Friday Night was picture perfect with few clouds in the sky for Vessco Inc. Highbanks After the Creek Night at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway. The night featured the Dirt Crown Stock Car Summer Series presented by Mel Hambelton Racing for IMCA Stock Cars, as they raced for a top prize of $2,000 to win.
One hundred-forty nine cars checked in to tame the high bank quarter mile dirt oval including 35 IMCA Stock Cars. The racing action was heated all night and did not disappoint those in attendance. The racing went green at 7:30p and the final checkered flag came out at 11:17pm.
First feature of the night was the Outlaw Mini Mods presented by Drury Automotive and Truck Repair 12 lap event. Lucas Daniels led the first lap but the defending champion and current point leader Ben Kraus took the top spot away on lap two. Kraus pulled away as a trio of Daniels (Lucas, Bobby and Chase) for position. They managed to go green-to-checkered with Kraus taking his eight win of the season in the Outlaw Mini Mods. Chase Daniels came home second, Matthew Grobe was able to work his way from ninth to finish third. Lucas Daniels fell back to fourth and Nathan Kilwine was fifth.
Next on the speedway was the Knight Sanitation IMCA Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. David Bailey jumped out to the race lead but shortly after lap one was scored the caution came out when Mike Morrow spun in turn three to avoid Scott Bailey, who was exiting the racing surface. David Bailey was able to hang on to the race lead until Jason Masengarb took the race lead away on lap five. The caution came out shortly after when Tiffani Dominguez came to a stop on the back stretch. Masengarb had to content with ninth place starter Jon Padilla and tenth place starter Josh May on the restart, Padilla would take the top spot away on lap seven. The final caution came out on lap eight when Brittani Dominguez came to a stop in turn three. Padilla got a great restart and got just enough gap to claim the win. May was second, Masengarb was third, Alex Eischeid in fourth and eleventh place starter Randy Bryan was fifth.
After the initial start called off in the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event and caution on the restart it was Braden Gifford taking the early race lead. Gifford led until coming to complete lap three, he spun in turn four resulting in nowhere to go for Gary Pfantz and Jake Nelson. That handed the lead over to Sam West on the following restart. West hit his marks and looked to be taking the win until the caution came out on lap 11 when 3 cars spun on the front stretch. West got a great restart and tried to pull away but the caution came out again on lap 15 when Derrick McNeece spun in turn four. West had to contend with Eric Stanton and Calvin Dhondt on the restart with Dhondt taking the race lead away on lap 16. A lap later the red flag came out when Dhondt flipped upside down on the front stretch after making contact with Eric Stanton, Dhondt was able to climb from the car. Dustin Filloon, Brett Maasdam, Chris Hupp, Bradly Graham, Zach McNeese and Solomon Bennett also suffered damage from the incident. West inherited the lead again and this time he was not going to be denied his second win of the season in Motown. "Lynnville Lightening" Corey VanDerWilt, Darin DeZwarte, Rick Kriegel and Derrick McNeece rounded the top five. Mitchell Thomas and Andy Peck was the last two cars to finish the race.
Before a single lap was completed in the Rugged Radios IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event, the caution came out when Josalyn Elmqust, Kaden Besaw and Trevor Tanner spun in turn one. On the restart, Jenae Gustin driving Jason Pansegrau's car again grabbed the race lead. Gustin received pressure from Brady Hilmer and Matt Avila until the caution came out again on lap two when Besaw, Shane Palmer, Tanner and Curt Hilmer on the front stretch. Gustin was not going to be denied as she pulled away and went on to take the feature win, her third win of the year. Brady Hilmer was second, Avila was third, twelfth place starter Brayton Carter was fourth and Travis Peterson was fifth.
In the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 30 lap feature for the Dirt Crown Summer Series presented by Mel Hambelton Racing, it was Jake McBirnie grabbed the race lead early. McBirnie held off Damon Murty before getting a little separation until the caution came out on lap ten when Micheal Smith spun in turn two. McBirnie held off Murty and Kaden Reynolds on the restart and once again pulled away just a bit only to see the caution come out on lap 17 for debris in turn four. McBirnie flexed his muscled on the restart again and then saw cautions on lap 21 and 23. For McBirnie, you had to wonder if Murty was going to take the top spot away but instead McBirnie held tough again. The final caution came out when Chanse Hollatz went off the top of turn three resulting the caution coming out. McBirnie held on to take the $2,000 feature win and make his way to the Conklin Vehicle Products Victory Lane. Murty, Reynolds, Troy Jerovetz and Jim Horejsi rounded out the top five. Horejsi moved up seventeen spots and was the Hammer Down Hard Charger.
Final feature of the night was the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event but before a single lap was scored the caution came out when Jeff Kriz spun in turn one. Richie Gustin jumped out to the race lead on the restart and he held on to that until the caution came out on lap four when Nick Roberts went off the top of turn three and four. Joel Rust got a great restart and took the top spot away. Rust was able to pull away and go on to to claim the win, a great way to celebrate his son Emmett 1st birthday and his sister Jen's birthday. Todd Shute worked his way from eleventh and tried to chase down Rust but settled for second. Jake McBirnie came home in thrid, Tripp Gaylord was fourth and Izac Mallicoat was fifth.
