After having a fantastic trip to the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa last week for the Frostbuster i decided to make the trip back for the WCM Metalworks of Winterset Season Opener. Unlike the Frostbuster there would be 5 classes instead of 4 like last week competiting on the big half mile on the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds.
First feature of the night was the 6 lap Autocrafters IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Steve Miedke from Shellsburg would lead the first lap but it was Merv Chandler making the pass and taking the lead on lap 2. Chandler would go on and take the win, John Whalen was 2nd, Bill Whalen was 3rd, Miedke was 4th but may have broken a gear when the race came to an end and it was Larry Hopkins in 5th.
Tracy Elevator IMCA Hobby Stocks 14 lap feature was next and it was Shannon Anderson leading the race from start to finish. For much of the race the only battle was for 4th through 6th but when the caution came out on lap 11 for Scott VanBusKirk losing an axel and wheel in turn 4 it would set up an interesting finish. Anderson would be able to hold off everybody for his 2nd win this season at Southern Iowa Speedway. Kevin Fee, Dustin Griffiths, John Watson and Donavon Nunnikhoven rounded out the top 5.
In the Pyramid Graphics IMCA SportMods feature it was Jason McDaniel taking the lead early and looked to be the guy to beat. The first caution came out for Richie Arnold on lap 4 because he came to a stop in turn 2. McDaniel would be able to hold off the challenges from Carter VanDenBerg and Jenae Gustin on the restart but then the caution came out again on lap 9 for Brayton Carter getting into the outside wall in turn 4.
On the restart McDaniel would continue to lead but 4 laps later the caution would come out for Ryan Fullencamp and Tony Johnson getting together in turn 2 meanwhile McDaniel appeared to lose a spring and pulled in handing the lead over to Carter VanDenBerg. When the race got going VanDenBerg would hold off Jesse Sobbing and Curtis VanDerWal but then VanDenBerg's dad John would bring out the caution on lap 14 setting up for a green-white-checkered finish. Carter VanDenBerg and Sobbing would do battle and Sobbing would make the pass and take the win while VanDenBerg settled for 2nd. Jenae Gustin, Bill Gibson and Racer Hulin would finish 3rd through 5th.
The Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds would see Rookie Cayden Carter lead the entire 15 laps in the feature that would go green-to-checkered. Scott Dickey took 2nd, Corey Dripps was 3rd, Former Stock Car Champion Shane Weller was 4th and Dakota Hayden was 5th.
The final feature was the Carter's Manufacturing IMCA Stock Cars for 18 laps and the saying "Saved the Best for Last" was trully the case on this night as the Stock Car feature saw some great racing. Heavy Duty Don Killen would lead ther first 5 laps but Nathan Wood would make the move and take the lead away. Shortly after Wood took the lead the only race caution would come out for Leroy Groenendyk sitting on the backstretch. Wood would have to deal with Killen and Damon Murty and would hold them off until lap 9 when Murty made the move to take the lead. Murty would hold off several challenges from Todd Reitzler and Zack Vanderbeek to take the win. Vanderbeek, Killen, Matt Greiner and Wood rounded out the top 5.
Racing action start at about 7:50pm and came to and end at about 10:05pm. If you are looking for a great family Wednesday night racing spot head to the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. Pits Open at 5p, Grandstands at 6p, Hot Laps at 7p and Racing at 7:30p.
