McBirnie, Jerovetz, Avila, and Smith Take Salute to Veterans Victories in Boone

Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Tour is a unique event. It started as one race and was run at the Kossuth County Speedway in Algona. Over the years, it has become a 3-race, 4-night tour. Wednesday night, they invaded the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer; Thursday, they raced in Algona; and Saturday night, they wrapped things up at Iowa's Action Track, the Boone Speedway. Hunting with Heroes is a 501C3 non-profit organization that supports veterans through patriotism and outdoor pursuits in Lakota, Iowa.

Drivers racing the Salute to Veterans themes included Joel Rust, Cody Thompson, and Jerry Flippo in the modifieds; Taylor Kuehl and Shelby Alves in the sport mods; Kevin Opeheim, Donavon Smith, and Jim Horejsi in the stock cars; and Mike Smith and Brandon Nielsen in the hobby stocks. The overall best Salute to Veterans car winner voted on by the veterans went to Stock Car driver Jim Horejsi of Marshall, Minn., with his Pearl Harbor salute. Modified drivers Joel Rust with his Air Force Air Superiority – The F15E Strike Eagles, Cody Thompson’s US Army wrap, and Jerry Flippo with “The American Dream is Worth the Fight” wrap. Joining the overall winner Horejsi in the Stock Car class were Kevin Opheim’s “A Flying Family” honoring two from his family who had served, and Donovan Smith saluted the American Sacrifice of the Fighting Sullivan Brothers.  SportMod wraps were Taylor Kuehl, with her Rosie the Riveter Revisited, and Shelby Alves honored pilot Jackie Cochran, the “Speed Queen.” Brandon Nielsen’s Hobby Stock and its US Navy Blue Angels theme and Mike Smith’s Hobby Stock honored the United States Marine Corps.

So my plan was to make it to one Salute to Veterans Tour event this year after missing out on it last year. My first Salute to Veterans Tour was in 2020, after race tracks opened back up from the pandemic. I made it to the Kossuth County Speedway. I returned to Algona in 2021 and to the Clay County Fair Speedway in 2022. Veterans were admitted free, received a meal and drink, a goodie bag and more. Every year, the events get better and better.

A total of two hundred-one cars signed in to take on Iowa's Action Track for night 3 of the Salute to Veterans Tour presented by Performance Body & Parts. The night was sponsored by Winnebago. The pre-race ceremony was awesome to see, and the racing action was exciting all night long. The final checkered flag came out at 12:20 a.m.

This year, at each of the three stops, there was one Salute to Veterans Tour Race of Champions event. Boone Speedway had the Modifieds Race of Champions 12-lap event. Joel Rust led the first lap before "Nitro" Nick Meyer took the top spot away on lap two. Meyer, one of the first drivers to support the Salute to Veterans scheme, managed to lead the final eleven laps to take the victory. Rust, Jeremy Mills, Cody Thompson, and Jake McBirnie rounded out the top five.

The first regular feature of the night was the Carquest Auto, Truck, and Farm IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event. Austin Gray jumped out to the race lead quickly, but shortly after, the first lap was scored. Gray got a great restart as the battles behind him heated up until cautions on lap six, first for Dillon Bush off the top of turn two and then for Cory Sonner against the front-stretch wall in turn one. Gray went on to take the feature win, despite having to hold off late-race challenges from Charlie Brown. Bryan Zehm came home in third, Ben George was in fourth, and Josh May was in fifth.

Next up was the Elmquist Towing IMCA Friesen Peformance Northern SportMods 20-lap feature event. The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods ran 20 laps for their feature. Matt Avila took full advantage of starting on the pole, grabbing the top spot, and pulling away. The battles behind Avila will be hot and heavy. The first caution came out on lap six for Chris Webb and Shelby Alves in turn three. Avila again pulled away until a caution bunched the field back up on lap 13. Two more cautions came out on lap 15 and lap 19. Avila remained strong through it all and went on to take his fourth feature win. Fenske held off thirteenth-place starter Cam Reimers for second, with Reimers in third. Kirk fell back to fourth, and eleventh-place starter Colby Fett fell to fifth.

The D&E Outdoor Services IMCA Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds 30-lap feature event was up on the speedway. Hometown driver Jake McBirnie started on the pole and took full advantage; however, just after lap one was completed, the caution came out when Russ Dickerson spun in turn two, resulting in nowhere to go for Cayden Carter and Cody Thompson. McBirnie got a great restart and shot out to a full straight-away lead. McBirnie went on to take his fifth win by a lengthy margin over Tripp Gaylord, Zachary Madrid, Ethan Braaksma, and Jerry Flippo.

