Last minute decision on where to go for Saturday Night Races led me heading to Boone Speedway once again for some racing action for what was being called the Cinco De Mayo Mod Madness. It is one of four Super Saturdays presented by IMCA.TV with the Modifieds racing for at least $1,000 to win and a guaranteed spot in the Super Nationals Prelude. IMCA Hobby Stocks got their chance at some extra cash as they were $500 to win.
Now more on the Modifieds, they ran four heat races (8 laps) with all drivers advancing to 2 A Main Qualifers (15 laps) for $500 to win and then the top 12 from the qualifers advancing to the A Main for $1,000 top prize. So If you won the qualifer and A-Main $1,500 to win......5th place starter in the A Main if they won could get $500 on top of the win prize money so if you won a qualifer, A-Main and started 5th you could walk with $2,000.
A total of 160 cars signed in to "Iowa's Action Track" Boone Speedway including 39 Modifieds, 31 Stock Cars, 32 Sport Mods, 29 Hobby Stocks, 18 Mod Lites and 11 Sprint Cars.
After all the heat races and b-features in all classes it was time for the Modified A Main Qualifers. In the first qualifer, the moral of the story was cautions but when the racing action happened it was a good battle up front for the lead. Richie Gustin, Jimmy Gustin, Kelly Shryock and Josh Truman was battling for the top spot but it was "G-Money" Richie Gustin taking the lead. Richie Gustin led the first 8 laps before he left the door open and Shryock pounced on the chance to take the top spot on lap nine. Shryock knew that Gustin was not going to give up and that was true as Gustin made the move and edged out Shryock at the line. Jimmy Gustin got third, Scott Hogan was fourth and Nick Roberts was 5th.
In the second Modified qualifer, this one saw Russ Dickerson nabbed the top spot early. Kyle Brown saw the door open on lap four and took the lead away. Brown's lead was short lived as the "Flyin' Dutchman" Mike VanGenderen took the top spot away on lap seven. VanGenderen appeared to be heading on to take the win but "T-Dub" Tim Ward was working the top side of the speedway and chased down VanGenderen. Those two dragged race to the line and it was Ward edging out VanGenderen by bumper at the line. Jeremy Mills, Dickerson and Tyler Prochaska rounded out the top five.
It was now time for the 15 lap Mod Lites feature event. Tannor Gannon started third but by the end of lap one, he was the captain of the ship. Gannon led until lap three when "Dry Slick" Joe Glick took the top spot away on lap four. Three laps later on lap seven, the caution came out when Gannon was spun by Bryan Zehm and Randy Bryan came to a stop avoiding contact. Glick got a great restart and late race lap traffic didn't slow him down as he went on to take the win. "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins finished second, Travis Stensland was third, Justin Rankin was fourth and Bryan worked his way back up to finish fifth.
Up next was the 18 lap Elmquist Towing IMCA Sport Mods feature event. Tyler Inman took full advantage of his pole position starting spot by grabbing the race lead. Inman was slowed early by a caution on lap three for Blair Simmons in turn three and then again on lap six for Thomas Egenberger and Dustin Lynch in turns three and four. Inman got a great restart despite having Doug Smith and Chad Ryerson on his back bumper but Inman was able to keep his cool with lap traffic late and went on to take the feature win. Ryerson got by Smith for second putting Smith in third. Cory Rose and Johnathon Logue was fourth and fifth.
RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Cars 20 lap feature saw Mike Houseman jumped out to the race lead and man did he as he pulled away from the field. The caution came out on lap three when CJ Houseman spun in turn four and then on the restart when Val Urman spun in turn two. Houseman got a great restart and pulled away again but the caution came out again on lap eight for Mike Moore in turn four. Houseman saw the caution come again on lap 13 for Urman in turn two again but Houseman was not going to be denied the win as he crossed the line in commanding fashion. Devin Wignall finished a distance second ahead of CJ Houseman. Mike Johnston and Mike Moore.
Jeff Mueller taking off right where he left off on Friday Night at Marshalltown by grabbing the lead early in the Arnold Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event. Mueller looked comfortable out front until the caution came out on lap six for Corey Piffer and Donavon Smith spin in turns three and four. Mueller got a great restart and began to pull away until Trent Murphy worked his way to the number two spot on lap 11. Murphy chase down Mueller and took the lead on lap 17 but Mueller was able to get back by when Murphy about flipped over in turn two when a right front tire blew out. Mueller motored home to the win, Robert Stofer took second ahead of Murphy. Kevin Opheim and "Hot" Rod Richards finish fifth.
Tim Ward and Jimmy Gustin redrew the front row in the Snap on Tools by BSNB Sales IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature event and 5th place starter would be Richie Gustin. Ward nabbed the race lead early but the caution came out on lap two when Nick Roberts, Tyler Prochaska, Nick Meyer, Tony Hilgenberg and Tony Cox got together in turns three and four. Ward had Kelly Shryock and Richie Gustin on his back side on the restart but he was able to fend them off until Richie Gustin moved in to second. Richie Gustin then took the top spot away on lap six. Two laps later on lap eight the caution came out again for Ben Kraus in turn two. Richie Gustin got a great restart and tried to pull away but never actually pulled away and then the caution came out on lap 17 for Tony Cox in turn four. Gustin continued to lead until lap 22 when Ricky Thornton Jr. worked his way through the field from his 11th place starting spot to take the lead. Thornton went on to take the win with Richie Gustin, Shryock, Ward and Van Genderen rounding out the top five.
Final feature of then night was the 15 lap $500 to win Pickett Auto Salvage IMCA Hobby Stock feature. "Mad Hatter" Justin Wacha took the race lead early but the caution came out on lap three for Shane Butler, Andrew Burg and Nicholas Foster in turn two. Wacha and the field saw the caution come out again on lap five for debris in turn three and for Todd Bass and Jamie Coady in turn two. Wacha held the top spot despite Adam Ayers and Aaron Rudolph trying to get by until lap eight when Wacha left the right lane open and Rudolph took the lead away. Rudolph continued to lead until the caution on lap 11 for David McQuiston, Kevin Derry and Adam Tiernan getting together. On the restart, Rudolph had to contend with 22nd place starter Dylan Nelson, who worked his way in to the second spot. Nelson took the lead away on lap 13 and would cruise on to the win, his second in back-to-back nights as he picked up the win on Friday at Marshalltown. Rudolph, Wacha, Keith Burg and Ayers finished second through fifth.
Next Saturday Night at Boone will be Safety Night with racing in all six divisions. A reminder the month of May continues with early starting times, meaning hot laps at 5:45 and racing at 6:30.
