When the World of Outlaw Late Models announced their 2023 schedule and I saw the Mason City Motor Speedway presented by Pritchard Family Auto Stores was on the schedule I marked it down on my schedule as well as other races in the Hawkeye State coming for the World of Outlaws.
Tuesday Nights can be tricky but Todd, Janet and Ryne Staley along with the rest of the Mason City Motor Speedway crew did a fantastic job putting this event on and I hope the World of Outlaws return next season. A total of sixty cars between three classes checked into to tame the 1/3 mile on the North Iowa Fairgrounds. Twenty-four of them was the World of Outlaw Case Construction Late Models, 22 Window World of Mason City USRA B-Mods and 14 Wrightz Auction Company USRA Hobby Stocks.
Racing action wrapped up at 10:39pm meaning after the two hour drive back to Marshalltown, I got home around 1 am. I had fun and would do it again. Keep up the great work Todd and Ryne on making racing great again in Mason City.
Shortly after the final heat race of the night, the speedway lost all power to the front stretch lights, caution lights, timing & scoring, pa announcing system so as that was being resolved track prep was going to make the racing surface better for the features. Once power was restored, the decision was made to move the Late Models to the first feature instead of being the finale.
First feature of the night was the CASE Construction World of Outlaw Late Model Series 40 lap feature event. Tanner English jumped out the race lead from his outside pole starting spot but before he could pull away the red flag came out when Jason Strand hit the entrance to the pit area in turn three and then flipped upside down. English had to contend with constant pressure from Bobby Pierce when the race resumed. Shane Clanton and Brian Shirley joined in the mix. The battle for the lead and contact with a lap car punctured English's right rear. The caution came out again on lap twenty-four when Shirley, battling with Clanton makes contact with Dustin Walker as both spin in turn two.
On the following restart, officials noticed that English's tire from the the earlier contact with a lap car definitely punctured the tire because on lap 26, English slowed coming down the front stretch with a flat tire allowing Pierce to take the race lead. Pierce was able to get a fantastic restart and remain unchallenged in the final 14 laps, despite one more caution on lap 34 when Todd Cooney had a right rear tire go down. Pierce went on to earn the $10,000 prize and claim his eighth career World of Outlaws win, the win allowed Pierce to take over the points lead from Chris Madden. Clanton finished second, Brandon Sheppard was third, Mike Marlar was fourth and Nick Hoffman was fifth.
Fox Factory Hard Charger Brent Larson was sixth. Ryan Gustin, Dennis Erb Jr, Chris Simpson and Cade Dillard rounded out the top ten. Hoffman, Pierce and Clanton was the heat race winners. Hoffman set a new track record with a 13.343 lap in Low-E Insulations Time Trials.
Next up was the Window World of Mason City USRA B-Mods 20 lap feature event. Gage Motl from Owantonna, Minnesota took the earl lead fending off Troy Hale. Motl was never able to pull away as he was then challenged by Noah Grinstead from Austin, Minnesota. Motl remain in command until the only race caution came out on lap thirteen for Philip Ihde in turn four. Eighth place starter Joe Chisholm restarted third but was able to take the top spot away. Chisholm was able to pull away and go on to take the victory. Motl came home second, Grinstead was third, Dan Hovden in fourth and Ben Moudry was fifth. Hovden, Chisholm and Moudry took the heat race wins.
Final feature of the night was Wrightz Auction Company USRA Hobby Stocks 18 lap feature event. Brian Lund fought off Zac Smith to take the race lead early. Lund than had to fight off attempts from Kolby Goepel, Smith and tenth place starter Carter Koop but continued to do that. The caution came out on lap seven when Jace Hanson spun in turn four with mechanical issues. Koop was able to take the top spot way on the restart and never look back going on to take the feature win. Goepel, eighth place starter Luke Schluetter, Lund and Sommerfeld rounded out the top five. Heat race winners was Sommerfeld and Chris Hovden.