Jay Schmidt grabbed the top spot early in the Boone Moose Lodge 104 IMCA Stock Cars 25-lap feature event. The first caution came out on lap one for Rod Richards in turn one. Schmidt held off Michael Jaennette and Troy Jerovetz on the restart and continued to lead until Kelly Shryock took the top spot away. Shryock looked to be the first-ever three-time Salute to Veterans winner in the same year. Shryock and Schmidt battled for the race lead until lap 15. The caution came out for Jeffrey Larson in turn two on lap 15. Shryock held off Schmidt and Troy Jerovetz off-initial, but Jerovetz took the top spot on lap 17. The final caution came out on lap 21 for Johnathon Logue on the back stretch. Jerovetz held off Tyler Pickett and Jake McBirnie to capture the checkers, his first in Boone this year. Pickett came home second, McBirnie in third, eleventh-place starter Devin Smith in fourth, and twentieth-place starter David Brandies in fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 20-lap feature event. It was the only feature that went from green to checkers. Fourth-place starter Solomon Bennett took the race lead from the drop of the green, with Will Smith following in second. Battles for third place were exciting and intense. In tenth place, Dylan Nelson took the top spot away from Bennett on lap nine, using the top side. Mike Smith and Brandon Nielsen worked their way through to challenge Nelson for the lead. Mike Smith dove under Nelson for the lead on lap 17, and Nielsen followed, taking second. Nielsen tried to get by Smith on the last lap but came up short at the finish line. Smith took the win, Nielsen in second, Nelson in third, Jay Sidles and Bennett in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Next Saturday night at the Boone Speedway, the Saturday Night Weekly Racing Series continues on Elmquist Towing Night. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and IMCA Mod Lites all take to Iowa's Action Track for the Weekly Series. Kay Wins A Thriller, Gustin Claims Victory at the Dale DeFrance Memorial

It was a picture-perfect night for the 7th Annual Dale DeFrance Memorial, presented by Vinyl Cup Records. This is the third time in the history of this event that it got in on the first attempt. However, Dale was definitely present as the scoring loop was not working, resulting in no late model time trials along with reverting to hand scoring on Friday night for all classes.

Every driver saw extra money in their envelopes and extra certificates, thanks to the hard work of Judy (DeFrance) Gustin, Darrel DeFrance, Kathy Link, and Mike O'Lear. The list of sponsors is so long, but I know they appreciated everyone who helped make this event special again this year. Dale was a pioneer of racing, as he raced on the old Marshalltown Fairgrounds track before the current track was built in 1964. He raced until he supported his kids Judy and Darrel's racing and continued to support Darrel's racing, and then his grandkids racing until he passed away in 2017.

The racing action once again did not disappoint, as they were all over the racing surface and sometimes found their way off the surface. One hundred-sixty cars sign in to tame the high banks for the Dale DeFrance Memorial, and the final twin checkers waived at 11:48 p.m. The night as saw Hunt the Front Drivers Joseph Joiner and Jesse Enterkin making their first ever appearance to the high banks.

The first feature of the night was the Rugged Radios IMCA Friesen Performance Northern Sport Mods 24-lap feature event. The initial start was called back, but when the race got on the right track, Zander Keeland led the opening lap before Kansas' Eddie Ingram briefly grabbed the lead on lap two. Jenae Gustin took the top spot away on lap three prior to the caution for Keeland spinning in turn three. Gustin held off Ingram and Brayton Carter on the restart, but the caution came out again on lap four when Chris Burke spun in turn four. Gustin was determined to not be denied and again got a great restart and led until she slipped up on lap ten, allowing Ingram to regain the lead. Ingram's lead was short as he led until the caution came out on lap eleven for Hunter Smith off the top of turn two. Gustin regained the lead on the restart and held on to capture the $1,044 top prize. She was excited and in tears in victory lane, winning the race in honor of her grandpa Dale. Carter came home in second, sixteenth-place starter Cam Reimers finished third, twelfth-place starter Logan Anderson was fourth, and Ingram fell back to fifth.

