Schill, Brandies, Ballard, Long, Ash and Mother Nature Win Memphis Spring Nationals

Its been a long spring with no racing occuring in the state of Iowa because of the COVID-19 Restrictions so it made people to look for some racing and on Friday and Saturday Night. Many drivers across the midwest made the trip to the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri.

The race track received rain during the week but hard work and determination by Mike Van Genderen, Kevin Eggleston, Mark Nelson and a few others made the race track raceable. The tried everything possible to make the best racing surface but as we all know mother nature and dirt has there own mind.

Friday Night saw 209 cars from nine different states (Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wyoming) signed in to compete on the 3/8 mile dirt oval known as The Widest Track in The Midwest. Early in the afternoon there was an open practice from two to four in the afternoon before the track crew went back to iron out the racing track however the racing track was defintely rough on Friday but it still created fair exciting racing action. Hot Laps rolled on the track at 7pm and the final checkered flag flew on Friday at 1:25 am and that meant not arriving back to Marshalltown until just a little after 4 am.

The Sport Mods had 62 cars signed in so it needed six heats and three B-Mains to dwindle the field down. The six heat race winners included Brayton Carter, Earl Pryor, Dylan VanWyk, Maguire DeJong, Logan Anderson and Blaine Webster. Three B-Mains wins went to Brandon Dale, Shane Paris and Thomas Egenberger.

The 18 lap feature event was lead to the green by Lance Schill, who made a trip from Langdon, North Dakota and Hazel Green, Wisconsin's Jason Roth. Schill took full advantage of starting the pole as he was the man out front the entire distance away. The only race cauton came out on lap four for debris in turn four but when the race resumed it was Schill pulling away. Brayton Carter started seventh and was up to second place by lap eight but was a full straightaway behind Schill. Schill got a little loose exiting turn four but he held off Brayton Carter to win by a car-length. Eleventh place starter Josh Most finished third, Jason Roth fell back to finish fourth and Gage Neal filled out the top five. Logan Anderson, Blaine Webster, Maguire DeJong, Bobby Six and Dylan VanWyk rounded out the top ten.

The next class provied the most entertaining and exciting racing action which is no surprise because the division is known as The Class Too Tough Too Tame. Thirty-Three Stock Cars signed in too tame the Scotland County Speedway. Heat Winners was Todd Reitzler, John Oliver, Mitch Meier and Derek Agee. B-Mains went to Jason Hall and Eric Arneson.

In the 20 lap feature event, a pair of drivers from Iowa lead the field to the green flag. Chelsea, Iowa's Damon Murty and Wilton, Iowa's David Brandies lead the field to the green. Brandies and Murt put on a show the entire distance but the interesting thing was they were in the same heat race. In the feature it was Brandies grabbing the lead with Murty running second. Murty grabbed the lead away on lap four but that is when things really got heated up as Brandies was determined not to go away meanwhile Todd Reitzler and John Oliver threw their hand in the mix. Brandies took the lead back on lap nine but Murty grabbed it right back on lap ten. Brandies and Murty swapped the lead at different places of the track on lap eleven before the caution came out. The first caution was for Jim Redman coming to a stop on the top side of turn three.  Murty led the field back to green and when Reitzler slowed because he had a flat tire on lap twelve that allowed Murty to pull away from the other two, who race side-by-side for second. Murty looked to be heading on to the win but on lap seventeen, Jason See blew up exiting turn four leaving a trail of fluid on the track.

Murty, Brandies, Oliver and now Dallon Murty entetered the battle in the final three laps. Brandies nearly spun out forcing Oliver having to check up and that allowed Dallon Murty to slip by and Jeremy Christians from Horicon, Wisconsin in to the mix. Brandies grabbed the lead down the back stretch but Damon was tapping on his back bumper as his son Dallon was sneaking on the inside. Brandies held on to take the win ahead of Damon Murty. Dallon Murty settled for third place finish with John Oliver in fourth and Christians in fifth. Eric Arneson, Trent Nolan, Ty Hill, Derek Agee and Jason Hall was sixth through tenth.

Hobby Stocks was the division with the lowest car count as sixteen cars signed in meaning only two heat races were ran, the winners in the heat races was Rick VanDusseldorp and Nick Ronnebaum. Nathan Ballard redrew the pole for the 14 lap feature and he grabbed the lead and the battle seemed to be for second but Mike Kincaid pulled away. Kincaid snuck his inside of Ballard on lap three but Ballard held off the challenge from Kincaid and went on to take the win. Kincaid finish in second, ninth place starter Derek Kirkland worked his way up to finish third. Van Dusseldorp finished fourth with Kansa's Nick Ronnebaum finishing fifth. Zachary Hemmingsen, Riley Songer, Christian Huffman, Jadyn Stevens and Patrick Pellman rounded out the top ten.

