Well it was back to business at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday. It started the night cloudy but the skies cleared up and allowed us to go racing we had 19 Mod Lites, 42 Sport Mods, 24 Stock Cars, 40 Modifieds and 29 Hobby Stocks sign in to race on Night #1 of the Havoc on the High Banks.
First up on the night for their feature was the Mod Lites for 15 Laps. Tim Hennigar and Charlie Brown would lead them to the green but Mike Morrill would get a good start. Hennigar would lead lap 1 but Morrill would take over the lead from Hennigar on lap 2. But just before the first 2 cautions on lap 7, Morrill would spin out but keep going but hand the lead over to Hennigar. The first race caution came out on lap 7 when Colby Obermebt and Cliff Barber both rolled their cars on the front stretch, Jason Whitehead came to a stop against Barber and the wall. On the restart it was Hennigar, Joel Huggins and Dusty Masolini as your top 3 but before they could would get going the restart would be called back bringing out another caution. Finally when they did get going Tim Hennigar would take command. Just after the race leader and the field took the white flag, Tim Sutherland spun in turn 4 bringing out the yellow and setting up a green-white-checkered which will now make this feature 16 laps. Hennigar, Huggins and Masolini still your top 3 on the restart and Hennigar would hold off the rest of the field to take the win. Huggins, Morrill, Masolini and Josh May rounded out the top 5.
IMCA Sport Mods were up next for a 20 lap feature but it would take 6 heats and 2 b-features to determine the field down to just 24 cars. When they did it was Jason Purvis taking the early race lead but Scott Davis, who started 6th was up to 2nd and made the pass for the lead on lap 3. Shortly after that the first yellow came out for Kyle Brown, Jayme Duinink, Gatlin Leytham and Cory Rose in turn 2. On the restart, Davis would have Purvis and Danny Dvorak right behind him and Davis would get a good start and pull away but then the next caution came out on lap 9 when Jason Seaverance spun in turn 2. Davis would continue to set tow , the next caution came out on lap 14 when Jared Timmerman spun in turn 3 and then the next caution was on lap 16 for a bumper on the front stretch which came from Kyle Brown's car so Brown was sent to the pits. On this restart, Davis would have Cayden Carter and Danny Dvorak on his back bumper. These three would get in a battle but Davis would hold on until lap 19 when Carter made the pass and went on to take the win. Davis was 2nd, Dvorak was 3rd, Flander was 4th and Josh Sherborn was 5th.
In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature after 3 heats and a b-feature determine the field down to just 24 cars. Rob Allison would jump to the early race lead and just after 1 lap was in the books the yellow would come out for the Calvin Dhondt spinning in turn 3 & 4. Allison would continue to set pace but then the yellow came out after 2 laps completed this time for Tony Cox spinning in turn 4. Allison would take command again but then the yellow came for Chris Hupp rolling of turn 1 &2. On the restart, Allison would have Terry Shaffar and Scott Pippert and it look as if Allison was going to take the win but Pippert would make some strong moves and got by Shaffar and then Allison on lap 10 to take over the lead. Pippert would go on to the win. Allison, Shaffar, Bill Bonnett and Corey Cruzan round out the top 5.
The IMCA Stocks 20 lap feature was up next. Matt Fox would take the race lead but it would be short lived as Mike Van Genderen would take the lead on lap 3. Van Genderen look to be pulling away while Damon Murty and Dustin Smith were charging to the front. Murty would lose ground and look to have problems but catch back up to Van Genderen and Smith. Smith would make the pass on Van Genderen on lap 11. Then after the completion of lap 11, Keith Miner would spin out in turn 4 and collect Dustin Smith, Smith kept moving but the yellow came out. Smith was awarded the lead back as he kept moving, Van Genderen restarted 2nd. Before another lap was completed, Van Genderen would experience problms, Seth Bowen would spin in turn 4. Smith would go on and take the win over Murty, Robert Stofer, Dave Atcher and Jay Schmidt.
The Final Feature of the Night was the 30 Lap JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA Modifieds. 4 heats, 2 b-features and 2 provisionals (1 HDT and 1 Marshalltown) helped determine the field for the feature. Scott Simatovich and Ron Pope would start on the front row. Simatovich would take command early, Pope would slide off the top but keep moving and came back on the race track. Simatovich would see Jon Snyder, who started 3rd start challenge for the lead. Snyder would make the pass by Simatovich. Mean while Richie Gustin was charging up to the front and made it a 3 car battle, Snyder and Gustin was now 1 and 2, Simatovich was 3rd. At lap 15, the leaders started hitting lap traffic, Snyder and Gustin was making through their fine, Simatovich had problems but was slowly getting there. Gustin would make the pass on Snyder on lap 17 though as Snyder got slowed down by a couple of lap cars. Gustin would go on and take the win in the green-to-checkered feature, Jon Snyder was 2nd. Simatovich was 3rd, Josh Gilman was 4th and Jimmy Gustin was 5th.
Racing came to an end at 11:42pm. We are back at it again on saturday if mother nature cooperates with all the classes in action plus the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks joining the fun.
