Gravel Takes Night 2 of the Premier Chevy Dealers Knoxville Clash

For the second straight Saturday Night I made the trip to the famed Knoxville Raceway with friends last week for the USAC Avanti Windows & Doors Cornbelt Clash  featuring the USAC Non-Wing Sprints, this week it was for the Premier Chevy Dealers Knoxville Clash featuring the NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaw Sprint Cars.

After watching the weather so intensely all day my ride picked me up around 5:15p and we heading to hopefully catch a night of racing action. We managed to do that as mother nature held off dumping heavy rain until after we were well on the road back to Marshalltown.

However with the concerns of rain, the Knoxville Raceway and World of Outlaws Sprint Cars Series decided to speed up the 410 sprints cars portion to get them done in the event of anything happening. Final Checkered flag was displayed at 10:56p.

David Gravel was able to capture his eleventh career win at the famed Knoxville Raceway on the final night of the Premier Chevy Dealers Knoxville Clash by leading from start to finish, taking home a $10,000 payday. Brian Brown, Garet Williamson, Carson Macedo and Spencer Bayston battled it out for position behind him. Gravel encounter lap traffic on lap nine at the same time that Sheldon Haudenschild expired to the infield after blowing up.

Macedo worked his way into second and started to track down Gravel, then something broke sending the Jason Johnson Racing No 41 into the outside fence. Macedo then went into a barrel roll before a fire engulfed. Brad Sweet, Bayston and Gio Scelzi all got out of their car to help assist Macedo out as the Knoxville Raceway Safety crew was extinguished the fire. Macedo was helped to the ambulance and went to the Knoxville Hospital for observation, as I type this on Sunday June 11th at 11:30a, he was released early in the morning.

Gravel got a great restart and checked out going on to capture the win. Friday night's winner Brian Brown came home in second, Williamson was third, Cory Eliason was fourth and James McFadden was fifth. Brad Sweet, Gio Scelzi, Anthony Macri, Bayston and Logan Schuchart rounded out the top ten. Schuchart took a WoO provision was the race's hard charger. McFadden and Gravel set quick time in their respective groups and also claimed heat wins. Macedo and Brown won the other heats. Dusty Zomer took the C Main, Gravel took the Dash and Kerry Madsen won the B Main.

In the 360 Sprints, Garet Williamson carried his momentum in the 410s to the 360s by leading all 18 laps from start to finish from the outside front row. Josh Higday ran second in the early stages followed by Aaron Reutzel, Ryan Giles and Chase Randall. Randall moved by Giles for fourth before the only caution came out when Kelby Watt took a wild ride in turn four. Watt was uninjured.

Williamson had a great restart and went on to take the feature win. Reutzel grabbed second from Higday, tried to reel in Williamson as lap traffic started to slow the leader but could not get by. Reutzel came home second, Randall challenged Reutzel but had to settle for third. Clint Garner and Jamie Ball was fourth and fifth respectively. Higday, Terry McCarl, Jake Bubak, Alex Hill and Cam Martin completed the top ten. Sawyer Phillips and Giles crashed hard on the front stretch after the checkers were thrown, both were okay. Garner was the race hard charger. Sawyer Phillips set quick time. Randall, Williamson, Cam Martin and Alex VandeVoort won heats and Tyler Groenendyk won the B-Main.

Next Saturday Night at the Knoxville Raceway is Slideways Night. The 410 Sprints will be competing for a $10,000 top prize as part of the "Border Battle" Series with Jackson Motorplex on Friday, Huset's Speedway on Sunday. The Pro Sprints and 360's will also be on the card. Engine Heat at 6:15p, Hot Laps at 6:45p, Racing to Follow.
