Waverly, Iowa (January 2nd, 2016) - As the new year begins the Bobcats Wrestling team made trip to Waverly for the New Year's Brawl featuring Ballard, Dubuque Hempstead, Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids Xavier and host Waverly-Shell Rock. The Bobcats however came home with a sixth place team finish.
Senior Josh Edel led the Bobcats going 5-0 on the day with three pinfalls, a techincal fall and a decision at 170 pounds. Fellow Senior Devan Mann went 4-1 on the day. Junior Reese Hageman, Ryan Bitker and Luis Chavez went 3-2 on the day.
Freshman Jacob Bitker, Senior Mitchell O'Hare and Sophomores Jordan Fox, Decker Mann and Andy Bitker all took one victory for the Bobcats. Junior Zach Howell, Sophomore Logan Baccam, Seniors Hector Hernandez and Jose Zaragoza all came up winless for the Bobcats.
The closest duel for the Bobcats was against Bettendorf which saw the Bulldogs take the first match by pinfall at 285, Bobcats followed up with pinfalls at 106 and 113 by Jacob and Ryan Bitker. Bettendorf than took the next seven bouts before Josh Edel capture a pinfall for the Cats. Decker Mann and Andy Bitker than accepted forfeit wins at 182 and 195. Devan Mann took a 8-2 decision but the Cats fell short 36-33.
In Round two, the Cats took on host Waverly-Shell Rock but fell short 52-24. All the Bobcats team points against the Go-Hawks came by way of pinfalls and an injury default. Chavez, Hageman and Edel all by pinfall and Devan Mann won by injury default.
Ballard defeated the Cats 43-21 in Round three. Ryan Bitker opened the duel with a pinfall at 113 but Marshalltown lost the next three bouts before Reese Hageman won by a major decision 9-1. The Bobcats than lost 145 and 152 before Jordan Fox got his 1st Varsity win by a pinfall. Edel followed up with a Technical Fall but that was all for the Bobcats as they lost by pinfalls at 182, 195 and 285 and a decision at 106.
Up next for the Bobcats was the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead. Mustangs took the win 54-24. Zach Howell lost by pinfall but Luis Chavez got the team points with a pinfall of his own. The Mustangs and Bobcats swapped pinfalls at 132 and 138 keeping the team score tied. Hempstead was able to gap it though with pinfalls at 145 and 160 and a forfeit at 152. Josh Edel responded with a 6-5 decision. Andy Bitker lost by pinfall but Devan Mann responded with a pinfall. Cats then forfeited 220 and lost by pinfalls at 285 and 106. Ryan Bitker ended the duel with a 6-1 decision.
Final duel of the day for the Bobcats was against Cedar Rapids Xavier in which the Cats fell lost 53-21. Chavez opened the duel at 126 with a pinfall before the Cats fell by pinfalls at 132 and 138 and then technical fall at 145. Mitch O'Hare got his only win on the day by pinfall over Jon Bell. Hector Hernandez goes down by a 5-3 decision at 160 before Josh Edel responds with a pinfall at 170. Devan Mann got a 9-3 decision at 195 but the Saints took 220 by forfeit, 285 by pinfall, 106 by decision, 113 and 120 by pinfalls.
Next up for the Bobcat Wrestling Team is the Allie Morrison Tournament at the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse on Saturday at 9am. Other teams competing will be East Marshall, Grinnell, Johnston, North Polk, Norwalk, Solon and Webster City.
