The Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown roared back to life on Friday night after taking the week off, thanks to Mother Nature. Friday night was Xtream by Mediacom Night at the Races, and fans had the option to buy a package deal and take a helicopter ride over the race track from our friends at Iron Horse Aviation.
One hundred thirty-four cars signed in to tame the high-banked quarter-mile Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway for Xtream by Mediacom Night at the races. Racing action was exciting all night long, and the final checkered flag was waived at 10:32 p.m.
Apparently, Mother Nature left some lightining damage as the lights were fixed during the afternoon to be able to race, but the PA system in both the grandstands and pits was affected as well. Those problems were not found until they were turned on last night. Unfortunately, it meant people had to listen through the MyRacePass app or watch the live stream on FloRacing.
The first feature of the night was the Knight Santiation IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event but before a single lap was scored in the books, the cautions came out when Taylor Pollock and Doug Pollock spin in turn one. Jason Masengarb grabbed the top top on the restart but fended off several challenges from Charlie Brown before pulling away ever so slightly. Brown had to contend with Cory Sonner and eleventh-place starter Joe Padilla but held them off until lap traffic slowed the top two down. Masengarb held on to take the feature win. Padilla took second away from Brown with two laps to go, Brown finished third. Sonner and thirteenth place starter Randy Bryan finished fourth and fifth respectively.
"Ricky Bobby" Mitchell Bunch out wrestled Curtis Masterson for the race lead in the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature event. Bunch pulled away from the field as the battle behind heated up between Masterson, Jeremy Williams and nineth-place starter Cristian Grady. Bunch went on to take his fourth win of the season in Motown. Grady finished second, Michael Gardner worked his way from eighth to finish third. Williams came home in fourth and tenth place starter Dyllan Bonk from Hannibal, Missouri came home in fifth.
Up next was the Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20-lap feature event. Kale Hemsley grabbed the top spot early but received constant pressure from Brad Graham. Brad Graham took the spot away briefly on lap five before he had a tire go down, forcing him to drop back; that gave the lead back to Hemsley. The caution came out shortly after when Brandon Schaer spun on the front stretch. Another caution came out on lap seven when around ten cars got together in the North 3rd Ave. Dairy Queen Turn 4. Hemsley held on to the top spot, but again another caution on lap eight for Brad Graham and Matt Nelson in turn one. Hemsley had to contend with Briar Kriegel and Eric Knutson on the restart. Knutson worked his way to the top spot on lap ten, but that was short-lived as he exited to the infield, giving back to Hemsley. Sam West, involved in the initial caution, worked his way back through and took the top spot on lap 13, but that was short-lived as he had a tire blow just past the flag stand as Bradly Graham worked his way by Hemsley for second. Bradly Graham took the top spot and held off Kriegel to take his second win in Motown. Kriegel, Hemsley, twelfth-place starter Eric Stanton, and twenty-seventh-place starter Braden Gifford rounded out the top five.
Zander Keeland led the first two laps for the Rugged Radios IMCA Friesen Performance Northern Sport Mods 16-lap feature event. Matt Avila took the top spot away on lap three and pulled away. Eddie Ingram was in a battle with Jenae Gustin and Brayton Carter behind Avila as Keeland fell back after the caution lap four when Sierra Rose Gary was in turn one. Avila pulled away again on the restart, but the caution came out again on lap seven when Nick Minar spun in turn two. One more caution came out on lap ten when Gary spun again in turn two. Avila held off Carter, Kyle Olson, Gustin, and Will Wolf to take his second win of the season in Motown. Carter, Olson, Gustin, and Wolf rounded out the top five.
The Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event was next on the speedway. Austin Kaplan jumped out to the race lead quickly and pulled away. Kaplan had a full straight away wiped away when the caution came out on lap five for Tom Cannon in turn two. The initial restart on lap five saw the caution come out when Garrett Corn spun in turn two. Kaplan held off pressure from twelfth-place starter Jeff Mueller and tenth-place starter Michael Jaennette to go on to take the feature win. Mueller finished second, Jaennette was third, Maguire DeJong finished fourth, and eleventh-place starter Jimmy Gustin came home in fifth.
The final feature of the night was the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Friesen Performance Modifieds 20-lap feature event. Jacob Murray led the first eight laps before Dylan Thornton worked his way through the field. Thornton took the top spot away on lap nine and never looked back. Thornton went on to take his first win in Motown in 2024. Zack Rawlins came home in second, thirteenth-place starter Zack VanderBeek finished third, Todd Shute was fourth, and Dallon Murty was in fifth.
