Rust Goes Two for Two on HDT and Guss Takes Deery Win at Motown

Rust Goes Two for Two on HDT and Guss Take Deery Win at Motown
by Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (June 7th, 2016) - For the first time ever at the Marshalltown Speedway, both the Deery Brothers Summer Series and Hawkeye Dirt Tour raced the same night. Deery Brothers Summer Series was making their 25th visit to the high-banked quarter mile and the Hawkeye Dirt Tour making their first visit since September 2012 and their fifth appearance all together.

39 IMCA Modifieds checked in for race number two for the Hawkeye Dirt Tour, 33 IMCA Late Models checked in for race number five  of the Deery Brothers Summer Series and they were joined by 14 IMCA Stock Cars for Tuesday Night's Special.

The only major mishap in the heats and b-features was in the 1st late model b-main when Todd Cooney went for a tumble off the top side of turn one, Cooney was okay just a little winded and the car had severe damage.

After all that the redraw for the Late Models occured on the front stretch and it was Joel Callahan getting the number one box and Ray Guss Jr getting the number two box. At the same time the Modifieds redraw was taking place in the pits and it was Scott Davis and Jimmy Gustin drawing one and two respectively.

First feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car feature event and they lived up to the nickname of Class to Tough To Tame. Robbie Merkle and Jerry Schipper led the field to the green but it was Tyler Pickett leading the first two laps. Pickett and Jay Schmidt battled for the top spot with Schmidt leading laps three through five. Pickett edged out Schmidt on lap six but Schmidt edged out Pickett on lap seven. Schmidt and Pickett swaped the lead again on lap ten before Damon Murty joined in the battle and it was Murty taking the top spot away on lap 12. Murty held off several challenges from Schmidt to take his 202nd career IMCA Stock Car win. Schmidt finished second, Pickett was third, Last Friday's Winner Jeff Wollam finished fourth and Dave Atcher was fifth.

Scott Davis and Jimmy Gustin led the field in the 30 lap Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds feature event but it was the power of 26 as Brian Irvine and Joel Rust took the top spot early with Irvine out front leading. Irvine held off the challenges early from Rust but Rust was finally successful making the pass on lap eight. Rust and Irvine saw the only race caution come out on lap 12 when two heavy hitters, Jimmy Gusti and Ricky Thornton Jr got together in turn one. Rust and Irvine remained out front and battled for the top spot the rest of the way. Rust held off Irvine to make it two for two on the season in the Hawkeye Dirt Tour. Irvine finished second ahead of tenth place starter Kyle Brown, twelveth place starter Jacob Murray and 22nd place starter Richie Gustin Jr.

Up next was the ten lap Deery Brothers Summer Series Malvern Bank Non-Qualifer Dash for Cash and it was Veteran Greg Kastli leading from start-to-finish taking home $300 for his win. Ben Seemann finished second, Kip Siems was third, Mark Hurst was fourth and Randy Havlik was fifth.

The final race of the night was the Miller Lite 50 for the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models. Before a lap was completed the caution came out when Chad Holladay spun in turn two. When the race got going it was Joel Callahan leading lap one but that was short lived as Ray Guss Jr took the top spot away on lap two. Guss began to pull away and started to encounter lap traffic just as the caution came out on lap 19 for Jason Rauen coming to a stop in turn one. The caution was displayed for the final time on the restart when Scott Fitzpatrick came to a rest. Guss was not going to let that bother him as he got a great restart and pulled away, only lap traffic slowed him down but it was not enough for anybody to beat him as he would take his 31st career Deery Brothers Summer Series victory and third win at Marshalltown. Tyler Droste came home in second place and Ryan Dolan finished third. Joel Callahan and Cayden Carter rounded out the top five.

This Friday Night at the Marshalltown Speedway its Karl Performance / Casey's General Stores Night with the first of eight appearances for the IMCA Late Models this season. Also racing is the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and MADCRA Mod Lites. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing to Follow.
