One hundred-thirteen cars were ready to get some racing action in as they rolled in the pit area at the Brooklyn Raceway in Brooklyn for the Spring Nationals and the 3rd Annual Sharon Jaennette Memorial. Originally scheduled for April but was cancelled because of the health pandemic. Last week I got the call from Don that he was still planning to have the Memorial Day Weekend Races but after looking at the forecast he made it a one day on Saturday Night. Racing action was exciting and did not disappoint, the first green flag was at 7:15pm and the final checkered flag flew at 11:48pm.
Front Wheel Drives was up first for feature racing and because of twenty-three cars checked in, the decision to run two features meaning everybody would run a feature event. In Feature #1, Jerry Glass jumped out to the early race lead but the first caution came out on lap two. Glass got a great restart and went on to take the win despite lap traffic that slowed him down. Mark Smith came through to finish in the runner-up spot and Tony Audas was third. In Feature #2, it was Ethan Wauters making his debut after moving up from the Junior FWD class. Wauters and Jody Kingery car battled it out in the early going before he pulled away to take the win.
Micro Sprints feature was up next and it was Travis Rewerts leading every lap to take the win. Tyler Lee finished second and Dallas Darnell was third. Only one race caution came out when Austin Darnell spun in turn four collecting the leader but Rewerts would get his spot back.
Before a lap was completed in the Cruisers feature, the caution came out when a pair of cars got together in turn two. On the restart, Jacob & Laverne Lehman grabbed the race lead until the race was halted halfway when the #1 car came to a stop in the infield with a small fire. Lehman & Lehman looked to be heading on to the win but with 2 laps to got something broke and they came to a stop in turn one. Mark Schuring and Jerret Utterback inherited the lead and went on to lead the final two laps to take the win. Corey Vanderwilt & Brett Maasdam finished in second and Tom Schons / Andrew Tyrell finished third.
Dalton Filloon was the only Junior FWD to make the call of the two cars in attendance so he went out to ran two laps to take the win. The other car was a 14p car of Josh Peterson, it had mechanical issues in the heat race.
Travis Fenton led the first two laps of the Hobby Stocks feature before Brandon Long took over the top spot. Long went on to take the win ahead of Fenton, Jacob Lehman and Joey Hughes.
Figure 8 Trucks was up next and Deal Keasling grabbed the race lead and appeared to be heading on to the win until Mark Ruggles grabbed it out and it was Ruggles going on to take the win. Keasling settled for second. Jerry Moffitt finished third.
Stock Figure 8 had twenty-three cars checked in and they were split into two feature events. In Feature #1, before a lap was completed the caution came out for debris in turn one. Josh Albertson grabbed the race lead but a pair of cautions for debris in turn one and Dustin Filloon grabbed the race lead for a sport time but when the final flag flew it was Dan Arnett taking the win. Rick Goldsberry was second and Albertson was third. In Feature #2, Anthony Goldsberry lead for most of the distance but it was Jim Vonglan stealing the win away on the final lap. Goldsberry finished second and Mike Vandermolen was third.
Open Figure 8 class, Nic Runyan led the early going but with three laps to go, Ted Armstrong made the right move and bullied his way to the race lead. Runyon came home in the runner-up spot and defending track champion Jerrod Thompson was third.
Final feature of the night was the Pro Stock Figure 8 Class and it was the Graham's running one and two the entire distance. There was only one caution the entire race but Brad Graham was determined to take the win ahead of Bradley Graham. Butch Lester got by Kyle Richardson to take the third spot forcing Richardson back to fourth.
Tentatively the next race scheduled at Brooklyn Raceway is Friday June 12th, however that could change as more dates may be added when grandstand spectators are allowed by the state's governor's office. So keep your eye on the Brooklyn Raceway Facebook Page for any updated information.
Thanks to Don and Shelley Wauters for inviting me to come down to give some media exposure. Wish I could have made this blog a little better, maybe next time I will see if I can get some drivers names to make it a lot easier to write the blog. However I can say this I took 770+ pictures and they are posted on the Trackside Report Facebook Page and you find the direct link to the photo album at Brooklyn Spring Nats / Sharon Jaennette Memorial 5-23-20 , If I did not get a picture of your race car I am sorry. If you share the pictures please give me credit because I do this for the love of this sport and not to make money, however if you want to give me some I wouldn't complain.
