Independence, Iowa (August 6th, 2022) - Independence Motor Speedway was determined to get the Denny Osborn Memorial Late Model Showdown presented by People's Company in after having the initial race night cancelled during the Buchanan County Fair. It was a very hot and humid on and off the track. A total of One hundred and two cars checked in to tame the 3/8 mile including 32 SLMR Late Models.
With possible storms, speedway officials went into hurry up mode and moved the Late Models around to get their portion in but mother nature held off and all seven classes completed the night and despite starting and hour later than normal the final checkered flag was displayed at 9:45pm.
First feature of the night was the Haulin' with Hoker Trucking SLMR East Series Late Models for their Denny Osborn Memorial 36 lap feature for $7,200 to win. Before the race got started their was a 4-wide missing man parade lap in honor of Denny Osborn. Jake Neal out wrestled pole sitter Tad Pospisil for the race lead. Just after the field completed lap one the first caution came out. Neal fended off Pospisil and Ben Schaller on the restart but another caution came out on lap three when Curt Schroeder and Joel Callahan got together in turn four. Neal face challenges from Pospisil and quick timer Charlie McKenna as the trio encountered lap traffic. The final caution came out on lap 25 when Luke Pestka stalled off the top of turn two. Neal got a great restart meanwhile Charlie McKenna got around Pospisil for second. Neal hung on to lead from start-to-finish walk away sweeping the weekend and claiming his third East series win of the season. McKenna came home second, Pospisil finished third, Jeff Aikey moved up from thirteenth to finish fourth and Todd Cooney was fifth. Andy Eckrich, Ben Schaller, Matt Ryan, Curt Martin and Corey Zeitner rounded out the top ten. McKenna was quick time with at 14.751. Pospisil, Darrel DeFrance, Schaller and Curt Schroeder was Idel Ready Mix heat race winners. Dave Eckrich and Sean Johnson took the Predator Custom Trailers B-Features.
Tony Olson took full advantage of the draw-redraw show in the Burco Sales IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature as he jumped out to the race lead fending off Brandon Tharp and Cole Suckow. Olson started to pull away but the caution came out on lap six when Ethan Krall in turn three. Olson got a great restart again and pulled away meanwhile Tharp, Kip Siems, Suckow and Brett Thomas battled for position. The caution came out again on lap 11 when Brandon Tharp slowed on the back stretch, Vern Jackson made contact and spun. Olson got another great restart and went on to claim his seventh straight win in Indee. Suckow grabbed second away from Siems on the last lap, Siems came home third. Kole Quam was fourth and Thomas was fifth.
Next on the speedway the Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, Justin Hanson grabbed the race lead early meanwhile Benji Irvine and Joren Fisher battled for second. Irvine and Fisher than made it a three car battle with Hanson for the race lead. Irvine took the lead briefly on lap eight before slipping up allowing Hanson to regain the lead on lap nine. Irvine took advantage of Hanson making the same mistake on lap ten to take the lead back. Irvine held of Hanson to go on and take the feature win. Hanson, Fisher, Adam Streeter and Brett Vanous rounded out the top five.
Tyler Carey and Chris Luloff led the field to the green flag in the Dominator Chassis IMCA Stock Car 15 lap feature. Luloff out dueled Carey for the race lead but the caution came out just after one lap was scored when Will Sheen spun in turn three and four. Jason Doyle took the race lead away on the restart and Leah Wroten grabbed second away. Cole Mather entered the mix on lap four making it a four car battle. Mather worked his way to second and set his sights on getting by Doyle. Mather managed to do that on lap six prior to a caution when Mitchell Evens spun in turn two. Mather got a great restart but another caution came out on lap nine when Luloff spun in turn one after contact from Kaden Reynolds. Mather hung on to claim his fifth win of the season in Indee, taking home $750 for the victory. Jarod Weepie worked his way to finish second, Doyle fell back to third, Carey was fourth and Kevin Rose was fifth.
Justin Hempstead jumped out the early lead in the Waterloo Auto Parts Compacts 12 lap feature despite having Spencer Roggentien all over the back bumper. Hempstead managed to lead the first 11 laps meanwhile Andrew Bieber worked his way through the field, Bieber worked his way into second on lap 11. Bieber went for on the last lap and did a slide job exiting turn four on Hempstead to take his first feature win. Hempstead finished second, Roggentien was third, Korey Lana was fourth and Jaice Tuttle came home fifth.
In the Waterloo Auto Parts Indee Cars 12 lap feature, pole sitter Kolton Osborn took the race lead and fended off several challenges from Chad Dugan early. The caution came out on lap four when Skyler Dugan spun on the front stretch. Osborn was determined to win on the night in honor of his Grandpa Denny, as he fended off Chad Dugan and Matt Dugan on the restart. Osborn managed to lead all 12 laps going on to take his second win of the season ahead of Chad Dugan, Matt Dugan, Carson James and David Anderson.
Final feature of the night was the 20 lap Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds feature event. Joel Rust finally got the monkey off his back as lead all twenty laps in the feature that went green-to-checkered. Rust win was $1,000 to win making him eligible for the Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational. Jeff Aikey worked his way from sixth to finish second. Austin Kuehl from Arizona finished third. Mike Burbridge ran second early but fell back to finish fourth and Ryan Maitland was fifth.
Next Saturday Night August 13th is a normal IMCA Weekly Racing Night at the Independence Motor Speedway. Dunlap Motors IMCA Late Models, Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds, Dominator Chassis IMCA Stock Cars, Burco Sales IMCA Sport Mods, Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks, Waterloo Auto Parts Compacts and Waterloo Auto Parts Indee Cars. Pits Open at 4p, Grandstands Open at 4:30p, Hot Laps at 6p, Racing to Follow.
Then the following Saturday August 20th is Season Championship Night with the rain date for that night on August 27th.
Haulin' with Hoker Trucking SLMR East Series Late Models will take a week-off before they return to action on Saturday August 20th at the West Liberty Raceway in West Liberty and then Sunday August 21st at the Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City. During the week-off the Malvern Bank SLMR West Series will take to the track on Friday August 12th at the Thayer County Speedway in Deshler, Nebraska.
