Last Saturday, I made the decision since I went to the Brooklyn Raceway for a second night of racing during their Spring Nationals, This Saturday I would make my first visit to the Boone Speedway in 2018.
161 cars signed in for the second weekly points race at the Boone Speedway with 37 Modifieds, 31 Stock Cars, 28 Sport Mods, 34 Hobby Stocks, 19 Mod Lites and 12 Sprint Cars. Ricky Thornton, Johnny Spaw, Austin Luellen, Andrew Burg, Travis Stensland and Mike Moore all took feature wins.
First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. Charlie Brown led the opening lap before Bryan Zehm took the top spot away on lap two with a slider on Brown. Travis Stensland followed suit and began to chase down Zehm. Stensland was able to make the pass for the lead on lap six. Stensland went on to lead the remaining laps to take the win and Zehm ran second. Randy Bryan finished third, Joe Glick was fourth and Mike Morrill was fifth.
It was the IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature event up next and it was Doug Smith taking the lead on lap one. Just after the lap was scored the caution came out for Nate Albrant spinning in turn three. Smith had Johnathan Logue and Tyler Inman on his back bumper on the restart but Smith got a great restart however just after lap two was scored the caution came out when Inman and Cam Reimers spun in turn two. Smith again got a great restart and began to pull away until the next caution came out on lap seven for Brandon Coffman in turn two. Logue finally able to stay close to Smith and manage to take the top spot away on lap 11 but a lap later the caution came out for Daniel Tasler in turn four. Logue and Smith continued to battle it until Austin Luellen added his name to the fight just before a pair of cautions on lap 15. Luellen took the lead away on lap 17 and held off Smith and Logue for the win. Jake McBirnie and Hunter Longnecker rounded out the top five.
Making their debut in the 2018 season at the Boone Speedway was the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars for their 18 lap feature event. Before a single lap was scored the caution came out when Devin Wignall and Frank Rodgers got together in turn two. Brandon Allen took the early lead and led until Defending Track Champion Mike Moore took the top spot away on lap 11. The caution came out on lap 15 for C.J. Houseman in turn two and then again on lap 17 for Trevor Serbus in turn four. Moore was not going to be denied the win on his birthday as he went on to take the win. Tyler Thompson, C.J. Houseman, Wignall and Joel Thorpe finished second through fifth.
Ty Hill spun in turn two bring out the caution before a single lap scored in the 18 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature event. Michael Murphy took the lead lap one but Wayne Gifford took the top spot on lap two. Murphy did not give up as he took the lead back on lap three. Gifford also didn't give up because he took the top spot away on lap eight. Gifford looked to be heading on to take the win until tenth place starter Johnny Spaw worked his way through the field. Spaw took the lead away on lap 15 and would go on to take the win ahead of Gifford. Troy Jerovetz, Murphy and Donavon Smith all finished top five.
Eric Elliott led the first six laps for the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event before Ricky Thornton Jr. worked his way from the ninth starting spot to take the lead away on lap seven. Tenth place starter Tim Ward followed his way through and chase down Thornton to begin and epic battle for the top spot. Ward would deliver a White Castle Slider and take the top spot away on lap 19 but Thornton returned the favor in the same fashion on the last lap. Thornton cut the line off on Ward in turn four to head on and take the win. Ward was second ahead of Elliott, Josh Gilman and Josh Most.
Final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature event and it was Daniel Smith leading the first seven laps. Smith saw 10th place starter Andrew Burg take the top spot away on lap eight. Burg went on to take the win, Dylan Nelson got by Smith for second. Adam Ayers was fourth and Ryan Wells was fifth.