Thirty-Seven Modifieds checked in on Friday Night including Midwest Racing Legend Kenny Schrader. Four Heats and 2 B-Feature help get the field down to 24 cars for their twenty-two lap feature event. Heat race winners included Josh Most, Tom Berry, Kurt Kile and Tim Ward. B-Features went to Ethan Braaksma and Austin Paul. Schrader, from Fenton and Fowler, Illinois racer Michael Long led the field to the green flag. Long  jumped out to the lead meanwhile behind him the track defintely showed it had charcater as Schrader was passed by Kyle Brown and Josh Most on lap one. The first caution came out on lap three when Kyle Brown and Kurt Kile stopped on the track with mechanical issues. Cayden Carter went to the inside of Long going into turns one and two meanwhile Long used the high side momentum to pull away. The cuatuon came out again for debris in turns one and two on lap fourteen. Joel Rust worked his way from fifteenth in to the top five but with four laps to go, Rust clipped the the infield tire in turn two forcing him to exit to the infield.

Long went on to take the win despite lap traffic, Carter was trying to reel him down but came up short and managed to finish second. Jost Most came across in third, ninth place starter Tom Berry finished fourth and eleventh place starter Tyler Madigan was fifth.  Randy Foote, Tim Ward, Schrader, Jacob Murray and Terry Schultz round out the top ten.

Final division of the night was the Sport Compacts and fifty-nine checked in the back gate forcing them to need 6 heats and 3 b-mains to get the field down to twenty-four cars.  Heat race winners was Jeffrey DeLonjay, Josh Barnes, Brandon Reu, Drake Bohlmeyer,  Levi Heath and Jake Benischek. B-Main winners were Nick VanHemert, Tyler Heckart and Zach Bohlmeyer.

Chilton, Wisconsin's Shaun Bangart and Iowa's Chuck Fullemkamp lead the field to the green flag. Fourth place starter Jake Benischek found himself in the number one spot by the end of lap one. Benischeck continue to lead meanwhile Josh Barnes was quickly making his way from seventh until the green flag was replaced with a red flag. The red flag came out when Tyler Heckart took a nasty spill down the back stretch, he climbed from the car uninjured.  A cauton came out on lap five for Cody Van Dusen coming to a stop on the front stretch and also for Josh Barnes coming to a stop on the backstretch. Jason Ash picked up the challenge with Benischek after Barnes had his night come to an end. Ash had worked his way from fourteenth and manage to grab the lead away from Benischek on lap seven. Ash led the remaining laps despite a caution on lap eleven when Ted Trumbo went off the top of turn three. Finishing behind Ash was Fullenkamp, Jadon DeLonjay, Jeffrey DeLonjay and sixteenth place starter William Michel to round out the top five.

My hands were so cold that I couldn't finish writing down the top ten in the Sport Compacts and had to hurry to the car since My Dad, who was my driver for the weekend was in the car warming it up.

On Saturday Night, one hundred and ninety-six cars signed in to race but once again all the track was wanting to pop its head up despite the hard work all night and morning leading up to the races. Once again the racing action was exciting through out the heats and b-features before mother nature made her appearance to wash night two.

Sport Mods was scheduled to race their feature first and actually got started before the rain came in, more on that in a minute. Sixty-One Sport Mods was in the pit area for night two. Heat Race winners was Austen Becerra, Shane Paris, Joel Bushore, Josh Most, Carter VanDenBerg and Adam Birck. B-Main winners was Logan Anderson, Dakota Girard and Dylan Van Wyk. The feature was halted when the rain came in.

Stock Cars had 32 cars signed in for night two of the Memphis Spring Nationals. Heat Race Winners was Damon Murty, Todd Reitzler and Dallon Murty. B-Feature Winners was Nathan Wood and Chad Krogmeier.

Thirty-One Modifieds checked in, heat race winners included Daniel Fellows, Cayden Carter and Tom Berry. B-Main winners was Kyle Brown and Jardin Fuller.

Just like Night one, sixteen Hobby Stocks check in to tame the Scotland County Speedway. Heat Races was won by Nick Ronnebaum and Rick Vandusseldorp.

Sport Compacts saw fifty-six cars signed in so again they used six heats and three b-mains. Dillon Richards, Jason Ash, Ashley Reuman, Chance Bailey, Brandon Reu and Chuck Fullenkamp took heat race wins. Shaun Bangart, Brian Vannausdle and Kolton Keck took b feature wins.

Unfortunately mother nature cut night two short but it also meant getting home at a decent time, as I got back to Marshalltown at 1:30 am.

Thanks to Mike Van Genderen and the staff for letting me come down and enjoy two nights of racing, I had a lot of fun despite the 2.5 hour car ride down. Hopefully we can get to racing in Iowa soon.
