Richie Gustin Claims Dirt Knights Season Opener in MoTown

After having the first two races scheduled on the Arnold Motor Supply Dirt Knights Tour sponsored by Wehrs Machine at Sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge on May 21st and Benton County Speedway in Vinton on May 27th fall victim to mother nature that meant MoTown was going to be the opener.

A Beautiful night for racing as ninety-three cars signed in to Marshalltown Speedway ready to tame the high-banked quarter mile. Thirty-Six IMCA Modifieds, Sixteen IMCA Late Models, Fifteen IMCA Hobby Stocks, Fourteen IMCA Sport Mods and Twelve IMCA Stock Cars. All Classes used a draw-redraw format except the Modifieds which you a passing points system through the heat races to determine the starting lineup.

The headliner was the Arnold Motor Supply Dirt Knights Tour for IMCA Modifieds 30 lap feature event. Tim Ward jumped out to the early race lead from his outside front row starting spot despite several challenges from fourth place starter Richie Gustin. Ward and Gustin battled hard and clean until a caution came out on lap four when Jacob Hobscheidt spun exiting turn four. Ward had to deal with brothers Richie and Jimmy Gustin on the restart but held them off until lap eight when Richie Gustin made the right move and grabbed the top spot away just before a caution came out for Cayden Carter coming to a stop in turn three.

Richie Gustin and Joel Rust began to battle for the top spot with Gustin hanging on to the top spot. The final caution came out on lap 13 for Jeff Larson in turn two. Gustin got a great restart and began to pull away from Rust and Jordan Grabouski. Only thing that slowed "G-Money" the last seventeen laps was lap traffic. Richie Gustin went on to take season opening win for the Dirt Knights Tour.  Grabouski took the second spot away on lap 26 from Rust, Grabouski finished second and Rust in third. Fourteenth place starter Ricky Thornton Jr moved up ten spots to finish fourth and Ward slipped back to fifth.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, Kaden Reynolds and Shannon Anderson battled it out for the early race lead. Reynolds driving Leah Wroten's backup car saw Anderson wrestle the lead away but he did not go away. The caution came out on lap four when Luke Bird got sideways in turn one, Craig Lovig had no where to go and hit Bird hard which caused him to flip upside down. Anderson got a great restart meanwhile Reynolds saw Dylan Nelson power by on the outside to claim the second spot. The final caution came out on lap 13 for Zach Hovell on the backstretch exiting turn two. Anderson held off the challenges from Nelson on the restart to take the win. Nelson settled for second, Reynolds was third, Leah Wroten was fourth and Gary Pfantz was fifth.

Kyle Olson and Cam Reimers started on the front row in the IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event. Olson took the early lead until the caution came out on lap 3 for Hunter Mcwhirter spinning in turn two. The caution came out on the restart when Ryan King, Thomas Egenberger and Ronnie Hults got together in turn one while Chance Titus and Mcwhirter got together in turn two. Carter was able get a great restart but saw a caution come out again on lap 16 for Cam Reimers and Josh Foster getting together in turn two. Carter was Speedy the last four laps as he ended up heading to victory lane ahead of Jake McBirnie, Dylan VanWyk, Olson and Foster.

The Class Too Tough too Tame IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature went green to checkered. Austin Even led the first three laps before eighth place starter Damon Murty worked his way up to second. Murty took the lead away on lap four and never looked back going on to take the win. Jordan Grabouski tried to chase him down but settled for second. Todd Reitzler moved up four spots from seventh to finish third. Curt Hook finished fourth and Even fell back to fifth.

Jeremiah Hurst led from start to finish in the IMCA Late Models 25 lap feature, that also went caution free. Hurst had intense battle with Jeff Aikey in the early going but was able to put a few lap cars in between them to take the win. Aikey finished in second, Justin Kay moved up three spots to finish third. Andy Eckrich also moved up three spots to finish fourth. Thirteenth place starter Darrel DeFrance, after missing his heat race, came home with a fifth place finish.

Racing action started right at 7:30 pm with the final checkered flag was displayed at 9:56pm sending drivers and fans home at a decent time on a work night.
