With all the mid week rain, the Hancock County Speedway in Britt was again forced to cancel its season opener another week. The plan is to start the 24th season of racing at the 4/10 mile dirt track next Friday Night with ShowRoom 32 Auto Detailing and Secory Plumbing & Heating Season Opener. Also the rescheduled Britt Chamber's Race Day on Main will take place on May 11th from 3-5 pm including several actitives for the fans and race cars will be on displayed with Best in Show.
So with the cancellation at Britt, that meant another night of racing at the Marshalltown Speedway was going to be in store which happened to be the Cliff Chambers Memorial presented by UAW Local 893 and Old Timers Lounge. 126 cars signed in to take to the high-banked quarter mile oval with 21 Hobby Stocks, 30 Sport Mods, 10 Late Models, 28 Modifieds, 18 Stock Cars and 17 Mod Lites. Dylan Nelson, Ethan Braaksma, Ben Seeman, Tim Ward and Jeff Mueller all become first time winners at Marshalltown in 2018 meanwhile Randy Bryan repeats in the Mod Lites.
First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 15 lap feature event and it was "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins taking the lead. Huggins looked comfortable out from after fending off Joe Glick, Jeff Stensland and Travis Stensland early. The only race caution came out on lap nine when Larry Sorenson spun at the exit of turn four into the grass just off the front stretch. Huggins had Glick and Randy Bryan on his back bumper on the restart but Huggins continued to lead until Bryan made the right move and took it away on lap 13. Bryan held off Huggins to take his second win of the season. Huggins, Glick, Zehm and Charlie Brown finish second through fifth respecitvely.
The IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature saw Travis Peterson jump out to the early lead however the caution came out lap one when Hunter Longnecker spun in the bottom side of turns three and four. Peterson got a great restart and led until lap ten when Ethan Braaksma took the lead away. Braaksma pulled away and went on to take the win. Jared Van Deest worked his way to a second place finish, Doug Smith was third, Austin Luellen moved up seven spots to finish fourth and Peterson fell back to finish fifth.
Before a single lap was scored in the 15 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event the caution came out for Matt Smith going off the top side of turns one and two. When the race got going it was Dylan Nelson taking the top spot but just after lap two, the caution came out again for Shannon Anderson in turn four after he blew a left rear tire. Nelson was not going to be denied as he fought off several different challengers to take his first career win. Eric Knutson worked his way to the runner up spot on lap six and ran their the rest of the way. David Rieks moved up 11 spots to finish third, Eugene Nicklas moved up eight spots to finish fourth and Leah Wroten finished fifth.
Todd Inman and Scott Rice led the field to the green in the 20 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature. Inman took the early lead but it was Jeff Mueller working the top side deciding to go to the bottom side on lap seven. Mueller took the lead way and just after the lap was scored the caution came out on lap seven for Rice going off the top side of turn four. Mueller and the field saw the caution again on lap eight, not once but twice, first for debris on the front-stretch and then for Kyle Everts and Michael Jaennette getting together in turn two. Mueller got a great restart and pulled away to take the win ahead of Damon Murty, Tyler Pickett, Paul Shepard and Todd Reitzler.
Ben Seeman led all 20 laps of the IMCA Late Models feature event. Todd Cooney got by Hometown Boy Darrel DeFrance on lap 16 and came across the line in second. DeFrance was third, Richie Gustin Jr. was fourth and Kyle Krampe came home in the number fifth spot.
Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature and it started out a little rough as the caution came out before a lap was completed when Kyle Brown spun in turn four forcing Andy Tiernan to make an quick decision to spin out avoiding contact. Rookie Josh May jumped out to the race lead ahead of Racer Hulin on the restart, as they were going three and four wide. May looked like a veteran making the top side work fending off Hulin and Nick Roberts until lap seven when Roberts nabbed the race lead. Roberts led until lap 15 when Tim Ward took the lead way. Ward was only slowed by heavy lap traffic late but went on to the easy race win. Roberts, Joel Rust, Ricky Thornton and May rounded out the top five.
Next week the Marshalltown Speedway will race on Thursday Night because of the High School Rodeo taking over the Central Iowa Fairgrounds. Thursday Night's Races will be the Dale DeFrance "Thursday Night Thunder" Memorial Race and the IMCA Late Models will be a 44 Lap feature with the top prize of $1,500 to win and $200 to start.
