Shute Wins Again, Murty Wins Structural Shootout at Motown

Friday Night was picture perfect for racing with clear skies and very little wind. Racing action was intense all night long as they would go two, three and four wide through out the night. Racing action started straight up at 7:30p and the final checkered flag fell at 10:53p.

One Hundred-twelve cars signed in to tame the high banks of the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway for P&D Welding Solutions Night presented by 1-800-BETS-OFF. Twenty-three Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds for $1,000 to win and $500 to win Structural Shootout. The night also featured the second visit of the season for the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks.

The heat races ran with out a hitch for the most part until Terry May, celebrating his birthday, took a tumble off the top side of turn two in the Dirt Trucks heat race, he was okay but a little sore.

After all the heats was completed it was time for the P&D Welding Solutions Structural Shootout, 16 cars divided up into 4 groups of four with the top 2 moving on. Dallon Murty, Paul Nagle, Spencer Wilson and Tripp Gaylor won the quarterfinal races. Murty and Gaylord won the Semifinals. In the Finals, Murty and Joel Rust battled it out with Murty taking the win, Rust finished second, Gaylord in third and Wilson in fourth.

First feature of the night was the Hy-Vee IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event. Kolby Sabin jumped out to the race lead and cruised away from the rest of the field until a caution just after half way. The battle for position was behind him between Matt Miller, Terry Bickford and Mitchell Bunch. The caution came out on lap nine when Curtis Masterson blew up and dumped oil on the racing surface. After getting the oil worked in it was back to races and Sabin fended off Miller and Bickford on the restart and went on to take his third win of the season in Motown. Bickford came across in second but was disqualified in post race tech so that moved Miller to second and Bunch to third. "Dr. Crash Dummy" Larry Werner and Chad Larson was fourth and fifth respectively.

Ben Newhouse grabbed the top spot early in the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event but that was short lived as the caution came out on lap three when Blake Driscol spun in turn two. "Ferguson Freight Train" Sam West took the top spot away on the restart meanwhile Newhouse battled with "Flyin' Fireman" Calvin Dhondt, Solomon Bennett and Eric Knutson. West led until the caution came out on lap nine for Logan Andrews spinning on the back stretch. Dhondt stole the top spot away from West on the restart. West refused to go away and tried to take the top spot back but failed as Dhondt went on to take the feature win. West, Bennett, twelfth place starter Bradly Graham and Knutson rounded out the top five.

Next up was the Rugged Radios IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20 lap feature event, "Herbie The Love Bug" Logan Anderson jumped out to the race lead but had to fend off several challenges by Matt Avila early. The caution came out on lap 2 for Jessiah Taylor. Anderson held off Avila and Brayton Carter on the restart. The caution came out again on lap five when Kenser Ellis and Taylor in turn two. Anderson led and looked to be heading on to the win until Jenae Gustin, driving a borrowed race car, worked her way through and worked into second on lap 16. Gustin was able to make the move on lap 18 and take over the race lead. Anderson tried to get back by but Gustin held on to take the feature win. Anderson finished second, Carter was third, "Newlywed" Sam Wieben was fourth and Kyle Olson was fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event, the caution came out when Jake McBirnie, Paul Nagle and Johnathon Logue get together in turn three. Ethan Braaksma took the lead on the following restart but the caution came out again after a lap was completed when Gat Leytham, Joel Rust and "Magoo" Maguire DeJong in turns one and two. Braaksma continued to lead until "Toddzilla" Todd Shute was able to take the top spot away on lap four. Shute was followed by Tripp Gaylord. The caution came out three times on lap six but Shute was able to hold on to take the feature win worth $1,000. Gaylord, Braaksma, "Game Changer" Dallon Murty and Jacob Murray rounded out the top five.

The caution came out before a single lap was scored in the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event when Bugs Vincent was spun on the front stretch. Michael Jaennette led the first two laps before Jay Schmidt was able to make the move and get by Jaennette on lap three. Schmidt fended off several challenges from Jaennette and Damon Murty meanwhile Scott Rice and Micheal Smith battled it out behind the front three. Schmidt held on to take the win ahead of Murty, Jaennette, Rice and Steve Meyer.

Josh May started fourth but was able to be in the top spot at the end of lap one in the Knight Sanitation IMCA Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. May was able to lead all fifteen laps in the feature that when green-to-checkered. RJ Gonzales tried to get by May but had to settle for second, Alex Eischeid was third, Jason Masengarb was fourth and Cory Sonner in fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks 20 lap feature event. After the initial start was called back Shawn Cooney jumped out to the race lead. Cooney slipped up on lap three opening up for two time truck winner Mason Mitchell to take the top spot away on lap three. Mitchell held off Cooney and looked to be heading on to the race win but a caution came out on lap 11 when Jeff Frevert spun in turn one. Brandon Toftee was went to the top side as Mitchell and the rest of the field worked the bottom. Toftee was able to make the high side work and take the top spot away on lap 14. Toftee went on to take his second feature win of the season in the Trucks with Mitchell in second. Brandon Cox, broke the motor in his truck in the heat race meanwhile Shaun Clinger offered up his truck to Cox, in which he was able to come home with a third place finisher.