Cayden Carter grabbed the early race lead in the Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 24-lap feature event. Carter pulled away until Dallon Murty found a line to his liking and was able to chip into the race lead. Dallon Murty took the spot away from Carter on lap 14. The only race caution came out on lap 17 when Jeff Mueller spun in turn two. Dallon Murty held off Cayden Carter and tenth-place starter Damon Murty, who worked his way up to third on the restart. Dallon Murty went into cruise control and went on to take the $1,044 to win the feature.. Jimmy Gustin made a hell of a run, as he was in seventh with five to go and was able to take the runner-up honors. Wisconsin's Jeff Steensbergen worked his way from twentieth to finish third, Damon Murty was fourth, and Carter fell back to fifth.

Next up was the headliner 44-lap Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series feature event for $4,544 to win. Jeff Tharp and Dave Eckrich led the field to the green flag. Eckrich took full advantage, jumping out to the race lead and building up a large lead over the rest of the field. They were going side-by-side and times 3 wide through out the field until the only caution on lap eight for Curtis Glover spinning out in turn two. Eckrich had to contend with Justin Kay and Tharp on the restart, but again, he held them off and pulled away. Kay would adventurely reel in Eckrich as Eckrich was catching lap traffic, as were JC Wyman and fifteenth-place starter Andy Eckrich. Kay made several attempts, but all were unsuccessful as Dave Eckrich held him off until the final lap. Kay tried a slider on Eckrich in turns one and two, but Eckrich crossed back over. Kay took the briefly exiting turn two, but Eckrich refused and attempted to return the favor but came up short, allowing Kay, known as "The Flyin' Farmer," to take the feature win. The win was Kay's 13th career SLMR Series victory and the first repeat winner in Motown. Dave Eckrich finished second, Andy Eckrich finished third, Wyman was fourth, and twelfth-place starter Chad Holladay finished fifth.

Jeremy Mills led the first lap of the Farley Wholesale Tire and Quick Lane IMCA Modified Summer Challenge Series presented by Mesa Muffler with track sponsor Tire Demon by Love Tap Fabrication in the 34-lap feature event. "T-Dub" Tim Ward made the pass for the top spot and never looked back, going on to take the race win worth $1,544 in the only feature that went caution-free. Ward takes over the Modified Summer Challenge Series heading into Stuart on Sunday by one point. Zack VanderBeek tried to chase him down but came up short, with Tripp Gaylord in third, points leader Tom Berry Jr. coming into Motown in fourth, and twelfth-place starter Brandon Beckendorf from Minnesota finishing fifth.

The final feature event of the night was the Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 24-lap feature event for $1,044 to win. Eric Knutson grabbed the top spot right away from his outside front row starting spot and checked out. The caution came out on lap eight, first for Brayden Fahrni in turn two and then on the restart for debris in turn four. Knutson held off eleventh-place starters Solomon Bennett and David McCalla on the restart, but a caution came out again on lap nine for Jacob Floyd in turn two. Knutson remained strong, held everybody off on the restart, and looked to be heading on to the easy win until a caution on lap 22 for Shane Richardson spinning in turn three after his right front wheel broke. Knutson hung on to take the feature win. McCalla, Calvin Dhondt, Bennett, and tenth-place starter Corey VanDerWilt rounded out the top five.

Olson finished second, Sellers was third, ninth-place starter Michael Jaennette was fourth, and Jay Schmidt was fifth.

David Brown led the first two laps of the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Friesen Performance Modifieds 20-lap feature event. "T-Dub" Tim Ward took the top spot away on lap three. Thornton finished second, Murty was third, Tripp Gaylord was fourth, and Todd Shute was in fifth.

In the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown, the IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature event. Kord Sellers led the first lap before David Kimmel took the top spot on lap two. Grady took the top spot away on lap seven from Kimmel. Kimmel had to contend with Roggentien and held him off until lap 12. Grady went on to claim his third win of the season. Roggentien, Kimmel, Jeremy Williams, and Campbell Tressler rounded out the top five.

Rust, Murty, Kuehl, Filloon, Brown, and Grady Take Thursday Night Thunder Central Iowa Fair Wins

Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway ran a night early this week, as it hosted the  KIX101.1 Thursday Night Thunder during the Central Iowa Fair. As fair-goers took a break from the fair and took in a night of high-flying dirt track racing on the high banked quarter mile, they did not leave disappointed.

There may have only been ninety-six cars checking in, but they were going two, three, and four wide throughout the night, and a few times squeezed out five wide. Leaving race fans with excitement and with it being a Thursday night, the show was so efficient that the final checkered flag was waived at 9:35 p.m.

