Irvine, Cordes, Wacha, Gustin and Ackerman Take Checkers at Indee

Another Saturday off where i did not have to work at a race track so the original plan was to attend the races at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City. However mother nature had different plans this week as a lot of rain was dumped across the state of iowa forcing rivers to rise and cause minor flooding. The infield was covered in water Saturday Morning so Track Manager Jason Van Sickel and the Hamilton County Fairboard decided to pull the plug.

So that again left my Saturday Night free so i made my choices to go watch races at the Boone Speedway or the Independence Motor Speedway. After i got an invitiation from Track Announcer/Race Director and for one race last night the honorary starter Ryan Clark i decided to make the 1.5 hour drive to Indee for Karsyn's Krusaders and Three Wide Media Night. I was glad i did because there was great racing all night and the track was in great shape thanks to Track Prep Expert Don Burkey.

The First feature of the night was IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap event. After having its initial start called back it was Jason Hocken taking the early lead but that was short lived as the caution came out three times on lap four. First time for Justin Temeyer in turn two and the second time for a handful of cars in turn three. The final lap four caution was for Aaron Matthias, Tim Helle, Bob Ahrendsen and Phil Holtz in turn three. On the first two restarts, Hocken continued to lead but on the third restart he lost the lead to Phil Holtz. Hocken spun in turn three collecting Justin Hanson, Russell Damme and Adam Gebel. Holtz saw a driver from nearby Oelwein by the name of Brian Irvine take the lead. Irvine would not look back and go on to take his second win of the season at Indee despite a couple of more cautions on lap six and ten. Jarod Weepie, Holtz, Norman Chesmore and Temeyer rounded out the top five.

The Initial start of the 20 lap Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds feature was called back. On the restart, it was third place starter Ed Thomas grabbed the early lead. The caution came out on lap three for Patrick Flannagan in turns three and four. Josh Sherbon and Brennen Chipp was on Thoma's back side but remained out front on lap four. Right after the completion of lap four the caution came out on lap four for Josh Barta in turn three. This time, Thomas saw 11th place starter Troy Cordes sneak by for the lead on lap five. On lap seven, the caution came out when Ronn Lauritzen spun inside turn four. Cordes manage to lead the remaining laps to take his first win of the season at Indee.  Fifth row starters J D Auringer and Tyler Droste finish second and third respectively. Thomas settled in to fourth and Sherbon in fifth.

Before a lap was completed in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature but this time actually for four cars getting together in turns three and four. When the race finally got going it was Chad Albert taking the lead but on lap four it was Jim Ball taking it away. The only other race caution came out two laps later, on lap six for debris on the backstretch. Ball continued to lead meanwhile Benji Irvine worked his way from ninth place starting position up to take the lead away on lap nine. Irvine appeared to be heading on to the win but lap traffic started to slow him down and that allowed Justin Wacha to chase down. Irvine and Wacha race side by side the last three laps and it would be Wacha beating Irvine to the line to take the win. Jeremiah Wilson was 3rd, Leah Wroten was 4th and Ball was 5th.

Lucas Lundry lead the first lap in the 15 lap IMCA Sport Mod feature event but the caution came out shortly after for debris in turn two. Lundry got a great restart only to have it wiped away when the caution came out again this time when Kyle Bentley experienced troubles infortunately Colby Heishman made contact and hit him in the right side. Lundry again got a great restart and began to pull away and appeared to be heading toward his first win of the season at Indee but ninth place starter Jenae Gustin worked her way up and began a wheel to wheel battle for the lead. Gustin finally took the lead away and went on to take her fifth win of the season at Indee meanwhile Lundry came home in second. Jim Aschenbrenner, 15th place starter Alex Zwanziger and Matt McCahen round out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Late Models feature. Rookie Sean Johnson took full advantage of his outside front row starting spot by taking the lead. Johnson appeared to be heading on to the win but the caution came out on lap 13 for John Emerson spinning on the front stretch. Johnson continued to lead until  Darren Ackerman worked his way up to battle for the lead. Ackerman took the lead on laps 17 and 18 with Johnson again on lap 19. Finally the leaders were able to get through lap traffic and Ackerman went back on by Johnson to take the win. Jon Passick, Luke Pestka and Bobby Hansen was third through fifth respectively.

Races were completed at 9:51pm and after visting with a few friends in the pits after the races i got home around 12:15 am. Thanks to Ryan Clark and the staff at the Independence Motor Speedway with getting the show over at a decent time.

Kudos goes out to Jessica and Andy Miller of Karsyn's Krusaders for their great support towards cancer surivors by picking honorary starters.

Those honorary Starters were:
Hobby Stock: Ryan Clark, in memory of his father, Dwayne Burkey. Dwayne was a driver and long time race fan. Lung cancer took his life on 5/15/11, just 3 weeks after his first visit to the hospital.

Stock Car: Emmale Schnelle, age 11, was diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer in July 2013. After treatment, surgery, and a skin graft at Mayo Clinic, she is proud to say that she Kicked Cancer's Butt!

Sport Mod: Harry Snyder (a/k/a OHB), an engine builder, long time race fan, and father of a drivers racing tonight: Jason, Tony, and Chris Snyder, was diagnosed March 2013, and is currently "Kickin' Esophageal Cancer's Butt".

Modified: Gary Wilgenbusch, CPA and Karsyn's Krusaders treasurer, is throwing the green flag tonight in memory of his mother who passed away from liver cancer when she was just 45 years old.

Late Model: Julie O'Connor with 3 Wide Media, and a strong supporter of Karsyn's Krusaders is starting our late model feature in memory of Brady Dove, the son of Byron and Laura Dove of New Hartford, who will be in the stands tonight. Brady was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in 2001 at just 2 years old. After multiple rounds of chemo, radiation, and a stem cell transplant, the cancer went into remission. Sixteen months later, Brady relapsed and passed away in 2004 at just 5 years old.
