Smock Wins Big in Late Models, Gustin Gets First Career Modified Win at Indee

Smock Wins Big in Late Models, Gustin Gets First Career Modified Win at Indee
by Jeremy Fox

Saturday Night was an open night for me this week so decided to make my yearly trip up to the Independence Motor Speedway of Peoples Company Weekly Points Night and in all it was a great night of racing with a first time winner in all classes but one.

Jenae Gustin pick up her first career IMCA Modified win meanwhile Travis Smock pick up $1,000 in the IMCA Late Models. Other feature winners were Jason Hocken (IMCA Stock Cars), Quinton Miller (IMCA Hobby Stocks) and Don Erger (Indee Cars).

First feature of the night was the Albert Auto IMCA SportMods 15 lap feature event and before a single lap could be completed the caution came out for Steve Wimer, Andy Edwards and Greg Barnett spun in turns three and four. When the race finally got started it was Kyle Bentley grabbing the top spot only to see the caution come out again after the completion of lap one for Wimer in turn two. Bentley continued to pace the way until lap six when Kevin Hurst powered to the top spot. Two more cautions slowed the feature event on lap seven and 11 but Kevin Hurst held off several challenges including Tony Olson late in the race to take his first of the season in Indee. Olson finished second ahead of Andy Edwards, Dakoda Sellers and Kyle Olson.

Jason Hocken wrestled the lead away from Corey Brown on lap one in the Burco Sales IMCA Stock Cars feature event but the caution came out on lap seven for Matt Burmeister in turn three and then again on the restart for Roeger Ciesielski in turn two. The caution came out again on lap eight when Russell Damme Jr spun in turn three. Hocken saw a hard charging Tom Schmitt but held him off to take his first win of the season. Jarod Weepie was third, Cole Mather was fourth and Chris Luloff was fifth.

Brady Kohrs and Russ Olson led the field to the green in the RCZ Enterprises Indee Cars 12 lapper but by the exit of turn two it was Don Erger grabbing the top spot only to have that wiped away as the red flag came out when Carson Less got sideways, Travis James and Russ Olson flipped upside down in turn four and Kohrs came to a stop. Erger inherited the pole and took advantage jumping out to the lead only to have the caution come out again on lap one for Dalton Weepie meanwhile both Kohrs and Kaden Reynolds head to the work area because their roof had came open. Erger cruised on to the win despite a caution on lap nine. Cole McNeal, Cole Suckow, Dallon Murty and Weepie rounded out the top five.

The caution came out before a single lap was completed in the Christy Door Co. Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature. When the race got going it was Jeremiah Wilson grabbing the to spot but Quinton Miller worked his way and grabbed the top spot away on lap three and never looked back cruising on to the win. Benji Irvine was second, Shawn Kuennen was third, Wilson was fourth and Neal Miller was fifth.

Travis Smock started outside row two of the Budweiser IMCA Late Models 25 lap feature but by the end of lap one, Smock was in the number one spot. The only caution came out when John Emerson came to a stop in the bottom of turn two. Smock saw Sean Johnson right behind him but Smock pulled away until lap traffic slowed him down which allowed Johnson to get back up and battle for the top spot but not even the lap traffic was going to deny Smock the $1,000 prize as he went on to take the win. Johnson finished second, Tyler Bruening was third, Russ Hesse was fourth and Emerson worked his way back up to fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event and it was Vern Jackson leading lap one. Brandon Maitland took the top spot on lap two and then the caution flags came on a lap five and eight. Jenae Gustin worked her way to second and grabbed the top spot away on lap ten and only thing slowing her was a pair of cautions on lap 13. Gustin showed her guns as she went on to take her first career IMCA Modified feature win ahead of Brandon Maitland, Ryan Maitland, Ronn Lauritzen and JD Auringer.

Independence Motor Speedway races every Saturday night. There will be no races on Saturday July 9th because of the Buchanan County Fair. Weekly Points Night next Saturday followed by Buchanan County Fair Races on Wednesday July 6th featuring the Dale Miller Memorial with Deery Brothers Summer Series, IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Northern SportMods.