KIX101.1 is Iowa's Best Country; they are not only your station for country music but also your station for racing. Listen to NASCAR Cup Series racing on KIX 101.1 FM. KIX 101.1 and its sister station, KFJB 1230 AM and 93.9 FM, are locally owned and operated by Trending Media. Check out KIX101.1 on social media and online at kixweb.com.

The first feature of the night was the 15-lap Knight Santiation IMCA Mod Lites feature event. Travis Stensland grabbed the top spot from the drop of the green, but shortly after one lap was scored, the caution came out for Tracen Glick spinning on the front stretch. Travis Stensland had to contend with Charlie Brown and Jeff Stensland on the restart. Brown managed to get by Travis Stensland on lap four and pull away. Both Stenslands were left to contend with tenth-place starter Jon Padilla. Padilla took second and tried to reel in Brown, but came up short. Brown took the win, Padilla was second, Travis Stensland finished third, Bryan Zehm was fourth, and Alex Eischeid was in fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the Rugged Radio IMCA Friesen Performance Northern Sport Mods 16-lap feature event, the caution came out. They tried to squeeze five wide exiting turn two, but nobody wanted to give and take, so several cars got together, resulting in Tom Lathrop going off the top of turn two and Brian Hilbert spinning in turn two. Josalyn "Jos The Boss" Elmquist led the first lap, while "Too Cool" Taylor Kuehl took the top spot on lap two. Kuehl pulled away from the field until the next caution on lap eight, when Elmquist spun on the front stretch. Kuehl held off Matt Avila and Brayton Carter on the restart and again pulled away. The caution came out one more time on lap 14, setting up a green-white-checkered finish for Ryan Leeman spinning in turn four. Kuehl was not going to be denied the victory, as she held Avila and Carter again to take her first win this season in Motown. Avila, Carter, Will Wolf, and Kyle Olson rounded out the top five.

Next up was the Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars for their $1,000 to win 20-lap feature event. "Jammer" Jimmy Gustin outwrestled "Game Changer" Dallon Murty to lead lap one, but Murty took the top spot away on lap two. Murty and Gustin continued to fight for the top spot for the next few laps before Murty was able to pull away. Just as Murty was beginning to encounter lap traffic, the caution came out on lap nine for Tom Cannon spinning in turn four. Murty again got a great restart and never looked back, going on to take his first Stock Car win in Motown this season. Jake McBirnie came home in second, Gustin fell back to third, Dylan Thornton took fourth, and eleventh-place starter "Gas Man" Cayden Carter took fifth after getting by Kaden Reynolds and Austin Kaplan.

Trevor Fitz, formally of Camarillo, California, flexed his muscles, grabbing the early lead in the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Friesen Performance Modifieds 20-lap feature. Fitz held off several challenges from David Brown before pulling away, while Joel Rust worked his way from eighth to second by lap ten. The only caution came out on lap 15 when Gat Leytham spun on the top side of turn four. Rust got the best restart and took the top spot away from Fitz. Rust went on to claim his second victory of the season. Fitz, Kyle Heckman, Todd Shute, and Brown rounded out the top five.

Kinzer Jaennette led the first three laps for the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature, before eighth-place starter Cristian Grady and Spencer Roggentien applied pressure. Grady took the top spot away on lap four; Roggentien and Jaennette battled for second until Jaennette expired from the race on lap 12. Grady took his second win of the season. Roggentien finished second, tenth-place starter James Haring got third, Michael Gardner finished fourth in a backup car, and Mark Smith was fifth.

The final feature of the night was the 16-lap Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event. Kale Hemsley led the first five laps, fending off Brad Graham and Dustin Filloon. Then the caution came out when Chad Rickett Jr. spun in turn two. Hemsley continued to lead after the restart, but that came to an abrupt end when he came to a stop, exiting turn two and collecting up Solomon Bennett, Bradly Graham, Calvin Dhondt, Eric Knutson, Ben Newhouse, and Logan Andrews. Dustin Filloon inherited the lead on the restart and received pressure from the "Ferguson Freight Train," Sam West. Filloon held on to take the feature win; he was followed by West and Corey VanDerWilt. Bradly Graham worked his way back through to finish fourth, and Brad Graham took fifth.

Thornton, Kaplan, Avila, Graham, Masengarb, and Bunch Win on Xtream by Mediacom Night in Motown

The Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown roared back to life on Friday night after taking the week off, thanks to Mother Nature. Friday night was Xtream by Mediacom Night at the Races, and fans had the option to buy a package deal and take a helicopter ride over the race track from our friends at Iron Horse Aviation.

