Marshalltown Speedway Opens with a Full Moon on Old Timers Lounge Night

The Marshalltown Speedway finally roared to life for the 2020 season as One Hundred Fourty One Cars signed in to race the high banked quarter mile race track. The race track was dry slick and fast, by feature time produced exciting racing action in front of full moon. Old Timers Lounge was the Nights sponsor and for the people not able to be in person was able to watch on Speed Shift TV. Final checkered flag was displayed at 10:45pm.

MADCRA Mod Lites saw twenty three cars check in with all of them making the call for the 15 lap feature event. Kaden Cochrun led the opening lap. Shortly after the red flag came out when Travis Messamer ended up on his side in turn four after clipping an infield tire. Bryan Zehm took the lead away on the restart and never looked back heading on to take the opening night win. Joe Glick moved up three spots to finish second and thirteenth place starter Charlie Brown finished third. Randy Bryan and Jonathan Braathun rounded out the top five.

Austin Kaplan and Chad Ryerson led the field of twenty five IMCA Sport Mods to the green flag in their 18 lap feature event. Kaplan jumped out to the race lead and Brayton Carter followed suit in second. Kaplan led all 18 laps green-to-checkered to taking the opening night win in his Days of Thunder Cole Trickle car. Carter held off Johnathon Logue for second, Logue took third. Jenae Gustin debuting a tribute car to her Grandpa Dale DeFrance came home in fourth and Young Hot Shoe Maguire DeJong finished fifth.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks, twenty-eight cars checked in after ther field was set it was time for their 15 lap feature. Before a lap was completely scored the caution came out when Luke Bird spun on the front stretch meanwhile Bill Bonnett was sent to the tail for jumping the start. Dylan Nelson jumped to the race lead from his outside front row starting spot and continued to lead until lap seven, when his right rear tire went flat forcing him to head to the pits. Tom Killen Jr inherited the lead but Killen entered in a battle with Kaden Reynolds. Reynolds was working the high side and Killen in the middle, Reynolds grabbed the lead away on lap 11. The caution came out on lap 12 when Scott Ellis spun in turn four and Joey Hughes would make contact. Reynolds led the remaining laps and go on to take the win. Killen, Solomon Bennett, thirteenth place starter Aaron Rudolph and Dustin Filloon finished second through fifth.

Normally the IMCA Stock Cars are the Class Too Tough Too Tame and in a way, you could say that as the caution came out twice before a single lap was completely scored. First caution was for Tobie Talk, Austin Gray and Donnie Pearson in turn four. Talk spun again on the restart, this time in turn two forcing another caution. Damon Murty started third but by the end of lap one, he was the man in the lead however the caution came out again when Kellie Drury spun in turn two and Leah Wroten spun on the frontstretch. Damon Murty, after holding of challenges from his son Dallon Murty.

Jeff Mueller took the lead away on the bottom side from Damon Murty on lap five and pulled away momentarily before Damon Murty and Dallon Murty reeled him back in just before the caution came out when Tyler Carey spun in turn four on lap 11. Damon Murty took the lead away on lap 12 and two laps later the final race caution came out for Donnie Pearson off the top turn two. Damon Murty and Steve Meyer battled it out with Murty holding the top spot until the checkered flag when Meyer crossed the line in first. Damon Murty finished second, Mueller was third, Jay Schmidt was fourth and Dallon Murty was fifth.

Only eight IMCA Late Models checked in so the feature was reduced to 15 laps. Youngster from Independence Logan Duffy led the entire distance to take his first win of the season. Curtis Glover ran second the entire way. Luke Pestka got by Birthday Boy Darrel DeFrance on lap six to nab third, DeFrance was fourth. Dalton Simonsen was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lapper, Jake McBirnie led the first lap before Newburg, North Dakota's Tom Berry took the top spot away on lap two. Berry pulled away until the caution came out on lap six when Zack Rawlins spun in turn four. Berry got a great restart and went and would not let the heavy late race lap traffic slow him down. Berry went on to cruise to win by a full straightaway over Jeff Aikey, McBirnie, Joel Rust and Tim Ward.

Racing action resumes on Tuesday June 9th at Marshalltown Speedway with the Dale DeFrance Memorial. It will be the 500th Deery Brothers Summer Series Race and the Ironman Darrel DeFrance will be honored.
