challenges from Brian Irvine, Patrick Flannagan and Joel Rust. Docekal took the win meanwhile Irvine exited on lap 18 with a broken left front. Flannagan took second with Scott Hogan in third, Kyle Brown in fourth and Less in fifth.