One hundred thirty-four cars signed in to tame the high-banked quarter-mile Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway for Xtream by Mediacom Night at the races. Racing action was exciting all night long, and the final checkered flag was waived at 10:32 p.m.

Apparently, Mother Nature left some lightining damage as the lights were fixed during the afternoon to be able to race, but the PA system in both the grandstands and pits was affected as well. Those problems were not found until they were turned on last night. Unfortunately, it meant people had to listen through the MyRacePass app or watch the live stream on FloRacing.

The first feature of the night was the Knight Santiation IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event but before a single lap was scored in the books, the cautions came out when Taylor Pollock and Doug Pollock spin in turn one. Jason Masengarb grabbed the top top on the restart but fended off several challenges from Charlie Brown before pulling away ever so slightly. Brown had to contend with Cory Sonner and eleventh-place starter Joe Padilla but held them off until lap traffic slowed the top two down. Masengarb held on to take the feature win. Padilla took second away from Brown with two laps to go, Brown finished third. Sonner and thirteenth place starter Randy Bryan finished fourth and fifth respectively.

"Ricky Bobby" Mitchell Bunch out wrestled Curtis Masterson for the race lead in the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature event. Bunch pulled away from the field as the battle behind heated up between Masterson, Jeremy Williams and nineth-place starter Cristian Grady. Bunch went on to take his fourth win of the season in Motown. Grady finished second, Michael Gardner worked his way from eighth to finish third. Williams came home in fourth and tenth place starter Dyllan Bonk from Hannibal, Missouri came home in fifth.

Up next was the Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20-lap feature event. Kale Hemsley grabbed the top spot early but received constant pressure from Brad Graham. Brad Graham took the spot away briefly on lap five before he had a tire go down, forcing him to drop back; that gave the lead back to Hemsley. The caution came out shortly after when Brandon Schaer spun on the front stretch. Another caution came out on lap seven when around ten cars got together in the North 3rd Ave. Dairy Queen Turn 4. Hemsley held on to the top spot, but again another caution on lap eight for Brad Graham and Matt Nelson in turn one. Hemsley had to contend with Briar Kriegel and Eric Knutson on the restart. Knutson worked his way to the top spot on lap ten, but that was short-lived as he exited to the infield, giving back to Hemsley. Sam West, involved in the initial caution, worked his way back through and took the top spot on lap 13, but that was short-lived as he had a tire blow just past the flag stand as Bradly Graham worked his way by Hemsley for second. Bradly Graham took the top spot and held off Kriegel to take his second win in Motown. Kriegel, Hemsley, twelfth-place starter Eric Stanton, and twenty-seventh-place starter Braden Gifford rounded out the top five.

Zander Keeland led the first two laps for the Rugged Radios IMCA Friesen Performance Northern Sport Mods 16-lap feature event. Matt Avila took the top spot away on lap three and pulled away. Eddie Ingram was in a battle with Jenae Gustin and Brayton Carter behind Avila as Keeland fell back after the caution lap four when Sierra Rose Gary was in turn one. Avila pulled away again on the restart, but the caution came out again on lap seven when Nick Minar spun in turn two. One more caution came out on lap ten when Gary spun again in turn two. Avila held off Carter, Kyle Olson, Gustin, and Will Wolf to take his second win of the season in Motown. Carter, Olson, Gustin, and Wolf rounded out the top five.

The Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event was next on the speedway. Austin Kaplan jumped out to the race lead quickly and pulled away. Kaplan had a full straight away wiped away when the caution came out on lap five for Tom Cannon in turn two. The initial restart on lap five saw the caution come out when Garrett Corn spun in turn two. Kaplan held off pressure from twelfth-place starter Jeff Mueller and tenth-place starter Michael Jaennette to go on to take the feature win. Mueller finished second, Jaennette was third, Maguire DeJong finished fourth, and eleventh-place starter Jimmy Gustin came home in fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Friesen Performance Modifieds 20-lap feature event. Jacob Murray led the first eight laps before Dylan Thornton worked his way through the field. Thornton took the top spot away on lap nine and never looked back. Thornton went on to take his first win in Motown in 2024. Zack Rawlins came home in second, thirteenth-place starter Zack VanderBeek finished third, Todd Shute was fourth, and Dallon Murty was in fifth.

Next week, the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway moves up a night for KIX101.1 Thursday Night Thunder at the Central Iowa Fair, featuring $1,000 to win IMCA Stock Cars.
