Carter, VanDerWal, Murty, Griffiths, and Chandler all Repeat Winners at SIS on KISS 101.5 Night
By Jeremy Fox
Oskaloosa, Iowa (July 24th 2013) –
Beautiful weather, temperatures with very little humidity created a
great night of racing at SIS. They were racing two, three and four wide
right off the the start of many races on KISS 101.5 Night and it
produced some great finishes.
First feature of the night was the
IMCA Sport Compacts feature and it was Kevin Kirkpatrick grabbing the
lead.Kirkpatrick slid up the race track and opened up the door for Merv
Chandler, who was driving his son Nathan’s car since his blew up on
Sunday, to sneak by for the lead. Chandler went on to take his seventh
win of the season at SIS, Kassidy Kirkpatrick got by his dad for second
as did John Whalen for third. Kevin Kirkpatrick and Bill Whalen Jr. was
fourth and fifth respectively.
Before a lap was completed the
caution waved in the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feature
when Cory Van Zante, Jason McDaniel and Eric Flander got together in
turn one. When the race finally got rolling it ran green-to-checkered.
“Speedy Bray” Brayton Carter grab the early lead until track point
leader Curtis VanDerWal, who made his way through the field from his
ninth place starting position, grabbed the lead away on lap five.
VanDerWal went on to take his seventh win of the season. Carter
VanDenBerg finish second, Brett Lowry was third, Brad Iverson was fourth
and Eric Flander was fifth.
Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks
feature also saw a caution before one lap was completed when Travis
Bunnell and Dale Porter got together in turn one. On the restart it was
Bobby Greene jumping to the early lead and he appeared to be going on to
the win until the caution waved again on lap seven. Greene got a slow
but good restart and was able to hold on until the caution waved when
Aaron Osweiler and Gina Greubel got together in turn four on lap twelve.
This time on the restart, Greene didn’t have a very good one as Dustin
Griffiths and Bill Bonnett got by and they race wheel-to-wheel the last
three laps with Griffiths taking his fourth of the season and second in a
row at SIS. Bill Bonnett finish second, Bobby Greene came across in
third but was disqualified in post-race tech inspection for illegal
carburetor that moved Justin Hook to third. Jason See to fourth and
Steve Allen to fifith.
Bill Davis Jr. grabbed the lead in the
Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature and it appeared he was going to
take the win in the feature that went green-to-checkered. “The Gasman”
Cayden Carter made his way by Randy Havlik on lap fourteen and then set
his sights on Davis and Carter made the pass on the final lap. For
Carter it was his second win of the season at his hometown track. Davis
settled for runner up position with Havlik, Brandon Banks and Jacob
Murray rounding out the top 5.
Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars saw
“From Across the Street” Corey Stout grabbing the lead on the opening
lap but it was Brad Pinkerton grabbing the lead on lap two and looking
to finish right where he left off the week before. The caution waved on
lap five when Jason Cook had something break in the front end of his car
and forcing him to a stop on the front stretch. This allowed Damon
Murty and Todd Reitzler to grab the top spot away from Pinkerton,
Pinkerton exited to the pit area on lap seven. Meanwhile Murty and
Reitzler battled it out for the lead with each taking turns, Murty lead
laps six through nine, Reitzler edged ahead on lap ten and Murty on lap
eleven. Reitzler grabbed the lead back on lap twelve and held on until
coming to the white flag when Murty snuck back by. Murty took his third
win at SIS. Reitzler, Donavon Nunnikhoven, Stout and Kris Walker rounded
out the top 5.
Final feature of the night was the Iowa
Sportsman Series 15 lap feature and it was Paul Meinres leading the
first lap but just before the completion of lap two, Meinres made heavy
contact with the wall in the exit of turn four. That handed the lead
over to Gene Tish, Tish went on to lead the remaining laps to pick up
another Sportsman Series win at SIS. Darin Van Dee, Travis Dawson, Denny
Binns and Chad Reynolds finish second through fifth respectively.
Next week will be 1st Community Credit Union Night at the Southern Iowa Speedway with Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
Then
the following week the speedway will host the Front Row Challenge
featuring NASCAR Driver Tony Stewart and the Ultimate Challenge on
Monday and Tuesday August 5th and 6th as part of the Southern Iowa
Speedway. Because of that the Speedway will take a hiatus that Wednesday
and then the following week for the State Fair before racing returns
August 21st.
