One hundred and ninety-six cars signed in to Iowa's Action Track for the 2nd night of the IMCA Weekly Racing. Boone was the only track in Iowa to get racing in so far this weekend; Stuart Speedway is running Sunday (April 19th) with an ASCS Midwest Region vs. Sprint Invaders 360 Sprints show plus IMCA Weekly Racing. Back to Boone, the track was very racey all night long, so hats off to "Dirt Doctor" Rod Robbins and the crew. Several feature winners came from the midpack to claim victories.
The first feature of the night was for the Stealth Racing IMCA Mod Lites, sponsored by Carquest Auto Truck and Farm, for 15 laps. Before a lap was fully complete, the caution came out when Landon Elliott spun in turn 2. On the restart, Colby Oberembt grabbed the race lead and fended off challenges from Charlie Brown until the red flag came out before completing lap three. Charlie Brown rolled in turn four, collecting Josh May and Austin Gray. Surprisingly, Brown was able to drive back to the pits; May left on the wrecker, and Gray resumed the race. Oberembt again continued to lead and pulled away from Tracen Glick. The final caution came out on lap five when a pair of Raffurtys from Missouri, Dillon and Justin get together in turn 3. Bryan Zehm got by Oberembt on the restart and pulled away to claim the feature win. Joel Huggins and Tracen Glick also got by Oberembt to claim second and third, respectively. Oberembt is in fourth, and "The Busman" Mike Kennedy is in fifth.
Karl Kustoms IMCA Northern Sport Mods, sponsored by Elmquist Towing, an 18-lap feature event, was next up. Will and Wolf Gage Hilgenberg led the field to the green, and it was Wolf grabbing the top spot. Shortly after lap one was completed, the caution came out when Jake Sachau, Kaden Rice, and Randy Havlik spun in turns three and four. Wolf held off Hilgenberg and Ryan Leeman off the restart and checked out. Dylan Van Wyk, who started eleventh, had worked his way up to grab second on lap six and began to reel in the race leader. Van Wyk grabbed the race lead away on lap nine, and Wolf ran second until the caution came out on lap 12 for Thomas Behle in turn two. Van Wyk got a great restart, fending off Wolf and Reimers. Wolf, however, would slip off the top of the track. Van Wyk went on to take the feature win. Reimers worked his way from twelfth to second, Sachau bounced back and came back to finish third, Hunter Poston was fourth, and Tyler Heckart was fifth.
Up next were the Karl Kustoms IMCA Modifieds, sponsored by D&E Outdoor Services for their 20-lap feature. Brandon Leeman led the first lap, but it was Mesa, Arizona's Chaz Baca who took the lead away on lap two. Baca was able to pull away; Jake McBirnie worked his way in to second and Jeremy Mills into third. The first caution came out on lap six when Blaine Bryant spun in turn four. The next one, a lap later, was when Jamie Anderson spun in turn four. Baca continued to lead the way as Mills fended off McBirnie and applied pressure. Mills took the race lead away on lap nine; McBirnie also got by Baca. Mills got a sizable lead until a pair of cautions on lap 15. Robert Moore and Blaine Bryant spun in turn two, and then Colton Nelson slid off the top of turn three. Mills was determined to take victory. McBirnie, Baca, twelfth-place starter Todd Shute, and Cory Sauerman rounded out the top five.
In the Sunoco IMCA Stock Cars sponsored by Boone Moose Lodge 104, a 20-lap feature event, Garrett Corn outwrestled Jimmy Gustin for the race lead, but that was short-lived as Josh Daniels got by both of them on lap two and led the way. Gustin got by Corn and trailed Daniels for a while before applying late-race pressure as lap traffic was getting heavy. Gustin took the race lead away on lap 17 and went on to take the feature win. Daniels settled for second, Troy Jerovetz was third, twelfth place starter Braden Richards took fourth, and Corn fell back to fifth.
The final feature of the night was the Sunoco IMCA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature sponsored by Pickett's Salvage. Joey Young led the first two laps before Will Smith took the lead away. Smith looked strong out front, but the only race caution came out on lap five. The caution was for Chad Rickett Jr., Carson Butt, and Tucker Tepoel in turn three. Smith got a great restart, and despite a late race surge from Braden Gifford, nobody was going to deny Smith the win. Gifford came from tenth to finish second. Alex Yoerger was third, Corey VanDerWilt went from ninth to fourth, and Young fell back to fifth.
Saturday Night Weekly Series continues on April 25th with all 5 IMCA Divisions : Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Mod Lites. Pits open at 3:30p, Grandstands open at 4p, Hot Laps at 5p, Racing at 6p.
