Tiegen, Mitchell, Olson Among Winners on C.O.P.S. Night at Hawkeye Downs

Originally I had schedule a pair of mid week races at Independence Motor Speedway on Wednesday July 6th (Announcing and story writer) and Marshalltown Speedway on Thursday July 7th (pictures and blog recap) but mother nature forced both tracks along with the Super Late Model Racing Series (SLMR) to postponed. Marshalltown's event was the 5th Annual Dale DeFrance Memorial presented by Fast Shaft and Tire Demon by Love Tap will now be on Friday August 5th. Independence's event was the Denny Osborn Memorial and will now be on Saturday August 6th.

So it meant I was going to find somewhere to go racing on Friday Night but as race tracks continued to pull the plug because of mother nature, there was only two places that raced Sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge and Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids. I received an invite to come over to Hawkeye Downs Speedway from Assistant Race Director Jay Crabill so I took up on the offer because I couldn't remember the last time I was at Hawkeye Downs. After a quick check, I believe the last time I may have been at Hawkeye Downs was in 2004 or 2009, I know I was there in 2004 for the Deery Brothers Summer Series show but can't remember if I went in 2009, that was the last time a dirt late model race was run on asphalt.

The racing action was heated up on the race track as they managed to go two and three wide several times through the night and even at one point in time four wide happened. It was also C.O.P.S. Night featuring the INEX Legends. C.O.P.S. stands for Concerns of Police Survivors and at intermission several families received recognition for a fallen love one that served as police officer. C.O.P.S. provides resources to help families of fallen officers rebuild their shattered lives.

First feature of the night was Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event which saw the initial start was called back. Reggie Mitchell jumped out to the race lead fending of Adam Petrzelka. The caution came out on lap 12 when Derek Parrott spun in turn four forcing a three lap shootout. Mitchell held off Adam Petrzelka and Matt Petrzelka on the restart to go on take the feature win. Matt Petrzelka finished second, Adam Petrzelka was third, Parrott worked his way back to finish fourth and Matt Lacoursiere finished fifth.

RJ "The Tank" Lank jumped out to the early lead of the A.I.R.S. 15 lap feature event fending of Tyler "MashTheGasMan" Maschmann early. Jeff Durst worked his way in to second on lap three and set his sights to get by Lank for the race lead. The caution came out on lap five when Maschmann spun in turn three forcing Emily Meyer and Bruce Yoerger to spin to avoid contact. Lank continued to hold of Durst until lap ten when Durst took the race lead away. The caution came out shortly after when Emily Meyer was unable to get out of harms way. Lank took back the race lead but Durst refused to go away as he would out duel Lank to the finish line to take the feature win. Lank, Dave Meyer, Allen Hansen and Josh Woods round out the feature win.

In the Cassill Motors IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature event, Hunter Wimer led the first lap but the impressive show was put on by Tony Olson after a line-up error, he was placed at the tail but by the end of lap one was in second place. Shortly after lap one was scored the caution came out when Scott Williams spun on the front stretch. The following restart was called back, the 2nd restart saw Tony Olson wrestle the lead away. The caution came out again on lap five for Steve Wimer spinning exiting turn two. Tony Olson fend off Patrick Flannagan going on to take the feature win. Flannagan finished second, Sean Vogt was third, Scott Williams was fourth and Bryanna Olson was fifth.

Up Next was the C.O.P.S. INEX Legends presented by Legends Direct 30 lap feature event. Robby Morrison led the first lap before Austin Slabaugh took the lead away on lap two. The caution came out shortly after because Morrison spun in turn one after contact from Michael Weber. The caution came out again on the restart when Ayrnton Brockhouse spun in turn two. Austin Slabaugh hung on to the race lead until lap 11 when Jacob Tiegen took the top spot away. Tiegen never looked back with the only thing slowing him down was heavy lap traffic. Tiegen took the win ahead of Austin Slabaugh, Tim Brockhouse, Kevin Korsmo and Jordan Miklas.

Josh Sevey led the first five laps of the Performance Foods Sportsmans 20 lap feature event. Sevey spun exiting turn four on lap six giving the lead over to Greg Hentrich. Hentrich continued to lead the way as David Ballstaedt, Brandon Herb and Todd Ness battled behind him for position. Hentrich hung on to take the feature win as the field came to the checkers the caution came out for Ness spinning. Hentrich was credited the win ahead of Ballstaedt, Ness, Herb and Dan Zamastil.

Emma Hanson grabbed the early lead in the Sunline Hornets 15 lap feature event but Corey Crispin took the lead away on lap three. Crispin was followed by Chad Vozenilek. Vozenilek made the move on lap fourteen to take the top spot away from Crispin, that move was the race winning move. Vozenilek took the win, Crispin finished second, Kurt Bohnsack was third, Elliott Vogel was fourth and Tallan Chandler was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Autocrafters A&D Premier Auto Enduro Sprint 30 lap feature event. Matt Lane led the first lap
Enduro Sprint before Eric Legue took the lead away on lap two. Legue led until lap five when Colton Utley nosed a head. Legue got the lead back on lap six and never looked back going on to take the feature win. Utley, Andrew Balsanek, Dennis Waggener and Jeremy Cassill rounded out the top five.

Hawkeye Downs is back in action next Friday July 15th as the King Enterprises Late Models join the card along side Legend Direct Legends, Sunline Hornets, Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks, Performance Foods Sportsmans and Cassill Motors Sport Mods. Pits Open at 4:30pm, Grandstands Open at 6pm, Hot Laps at 6:40pm and Racing at 7:30pm.

Special thanks goes out to the Hawkeye Downs Speedway Staff for the great hospitality received last night, I had fun coming over and taking some great racing on the asphalt.
